mother nature giving some much-needed relief in the right now at 4:30, overnight rain. mother nature giving much needed relief in the north bay as crews put out wildfires. in the south bay, the mountains not left out as heavy rain fell over the bear fire that, at one point sent people running from their homes. this morning, we have crews on the ground across the burn zone. the rain having an impact on the roadway. thanks for joining us on this friday, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. let's start with kari hall. >> a lot of the rain has moved out of the bay area for now as we are starting to get clearing. as you head out, you can see the remnants of what we are seeing here on the radar.

we see the cluster of the rain moved to the east and now bringing snow to the see area. look to the north, farther to the north of us, spotty and light rain. we have a chance of seeing a few more lingering showers into the next hour or two. as we look at the hour-by-hour outlook, san jose at 5:30, there's a chance we will have ì%

settles. here is video from overnight and a tow truck crash on westbound 580 east in dublin. you can see the truck crashed through the fencing that separates the freeway and the bart rail. some of the cement from the center divide fell on to the track. that's what caused the closures. crews were cleaning up. make mentioned, it is not affecting bart service now. developing now, the rain helping fire crews making significant progress on the north bay wildfire. the latest containment numbers are these, we expect them to grow. the tubbs fire, 92%. atlas fire, 86%, the rest are more than 80%. happening today, kaiser

permanente will reopen. it has been nearly two weeks since the frightening scene we brought you live. the nurses rushing patients from the hospital. they evacuated 120 patients. luckily, those flames never reached the building. new this morning, a look at the destruction from the north bay wildfires. one man's home and vineyard destroyed by the flames. >> we have more from santa rosa. >> reporter: the life span of an oak tree can stretch several hundred years, it's true of this oak, it's not of the vineyard that ignited sunday night. >> after 1:00, we were running for our lives. our house, our two large barns, small barn, other outbuildings were completely incinerated behind us. >> reporter: he made an effort to beat back the flames. as you can tell from the remains of the barn, his home and

damaged vines, the effort proved fruitless. >> i went to stamp out grass fires, then went to protect the north side of the little barn. then, there was no more protecting to do, right. i had made every effort i could. i lost the battle. >> reporter: next, the war began. his wife, melissa, managed to get two cars prepared and running as he fled the fire. >> as we went down the road, the fire was racing across the vineyard. we were going through fire going out. >> reporter: unscorched earth, reptiles and sheep did survive. his flock of 30 or so sheep were rescued and taken to the fairground. >> further south, thanks to mild conditions, the firefighters are getting an upper hand on the fire in santa cruz mountains near boulder creek.

last night, it was 40% contained. more than 300 acres burned and some evacuations lifted. a suspect accused of critically injuring a san francisco police officer is expected in court. >> there are encouraging signs the officer's condition is starting to improve. the police chief, bill scott says the 32-year-old officer is still in critical condition. but, he should eventually recover from his injuries. friends say he attends law school, drums in a band and teachs martial arts. >> always willing to show techniques or give knowledge or spar with them and generally, like a cool person to have on the mat. >> he was patrolling on a bike wednesday when the suspect ran him over while trying to leave a crime scene. johnson will answer to attempted murder along with other charges. last night's rain, a quick reminder of the floods.

leaders are trying to get ahead of the curve when it comes to being prepared for winter's worse. no one wants a repeat of last winter when coyote creek flooded. the water district is equipped with online tools to better gauge flood levels. >> what we are here to show them is the development of the flood watch website to describe what level the creek is. our engineers and the city team have worked together to develop specific thresholds that require response. >> that website is being shown during flood preparation meetings. happening today, we could get an update on the effort to keep the raiders from moving to las vegas. the oakland coliseum authority board meets today. last month, coliseum officials said the team was likely to play in oakland through the year, 2020. this morning, the raiders

good morning, i'm landon dowdy live at cnbc global headquarters. wall street in positive territory. the senate passed a budget blueprint that could pave the way to move ahead on tax cuts. the markets overcame early ending slightly higher. look for existing home sales. the dow opening to 23,163, a record high. the nasdaq fell 19 to 6605. facebook will start testing subscriptions over the next several weeks for an article feature on android devices.

from on board planes during international flights. overnight, we looked through a document filed by the federal aviation administration with the united nations. tests show a laptop's lithium-ion battery can overheat and cause a fire. they are calling for the ban on domestic flights. the u.s. banned laptops in the cabins of planes from ten middle eastern airports for security reasons. coming up on "today in the bay," the rain came and went. >> the roads are wet as you head out this morning, watching for the puddles. as we take a live look outside z, it is clearing in san jose and a look at the temperature for willow glen staying cool. we should be up to 74. we are going to stay in the low 60s today. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend, next. we are looking at power loss. ooh, yeah, this is friday. lighter than typical.

