weather. the weather plays a big role in the fight of the fire. >> it does. we have had winds shifting the past couple days. thankfully over the weekend, the winds were not as strong as expected. we are going to have poor air quality across the bay. outside in san francisco, another spare the air alert day especially for the north bay. inland areas, some of the valleys that smoke will settle in. winds will be light and variable. at times things will change. we have a mainly offshore flow with winds picking up at 5 miles per hour but for the most part looking calm, which is great news. then we have a shift as we head into the day tomorrow. as we will have that return of the on shore flow. it's going to transport more humidity and also cooler temperatures into the bay area. i'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. let's start with a crash in san jose. >> that's right, kari. it comes toward the junction.

look at that. traffic flow appears to be normal. we have a normal flow from north 101. now that volume builds down 680. that's what i was worried about. the two right lanes blocked at king road before the critical 101 and 280 interchange. we'll track that progress. no injuries from that report. that moved to the shoulder, then a second occurred. more slowing off the carquinez bridge and the north bay continues with local closures for the areas. the off ramps for 101. 101, 37 and interstate 80 remain open. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. back to breaking coverage of the wildfires burning here in california. i want you to see this brand-new video from overnight. it is dramatic. it captures two roommates escaping from the growing cascade fire. you can see the confusion here

and the growing flames. the embers, even. you can feel the heat as the two men get away in their suv from the growing wildfire. >> oh, my god. you are going to have to cut to the left. >> open the gate. open the gate. i can't breathe. >> i can't breathe, dude. >> it will be all right. >> we shouldn't be driving into this gorge. oh, my god. >> look at the meadow, dude. i can't breathe. you can do it, girl. >> the good news is they actually made it out okay. sadly, they lost everything in the fire. >> this morning, more wildfire evacuees will return home and find out what's left of their belongings. some evacuation orders and advisories are over. that includes the entire city of calistoga and the city of napa

along the gordon valley area. santa rosa, allowing people to return to their communities. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is in santa rosa with the emotional day for the homeowners. pete, this is the beginning as they try to rebuild. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, marcus. really, the beginning. i just want to tell viewers, those who are homeowners, imagining for the folks coming here today, the evacuation order was lifted in this area just off carriage lane in carriage court. you are going to see the damage. damage like you see behind me. their homes are gone and emotional pain. the crews were able to catch up with folks as they were walking here down carriage lane last night. >> they are all gone. they look just like that couch across the street, just level. >> reporter: now, that's dan who was here to comfort his girlfriend, valerie, whose home is here on carriage lane. she was just learning, as well as a few dozen homeowners on the

street, she lost her home as a result of the fires we have seen here over the past week. not to mention, it was the areas where we are standing in santa rosa are one of the only areas where those evacuation orders were lifted roughly around 5:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. residents like valerie saw this damage face-to-face for the first time when those evacuation orders were lifted. she says amid all of this, she explained to the crews she is feeling a sense of relief. >> encouraging because there's things left. there's things to salvage. there's going to be stuff to take away. all is not lost. that was our fear. >> reporter: now, it's unclear how many people have returned as of the evacuation order lifted. you can expect to see more people showing up today in santa rosa. i want to point out, officials want folks to be aware, stay individual lent of their surroundings, due to the fire

conditions and adhere to the road closures. we are seeing plenty of them this morning. it's going to be a very emotional time for them. we are telling them to exercise caution and safety. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, pete. at 6:06, there is a new warning this morning, potential health hazards for people returning to their home. don't allow children to play in the ash. if you get ash on your skin, wash it off as soon as possible. gently sweep surfaces of ash. try not to get dust or particles in the air. always wear protective masks near the ash. kaiser permanente hospital in santa rosa is still closed. this is a place one week ago we saw the nurses running patients out of the building as the flames got closer. you can see it there. those were the most powerful images we have seen coming out of the fire. sunday, they reserved comments

that kaiser was ready to reopen. they are not ready to resume normal operations. as soon as the north bay fire started, firefighters started sending engines and crews to help. that's having impact here as crews work several hours. >> they battled a house fire overnight. kris sanchez joins us from there. firefighters told us they are making sure they answer calls here at home and in the north bay. >> reporter: right. the firefighters that responded to this house fire here in south san jose had been on the clock 12 hours and still had 36 hours to go as they tried to back fill for the crews that went up to the north bay wildfire. yet, they managed to get this under control within about 30 minutes. when fire crews arrived on scene, they thought perhaps the family was trapped inside that home. fortunately, firefighters found the house was empty. the garage was engulfed, spreading into the rest of the house and the garage. fire crews fought a grass fire

