"today in the bay" continues right now. thanks for joining us on this friday morning, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we can say friday, indeed. we have been waiting for this friday to come. >> it's been a long couple weeks. part was the wildfire danger. the rain is going to help. >> yes, it is helping this morning, hopefully. we are going to see improved air quality around the bay area. looking forward to a nicer weekend. here is a look ott how much rain we had around the wildfires in the north bay. generally about a tenth to a quarter inch. san francisco had a little less than a tenth inch for most of the city. the peninsula had rainfall totals anywhere from .3 inch rain to a few one-hundredths inch closer to the bay. the south bay, near the bear

fire, measuring a tenth to quarter inch. we'll look atmore rainfall totals and more of what's ahead coming up. friday light may be wet on the roads. >> i got reports of oakland and 880, a big puddle at the end of the off ramp. be careful and watch the slick conditions. kris talked about a bart crash affecting the tracks. there are no delays, i just want to get that out there. tough see the video kris has coming up. toward the bay bridge, 17 minutes from highway 4 to the toll plaza. 17, 16, 15. that's descending order through oakland. back to you. >> thank you, mike. happening now, overnight, rain helping firefighters douse those final flames in the north bay wildfires. you can see this video into our news room of the rain falling. the latest numbers of the fires

are improving. the tubbs fire, 92% contained. t the atlas fire, 86 contained. santa rosa residents will be allowed back into their neighborhoods later this morning, but with restrictions. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in the coffey park neighborhood which was hit very hard by the wildfires. pete, explain how officials are organizing this to make sure those residents stay safe. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you marcus and kris. we are east of the coffey park neighborhood. as you mentioned, one of the hardest hit areas from the wildfires. we have cones on hopper avenue. those residents are going to be able to go back to the neighborhood in a matter of hours. i want to show you important information for the residents as far as what they will need to get in. you have to be a resident to get in and need an entry pass. you will get that by providing a

drivers license, state id, passport or utility bill and valid photo id. the three neighborhoods that will be reopened or they are going to be able to re-enter are orchard park, journey's end and coffey park. tomorrow, the mobile homes will be released to the property owners in a controlled entry area only for the residents. sunday, coffey park is open for public. folks are going to drive up here in the cones we showed you at the top of the report. they are driving in getting ready go back to the neighborhood. a lot of homes have been burned to the ground. it should be a busy and emotional day for them. they will be able to re-enter coffey park at 10:00 a.m. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> remember, you can download the nbc bay area app smartphone app. you can send those push alerts

we'll give you information very quickly, even as the rain approaches. new this morning, video of an overnight tow truck crash in dublin. you can see the truck crash through the fencing that separates the freeway and the bart rail line. some of the cement from the center divide fell on the tracks and caused a bart station closure as crews were cleaning up there. right now, bart service is not affected because they managed to clean it up. there was no damage to the rail. trains are running smoothly through dublin. san leandro police are questioning two men in connection to a deadly carjacking. 46-year-old james figueroa was killed yesterday in front of his home. he was run over by his own pick-up truck by a carjacker. last night, when officers were back on the crime scene, they spotted a car that was seen during his killing. that led to a pursuit and officers were able to arrest two men in the car. they tell us the suspects are in

custody for the pursuit, not his murder. happening today in san jose, a murder case of a beloved south bay woman goes back to court. you might remember miss flow, as known by her neighbors was beaten to death during home robbery. the 88-year-old was a pillar of her east san jose community. two men, including the 19-year-old neighbor face murder charges. the other three suspects were arrested in connection with the crime. this time, all five suspects are expected to enter pleas. 6:06. the the coast guard may resume searching for a man who went missing in ocean beach. the search started yesterday afternoon after the fire department says they received a report of a man needing help. right now, 6:06. we wake up to some wet roads and looking at how much rain we had in the east bay and berkeley, you had a little under .10 inch of rain there. antioch, a little more than .10

