i )m laura garcia. good morning, and thank you for joining us for the special edition of "today in the bay." >> we continue to monitor the devastating wildfires in the north bay. here's where things stand at this hour. there are at least ten confirmed deaths related to the destructive fire, seven in sonoma county, one in napa. there's 100 missing person reports, but firefighter i say it's likely because of spotty cell service in the area. cal fire admits the number is conservative. an estimated 20,000 people are forced from their homes with evacuations expanding every hour. boil water notice the in santa

orange glow is coming from the napa county side. the concern why they told folks to evacrate, there's fears it jumps over the mountain into the solano county area, hence why folks need to evacuate. we have video from overnight our crews got. sheriff deputies going door to door telling people that they needed to evacuate, and, in fact, there were trucks pulling horse trailers, folks getting out of town as there's fears of the fire coming over into the area, and really, that's why they have mandatory evacuations in place in this green valley area. as we pull up this information, there's specific areas evacuated. of course, green valley road where we are standing. the green valley estates area, and twin sisters road, and roads off of twin sisters, that area is evacwaited as well as all of joyce lane. this morning, we are trying to get more information, all evacuations, obviously, the area where we are standing in fairfield has been evacuated

4:04 am
was burning on the east side jumped the six lane freeway headed for the command center. this is what a firefighter who was there told us. >> came in the parking lot, and soon, it was all black smoke on the backside. k-mart -- we got to get out of here. there's too much wind, too much fire. >> amazing the fire chasing the firefighters out. neighborhoods behind the hilton hotel also destroyed. >> schools are still closed today because of that fire. the suisun valley, k-8 is close the. all napa value ye unifys school districts closed today. all santa rosa city schools closed. sonoma state is closed. federal rosa junior college and community college cancelled classes, but the gym is an evacuation center. these are some of the school closures. the list is extremely extensive. go to our website nbcbayarea.com

for the full list. if you have animals and need a place to take them during the fire there's several options. santa rosa fairgrounds, sonoma fairgrounds, citrus fair, and more. a horse was evacuated overnight. this was in a parking lot in fairfield where one woman took her horse, waiting for the trailer to pick her up to take to another location. crews who took the video said the horse was stressed because of the activity in the area. >> right now, headed over to our meteorologist tracking all of this, dealing with high winds, and, today, a better day, i guess, in battling that fire. >> the winds are calming down. that will be a definite plus as the firefighters try to get some containment here, but i wanted to show you overall some of the major fires burning around napa,

after napa earthquake and now used to help fire victims. there's now a go fund me page on our cbs, nbcbayarea.com. >> let's check the forecast today. showing the red flag warning. >> yes. it expires towards the 5:00 hour. this has been in effect for several days now. i do expect them to allow this to expire as our wind speeds calm down significantly since yesterday, but, still, very low humidity this morning, and we will have some poor air quality today, so we are still advising you to limit your outdoor exposure, and, also, turn the air-conditioning on recirculate to help out as well, especially if you have pets at home or will be at home all day long. if you are smelling the smoke, perhaps try to get a breathing mask. those are sold at a lot of stores around the area. grocery stores, you can see them at the dollar store, and if you feel nauseous or if you start coughing, you should seek medical attention.
4:19 am
we have all this information listed at nbcbayarea.com. we're starting off in morning with some much higher humidities. yesterday at this time our humidity levels were only 15%, especially in the north bay, but look at this recovery as we head into the early morning hours. we are seeing the humidity now up at 71%, so it's a much more humid, we have calm winds, and this will help out as we go through the day. our temperatures are also very cool, we're in the low 50s, starting out at 8:00, and as more crews get out there to handle the fire, our temperatures today rising into the upper 70s for the rest of the afternoon. in napa coupe, more of the same, starting out with come temperatures throughout the morning, a lot of smoke, and temperatures reaching into the upper 70s. here's a live look outside in emeryville. can see there's a little bit smoke drifting by, but not as
4:20 am
bad as yesterday. in san jose, a mostly clear start. temperatures generally in the low to mid-50s. we have cooler temperatures in the north bay and upper 40s right now, with high temperatures today headed into the upper 70s, low 80s. elsewhere, we see the temperatures in the low 80s for the inland valleys and low 70s for the coastline. i have to show you the seven-day forecast for the north bay. the winds will stay calm for at least the next several days, and cooler than normal temperatures, but look at the weekend. we'll have the winds listed on saturday and sunday and expect winds to pick up again, so, hopefully containment happens between now and then. mike is tracking freeway closures. >> talking about the winds, it's a battle in the north bay. this is where we have the freeway closures. anywhere south of the bay bridge is clear and good flowing traffic. really early right now. over here, there's closures on the 101 and 37, reopened since
4:21 am
yesterday, so that's better news for this morning's commute, folks returning to the workweek. over here, glen allen, coming from 128, there's closures there, and traveling over the peak, you cannot do that. it's closed. the fire is in this area, watching the effect as winds shifted and affected the area, but right now, i-80 is completely open as well as 505, and so far the freeways are open in the area, free flowing traffic. in the north bay, we are following, also, the redwood complex fire going on as well. not to forget. closure for 101, it's between the 20 is closed right now. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. we'll have continuing breaking news coverage of the wildfires burning in the north bay after the break. head to nbcbayarea.com for new updates. we'll have all the evacuations and closures posted there. we'll be back here on air after the break.
