[ inaudible ] breaking news this morning. there are two new evacuation areas announced in the last couple hours. fast-moving flames spreading by the minute. new video showing the chaos happening on the fire line. crews battling fires on multiple fronts in the north bay. we are live with dangers firefighters are facing in the days to come. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. our coverage continues on the devastating wildfires. there are two new mandatory evacuation orders overnight. in sonoma county, moon mountain

road, mission way, london way, martin road and adobe way in sonoma valley are being told to leave their homes immediately. >> in napa county, calistoga is under new evacuation orders. that covers residents north of grant street. >> in the meantime, in solano county, upper and lower green valley, off i-80 near fairfield, twin sisters road, still under mandatory evacuations. >> the new evacuations come as the fires continue to spread. at least 60,000 acres burned in sonoma and napa areas. firefighters are worried the fire spreading will mean more. the death toll is rising and stands at 17 people. more than 2,000 homes and businesses are gone. >> things are still developing at this moment.

>> "today in the bay's" bob redell is heading to one of those evacuation areas. he joins us right now by phone. bob? >> caller: good morning to you. we are on highway 12. this is a section of roadway that if you live along here, be ready to go. east of us, to the right side we have seen the fire lines. it appears the fire is -- overnight. we see cal fire trucks. getting here is a challenge because of the road closures, parts of highway 12 are shut down, which we are on right now. sections of 121, 128 having smoke in the area. the nuns fire in the kenwood area. as i look to the east, we see the fire lines there.

there is some flames, but they are not high flames. they were clearly suppressed overnight. the red flag warning in effect inching up during the morning. it doesn't look good in terms of what the conditions are for people as the sunrises there this morning. live in sonoma county, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. we'll know more as the sunrises. >> as the flames spread, the weather isn't helping firefighters. >> no. the red flag warning. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall for an update on the winds. >> we are having calm winds. the red flag warning begins this evening. the highest winds will be tomorrow morning. we have a little bit of time here to try to get a little more containment. i wanted to show you exactly where these four fires are as we look at the one, the atlas fire, just to the south of yountville,

that's the atlas fire moving into solano county. the partridge fire to the south of there and we talked to bob, near the nuns fire in sonoma county and the tubbs fire has been affecting parts of santa rosa. the red flag warning, once again, increases the fire danger as the winds increase and the humidity drops. winds coming in from the north-northeast at 20-30 miles per hour starting this evening and peaking tomorrow morning. the gusts may reach over 50 miles an hour for the mountain ridges, the hill tops and that's where we will see the highest gusts. the humidity will be going down once again. we'll continue to monitor those winds speeds as we go through the day. an update on how things are moving as far as highways, the road closures, let's head to mike. >> they continue to shift as it has fire shifts. highway 12, yesterday, we had a

lot of closures, downed power lines and fire here outside santa rosa. those parts reopened. bob is coming up through here, in toward the glen ellen area. he also talked about the closure and 128 through the atlas area. i want to focus on calistoga. that's the latest push from nbc bay area, talking about the evacuation area around grant road. they are talking calistoga and highway 29 with a closure there as well. these are the main roadways that are closed. avad the area through this portion. the shifts happened as the fire moves over between napa and fairfield. we told you about the evacuations for green valley. that has resulted in -- just off i-80. i-80 itself remains open. we track these major highways. the north bay commute is able to get down on i-80 just fine. back to you.

progress firefighters are making on the fires burning in 4:39 now as we continue to follow the progress firefighters are making on the fires burning in the north bay this morning. as you can see there, that is part of the 60,000 acres burning in sonoma and napa counties. this morning, sonoma county residents are wondering, what's next for their community. >> "today in the bay's" teri mcsweeney has more. >> reporter: two members of congress vowing to get funding for the victims. state and local firefighters were there as well and recognized for what they have already done. [ applause ] >> reporter: spontaneous standing ovation at last night's meeting. congressmen vowing to fight for their districts. the fire chief choked up talking about the crews being overwhelmed that first night.