inch. tri-valley, presenton, .18. fremont, a .4. that was the most for the east bay. the rain moved off toward the east. still, tracking some spotty light showers to the north of us that may move to northern sonoma county. as we get a closer look, light rain over the south bay. that also clearing out. so, just watching out for a little lingering rain. for the most part, we are drying out. how does that make for the roads and the commute this morning? mike? >> so far, it's friday light. an easier, light drive. slicker roadways. the slick rain gives extra warning. watch the off ramps. so far, no major problems reported. a new crash at 101. sounds like it is off the freeway. i'll let you know if it's a bigger problem. no problem for the dublin interchange. south 880 through hayward, the same pattern, but it's friday,

it's 6:11 on this friday morning. we walk out the door and it's wet across the bay area. a live look in san jose. the streets may be still a little slick. let's go to evergreen. the normal high temperature on this day is about 74 degrees. we'll stay about ten degrees below that. a few clouds in the mix to start. a lot of sunshine today with breezy winds. we'll take a look at a warmer weekend that's coming up in five minutes. a live look outside livermore and west 580. smoothly from the camera shot. a disabled vehicle trying to get to the shoulder.

no change to the top number. an easy drive-through the tri-valley. 6:11. new this morning, a closer look at the losses from the fire. $1 billion is an early estimate according to california's insurance commissioner. much of that loss was in sonoma county where 5,000 homes and buildings were destroyed. these are very early numbers. the commissioner expects it to rise. we are learning this morning, the last two pro to types for the border wall are going up in san diego. six are upstanding side by side. companies have until october 26 to finish their model. no word, yet, on when the final model will be selected nor who will pay for it. you will remember, president trump promised mexico will pay for the wall. they say that will not happen. chariot will not run in san francisco.

>> they temporarily shut the company down. a surprising reason why. >> good morning. they run the private buses that anyone can ride for a few dollars more than muni. they say they are quicker and get you where you need to go because you don't have to follow a long bus route. they were shut down by the public utilities commission over what they say is safety concerns about these vehicles. that's extremely unexpected because chariot uses ford vans exclusively. ford makes the vehicle that is the state says are unsafe. we'll continue to investigate. other news, senator john mccain introduced a bill to require social networks and other internet entities to disclose who is paying for political ads on their site, the same way tv and radio ads have to disclose. this comes after facebook and google and twitter have been examining how they were taken

advantage of by russians. silicon valley has long been able to avoid this regulation. you can make the argument, it's the reason silicon valley has been so successful, the government stayed out of the way. this controversy could be the thing that opens up the door to far more oversight from washington. executives know that. sheryl sandburg went to washington to lobby for facebook and publicly said she wants the senate intelligence committee to release those ads they are investigating so the public can see them. the intelligence committee says it's fine if facebook releases the ads. here are the senators in charge. >> clearly, if any of the social media platforms would like to do that, we are fine with them doing it because we have already got scheduled an open hearing because we believe the american people deserve to hear firsthand. >> the american people do deserve to hear firsthand.

the dodgers. he has a freezer of dodger dogs. what is that? we would argue it's not just a hot dog. okay, we are experiencing a soggy, cool morning. we had the rain that moved through overnight. most is out of here. you can see the roads are wet as we take a live look outside the golden gate bridge. you can see with the light shining there in the headlights. you can tell there may be lingering puddles. watch out for that as you go out for work or school this morning. the rain moved to the east. even the snow is winding down. if you are going through for the weekend, heads up there may be chain controls up, still, even as we see the snow moving out. light rain with a weak disturbance moving in. this could bring spotty, light, addition additional rainshowers for the day. i want to show you how it plays out on the hour-by-hour outlook.

