it is thursday, october 19th- -live look outside in san jose- it is thursday, october 19th. a live look outside over downtown san jose. a beautiful way to start our friday eve. good morning and thank you for joining us, i'm marcus allen. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. it feels a little bit fresh you are out there, like maybe the air quality is better. we know that there's rain come gs. >> we are so looking forward to that rain. we do start out with cloudy skies and also some cool temperatures this morning, looking to see those showers moving in later this afternoon into the evening. right now as you head out the door we have temperatures mostly in the mid 50s, it's a little bit warmer than it was thanks to that cloud cover as we see the approach of those showers still well to the north of us in washington now moving into oregon and then as we go through

the day going to see that rain moving in by this evening. look at the timeline, moving into the north bay by the evening commute, so we will break that down and take a closer look in just a few minutes. mike, you already have a car fire in walnut creek? >> first there was a crash, then a car fire then it sounds like a traffic break. 680 walnut creek it sounds like all lanes should be cleared right now. we will be getting the car moved over off of the roadway and a fire crew due to arrive. no fire going on now and no injuries, but north into walnut creek expect the activity on the right shoulder for a short period of time. getting farther toward the bay bridge look at these travel times, they're moving very nicely through the maze and across into san francisco. back to you. developing this morning, fire officials say they expect full containment on wine country wildfires by tomorrow. the atlas fire is 83% contained, the tubbs fire 91% contained,

the nuns fire is 80% contained, the red wood fire 75% contained and the pocket fire 63% contained. all good numbers. now, as the fires still burn in the north bay santa rosa's mayor says plans are beginning to shape the massive recovery efforts. as you can see the destruction across that area. >> there's people who lost their lives down there. there's people who lost everything but their lives. >> and he says that he's already taking steps to help with the city as it rebuilds. >> dealing with toxics first, dealing with recycle -- recyclables second and then excavating out the ash to a certain depth. >> and the mayor says rebuilding 3,000 housing units lost in the fire may provide an opportunity for improvement. under consideration, plans for better energy efficiency, better cable and broadband

infrastructure, solar panels and rooftops and possibly increasing neighborhood density. some crews who spent time in the north bay are now in the santa cruz mountains. the bear fire continues to burn, though some people did get to go back home. nbc bay area's sergio quintana has their story. >> reporter: ambulances are on stand by as crews continue to fight the bear fire. todd and denise live nearby. she shot she is pictures monday night as they left in a rush. >> it was just huge, the fire was huge and she screamed, oh, my god, there is the fire. >> reporter: they are still evacuating but came to ask if they could turn off their solar power system. >> if we can do some good by going in and turning that off we want to do that. >> reporter: some of their neighbors' homes were burned down, they just got word that their home survived the fire. not knowing anything has been the worst part of the last couple of days. >> you just have to sit and be with all of this, you know, and wait and wait and wait.

that's hard. >> reporter: there are crews from across the country here. we saw a truckload of elite hot shot firefighters from montana drive into the staging area, they had been helping with the north bay fires. >> progress that's being made up there is allowing these assets to become available to fight the fire here in the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: even with progress there is pearl. a department of corrections firefighter was burned and rushed to a local hospital. san francisco police bicycle officer is in critical condition this morning after he was struck by a hit and run driver. it happened a little after noon yesterday in the tenderloin on turk near van ness. police say officers were closing in on the suspect's car believing that he was armed and say he just took off and struck that officer in the process. police later found the vehicle empty near buena vista park, arrested the suspect nearby on ellis street about 3:30 and that's where a neighbor took this video of the arrest. >> it's sad, you know, because, i mean, they are out here to

save us, to help us and keep the peace and people are just reckless. >> sources tell our investigative unit that the suspect is named maurquise johnson. the officer remains in intensive care this morning and police say his family is now traveling from out of state to be by his side. 4:35. happening today a key deadline for cities nationwide. today is the final day for leaders to submit requests for proposals for amazon's second world headquarters. more than 100 cities around the country are openly saying that they are trying to win that bid. amazon says that it plans to invest more than $500 billion and hire 50,000 people. more details now, california's governor says that he will offer hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks to amazon if the company chooses the city in california. among the communities vying for the headquarters, san jose, san francisco and irvine. google's plan to expand into san jose appears to be taking another step forward.

5:25. tonight is the night. tonight is the night for the win. >> that's what we're hoping for. >> all right, coach. >> put me in, coach. >> great in terms of getting some much needed rain around the bay area. it is going to be nice, actually, you see those showers on the radar, it's been so long and we start out with some cloudy skies as you take a live look outside. on the left side of the screen we are looking live in the south bay and san jose, it's 56 degrees and 53 degrees now in the tri-valley, looking live in pleasanton, it's 50 degrees in the north bay and san francisco 54 degrees, 56 in the east bay. as you're getting ready to head out and starting there, looking at the closet like what to wear today, it's still cool to start out, so you need a jacket for the morning and maybe for the afternoon, too, it won't warm up that much as we go into the rest of day and for the rest time in

