where there's jif, there's love. for joining us. we )re on early because of a fie burning in the santa cruz good morning. thanks for joining us. we're on early this morning because of a fire now burning in the santa cruz mountains, forcing evacuations. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm marcus washington. >> we broke into programming to tell you about this at 3:00 a.m., to inform you the fire was tearing through the santa cruz mountains. mandatory evacuations are underway in bear creek canyon. this is a look at the location of the brush fire in boulder creek. it is burning southwest of saratoga and los gatos. it is north of ben gloman. the flames sprung up overnight near bear creek road and deer

creek road. right now, evacuees are gathering at boulder creek elementary school. we have one crew at the makeshift shelter. you see the live photo of that right now. >> the mandatory evacuation order is affecting more than 100 people. all of them had to leave their homes in a scramble in the middle of the night. again, looking live at one of the evacuation centers, boulder creek elementary school. firefighters are telling people whose homes are not under mandatory evacuation they should leave if they feel they are in danger. very important, do not wait for an official order. leave if you feel unsafe. boulder creek elementary school is the designated elementary school. some folks arrived there around 2:00 this morning. >> a friend came banging, saying, the sheriff is here. saying, the sheriff is here? i didn't do anything wrong. honest. the people here that, you know,

are welcoming. very nice man set up a chair over here because he said it was the warmer part of the room. being an old lady, i get special treatment. i brought a complete change of clothes. i got a vest and a jacket on. so, yeah, i'm set. >> ellen awoke in the middle of the night but had foresight to grab a few things. she had no idea what was happening oat first but thanks o friends, she was able to get out and get to the shelter. we've been talking about fire danger mostly in the north bay but now this. >> it can happen anywhere at any time, even without the red flag warnings in effect. we are starting out this morning with some very cool temperatures. a little milder as we look at san jose and also down to santa cruz, where the temperatures are starting out in the upper 50s.

our humidity will start out fairly low and then drop as we go through the day. it looks like we'll have some pretty good humidity as we go into tonight and around the bear creek canyon area, we'll be at 98%. also higher humidity in the north bay as they continue to get containment on those wildfires. our winds start out calm. unfortunately, when you have the calm winds, it is hard to get an idea of exactly which direction the winds could be -- or the fire could be threading. good news, it helps the firefighters in battling the flames. that's what we are going to see not only for the next couple of hours but also throughout the day. some very light winds. and the humidity going up, as well, as we start to see the winds coming in on shore. we will have wind speeds at 5, maybe up to 10 mile an hour throughout the day. light winds and also some higher humidity this morning. hopefully that will help some of those crews there contain those

flames. as we head over to mike, updating how this may affect your road closures. >> talking about the santa cruz mountains, so naturally, concerned about highway 17 as well as the homes. as far as the commute goes, highway 17 remains open. however, we'll watch for any traffic control necessary. highway 17. my labels disappeared. highway 9. the located there. scotts valley. this is around bear creek and deer creek specifically, as highway 35 around bear creek road. that's where the area immediately affected by the evacuations is. remember last year, there was the washout, and it hasn't been fully repaired. south of there, the locals will know how to get over to 17 and highway 9 if you're not local to the area. stay out of the evacuation zone. highway 17, again, highway 9 moving smoothly now to and from santa cruz. we'll track for any alterations that are necessary as far as that route. highway 1 and 101 would be good

alternates. >> if you don't have to be in that area, don't go there. the update we have for you is the santa cruz mountains fire burned 38 acres at this point. it is causing evacuations for people living in the bear creek area. this is new video showing the fire growing there in the mountains. folks got reverse 911 calls. officials used the reverse 911 to inform residents they needed to evacuate. however, if you didn't get a reverse 911 call and you're not under mandatory evacuation orders, you should leave if you feel in danger. don't wait. there are several agencies fighting the fire right now. cal fire is there. crews from santa clara county also out there. we've been talking with the sheriff's department, santa clara sheriff's department for updates, as well. 4:05. now to the north bay wildfires. let's catch you up on the latest numbers. the tubbs fire is 75% contained. atlas fire, 70% contains.

