downed power lines, which makes traveling on the roads very dangerous. you can see power lines down here, tree branches, other debris. a scene of complete devastation. behind me, you can see the burnt out brush. it may be dark to see, it looks like this would be a turn off into a neighborhood. it looks like it is completely flattened. off to the side, we have hot spots burning, still a strong smell of smoke and ashes. a curfew is in place until after sunrise. police are stationed at off ramps and streets to enforce it and keep people out of areas like this one. from the looks of it, this area has little assessment because of the downed power lines and folks trying to stay safe and keep out of the area. we have seen earlier, cops driving up and down to where the roads are blocked off and people trying to keep the curfew for

us. anser hassan, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. people have to take special precautions out there. >> we have kris sanchez in santa rosa this morning, dealing with the efforts going on there. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is a neighborhood of pretty fancy homes here. these folks are under evacuation and it's no wonder why. you can see the hillside is still aglow behind me at wide oak road. we can hear the crackling of trees, see those embers there. the good news here is we are not seeing the kind of wind -- >> okay, we, unfortunately lost her live shot. it's breaking up. she was saying we aren't seeing the types of winds we were that were fueling the flames. there were reports of wind gusts up to 30,40,50 miles per hour at one point. we are in the red flag warning. kari hall has been watching the winds. yesterday, they eventually died

down about noon yesterday. that really helped firefighters. the winds are what were carrying the embers and starting and igniting the fires. >> definitely relief for those firefighters. >> the fight continues, which is unfortunate. sonoma county, there are two major evacuation zones. one is a big section in santa rosa. look at the map. this is roanoke park and forestville. >> mark west spring road to the north, includes fountain grove parkway and montecito. there's a separate evacuation order east of the state park. >> there are now two dozen evacuation centers operating in sonoma county. some are already full. we spoke to a spokesperson a bit ago with the county management division. the majority have space

available. cloverdale, citrus fair, sonoma valley high school, petaluma veterans memorial and healdsburg community center. additional evacuations are still ongoing. >> we want to go to pete suratos where there were new evacuations for a lot of people. pete? >> reporter: that's right. new evacuations came in overnight. they are evacuating folks out of fairfield. we moved to this costco. initially, last night, these vehicles were meeting here. fairfield police and vallejo to name a few. they met here and deployed to different areas to help with the evacuation and get out of the area. we want to show video of the sheriff's deputies going door-to-door and saying they needed to evacuate because of

fears of the fire jumping over the ridge from napa county to salano county, where we are standing now. i did get off the phone with the sheriff's office. as far as the fire goes, it's between napa county and salano county. right now, they are doing structural protection at valley end lane. that's the area the fire is at right now. i want to pull up the information we have for you guys in the last live hit when you stee areas that have been evacuated. here is the information we are getting. the evacuations are west north of rockville road and the upper and lower areas of green valley road. that's the latest information we are getting. the fire is right at the border of the counties, between napa and salano counties. we are smelling the smoke and seeing the haze here in this fairfield area. i'm told from folks on the

ground, they are going to clear out this area shortly, not too long from now. we are going move to another area and get more information on that and continue to monitor these things if the evacuations change and more importantly how close the fire is coming through the salano area. >> thank you very much, pete. >> we want to go to meteorologist kari hall. she has been tracking the winds and the conditions outside. this morning, relief of some sort, when it comes to the weather. >> the humidity is higher, calmer winds. we want to show the five main fires we are monitoring. we have the atlas fire right now as pete just mentioned, starting to move to parts of salano county. the partridge fire south of there. the tubbs fire spreading into santa rosa and the nuns fire and is sears point fire. they are all burning at this point and hoping for better

containment today as the winds calm down. right now, wind speeds 3 or 4 miles per hour and blowing those winds from the north, about the east-northeast as we look at what's happening right now throughout the day. our temperatures will also be on the cooler side, compared to what we have had recently, higher humidity, calmer winds and cooler temperatures. all of this will hopefully help those firefighters on the front lines this morning. as we head over to mike, tracking the latest commute. >> that's right, kari. smart train is running again, with limited service along 101, which is open this morning, much different than yesterday. it opened last evening about 4:00. highway 37 opened yesterday morning. both of those major morning commute spots are open. returning traffic should be heavier today than yesterday on columbus day for a lot of folks. we have closures as well as limited service. santa rosa city bus is limited.

we are back with breaking news coverage of those wildfires in the north bay. here is an updated map of the evacuations from the atlas fire in napa and solano county. this includes the area of green valley, west of green valley road. it includes twin sisters road and the area north of rockville road up to solano county line. that evacuation area is bordered to the east of the soon valley

road. napa and solano county residents have four evacuation centers for them. the gym, calistoga fairgrounds, crosswalk community church and the community college in fairfield. there are multiple front lines in yountville. they used the roadway to block the fire from spreading. one man told us he stayed behind. here is how he saved his home. >> we didn't have power, so i had to hook the tractor up to the generator and rewire the house so i had water up there. i was able to save the house, but we lost the tank house. >> the silverado trail has several wineries along or nearby. we know -- >> the estate in napa sadly has been destroyed.