dry at 9:00 and clouds rolling by. a few of the clouds may drop a little rain early afternoon and after that, we are all dry across the bay area. it is cold this morning. santa rosa dropping to the low 40s. fairfield, 50. livermore, 51 degrees and 55 in san jose and san francisco, which is about a few degrees cooler than yesterday at this time. nothing major, though. this afternoon, it will feel much cooler than it did yesterday throughout the day with the highs only reaching 68 degrees in antioch. palo alto, 67. 67 in san jose and the north bay reaching into the mid-60s. as you head out for the morning commute in the east bay, lower 50s. you may have that hot coffee in the cup holder and the heat on to keep you warm with low 50s and a few clouds. we are just advising that you allow extra time to get where you are going because that oil may rise to the streets. we haven't had a rain in quite a while.

once again for the sierra, a live look at squaw creek in lake tahoe. 33 degrees as the snow wraps up. there may be four to five inches of snow in the higher elevations. it may be very slippery going in that direction. something beautiful to see before it melts. here in san francisco, we are 60 degrees today. you can see the warming trend will be under way as we go into each day. by tuesday, we reach the peak of the warmth, up to 79 degrees and 67 today for the inland valleys. upper 70s sunday. upper 80s by tuesday. looks like it stays warm throughout most of next week. cranking the air conditioners back up. mike has an update to a crash in sun sunnyvail. >> air conditioners next week. california. over here, we are looking at a nice, easy drive. sluggish traffic later on today. right now, the update for

sunnyvale. it's not affecting the freeway. that's why we didn't see slowing. we are looking toward the tri-valley and east bay. the indicators anything other than green, i will talk about that in a second. the approach to the bay bridge moves well. the back up here at the bay bridge toll plaza for friday light. i look here north of the bay bridge, this is the richland bay bridge. looking here at puddles. the sheen on the roadway, so slicker conditions in spots until the sun drys everything out, which is not the case, obviously. looking at waze, a smooth drive, dublin to -- we are looking at a smooth flow of traffic through the slower zone. hayward, five minutes longer, not a big deal through castro valley. the bridges move well. just starting to see more traffic flow and seeing more folks on nbc bay area wazers.

you can compare it against the insurance adjusters claim and negotiate. it is your right under california law. call us or go online to www.nbcbayarea.com/responds. 5:24. after the most intense work of their lives, you can see firefighters in the bay area are starting to return from home from the front lines to their homes of the north bay wildfires. we were there yesterday when members of the san francisco fire department strike team were actually able to return home. these are the first days they were actually fighting that fire for 100 hours straight. some sleeping outside at times. we spoke with the strike team leader who called it emotional. >> a lot of destruction and we feel that, we felt in the last two days especially, running into people who lost their homes and thanking us.

we are doing our job. they are going through a significant change in their lives. emotional, very emotional. >> san francisco fire department dispatched 65 fighters to the north bay. they joined, literally thousands of firefighters assisting for more than 300 agencies across the nation and the world. 6:25. this morning, parents, this story is for you. smart watches for kids can be putting nem in danger. consumer groups are asking the federal trade commission to investigate these products. the groups say the research shows hackers can access the watches and then track your children. susan grant with the consumer federation of america. >> a stranger, someone you don't know could be using the watch to follow your kid around, to communicate with your kid. >> three smart watch makers that sell in the u.s. and were tested

and vulnerable to hacking are teeny tell, care app and se tracker. teeny tell says the product is secure. the other two companies have not responded to the allegation. this morning, research for california saying teens don't get enough sleep. researchers just put out that study. they compared the sleep patterns of adolescents and found 40% of today's teens sleep less than seven hours a night. researchers suggest smartphones may be to blame. the more teens spent online, the less sleep they got. limiting smartphone usage to two hour as day gives enough time for proper sleep. coming up next on "today in the bay," overnight rainmaking for a slick commute. the impact it could have on your morning drive. the overnight rain gives firefighters in the south bay a boost. the time line for full

across the zones. >> this morning, thanks for joining us. it is friday morning, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to look at the weather. kari, you have been tracking it all. >> we are looking at all the rain we had in the north bay and the areas where we had the wildfires. most measured a quarter inch of rain. this doesn't show all the burn scar areas, but giving a general idea we had a tenth to close to half inch of rain. as we look at the south bay, still tracking the bear fire and a tenth inch of rain here and san jose, also a tenth inch of rain. more for morgan hill and gilroy. the rain moved off to the east. there may be spotty, lingering showers. for the most part, we are about to dry out. we'll talk about the weekend ahead in seven minutes. mike has a problem for 580.