on mt. hamilton road but not before that blaze claimed two homes. crews are working longer shifts to back fill the three fire engines and crews assisting in the north bay wildfire. >> we have been on duty since 8:00 this morning and will be on for another 36 hours. yeah, it's been a long day so far, already. >> reporter: you can see the house is now boarded up. it's not going to be livable for a while. the family that lived here is staying with relatives for a while. we can tell you, there is a lot of dry grass around the bay area. that is a concern for firefighters because they are stretched thin. they are not the only agency sending mutual aid up to the wildfires 17 states and crews 266 engines from other states, plus australia. that's a lot of folks on the fire line up there. try to keep it safe here at home. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay."

>> certainly has been a tough time for firefighters throughout the bay as they fight those up north and sparking in other areas. our coverage on the fires, their impact and the aftermath continues at www.nbcbayarea.com. if you want to help, compile a list of ways you can do that. you can find all that information on our home page. happening today, attorneys are supposed to start narrowing down the jury pool in the trial surrounding the deadly shooting of kate steilel. jose shot and killed her in july of 2015. he is an undocumented immigrant. the case has since sparked a national debate about immigration policies in sanctuary cities. the trial is expected to last several weeks, if not longer. a south bay man is in custody after he drove 20 miles the wrong way on two freeways. this ended in a crash that sent the suspect and another driver

to the hospital with major injuries. chp says that car driven by a 25-year-old edwin rodriguez started going the wrong way on interstate 680 in berryessa. he crashed into a van in sand hill road in menlo park. this is where chp set up the spike stripes. he is facing dui charges. >> the screeching sound is less, it is not your imagination. the redesign reduced the sound by at least 15 decembibles. bart says part of the progress involves the rails themselves. a solution has to be worked out for that part of the equation. coming up on 6:11 with a mostly clear and cool start as you get ready to head out the

door. in the peninsula, 55 degrees. 52 in the south bay. look at the north bay. we drop to 43 degrees. grab a coat once again this morning with the chilly temperatures. also, a lot of smoke lingering in the north bay. we look at the high temperatures this afternoon, it is still going to feel very much like summer. also for the inland areas, a lot of changes on the way. we'll talk about that coming up at 6:14. mike is updating the crashes in the south bay. >> that's right. we start with south 680. it's cleared. that's the good news. a new one on north 101 causing slowing. we'll update that. meanwhile, another one we have been following for a while, northbound 680 leads the off ramp closed. that's for those traveling north. the counter commute, no problems. the upper east shore freeway at the top of the screen, the crash in richmond cleared from the roadway. 40 minutes from highway 4 is the back up at the bay bridge. back to you.

on the wildfires, it's going to be a chilly start. we will have some light winds. temperatures in sonoma county at 42 degrees, warming up quickly, though. it is going to be a hot afternoon. this is the last day of these really warm temperatures. we'll talk about cooler air and rain in the forecast in five minutes. look at the travel times. slower drive for 880 southbound past the san mateo bridge. we are seeing a problem as you approach the bridge at the toll plaza. we'll talk about that coming up. later today, the california state treasurer will decide whether to drop, increase or extend sanctions on wells fargo. they were put in place after wells fargo created millions of fake accounts and charged customers for them. today's announcement comes at 9:30. back to the fire coverage in the north bay. firefighters working to stop the

flames from reaching the ledson winery on highway 12. flames surrounded the winery over the weekend. at this time, they remain vigilant. other wineries may reopen for the first time since the fire started. the winery community is coming together to support each other. st. claire brown winery has stayed open. >> starting monday, a lot of them will be opening again in our area. >> we don't know what the impact will be for quite some time. but, you know, it's really about people. >> people say they hope things get back to normal very soon. they still don't know the cost of the damage because the fires are still, sadly, doing damage. >> scott mcgrew some of those first numbers are coming in. >> that's right. it's an estimate but the state senator from sonoma says it's about $2 billion. when you combine it with santa rosa, the estimate is $3

