a very good monday morning to you. let's take a peek outside overlooking san francisco. very nice start to our monday morning. things are still hanging on. the heat, i should say, is hanging on. good morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. laura had it right, i'm nervous. >> don't be nervous. we have had this in waves throughout the summer. we are getting used to it, right? it's going to be another day where our temperatures go way up, relatively quickly around the bay area. look at these high temperatures. gilroy, 90 degrees today. for the east bay, the tri-valley, also looking at the inland areas reaching the upper

80s, low 90s. as we head through the peninsula, mid-80s in san francisco to 82 in the mission district. north bay, 91 degrees today in santa rosa. we are back to summer for a while. we'll talk about how long that sticks around coming up. mike starts out with activity in the peninsula. >> the big shot as we expect this time of day, very easy as far as the sensor read goes. lanes have reopened in both directions. we are going talk about what happened in a second. i want to let folks know, we have a smooth drive toward the bay bridge. a traditional check with traditional travel times to the bay bridge toll plaza. for more on what caused the closure, back to marcus. >> thanks, mike. we are following the breaking news this morning in san bruno. a freeway shooting injured an uber driver. this happened before midnight on westbound 380 near elcamino

real. the uber driver was shot in the neck. the two passengers were not injured. they shot out the window. police say people in that car are being treated. kris sanchez will have a live report on the details at the top of the hour. the trial begins for the man accused of killing kate steinle. the case against jose gar zee ya. anser hassan has a look at how we got to this point. >> reporter: emotions will be high in the murder trial of kate steilee. >> it's going to be the victims family that wanlts justice and are stilooking at how this happened. >> reporter: he was deported five times. the pleasanton woman was used by

the trump campaign. >> talking about crime. you saw what happened with the young lady in san francisco. >> reporter: the defense team is likely to argue the shooting was an accident and evidence the bullet ricocheted before killing her. >> they do not negate a second degree murder. defense is going to have a hard time. >> reporter: an issue is the weapon. he says he found the weapon at a nearby bench. defense lawyers will say the gun has a history of misfiring. the prosecution could argue, so what? >> regardless of whether the gun was stolen, it was fired. >> the prosecution cannot prove premeditation. >> they have to show his conduct caused that harm. that is going to be somewhat difficult with the evidence we have heard so far. >> reporter: anser hassan, "today in the bay." >> we will cover every update from the trial on air and the

team will post updates at www.nbcbayarea.com and on facebook and twitter feeds. you can download the nbc bay area app. we'll send notifications. happening today, the largest coordinated clean up effort ever in california begins. you can see all the debris left over. this is the removal from the north bay fire storm. they are calling it the state's largest ever fire clean up. it will take months to complete. the first phase will happen with households, the hazardous waste, propane tanks, burned out cars. leaders will hold a news conference to explain what residents can expect over the next coming months. new details, now. we are learning more about a possible concert fund-raiser to help victims of the fires. tech leaders are working with the giants and the entertainment company to put on a show at at&t

expected to be lifted later this morning, where the bear wildfire has been burning since early last week. it destroyed four structures and nearly 400 acres. firefighters say it is about 80% contained. 4:36. all new this morning, tesla reached a deal to build a factory in china. that's the word from "the wall street journal." the paper reports the company made arrangements with a local government in shanghai. they will build a plan in the free trade zone. tesla will own the factory, making this the first of its kind deal for the foreign automaker in china. tesla confirmed they were in talks to build a factory in shanghai. cnbc reached out to the company for comment, but has not heard back. coming up on "today in the bay," check out google. the changes being made to make it easier to pay mgts. ready for the holidays? the discount target is offering.

closing at record highs as investors reacted to the senate passing a budget blueprint po pave the way for possible tax cuts, housing, gdp and the busiest week of earnings season with more than 170 companies set to report. the dow rose to 23,328 and nasdaq gaining 23 to 6629. google wants to make it easier to pay with google. use the preferred card you use for google play, youtube, chrome or android pay. it has a security code. no reason to enter multiple lines of payment information. it can be used on door dash, airbnb and stub hub. target is gearing up for the holidays. free shipping starting next month. most of the holiday items are