kris. yes, the weather has been cooperative for firefighters in the santa cruz mountains especially the past 24 hours. yesterday, cooler temps. you can see the slick road behind me. we had a good dousing of rain last night. cal fire tells us the bear fire is 35% containment, has burned 320 acres and they expect full containment, 100% perimeter around the fire by tuesday. now, as you mentioned, some areas remain evacuated. however, other neighborhoods have been reopened. yesterday, residents off skyline boulevard and areas south of bear creek road were allowed to go back home. those living along bear creek canyon road, deer creek road, rons and dons road are still under evacuation orders. the bears fire has been dangerous for firefighters because of the steep terrain. seven firefighters have been hurt, including andy goodson

with the santa clara unit. this is a picture cal fire posted on facebook. he is being treated in icu for injuries sustained. he's expected to be okay. the six other firefighters hurt were treated and released the same day as their injuries. live in the santa cruz mountains, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. we are always tracking the weather, even when you are not, even when we are not on air. follow meteorologist kari hall on twitter. happening today, kaiser permanente will rep opereopen. nurses and doctors rushing patients from the hospital when the flames were erupted behind them. they evacuated 120 patients. fortunately, the flames never reached the building. hospital officials look forward to reopening and continuing to

serve their community. a story that would probably be too much to bear for some people. surviving the recent massacre in las vegas, only to then lose your home in the north bay fire storm. >> that's exactly what happened to one santa rosa woman. she is sharing her experience. she was right outside the route 91 concert venue when the massacre began, not knowing where the fun fire was coming from. she ran for her life down the strip. after returning home, she had a frantically evacuate when the fire storm burned toward her home 11 days ago. she talks about dealing with the heart breaking chain of events. >> okay. that has to stop. that's all i kept thinking. there has to be an end to this. where is the end? >> she says she always tries to look for the positive. she is thankful she and her family managed to escape the fire unharmed. happening today, the hit and run person who critically

injured a san francisco police officer is expected in court. meanwhile, encouraging signs this morning the officer's condition is starting to improve. san francisco police chief, bill scott says the 32-year-old officer is in critical condition but he should eventually recover from injuries. friends say he goes to law school, drums in a band and teaches marshall art. >> always willing to show people new techniques or knowledge or spar with them and generally, just a cool person to have tan mat. >> he was patrolling on a bike in tenderloin when a suspect ran him over while trying to flee a crime scene. johnson will answer to attempted murder charges along with other charges. 6:35. this morning, investigators are still releasing few details about a sexual assault case involving students at two east bay high schools. a student told a counselor she

was assaulted. that's an all-girl catholic school in concord. she says it happened last month off campus. the other is a student at de la salle all boys school. when it seems like the justin herman plaza name change is a deal, there's a twist. it will remain her man plaza because of a technicality. when they voted to remove the name, they believe it was narrowly approved bay 4-3 vote. one of the commissioners who approved it wasn't there for the vote. chaos ensued. that's because the city attorney's office moved to invalidate the vote. that means the name will remain, at least for now. there is another vote scheduled at next month's meeting. listen up oakland fans. the raiders fans, happening today, we could get an update on the effort to keep the raiders

from moving to las vegas. the oakland alameda county board meets today. last month, officials said the team was likely to play in oakland through the year 2020. all right. we are looking here toward the san mateo bridge. you are likely to be there longer. westbound 92 over the bridge. le's take you to the map. i think i have those in the rundown as well. oh, there we go. we are looking at palo alto as well. 101 moves smoothly. a cup slow spots as we come back to the desk. mild slowing coming down 880 past hayward and union city. that san mateo congestion is off the nimitz freeway. >> that means the weekend is upon us. >> friday. >> the forecast, kari? >> it looks so much better as far as the air quality and temperatures. it's going to be cooler. let's look at the overall