nuns fire, 53% contained. the fires together have burned 140,000 acres since last sunday night. >> the wildfire deaths across california is now at 41, including the driver of a water truck, a tanker, that died in a crash yesterday in oakville. authorities say there are still 88 people reported missing and not yet accounted for. >> fire crews may set a backfire in the kenwood area. this would only happen if conditions are perfect. we are heading to the state park to check it out. we'll have that at 5:00 this morning. one of the north bay hospitals shut down due to the fire storm last week is set to reopen. sutter santa rosa had to evacuate 88 patients because it was in the fire's direct path. the reopening is scheduled for 7:00 this morning. investigative unit has been

looking into what may have sparked the north bay wildfires. pg&e is acknowledging the utility had at least eight equipment incidents in the past eight days. our investigative unit says it is significant because cal fire is investigating the possibility that downed fire lines started one or more of the fires. we have discovered state regulators have been concerned about the strength and reliability of pg&e's power poles for some time. happening today, leaders debate a new gun control measure requiring firearms to be stored in locked containers. former council member and current assemblyman proposed guns will placed in locked boxes at home or when owners leave them in unattended cars. san francisco and oakland are among the bay area cities that already have similar laws. 4:07. happening today, the golden state warriors officially start their quest for back to back nba championships when they open their season against the houston rockets. a live look now at oracle arena,

netflix is willing to fall deeper into debt in an effort to gain more viewers. the company is borrowing billions of dollars to pay for exclusive series. it is gambling the strategy will pay off with more subscribers. so far, it is working, azens as netflix has tripled its global audience the past four years. they have 109 million subscribers worldwide. people working for small companies are less likely to get regular cancer screenings. researchers from the american cancer society looked into this, and the key number is this, that workers at companies with fewer than 25 employees are less likely to be up to date on their screenings. that is when compared with people who work at larger corporations. researchers say the disparity is because of economic status and lack of insurance. coming up on "today in the bay," our breaking coverage of the fire burning in the santa cruz mountains continues after the break. right now, 30 acres burning. more than 100 people evacuated.

evacuations are underway in bear creek canyon. back to our breaking news right now. mandatory evacuations are underway in bear creek canyon. this is a look at the location of the brush fire in boulder creek. burning southwest of saratoga and los gatos. it is north of ben loman. the fire now 125 acres, forcing 150 people to evacuate. right now, an evacuation center has been set up at boulder creek elementary school. we have a crew heading to the scene. we will have a live report in minutes. we do know that those flames are ferocious, but we can't do -- we won't see any air drops until the sun comes up. >> right. with this happening overnight, that just making it that much more dangerous because you can't really see what's going on or what direction it's headed in. if you live in the area, it is best to try to get out if you can. we are seeing some very light winds this morning, as we take a live look outside in san jose. and it is mostly clear. we do have some favorable weather conditions.

once they get the air drops underway, we do have some good weather here today. not looking at any major problems. with our temperature starting out in the upper 50s in san jose and palo alto. 60 degrees now in san francisco. as you cross the golden gate bridge to the north bay, temperatures dropping off to the mid 40s. watching the humidity this morning, starting out at about 43% around that beer creek canyon aca -- bear creek canyon area. the north bay, the humidity about 26% to 34% in that area. as we go through the day, the winds will be picking up only slightly. our humidity dropping into the teens for the north bay. so it is going to be very dry once again. at least fror the santa cruz mountains, we'll have higher humidity going up over the overnight hours, when we'll start to see the onshore flow kicking in. that's what we can expect into the evening.

as we look at the wind speeds, we start with calm winds this morning. starting to see those winds shifting offshore. then turning as we go through the day. so that may make things a little more difficult because of the variable winds and then the changing of the wind direction, even into thisevening. our winds not strong, 5 to 10 miles per hour at the most this evening, as we will get cooler temperatures dropping in all across the bay area. that's good news as we take a live look outside. we till hastill have to deal wi air quality that's unhealthy in the north bay. may get worse for the santa clara valley area, as we will be watching how that smoke from the santa cruz mountains drifts into the santa clara valley. moderate air quality. there is still going to be pollutants in the air that makes it dangerous to stay outside for long periods of time. sonoma county, watching the fires there. the temperature trend throughout the morning and into the noon