billion. as we pointed out, estimates will grow because the fires are nowhere near out. tesla fires hundreds of people at the fremont factory and palo alto headquarters as they struggle to build the new model 3. the company says it built 260 of the new model in the past quarter. that's less than three cars coming off the assembly line in a day. hundreds of thousands of people put down deposits to reserve a new car. a few hundred have received them. the company said at the time, it hoped to make 20,000 cars a month. based on the last numbers, it's making 90 cars a month. shares in tesla worth watching. the dow coming off five straight weeks of gains. facebook under fire for the russian involvement. we are going to talk more about that tomorrow morning. there is interesting stuff going on in facebook. stuff that sheryl said last week as well. you know what? it's not right. i'm going to show you tomorrow

temperatures. the progress will continue as we go through the week with much better weather. as we start out this morning, we have mostly clear skies. look at how cool it is in parts of the north bay. look at fairfield. 40 degrees. we are getting upper 30s in some spots. napa is at 48. 43 in santa rosa. san francisco you are walking out the door to 57 degrees and 52 right now in san jose. let's get a look at the high temperatures for the afternoon. reaching into the mid-80s in san jose. more gan hill, 89 degrees, the east bay reaching the upper 80s. this is going to feel more like summer. this is the weather we had yesterday and it continues today. even along the coast, upper 70s to lower 80s. half-moon bay, embarcadero, 78 degrees and 80 in the mission district with upper 80s in parts of the north bay. as you head out for the commute, you may start out with the heater on. as the day goes on, you'll be

enjoying much more comfortable weather, reaching the low 70s in the east bay today. the other big thing has been the wind. today, blowing offshore, a very dry wind. it does stay mostly calm. winds picking up for the afternoon. only 5 miles per hour. that's really good news as we try to get a good direction of the spreading of the wildfires and get some containment as we go through the day. very light wind. also, a chance of rain in the forecast. starting tomorrow, higher humidity. the return of then shore flow. by thursday, tracking rain moving to the north bay, that continues into friday. it's the first time we have had rain in the forecast for at least the past couple months. the computer models showing the potential of at least .10 inch rain. higher in sonoma county, possible .25 inch of rain. again, that is thursday evening into friday. we'll talk more about that. mike is checking in on traffic.

>> it is good from the sensor read. northbound 101 by the airport, there's a crash. that's blocking one lane. this is still blocking the off ramp north 680 over the last five minutes. we have seen this slowing toward fremont. that is a problem for folks familiar with the landmark where the crash is. the off ramp is closed, a bit to the north. avoid the area and take victoria. over here, we have a crash reported getting to the san mateo toll plaza blocking the two middle lanes. that's a problem. the build from hayward is on. over here, slowing down the east shore froway as well as the north bay, traffic flowing. that crash cleared at cherry glen. back to you. >> thank you, mike. >> neighbors helping neighbors. the community stepping up to help fire victims get basic

hotel points with little explanation. >> he turned to our consumer team for help. >> he had nearly 600,000 starwood hotel points, which translate into a decent amount of money. if you bought them, they would cost $21,000. tony says he called starwood back in december to confirm his points weren't going to expire. he says he was told he was fine as long as he kept his credit card, which he did. a few months later, tony saw 263,000 points vanish from his account. they were deducted with a forfeitture message. he called them to get the points back and explained the message. he had no luck so he turned to us for help. we contacted starwood and they reinstated his z points. that is a savings of nearly $9,000. starwood didn't explain why he lost the points.

the worth fire in california history. the headlines, 40 people are confirmed dead with hundreds still missing. all eyes on a new fire, which continues to burn in the oakmont area. in some areas, people are finally returning back to their homes including the city of calistoga, which has been desserted for days. pg&e plans to resore power in napa and sonoma county. the tubbs fire that caused most of the destruction in santa rosa is 60% containment. the atlas fire in napa and solano county sits at 65%. the pocket fire, north of geyserville is 30% contained. the nuns fire is 40% contained. >> nbc bay area has been bringing team coverage of the story for the week on air and online. let's start with meteorologist kari hall to look at the conditions firefighters will face today. >> it's been all about the

temperatures, wind speed and direction and the humidity. now, rain in the forecast. it's going to be a very warm day as the firefighters try to get more containment this afternoon with temperatures in the upper 80s. think about them being very close to wildfires, it is going to be unbearable there. the rest of the bay area feels like summer today. this is the last day before we will have a shift in the winds bringing in an on shore flow and cooler temperatures along with the higher humidity. look at that, down the line, starting out on thursday evening, we will have rain moving into the bay area. really positive news here on the weather front. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike has an update on the crash near a san jose airport. >> this is northbound 101. you can cecil con valley starting the northbound build. 101 is a tougher drive toward the airport because of that crash blocking one lane.

