"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm phillip mena. >> good to be with you.

i'm frances rivera. >> breaking overnight, law enforcement confirms marilou danley, the girlfriend of steve paddock, the las vegas shooter, has arrived in the united states. new footage shows danley arriving at l.a.x. you can see her right there in the wheelchair accompanied by fbi agents. danley remains a person of interest in the investigation into sunday night's shooting. and she arrives as we learn stunning new details about the deadliest mass shooting in modern american history. a lone gunman unleashed a rapid-fire barrage of bullets from the 32nd floor of a las vegas hotel, spraying a concert down below and killing at least 58, wounding more than 500 more. while law enforcement rushed to respond there, were already officers on the ground at the concert. las vegas police released a sampling of disturbing body cam footage showing their reaction to the gunfire. [ sirens ] [ rapid gunfire ] >> go that way, go that way, go that way.

>> hey, they're shooting right at us, guys. everybody stay down. stay down. >> where is it at? >> north of the mandalay bay. it's coming out of a window. >> officials showed these images of officers evacuating frightened concertgoers. they also worked to clarify a timeline of their response. the first call to dispatch about the gunfire was received at 10:08 p.m. the gunman fired, quote, a dozen or so volleys for between nine and 11 minutes. then the gunman stopped firing by 10:19 p.m. police explained why there was a delay reportedly over an hour before the s.w.a.t. team entered the room. >> we're considering it a barricade at that point because it's no longer an active shooter. we're not hearing any further shots. the floors had already been evacuated of the guests. the suspect was now isolated and contained within a room. at the point the s.w.a.t. team made their decision based on

when it was appropriate to enter. i want to make it clear again to you that while there was that slight delay the suspect was no longer firing into the crowd. >> authorities believe the gunman fatally shot himself before officers were able to enter his hotel room. inside law enforcement found multiple weapons. in total along with those found in two other locations in nevada officials say they have recovered 47 firearms, including rifles, shotguns, and pistols. officials say none of the weapons appear to be homemade and that they were purchased in at least four different states. california, nevada, utah, and texas. authorities also found 12 bump fire stocks in the gunman's hotel room, which could allow him to fire the weapons faster. an atf official explained the device's legality. >> the classification of these devices depends on whether they mechanically alter the function of the firearm to fire fully automatic. bump fire stocks, while simulating automatic fire, do

not actually alter the firearm to fire automatically, making them legal under current federal law. >> nbc's pete williams has more into the investigation into the shooter who carried out the las vegas massacre. >> reporter: yellow police tape marks the scene where the reign of gun nooir came from. stephen paddock's 32nd floor hotel room. visible through the door, one of the 23 weapons he brought there in 13 suitcases. a high-powered sniper rifle with a scope and stabilizing bipod. and authorities say they now know why he was able to shoot rounds so quickly with such deadly effect. investigators say he bought attachments, sold legally, that allow conventional assault-style rifles to be fired like machine guns. >> we are aware of a device called a bump stock and that enables an individual to speed up the discharge of ammunition. >> reporter: officials say he fired most of the shots in the

first nine minutes of the attack. the sheriff also says paddock stationed cameras in the hotel hallway to watch for approaching law enforcement. police are now tracing what he was up to before he checked into the mandalay bay last thursday. the weekend before the shooting officials say he rented rooms in this high-rise condo building overlooking an even bigger outdoor music festival. investigators want to know if it was a kind of dry run. earlier last week investigators say he wired $100,000 to the philippines, where his girlfriend, marilou danley, is from. she was there this week visiting relatives. that's typical generosity, his brother said today. >> steve took care of the people he loved. he helped make me and my family wealthy. i mean, he's the reason i was able to retire. >> reporter: and in the weeks before his attack paddock racked up 16 transactions for more than $10,000 each in las vegas casinos. at the retirement community in mesquite where he lived neighbors say he was intensely

private. >> i had no idea a lunatic lived three doors down. >> reporter: and more is known about his work background. he was a letter carrier for a year and a half and worked for a time as an irs agent, both before he made millions in real estate. >> that was pete williams reporting. today president trump is scheduled to visit las vegas to meet with first responders and comfort victims' families. nbc's ron lenlt is theallen is morning. how are residents coping with the horrific mass shooting? >> reporter: we left the crime scene there behind us and all the glitz and glamour of the hotels and casinos here along the strip and went out into a las vegas neighborhood to attend a vigil, a community gathering. a few hundred people, lots of families, lots of children, there to pay tribute and support the first responders, police officers, firefighters, who performed so heroically during the past few days. here we see a lot of examples of las vegas coming together. we hear a lot about vegas strong. they lit 58 candles for aecht

victims who was killed. we also ran into a group of friends. three survivors who attended the concert together and now a couple of days later are still trying to get their heads around the horror that happened to them. >> the resonance of this for me now is i made if for my children. i'm keeping it with me forever. before i cut this off i will be getting it tattooed on my arm so i know i'm never going forget but i don't want anybody else to forget as well. >> reporter: and despite what happened, many saying that they want the concert to come back to the same venue right there behind us. the same place again next year to make a statement. a lot of people also talking about how they want the world to see that las vegas is more than just these casinos, the nightlife and everything. they want the world to see that as a community of families many people who are really kneeling a lot of pain. frances? >> we've seen that and i'm sure we'll continue in the days to come. ron, thank you.