a long time you need to make sure you have the umbrella somewhere in the back seat of the car or just keeping it in hand, especially if you will be gone away from home all day long. so you just want to make sure you have it handy. now, the rain is still well to the north of us moving out of washington and into oregon right now, you can see the rain, and it still has a ways to go before it starts to work into the bay area, but as we look at the timeline, by noon we could start to see some spotty light showers in parts of the north bay, still mostly cloudy and the winds blowing in on shore, but the heaviest rain doesn't arrive until later on tonight. 10:00 tonight we see pockets of heavy rain in the north bay, some spotty light showers out ahead of that and then for late tonight into early tomorrow morning it approaches the east bay, the peninsula and the south bay and then it clears out quickly by tomorrow morning, the rest of the day tomorrow looks pretty dry. so during the overnight hours we are looking at the possibility of getting maybe over a quarter

of an inch of rain in santa rosa and a quarter of an inch of rain, in hayward .2 of an inch and lesser amounts as you head into the south bay. it would be nice to get a tenth of an inch but i don't think we will even get that much. we are also looking at snow in the sierra between tonight and tomorrow. as we go into saturday it starts to clear out. here we are with cooler temperatures in san francisco, some low 60s for the next several days and then it does start to warm up. look at tuesday, 78 degrees, inland areas are going to be in the upper 80s. not looking forward to that, but at least we can enjoy the cooler breezes and the higher humidity for now. mike, you are reporting a crash in castro valley. >> we weren't looking for this type of report but what we're looking at is the castro valley y. we are looking at eastbound 580,

around castro valley boulevard reports of that off ramp is being affected, sounds like a car hit a deer in the area. remember, this is the season where we will see the deer trying to cross the roadway, they are guided by they're looking for dates, no major issue for 580 itself, it's the off ramp at castro valley boulevard. travel times coming in through the castro valley boulevard area in the commute direction that would be westbound which moves smoothly, no problems here or at the maze. we will look at the bay bridge toll plaza, a quick look shows you a smooth flow of traffic but the cash lanes on either side of the fast track lanes one toll taker in each lane is shut down, overnight that tip clae happens. about 5:00 we should see any backup clearing for 20 minutes and then the metering lights turn on. looking at palo alto a smooth drive, easy flow of traffic south bay into san francisco, 101 moves this smoothly through the north bay. good morning, i'm landon dowdy.

here are today's top business headlines. wall street could take a pause after stocks closed at record highs yesterday. the dow ending above 23,000 for the first time ever, helped by ibm which had its best day since 2009. you want to look for data today on unemployment and manufacturing, we also get earnings from verizon. the dow rising 160 points to 23,157, the nasdaq up half a point to 6624. blue apron is laying off hundreds of workers or 6% of its staff as part of a realignment of personnel. it was one of the most anticipated ipos of the year, but the stock has struggled since, losingkto half of its v. the mail kit delivery service is facing tough competition from hello fresh and plated as well as amazon which bought whole foods earlier this year. and retailers are in for a treat this al wean with americans expected to spend more on costumes, candy and decorations than ever before. the national retail federation estimates that spending will hit

the dash. >> the two cars that scored the lowest were the volkswagen pa sat and chevy malibu. nbc's consumer division did not receive a response from those car makers. san francisco city attorney is filing a lawsuit against pg&e in connection with a landslide that ended with the demolition of a luxury home. you may remember last year a home mysteriously started sliding off its foundation on casidas avenue. initially the investigation pinpointed -- initially this triggered that landslide. the investigation pinpointed a broken water main. the suit claims pg&e crews relocated a gas line causing that main to rupture. the city wants the utility to cover nearly a million dollars in damages to six homes. pg&e issued a statement saying right now its focus is on the north bay fires, but they are aware of the lawsuit. also new this morning uc berkeley police are investigating a violent laptop robbery which happened tuesday

afternoon at the crossroads student dining hall near people's park. police say two robbers took a laptop from a young woman, punched her in the face when she tried to fight back, those robbers ran into the park and the police never found them. continuing coverage now of the congressional probe into russia's interference in the 2016 election. google has briefed the house and senate intelligence committees. this morning we know that staff on both panels privately interviewed officials from google in recent weeks. the briefing comes ahead of two hearings on november 1st. google has declared a public confirmation that reports that it has discovered russian-linked ads on its platform like youtube and google search. former vice president joe biden will be in the bay area. he is speaking tonight in cupertino. the forum is part of the college's celebrity forum speaker series. his speech starts at 8:00 this evening at the flint center. also today former president barack obama hits the campaign

single-family homes and 19 rental units, construction begins next year. also new this morning, california will not be lowering its standard for lawyers. the state's supreme court says the required passing score for the bar exam which is the second highest in the nation will stay the same. the chronicle reports the court which oversees the state bar and 261,000 lawyers says the actual exam should be looked at to see if changes could be made to help more people pass. calls to lower the scores started growing after only 43% of the test takers passed last july. this is the lowest passing rate in 32 years. >> that was a stressful time for folks. east bay parents are concerned this morning that some students say that they have seen a flasher. police report that the flasher has been targeting students as they walk home from school. it's happening in san ramone. the latest incident happened on monday as a student was walking home from dougherty valley high school. a man asked the girl if he could