our own vicky nguyeew the fires in the north bay hit home for many of us. our own vicky nguyen grew up in santa rosa and her childhood neighborhood, including the home where she grew up, now gone. her inlaws home is also destroyed, along with so many others. listen as she talks to the man there now. >> reporter: talk to us about this community for people who didn't grow up here like we did. tell us about santa rosa. >> it's a strong community. everybody helps everybody. it's just -- >> it got emotional for him. he had been talking to her for some time. they went to junior high school together. despite the tragedy, he will return. >> we continue to see those images of destruction.

it sinks in when you are able to compare the before and after. >> skrcott mcgrew joins us. he's been collecting photos. >> we start with the dramatic before and after image of cough coffey park what it looked like before the fire and on the right, what it looks like today. hundreds of homes leveled. here is the aftermath picture, all by itself. there's not a home or building that was spared, block after block, homes and cars, trees destroyed there. we mentioned wineries throughout the morning. the seniorella winery. we were sent this striking before and after photograph. the winery destroyed this morning. hilton hotel in santa rosa an round barn bailiff, you can see the before and after.

east bay peninsula and the south bay as well as san francisco will have unhealthy air quality today. so, you should limit your outdoor exposure and turn your air-conditioning on recirculate if you can. wear a breathing mask if you have to go outside and if you feel nauseous or start coughing repeatedly, seek medical attention. we have all this information on www.nbcbayarea.com. we start out this morning with the relative humidity much higher than yesterday. right now, navato, 71%. in napa, we can see the relative humidity this morning, 66%. compare that to the teens we had yesterday. it was so dry starting out. this morning, as we take a live look outside in san rafael, we are not seeing any fog this morning, even though that humidity is really high. then we are looking now in san jose with a mostly clear start this morning. temperatures in the mid-50s. we also have mostly 50s from san

francisco and then cooler 40s for much of the north bay. that also is a plus this morning, starting out on the weather front. our high temperatures today, reaching up to 80 degrees in santa rosa. napa, 79 degrees. oakland, a high of 75 and 81 degrees in san jose. immaterialed to show you the seven day forecast for the north bay. this will be really important for the next several days. we will have a lot of wildfires burning. we are going to continue to monitor the winds. the winds will calm down today, but a lot of smoke just hovering in those areas. tomorrow, those winds will pick up as temperatures cool down a couple degrees in some spots. this will be something cal fire will definitely be monitoring, then we'll have winds at 5-10, maybe 15 miles per hour for the end of the week. another time frame we'll be watching thereby this weekend. the temperatures will be warming up and the potential to see the

winds picking up, possibly sustained winds at 20 miles an hour. that may fan the flames. san francisco seven day forecast will be cooling down over the next couple days. still a lot of smoke lingering today at different times because the wind is so light and variable. for the weekend, warmer. inland, highs in the low 80s. cooler tomorrow and then warming up just in time for the weekend. as we head over to mike, tracking the effect on your tuesday commute. >> you are talking a longer fight for the fires. yesterday was just one day. now, south of the bay bridge, everything moves smoothly. tuesday, we expect more traffic. i will alert you to anything big. highway 37 and 101 are both open. 37 coming between navato and vallejo, 101 through santa rosa. some off ramps are closed

name and password. if you are not, visit the not a customer. it should be clear to understand. solano county is under evacuation. this is a rural area. this is a map of the effected area. living along twin sisters road and joyce lane were told to leave last night. this is video of sheriffs deputies going door-to-door to make sure everyone got out. some people were able to get some of their belongings. trucks hauling trailers. cheryl hurd spoke with officers who droeve around getting the word out. >> the fire is probably going to come over the hillside. mandatory evacuation. >> reporter: how long do you think the fire is going to take to get here? >> i don't know that answer. that is for cal fire. we are doing our job and letting everybody know to leave the area. >> there are 70 homes in that

area. several people did heed to that area and got out. >> a lot of people in santa rosa suffered much devastation. some neighborhoods were spared. homes there are without power. some have evacuees. they have returned back, including laura, with that 3-month-old and 3-year-old. she says, for now, she is staying put. >> i'm a vigilante. i'm going to fight this fire ourselves, right. we have hoses, we can do it. i want to save my house. it's really scary. we are one of the only safe houses in the neighborhood, right? >> she says her mother who doesn't live far from her lost their home. >> firefighters have mobilized to fight the flames. invest southeast of santa rosa.

>> good tuesday morning to you. thank you for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we continue to monitor the devastating wildfires in the north bay. here are where things stand. there are at least ten confirmed deaths related to those destructive fires. seven in sonoma county tworks in napa and one in mand see know. >> there are 100 missing person reports. firefighters say this is likely because of spotty cell service in the area. 1500 structures are gone. cal fire admits that number is conservative. an estimated 20,000 people are forced out of their homes with evacuations extending. water notices have been sent for napa. here is a map of the four notable fires we are watching this morning. more than 60,000 acres charred, so far, in sonoma and napa counties. 30,000 acres burned in the so-called tbs