>> now to nbc meteorologist bill karins. what do you have your eye on? zblun fortunately something new in the tropics. this is brewing down near costa rica and panama and nicaragua. it's far away from us but it is an 80% chance of development in the next five days. the reason that's important for us is the five-day development zone possibly brings it are through the western caribbean into the gulf of mexico. from there a lot of our long-range models, our americans, our european models do take this up toward the northern gulf coast. sometime toward sunday or monday. so again, we have to watch. we have no idea at this point how strong it will be or how much it can intensify. that is to be determined in the days ahead. but we do think it will be heading in the general direction of the northern gulf coast. nothing out there too traumatic today. just florida still rough. tropical wave will come through the next few days with some rain and gusty winds for the east

against michael durston, president trump's pick to lead the epa's chemical safety program. critics say durson spent decades conducting industry-funded research that downplays the health risks of toxic substances. among them senator tom udall of new mexico who accused the president of filling the swamp with some of the swampiest creatures ever. durson is slated to appear at a senate confirmation hearing on wednesday. meanwhile the president is receiving a rash of criticism this morning after he paid a visit to prooko following the island's devastation after hurricane maria and making controversial remarks that raised more than a few eyebrows. >> i hate to tell you, puerto rico, but you've thrown our budget a little out of whack. because we've spent a lot of money on puerto rico. and that's fine. we've saved a lot of lives. if you look at the -- every death is a horror. but if you look at a real catastrophe like katrina and you look at the tremendous hundreds

and hundreds and hundreds of people that died and you look at what happened here with really a storm that was totally overpowering, nobody's ever seen anything like this. >> those comments came after images of the president tossing paper towels to hurricane victims went viral. that action coming just after the president toured some of the hardest-hit areas of the island, both in the air and on foot. for more on this we go to nbc's tracy potts in washington. hey, tracy. >> good morning, everyone. what was a controversial trip going into it was even more so coming out after those comments that you heard the president made. the paper towels, the throwing of the paper towels, some of that video went viral. the stills as well. with some like the mayor of san juan saying that it demeaned the situation that they are in, that they didn't feel that the president was taking it seriously. especially with his criticism of the cost of the recovery. even here on capitol hill some critics saying that the president didn't question the cost of the recovery in texas

and florida with hurricane harvey and now does so with puerto rico. this was the reaction of san juan's mayor. >> this terrible and abominable view of him throwing paper towels and throwing provisions at people, it's really -- it does not embody the spirit of the american nation. he was insulting to the people of puerto rico. he said something like puerto rico, you really have taken our budget out of whack because of all the money we're throwing here. he kind of minimized our suffering here by saying that katrina was a real disaster, sort of implying that this was not a real disaster because not many people have died here. well, you know what? they're dying. >> of course that's the mayor, mayor cruz, who had been in this twitter war with the president back and forth for several days with him criticizing her as being partisan in this situation. he spent a lot of time on the

now to the protests that

continue in the catalonia region of spain. nearly 15,000 people filled the streets of barcelona in a massive strike organized by labor unions and pro-independence groups. demonstrators shut down streets in protests of what they called police brutality against voters earlier this week. nearly 900 people were hurt in clashes with police sunday as they tried to vote in a referendum for independence from spain. a vote declared unconstitutional by spain's central government. catalan officials declared a 99% victory margin and promised to declare independence despite spain's insistence otherwise. nbc's chapman bell joins us from london with more. the big question is where does this go from here? >> reporter: good morning, frances. well, there are several scenarios that could play out. we could see more demonstrations, more strikes that could possibly lead to negotiations. but we've also heard from carlos poigdemot who's the leader of the catalan government.

he's told news outlets he plans to declare independence going ahead for the region even doing this in the coming days. this could lead to spain's government, led by prime minister mariana rajoy, suspending the government region, even suspending the catalan parliament. they're calling this an illegal referendum that goes against the constitution and even the legislation that's in place that gives the region its autonomy. even the king of spain, felipe vi, has addressed the nation in what is a rare speech, saying today catalan society is fractured and confronted. he calls the vote illegal and even irresponsible. but the one thing he did not address was the police crackdown we saw over the weekend as police tried to towardar twartd those scenes of violence that erupted, as people tried to vote. police firing rubber bullets, injuring these people. many say this is a catalyst that brought people to the streets in