we are showing you that north of 682 interchange. the freeway jams up. also jamming up westbound 92 approaching the toll plaza for the san mateo bridge. that crash blocking two middle lanes, the tow truck having a bad time. we have hope in the future. approaching the bridge, we have slowing for the upper east shore freeway. i'll show you the north bay. you have bigger news and the battle that continues. 6:33. back to the top story this morning. the battle continues as crews in the north bay are busy working another fire right now. it's called the oakmont fire. it's burning east of highway 12 in sonoma county. this is between santa rosa. we are told 500 acres burned and it is 15% contained. >> we sent sharon katsuda to the area. so sad, you found out

devastating news from a family. >> reporter: that's right. thes terrible news. you can see how it is progressing. when we arrived, we only saw a black, smokey ridge line. now, you can see active flames. as we were talking to you, cal fire volunteer came up and shared sad news. his sister told him yesterday, her boyfriend, 27-year-old joshua passed away at the hospital yesterday around 1:00 p.m. you can see from his facebook page, his friends are sending condolences to family saying r.i.p., josh. a post on october 9th, a friend writes, glad you marked yourself safe. that was on october 9th. the family friend says joshua lived in the leisure park mobile home park in santa rosa. joshua had asthma and complained of the smoke from the fire. >> saying all day, the smoke is

closing my lungs up. the smoke is closing my lungs up and taking treatments all day. finally, just dropped in front of my sister. she called 911. >> reporter: joshua has a 5-year-old son, nathan. like so many other families in the north bay have been watching the fires, ready to evacuate, if needed. you can see the fire back here live along the ridge line. darren tells me he's been so busy helping to volunteer and fuel the engines for the fire trucks arnds here, he hasn't had a chance to set up a gofundme account for his sister's boyfriend. they are working on that at this time. reporting live near oakmont, sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, sharon. at 6:35. as firefighters continue to work around the clock to douse the remainder of the flames, many residents are returning home to

find there's nothing left. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in calistoga where evacuation orders were just lifted, bob. >> reporter: lifted yesterday afternoon at 2:00. good morning to you, marcus and laura. cal fire lifted the mandatory evacuations for the small town of calistoga in upper and northern napa county. you can see behind me, it appears to be coming back to life this monday morning. more than 5000 people were first to evacuate as the fires on mt. st. helena speweep down. as you can imagine, several thousand returning home rksz there was a long line of cars north of highway 29 waiting to clear the police check point yesterday afternoon. fortunately, the city was largely spared. residents returned to their neighborhood, their homes, thankfully intact with ash on the street, the smell of smoke in the air and memories of when they were told to get out.

>> scary. 4:00 in the morning, getting a knock on the door. it's very terrifying. they are telling you, you have to leave and try to get my kids up is very hard. >> fire is everywhere. >> reporter: you weren't sure what you would come back to? >> yeah. it's something i tried to not think about. but it did come up in my mind a lot. it was scary. >> reporter: as far as the business zs are concerned here in calistoga, a grocery and hardware store are open. a number of other businesses remain closed. we expect them to open later today or later in the week. live in calistoga, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob, thanks so much for the update. santa rosa police are reiterating a zero tolerance for looters and anyone caught will be prosecuted. >> that's a message on facebook. the cameras were able to catch up as these officers arrested this man who was looting homes,

they say. this was in coffey park, in that neighborhood. officers from hillsborough laid out items that were stolen including cell phones, jewelry and a b.b. gun. police took the man into custody. chp, meanwhile, are reminding everyone, all drones are grounded indefinitely in all active fire areas. fire emergency crews are assisting the fires from the air. over the weekend, a cal fire air team was briefly grounded when police say a 24-year-old man flew a drone near petaluma airport. the man was cited and the drone confiscated. >> school districts that closed because of the fires will reopen. that includes some in sonoma county. many will remain closed, that includes santa rosa schools, which will be closed all week. we have a full list at www.nbcbayarea.com. the college level, san francisco state university also resumes classes today. the school shut down last week

