oakland, 72. san mateo, up to 74 and san francisco, upper 60s there. north bay, look for the highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s. a closer look at the temperatures coming up. mike is showing slowing for 680. >> i am. i'm looking at that because the rest of the bay shows a light drive. 680, that's the most slowing and most impact. that may go on, possibly until 5:00 this morning, heading down past the monument and the walnut creek interchange. paving work going on overnight. we are not hearing of anything holding this up. if it does, you can see the impact it will have on the commute. no delays toward the bay bridge, the toll plaza is clear right now. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. the latest developments out of las vegas. a live look at mandalay bay where investigators investigate

where the shooter killed dozens. we are getting a chillingly close look inside the investigation. >> late last night, the shooter's girlfriend returned to the u.s. this is exclusive video of marilou danley coming in. she was taken away for questioning. her sister said the gunman bid her out of the country days before the shooting. >> the dramatic events of sunday night. the haunting video captured the intense search for the gunman as shots rained down on fans. >> we are looking inside the shooter's room. in the entry way, a high power sniper rifle. hundreds of rounds of ammunition were found inside the gunman's suite. the gunman uncovered multiple video cameras. the fbi is reviewing that video.

>> the death is 58 plus the gunman. four had strong ties to the bay area. >> friends and family remembering michelle vo on the far left there. she was from san jose and graduated from independent high school in 2003. co-workers describe her as hard working. >> next to her is 50-year-old stacee etcheber, a devoted mother of two. friends described her as strong and spunky. >> friends and family mourning the loss of denise cohen and bob taylor, a couple who grew up in the bay area. denise was a ray of life and bo was the nicest guy in the world, who made everyone laugh. >> we are going to have more on their stories and lives in the next half hour. you can read more by going to www.nbcbayarea.com. also new this morning, in the aftermath of the tragedy in las vegas, security is, of course, a concern as san francisco prepares two outdoor

events going on this week. >> the bluegrass festival and fleet week, close to 2 million people are expected in the city. pete suratos is live in san francisco with how the city is prepared. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. the two events you mentioned, the bluegrass festival and outdoor concert taking place this weekend and fleet week, which is already under way. the bigger events are at the end of the week. law enforcement agencies have an up creased emphasis in light of the las vegas mass shoot thing t took place. this is prior to the events of las vegas. the officials say they will be working hand in hand with law enforcement agencies. the bigger crowd, which attracts people to the area, they are expected toward the end of the week with the blue angels air show taking place as well as the parade of ships.

prior to shooting, active patrol on land and water. hardly strictly bluegrass festival. the concert taking place over the weekend at golden gate park. you will see an increase in security presence following the event in las vegas. a reporter got a chance to speak to the san francisco mayor,ed lee following the las vegas mass shooting. >> absolutely, i think already our entertainment venues, like the bluegrass and the concerts are adding and beefing up security, working even closer with the police department about any holes, any gaps. we have tall buildings that are public spaces for people to use and visit. hotels as well. they do surround large, open spaces. yes, we have to pay a lot of attention to that. >>reporter: a lot of attention

morning. it got really cold yesterday. it's going to be more of the same as we start out this morning. another cool one. this is where we are right now for the peninsula and south bay in the middle of the screen, looking live in palo alto, 53 there. in the east bay, looking live in fremont, it's 50 degrees. north bay, we are down again in the mid-40s. i wouldn't be surprise zed if we had 30s today. it will recover nicely. look at the high temperatures in antioch, up to 83 degrees. half-moon bay, 69 degrees. san francisco, 68 and for palo alto, it's going to be 79 degrees. i don't know what's going on down here, but should be about 70 degrees today in santa cruz. i know, right? looking at the north bay, if you are going out to the hiking trail or the park early, it will start out really cold. look how warm it gets by 10:00. this is what we saw yesterday. it quickly warms up and then we

start to see a very nice afternoon on the way with temperatures in the mid-70s. we are going to have more of those 70s in the forecast for san francisco. very nice weekend ahead for fleet week, then for the inland areas, it's going to be in the upper 80s. for the weekend, it will feel like summer. it comes back for three days. let's head over to mike. you are hearing of a car fire? >> i am. it just came into chp on 680. the sensors look great. moving toward the tri-valley, down into santa ramon, a car fire south 680. no slowing on the sensors. sounds like everything is off to the shoulder and may just be a smoking vehicle. we'll check it out anyway. anything wrong and on the shoulder is an issue and a distraction. over here, this is a problem as far as the traffic flow. down to one lane, southbound 680 to walnut creek. the paving was scheduled to be

picked up soon. we are seeing more slowing from 242 down to the walnut creek interchange. that's because the build is on already for that portion of the east bay. heading to the bay bridge is not a problem. we go over and show you waze and the alternate they have mapped for you. off the venetian bridge, on highway 24. if you job over and take taylor down through pleasant hill, that's a good drive. wazer gets you past the slow section. the emeryville camera is the one off the east shore and looking at the bridge itself. the bay bridge looks good to focus on the beautiful sparkling lights. the traffic is good as well, into and out of the city. >> i'm glad you see the good in everything. that's nice. lawmakers encouraging so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers to

submit daca renewal applications. that's despite the planned termination of daca next march. dianne feinstein asked the white house to extend the renewal in light of disasters and high application costs. the president left it up to congress to come up with legislation to protect d.r.e.a.m.ers. today, san francisco police chief and city leaders will announce plans to crack down on car break ins. we hope to hear of the creation of other people to look at the crimes. overnight, we sifted through the latest records and reportings. burglaries are up 28% from january to july of this year. with the mission district seeing a 182% increase. the examiner reports in the first half of the year, nearly 18,000 car break-ins were

reported. the same time last year, nearly 14,000 reported. continuing coverage now of the san jose catholic priest convicted of bank fraud. he was sentenced to three years in prison. he was convicted of stealing more than $1 million from the account and charity organizations. the south bay is getting ready for the next rainy season, clearing out coyote creek. the creek flooded earlier, damaging hundreds of homes. today, santa clara valley crews will remove vegetation along the creek in san jose. this will go on for several weeks. 40,000 people were evacuated during the february floods. last month, more than 100 people were living in temporary apartments and shelters. you know what today is? the international walk or roll to school day. by roll, we mean bike to school. >> so many bay area schools and

other sea life are washing up dead in the san francisco bay. it's not just something in the water. >> we are along the bay with that story. >> reporter: guys, good morning. the san francisco bay is home to a complex ecosystem. when one species suffers, others can, too. it stretched 1600 square miles so wildlife is interconnected. that's concerning since 2000 sharks washed up dead in the bay just over five months. marine biologist is california's one-man science trying to figure out why. the research points to a parasite that sneaks in through a shark's nose and slowly eats away at the brain. studying sharks isn't officially his job. he's been researching in his spare time and does it from home. to find out why, california's

department of fish and wildlife, we spoke to dave tiffany. >> we have a lot of constraints on how the programs are funded. >> reporter: right now, california is relying on a guy checking shark tissue sample in his dining room. doesn't that seem strange to you? >> i have no knowledge of how his day-to-day operations work. i can't answer that. >> you are not aware he is doing any of the science in his living room. >> i didn't know that. >> reporter: in his kitchen? his backyard? >> no. >> reporter: not at all. we discovered the department of fish and wildlife isn't dedicating any money toward researching the shark deaths. the legislature or governor could change that. they say they are prioritizing research elsewhere, to other higher risk wildlife. >> thank you very much. if you have a tip, give us a
