right in the middle of the street in the peninsula, live at palo alto at 61 degrees there. san francisco, in the middle of the screen, 65. the north bay is at 51. let's check out those high temperatures. in the north bay, we are reaching the mid-90s. inland valleys, low to mid-90s there as well. we will talk about the records that may be in jeopardy, coming up in a few minutes. mike is tracking the crash. >> as the commute kicks in in earnest for the south bay, we look at the sensors. mostly green. that's a pleasant drive. 101 and 87 in the northbound direction. northbound 280, coming up toward 7th, that's one of the popular exits there. a crash on the shoulder. no slowing shows up on the sensors. we'll watch. there can be complications before they clear that. we'll watch the off ramps. the rest of the bay moves slow. no delays here. getting toward the bay bridge, a nice easy flow going through the

east bay. back to you. >> thank you, mike. first, a developing story. another scare in the sky and on ground at san francisco international airport. new this morning, the audio recording of the communication between air traffic controllers and pilots of the same airline that almost caused a disaster on the runway four months ago. >> bob redell has the new recordings as well as the last ditch effort of another on the runway. these are recordings you just got overnight, bob. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, laura and marcus. in those recordings, you can hear an sfo air traffic controller order an air canada crew to abort their landing. faa is investigating why those buy lots didn't heed the command and fail to heed the back up warning light. this happened sunday night before 9:30. faa says air canada flight 781 was clear to land on 28r here at

sfo. air traffic control became worried that a proceeding arrival might not clear the runway in time. as you are about to hear on the recording, air traffic control ordered air canada a number of times to go arnds. >> air canada 781, go around. air canada 781, go around. [ inaudible ] >> that's pretty evident. air canada, 781 -- >> reporter: the end was a little hard to decipher. it was the air canada pilots acknowledging they had a radio problem. the air canada flight landed safely. the faa says it turns out the proceeding flight cleared the runway in time. air traffic control shined a red flashing light to get the plane to abort the landing. air canada never heeded that

warning. we looked into the flight system. according to faa, air traffic control towers have guns to shine. flashing red indicates it is not safe to land. it is a signal that is rarely used according to an aviation expert. faa is investigating another air canada incident that took place in july. an aircraft nearly hit four other loaded passenger airliners on a taxiway that runs parallel to the landing runway. it came within 59 feet of the ground, according to preliminary faa investigative report and endangered the lives of more than 1,000 passengers. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we are going to continue to look into this incident at san francisco international. bob, thank you. on air and online, we are going to post new information we get on www.nbcbayarea.com. 6:04. happening today. it's day two in the murder trial

of the man accused of killing kate steinle. for hours jose garcia sat quietly in the courtroom showing little reaction to descriptions of how steinle died. this was back in july of 2015. steinle's mother cloesed her eyes, wiped away tears. the bullet that killed steinle ricocheted from 80 feet away. two sides arguing the case. >> he's not interested in admitting he was there. eventually he does and he talks. that's where he tells them what happened. what happened was an accident. >> today is about the steinle family and the invedable resolve they have shown through the process. we are going to do whatever we can to bring the family justice. >> her father, jim, gave tearful testimony. the defense declined to ask questions. palo alto school board

members will take the first step in bringing a new district leader on board. the previous superintendent abruptly resigned last month. the annoyancement followed public anger on how they dropped the ball on reports. board members will meet tonight to go over the application and interview process, including deciding on the search firm to identify and weed out potential candidates. state and federal officials say clean up from north bay wildfires will take months. in sonoma county, people return to charred homes and dig through the rubble. phase one will target removal of household hazard waste and debris. the army core of engineers spoke about the next step. >> army core of engineers contractors are behind them. on those properties where you have given us permission to eliminate all the ash, all the debris that is in your property. >> clean up is expected to be

completed early next year. neighbors say they have been told they will likely be able to start rebuilding by next spring. it is 6:06. new this morning, deadly shooting investigation is under way in antioch. a man was shot on west 10th street about 10:30 last night. police are not revealing much about the investigation. there's no word about the suspect. a lake county man is talking about staring down a barrel of a gun used by the suspects in a rampage that left two dead and four others injured. the violence unfolded yesterday in clear lake. authorities say surveillance video show 65-year-old alan ashmoor walking into the convenience store. two men died and a chp officer was shot and saved by his bullet-proof vest. he tells the manager at gunpoint. here is what the store owner had to say. >> top shelf.