on with showing most of the bay area getting .25 inch to .10 inch. the bulk moved to the east. you can see there, there's the snow around lake tahoe. we are also watching another little cluster of light rain that may move into the north bay within the next several hours. don't expect as much rain. we are measuring light amounts. this is what we normally get through the month of october. we are nowhere close to this and could use more rain. santa rosa gets 1.6 inches of rain and in oakland, a little over an inch. .75 is normal for san jose. we only got .10. looking at mid-50s as you head out the door and seeing the wet roads around the bay area. it is going to be a cool day, up to 67 degrees in san jose. for the east bay, upper 60s today. with those breezy winds, it will

feel cooler. oakland, expect a high of 62 degrees with mid-60s for the peninsula. san mateo, 66 degrees there. 62 in the mission and the north bay, highs in the upper 60s. navato, santa rosa, 65 degrees. as you get dressed, you have to wear something nice and warm. keep on the jacket all day long. ladies, permission to break out the boots because we will have those temperatures that will stay on the cooler side. you don't want something that will get wet and messy. the temperatures today, reaching into the low 60s in san francisco. warming up for next week, upper 70s by tuesday. it will feel more like summer, especially for the inland valleys. going back to summer, guys. enjoy the 60s. the san mateo bridge, how does it look? >> it looks fine from this shot. we are looking at eastbound traffic and flowing fine. around the high-rise, eastbound we have a car addressing a flat

tire. that's one lane blocked. be careful heading to the hayward side. we'll look at the map. it's not affecting the sensors. a note, it is leaving foster city across the hayward side. the dumbarton bridge is clear. everything is looking good. slick o slicker roadways because of the rain overnight. grease and oil will rise to the top of the ramps. all the transitions heading to the bay bridge is a nice, easy drive. all the rails, after the early morning crash near the dublin station, bart is open and running on time. back to you, kris. >> a quick recovery. thank you, mike. after some of the most intense fire fights of their lives, bay area firefighters are finally starting to come back home from the front lines of the north bay wildfires. we were there yesterday when members of the san francisco fire department strike team

arrived at their fire station. during the first days of their fire, the group worked nearly 100 hours straight, sleeping outside at times. we talked with the strike team leader who called it exhausting and emotional experience. >> unbelievable event with a lot of destruction and we feel that, we thought in the last few days as we were running into people who lost their homes and thanking us. we don't need the thanks, we are doing our job. they are going through a significant change in their life. it's emotional, very emotional. >> san francisco's fire department sent 60 firefighters to the north bay and join thousands of firefighters assisting from more than 300 agencies not only in california, but across the nation and around the world. when it seemed like justin herman's name change was a done

deal, there's a slight problem. a technicality when the recs and park commissioners voted to remove the name, it was narrowly approved bay 4-3 vote. one of the commissioners was not there for the vote. chaos ensued because the city attorney's office moved to invalidate the vote. that means justin herman plaza will remain for now until another vote next month. investigators are revealing few details about a sexual assault case involving students at two east bay high schools. a student told a counselor she was assaulted. that is an all girl's catholic school in concord. she says it happened last month off campus. police say one of the suspects is a student at the all boys de la salle high school across the street. right now, two students are in custody. alameda jail inmates are

reviewing the hunger strike that starts sunday. inmates want the jail to get rid of classification that places them in different levels of housing and end to solitary confinement. they held a four-day hunger strike and demands were met by officials. you can expect to see fewer dogs on leashing at golden gate and other bay area parks. the park service is dropping the fight to require leashes for dogs. the park service says keeping dogs on leashes would protect wildlife and keep people safer. dog owners fought back and filed a lawsuit. coming up next, we investigate how the state failed the trauma supervised clean drinking water to every resident. the driver of a big rig involved in a tour bus crash that killed people in palm springs is finally being

treatment systems to clean up this water around the state. we also found that even when the state pays for the facilities, many poor communities simply can't afford to maintain and run those facilities. they are just sitting there empty and idle. take, for instance, the community of lanare in east fresno county. they had a water treatment plant built 12 years ago. it's moth balled because local water customers don't have the money to run it. meantime, residents can't drink the water because it has the highest levels of arsenic in it in the state. we found 1 million people living throughout california with drinking water that officials say is unsafe to drink. we went to sacramento to confront state leaders and what they are going to do about it. see their answers and the full report online or later tonight at 6:00. i i nbc bay area news.

showing where the rain is headed next. >> this friday morning, october 20th. good morning. thanks for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. the rain is a welcome sight, but makes for tough driving. >> it is moving out of here, so the conditions will be improving. it is nice to get the rain during the overnight hours as most people are not out there to deal with it. into the weekend, much more dry conditions. this looks good now as we still see the sheen of the wet roads as we look at the golden gate bridge. the rain moved on. there's a slight chance we could see spotty, light rain as we look to the north of us. there's still lingering rain as another disturbance moves through, but mostly passes to the north. we'll talk about the rain and the north bay wildfires. that's coming up. mike is checking in at the bay bridge. >> flashing lights. travel through the area, no incidents to