because of bad air quality. university leaders say they have more res prate prpirators avail people who need them. happening today, full service in marin is set to resume. smart is offering free rides through wednesday for people affected by the fires. the lines run from the airport to downtown san rafael with several stops in between. right now, at 6:39, as the sunrises this morning, still smoke across the bay area, especially in san francisco and the north bay. as we take a live look, all clear skies and another spare the air alert day. some of that smoke is settling into the valleys and the winds are still quite variable. at times, it may look good out there, smell good and then it changes. just a heads up about that. looking at the dominant wind direction this morning blowing offshore. we have a mostly calm wind. the winds will stay nice and

right now, 6:44 on this monday morning. a cold start in sonoma county. we are still monitoring the weather conditions as we are tracking the north bay wildfires. temperatures start out in the low 40s, but rise quickly to the upper 80s. in napa county, still very high humidity and that will drop as we go through the day with highs reaching into the upper 80s. warm temperatures and light winds. more on that and the chance of rain in the forecast coming up in five minutes. closures in the north bay. we are watching the san mateo bridge. this looks fine, but the

looking for that missing worker. all the workers were either on a platform or adjacent barge. this is in new orleans. there is a possibility oil is leaking into the lake. e.p.a. is now involved in helping tackle the growing water crisis in hurricane ravages puerto rico. it's been three weeks since hurricane maria tore through. the number dead is 38. the e.p.a. is now testing water wells to make sure they are safe. 85% of puerto rico lxxxv% of pu without power. dianne feinstein announced her plans to run for re-election. she has competition. devon de leon will challenge feinstein. many others will jump in as

well. democratic heavyweights are throwing their support behind the five-time u.s. senator. presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns has been shut down by governor jerry brown. lawmakers approved it because of the presidential election. to this day, president trump has not released his tax returns. he said he was concerned about the law starting a wave of requirements. he suggested the courts would overturn it. a new fee schedule takes effect today. costs go up for all kind of services. in most cases, the hikes are relatively small. in some cases, they are large. that includes charging residents $100 when police are called for a second time in any given year to a security system false alarm. so far, the nfl is not responding publicly to the

collusion grievance filed by san francisco 49er quarterback colin kaepernick. he filed a grievance yesterday. he accuses nfl owners of depriving them employment rights. he opted out of his final year with the 49ers. since then, he's gone unsigned. kaepernick's attorney issued a statement saying, colin kaepernick's goal has always been and remains to be treated fairly by the league he performed at the highest level for and to return to the football playing field. an arbitrator will decide whether to remediate the proceedings. the president wants the nfl to force players to stand. it may work against him. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. the president may have turned it into a free speech issue.

the screen, looking at the current temperature of 48 degrees. on the other side, in the east bay, 51 degrees, a clear start. san francisco, right now, 58 degrees. then, as we look at the high temperatures for this afternoon, still feeling like summer out there with some mid to upper 80s in parts of the south bay. moving toward the east bay, walnut creek will see a high of 86 degrees. 83 in oakland. for the peninsula, reaching the lower 80s in palo alto and redwood city. san francisco in the 80s. 82 in mission district. this is going to be difficult for everyone out there volunteering, the firefighters. it is going to be another warm day. then, as we look at the south bay, kids getting out the door for school, it's going to be cool, long sleeves needed to start and short sleeves as they walk home from school. lower 80s. we talk about that chance for rain and we start to see the

changes for tomorrow as far as the winds and higher humidity as well as the return of fog in san francisco. then, on thursday, that's when we'll start to see the showers moving from north to south, between thursday and friday, it looks like we could measure decent amounts of rain for the north bay. elts where, the rainfall totals will be light. a lot of showers weakening before moving to the south. we could have up to a quarter inch of rain in the north bay. we talked about how far we are off the normal in the north bay. santa rosa, an inch and a half of rain. once again, so far, we haven't measured a drop. showers in the forecast for the end of the week. san francisco, starting to see that on thursday z. then it drys out in time for the weekend. mike, you are tracking a crash on the san mateo bridge? >> i am. looking at a shot on the bay, slowing in the south bay as you would expect. a problem getting to the san mateo bridge. we have a crash being addressed by a tow truck, three vehicles