forecast where the coast is 64 degrees, 71 at the bay. inland areas are going to be in the mid-70s. 85 degrees inlands on sunday. it is going to be warmer. 78 for the bay and the coast at 67 degrees. maybe you are going out to some of the pumpkin farms. in half-moon bay, nice and cool, starting out in the morning at 53 degrees, then seeing those temperatures staying in the upper 50s. i know the kids love to wear their costumes. cool weather for that. you will want to make sure you are wearing a warm sweater. mike tells me about this, a fremont run for education at core quarry lakes regional park. cool in the morning with a lot of sunshine. 9:00, 60 degrees, then slowly rising from there. for napa valley, we are saying get back to napa valley. spend your money, go to the restaurants and the vineyards,

wildfires continue to burn in the area, but rain moves in overnight. the controversy over condolence calls continues this morning after a late night tweet from the president. >> we are following the stock market right now. as you can see, the dow is up 44 points. the dow raises 40 points, opens record highs. it is now 6:40. you are watching "today in the bay."

the rain moved out. as we approach 6:43, 40 minutes from sunrise. we can see the clouds overhead after the early morning rain. let's check out los gatos' temperature trend today. normally, mid-70s. today, we stay in the lower 60s. breezy winds and at times clouds mixing in. a much warmer weekend ahead. we look at the rain ahead. we are looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. i showed you the back up there. it's lighter monday through thursday. you can see the movement for the fast track lanes. that's movement you see. we'll show you what else, coming up. 6:43. happening now, the bay area on the move this friday morning after a night after rain, as kari mentioned. live pictures in oakland, richmond, palo alto and san mateo. as mike has been saying, plenty of slick roads out there.

be careful. a look at this video from overnight in santa rosa. what a welcome sight. you can see it coming down. firefighters have been waiting for this since the fires started a week ago. all the rain helping to contain the fires burning there. "today in the bay," pete suratos is live in santa rosa where, pete, it looks like there's no more rain falling, but certainly a relief. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, kris. the rain coming down is going to help as far as containing the fires. they are close to containment. where we are standing, we are not far from the coffey park neighborhood, a neighborhood really affected by the wildfires. here on hopper drive, there's a lot of cones down behind me. that's because folks are going to be able to re-enter that neighborhood, of course, if you are a resident. that's one of three communities, that includes journey's end and orchard park. here is information if you are watching this, what you need to re-enter the neighborhoods.

sierra. there is an inch of snow this morning in kingvail. some places are expected to get eight inches of snow. drivers are required to have chains if you plan to travel over the summit on interstate 80. mike says not south lake. >> make sure the chains fit your tires. >> right. >> you learned the hard way. >> those roads are so slippery when you get just a little snow. it's nice to see it nonetheless. we are heading into the weekends. while they have the snow, we had rain in the bay area. look at how much we have measured in parts of the north bay. around the wildfires, a quarter inch of rain and mill valley was .4 inch. as i move to san francisco, most locations around the city were below a tenth inch of rain and the peninsula had anywhere from a tenth inch rain to up to .3

bay area app to track the rain in your area. the morning commute could have been a nightmare. westbound 580 east of oak yard. it happened around 1:00. debris fell on the track. it was all cleaned up by the time bart started service this morning. police questioning two men in connection with a deadly carjacking. police say 46-year-old james figueroa was filled yesterday morning in front of his own house. he was run over by his own pick-up truck by a carjacker. last night, when officers were back at the crime scene, they spotted the car seen during his killing. that led to a pursuit. officers were able to arrest two men in that car. police tell us, right now, they are in custody for the pursuit, but not for figueroa's murder. live to the nation's capitol, consumed by president