hour, it will be very chilly to start. mid 40s. temperatures rising into the mid 70s by noon. it won't be as warm as it was yesterday, which is going to be a big positive for this afternoon, seeing those temperatures by noon up to 77 degrees. a lot more humidity to start compared to yesterday. our winds will shift onshore. we'll also be watching a disturbance to the south of us. as we head thursday into friday, there will be the chance of rain. some of the models drying it out just a bit, which is not good news. we are hoping for a little bit more in the way of rain. but we are going to see that chance moving in, especially for the north bay. that's where we will have the highest chance, between thursday night and friday. looking at what one of the computer models is putting out, as far as rain totals that we could see, about 1/10 inch for santa rosa. compare that so just yesterday, when the models were showing up to 1/4 inch of rain.

as it moves to the south, a lot of it fizzling out. looking at the seven-day forecast, we will have the chance of rain, once again, thursday evening into early friday. temperature s cooling down in sn francisco for the lower 60s for the highs. warming up very quickly after that, but the showers moving in, fizzling out after they move out of the north bay. i'll keep tabs on the wind speeds, as well. we'll head over to mike for an update on how the roads are moving now. first of all, a big look of the bay. they're calm for most of the commute, obviously, but we're watching for a bigger volume, of course, than the other day of the week. the first area is the south bay, the santa cruz mountains. talking about the fires, south of los gatos. boulder creek has a locater, as well. highway 9 is open. so is highway 17. these are unaffected as far as closures by the fire. we have an evacuation zone, bear

creek, deer creek. if you've never heard of these roadways because you don't travel through them, don't go there now because they're off highway 17. so far, that's what we have as far as the traffic reports. of the fires for the north bay, we also have those continued closures for 128 and 29. now, we've had a number of areas open up because the evacuation zones have been cleared to locals of the area. there will be local area. law enforcement there is trying to keep everybody safe. i-80, 37 and 101 remain open. the bay bridge toll plaza, no problem there. well, looks like some folks picked the wrong lane. that's about it. 4:21. we continue our coverage on the bear fire. as it has burned 125 acres, forcing 150 people to evacuate. this is in boulder creek. >> went from 30 acres to 150 acres very fast.

we just heard from a santa cruz sheriff lieutenant, giving us a look at what the scene is like. >> right now, we're working on assisting cal fire with evacuations in the bear creek road area. >> okay. and so how many evacuations do we have right now? >> at this point, we have approximately 150 evacuations. >> okay. and what areas are affected at the present time? >> deer creek road, bear creek canyon and some areas in los gatos. >> okay. you guys have -- you guys have mutual aid from other agencies helping with road closures, is that correct? >> california highway patrol and the santa clara sheriff's office assisting with evacuations, as well. >> i'm sure highway 9 is shut down midway from 17 to boulder creek. is that about right? >> portions are, correct. >> and then coming north up into

the area would be shut down somewhere, as well. do you know where that is? >> bear creek road is shut down, as well. >> okay. do you have any advice for anybody in the outlying areas or the general area? >> just to respect our road closures. cal fire is working hard to deal with the fire, and we're working hard to secure the area. to provide assistance with evacuations and keep security. >> okay. and do you expect -- i mean, i'm assuming that we're going to have extended closures beyond where we're at. do you have any idea what areas need to be aware of that? >> yeah. at this point, i don't know. of course, we're not northern tip of the santa cruz mountains, and it depends on the progress that will be made with the fire. >> the flames are getting closer to home. we know that the work is underway. santa clara county sheriff assisting the fire, working the fire lines, as well.

150 people are under evacuation orders. they're at bear creek elementary school. >> lorenzo, can you tell us what's going on right now where you are? >> reporter: yeah. we're standing by, waiting for evacuees. we've been here since about 12:30 last night. we've got about 10 to 15 evac e evacuees at this point. we're just keeping the school open until we're not needed anymore. >> i know that this happened overnight. do you fear that maybe folks who are supposed to be evacuating don't know they're under evacuation orders? >> the information we've got is the sheriff's department has done a great job getting up into the outer lying area and was able to get the information to those folks really well. the people that have come to our