[ inaudible ] >> reporter: there were questions that had no answers, y like, how did the fires start and when can they be allowed to return home. most got the answers they were looking for, at least the questions that could be answered. some were wondering more about renters than homeowners. they couldn't be at last night's meeting because they are stuck in evacuation shelters. terry mcsweeney for "today in the bay." wind concerns across the bay area. we are going to look at kari. this is something people are worried about again. >> right. this morning, mostly calm winds. delta, winds picking up at 17 miles an hour. elsewhere, it is fairly calm. that changes later today.

progress firefighters are making on the fire burning in the north bay this morning. the heart ache as people return to sometimes, literally nothing. hard to see. the stories are heart breaking. the fire rages on. >> good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. mike and kari, the whole team is here watching the weather hoping to give these firefighters a break. >> the window to have a little bit of a break is quickly closing. the winds will pick up this evening and tomorrow morning. here is a live look outside in san rafael. a lot of people up and heading farther to the south as we look at the curve. there's also been really smokey around the north bay and the wind has been carrying that smoke into san francisco and parts of the east bay. even smelling that smoke in the south bay. we are starting out with a very light wind, but it is coming out of the north as we go through the day. our winds will be increasing as

we will have another cold, dry front moving through as we go through the day. here is a look at the forecast wind speed for 4:30 this afternoon. these are sustained winds. the colors here indicating which direction the winds will be coming from. it is going to be a lot more smokey today than we had the past couple days. some of those areas where we are going to have very poor air quality, then the winds increase thg evening as the gusts will be picking up. the sustained winds are going to be 10-20 miles an hour. we start out this morning with much higher humidity and that is a good thing. the humidity in oakland is 100%. we are also getting patchy fog developing along the coastline. santa rosa starts this morning at 92% so that kind of suppresses the fire and also with the lighter wind, we don't see it really spreading as quickly, but, once again, things will be changing.

as we start out the day in the napa county area, we'll be at 50 degrees at 8:00. then, as we go into the afternoon, temperatures staying down as well. it will reach into the mid-70s today. the air quality, as we mentioned will be dangerous in the north bay and unhealthy for the rest of the bay area. we will have smoke off and on and increasing the amount of smoke and the pollutants in the air headed for tomorrow morning. right now, the temperatures have come down to 42 degrees in santa rosa. napa, say degrees. low to mid-50s elsewhere across the bay area with high temperatures this afternoon reaching up to 76 degrees. it will be 71 in oakland, san francisco also cooler at 66 degrees. i want to show you the seven day forecast for the north bay. the winds will be crucial here. now, this afternoon, the red flag warning kicks in and the winds picking up. we will have those winds

sustained at 20-30 miles an hour. if you are south of where you can see the flames or where we have smoke, the wildfire may be spreading into your direction. the winds pushing from north to south and that could spread those flames to the south as well. it continues into early tomorrow morning, then a little bit of a break in the winds before they pick up once again for the weekend as the temperatures go up and down, we'll have the fronts coming through. looking at san francisco in the forecast for the rest of the week, mid-60s today and the next several days expect more smoke possibly, more of that ash once again, moving into san francisco and for the weekend, low 70s in the forecast. for the inland areas, east bay, south bay and we are going to see those temperatures in the mid-70s cooler than normal for this time of year. the heat index for saturday and sunday. as we head over to mike, starting with info for the transit line. >> that's right. all those cars are burnt.

shells of cars where homes used to be. locals trying to get through the area, sonoma county transit is running today, it was not yesterday. limited bus service. vine is a smaller bus service that goes through napa, critical there. they are running limited service today. limited service today for the smart trains. free service south of santa rosa. the airport line is not running because of the fire near the track. check the updates on their websites. we are talking about these changes because with all these closures, the orange squares talking road closures. they are major road closures. here is 128, continuing through the atlas area. calistoga and now highway 129 heading toward the grant road area. they are all being evacuated through calistoga. highway 12 better from glen

ellen. bob has been talk about it. he's driven through the area. tough getting through there. we have seen the fire shift as kari is talking with the winds shifting. napa and fairfield, a fire west of i-80. we have been hearing time-to-time, they have been escorting groups as smoke comes through the area. this is the area where more e vakuations. the wind is pushing down. i-80 remains smooth and no warnings from chp or closures. the rest of your commute is fine getting toward highway 37 and 101. they continue to be open this morning. no changes for the major roadways. that is good news. the entire area is the one affected by the fires. that's why the north bay is a major concern and continuing to change that. we'll track this and send it back to you. >> we'll keep checking back with you. here is a look at the latest power outage in the north bay. >> crews started assessing

damage tuesday. nearly 800 crew members will be responding. according to the utilities website, as of tuesday afternoon, pg&e reported 75,000 customers without power in sonoma and napa county. the utility shut off gas to 44,000 customers. >> amazing stories from people in the fire's path. we spoke to a man from glen ellen who was able to save his house without using water. >> i didn't evacuate. some say it's dumb or crazy, but i have my house. i'm happy about it. >> that man dug a line around his home with a shovel. also using that shovel to dump debris on to the flames. the city of santa rosa hit especially hard by the wildfire. multiple neighborhoods are leveled. this includes coffey park.