>> taking a live look this morning in san francisco. a warm one out there today. also, the first day all napa county schools will be open for students. again, a hot day there in san francisco. >> what's going on, kari? summer is hanging on. >> it is going to come back in full force. not just a warm day ahead, but warm days. >> oh. >> for, i think the whole week. let's talk about that. we have only had a little bit of rain so far. looking back on how much we get during the month of october, well, here is how much we have measured in santa rosa. almost .25 inch.

s san francisco had a bit more. san francisco, normally has at least a half inch of rain. so, we are measuring well below where we should be. compare that to last year, where we had a lot of rain starting out last year early in the season. so, we are on some much different terms this year. as we look at what you are feel thg monday morning, mostly mid to upper 50s. we will see those temperatures warming up very quickly today. so, yesterday, we had highs in the 70s for much of the inland areas. today, it's going to be at least -- at least 10-15 degrees hotter. 91 degrees today in santa rosa, not good for the fire danger and in livermore, up to 90 degrees today. starting to see those low 90s, as you get dressed, you need a jacket. it is a cool start.

maybe short sleeves under that because it will be much hotter this afternoon once you take that jacket off. you will want something to keep you nice and cool. a wide range in temperatures as you go through the day. sunglasses a necessity because of all the sunshine. if you go to half-moon bay to find the natural air-conditioning, you will get it. temperatures in the upper 50s to start. as you go through the day, mid-70s by noon. 80 degrees in san francisco. 85 degrees for tomorrow. that is going to be the warmest day of the week. then, we are looking at 70s for san francisco while the inland areas will see the heat hanging on a little longer. even on friday, we are well above average. we should be in the mid-70s. we'll talk more about that. mike is talking about something now in the tri-valley. >> i saw red sensors pop up here and the entire bay showing green. we are looking over here. there was a crash.

a brief time, both directions of 680 had slowing. looked like there was a traffic break. you can see across the center median. somebody distracted by the crash pushed over to the right shoulder. should be there by the time you are leaving the house if you are seeing the report. southbound 680 shows slower spots to mission north and mission south. construction continues in that area and picking upright now because they are supposed to be cleared by 5:00. we'll show you how things are shaping up through dublin. no delays. westbound dealing with the headlights. eastbound, the counter commute. no problems here. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 4:48. a south bay woman is talking about the upcoming trial about the medical robotics company. now they are suing. sunnyva sunnyvale admits the robot is

subject to dozens of claims. they recently spoke with a south bay patient who does not plan to go ahead with the lawsuit. the devices are operated by joy stick and 3-d. it is an important option that is safe and effective and faster recovery. the machines have been used in millions of operations. 4:49. no word of arrest in a violent liquor store robbery. two armed robbers shot a clerk at the atlas liquor store in san pablo avenue. the victim's injuries are not considered life threatening. the robbers got away with an undetermined amount of cash. in livermore, a woman is recovering after police shot her. she drove her car straight toward the officers. it happened on airway boulevard north of the airport.

police ran the plates of a suspicious car and it came back stolen. officers ordered the woman to get out of the car, she hit the gas instead, moving toward them. officers fired. she is in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. a new uc survey says sudden oak death disease can spread. results from cal researchers 2017 sudden oak death blitz. 15% of trees are infected. on the eastern side, 36% of the tree samples were infected. in both cases, the percentages skyrocketed. recent cancellations from the wildfires are putting san francisco's biggest annual high school football game in jeopardy. the examiner reports the status of the turkey day football game remains uncertain. san francisco school leaders have to decide what to do about

temperatures 10-15 degrees hotter today than it was yesterday. take a look at san francisco, reaching 80 degrees today. it's going to be breezy and reaching the peak of the temperatures there, tomorrow. then, for the inland areas, the heat pretty much continues. yes, the hottest part of the day will be tomorrow. we will talk more about that and also what you can expect and how to prepare for this. as we head to mike, trouble spots in the tri-valley. >> we had slowing and construction. we'll zoom over here toward everything that is not green on the map. this is the slower zone southbound 680. the crash is on the shoulder, blocking the slow lane as folks come down and merging with the traffic out of pleasanton. that's highway 84. that's where the activity is blocking the slow lane. we had slowing as one crew clears for the morning. 680 and mission boule s