kind of turned to look at him. turned toward me and just pointed the gun. >> the suspect eventually walked out the door. authorities arrest him later outside a winery further down the road. fortunately, without further incident. happening today, the search resumes for a missing boater. he was found adrift on monday. a fishing license on board identifies justin grier as the owner. grier was last heard from on sunday. they found his truck and a boat in the parking lot. we'll keep you posted with updates. we have been talking about those hot temperatures. kari, you have been tracking it all. >> we'll be tracking that as we go through the day, as we check out the napa forecast. it is going to start out nice and cool, upper 50s at 8:00. as you are walking to school and the bell rings and heading out to recess and starts to warm up,

then walking home from school, you will turn on the air-conditioning with the temperatures in the mid-80s. it doesn't stop there. concerned about the after school activities because, in parts of the north bay, looking at the football practice forecast, low 90s today by 3:00. the temperatures stay in the 90s for a couple hours before slowly cooling down. so, maybe a good idea to have practice inside today. we'll talk about cooler weather in the forecast. mike, you have the crash in san jose. how is it looking? >> clear, kari. a great note about football practice. outdoor activities, stay hydrated. right now, a nice, easy flow of traffic. as you are cruising to work, slowing down 680 and pleasanton and castro valley. the commute direction westbound or northbound getting toward 880 is moving smoothly, but slower. a crash and debris might be blocking the slow lane. be careful.

this afternoon. many high profile women came against weinstein with allegations. they launched a civil rights investigation into the weinstein company. weinstein denied allegations of nonconsensual sex. we are learning more details this morning about allegations against film maker james toback. they spoke to 38 women accusing him of harassment. since that article was published, 200 additional women reached out with their stories. new this morning, the dialogue of sexual harassment ramps up and rocked hollywood. lawmakers in california are talking about it and taking it on. the state senate is hiring two outside firms to investigate allegations of harassment and sexual assault. that comes in the wake of a se sent open letter crafted by 150 women, calling out legislatures

for what they say is a culture of sexual harassment and intimidation. legal consultants will review policies. happening today, san jose councilmembers will vote on a plan for the current ordinance on rent control. in january, the council rolled back the amount landlords are hike rent from 8% to 5%. councilmembers approved a set of renter protections. the meeting gets under way at 1:30 this afternoon. people in the bay area are having a hard time finding housing, but not findsing a job. >> scott mcgrew says we are at full employment. >> full employment. good morning. that's when the unemployment rate gets so low, mathematically, it's close enough to zero to say everybody is working. you can say we are losing jobs because of it. bay area lost jobs for the second straight month last month. the job lossing were small. economies say it's not a sign of

recession, it's a sign we just don't have the people to fill the jobs. those latest numbers out of the labor department shows the bay area lost jobs for the second straight month. unemployment rate is 2%-3% depending on which county you are talking ant. it just simply means there are not enough people to fulfill the jobs and the jobs are going away. san francisco based chariot is back on the road after a two-day time-out from the public utilities commission. they make stops arnds the city like a bus. users say it's easier, faster and clearer than muni. chp said some of the drivers lack the proper paperwork. markets retreated from record highs on monday. we first reported to you as it happened monday morning, president trump threw a wrench in republican plans to come some

people's taxes. he said he will not touch your 401(k). apologizing for comments made to "the new york times." the website is called "the athletic." the person who runs the site says his company will bring an end to newspaper sports pages as all the journalists lose their job to the internet. we will wait them out and let them continuously bleed. we will suck them dry of their best talent. he then later said, i am truly sorry for the tone of my comments in the new york times. i learned a lesson in humility and help me grow. >> you should not be happy about anyone losing their jobs. >> exactly. and the dying of an industry. >> it's sad to see. keep in mind, some of those people could come to work for him at the website. so, probably needs to watch his

let's get started with the morning where you may be getting iced coffee as you go through the day. we have mild temperatures to start. we have anywhere from low 50s to mid-60s as you head out the door. san francisco, the warmest now at 64 degrees. then, as we look at the high temperatures, up to 87 degrees today in the city. oakland, 87 as well. low to mid-90s for the north bay. napa, 94 degrees. expect a high of 90 in livermore as well as san jose. palo alto, low 90s as well. the morning commute in the east bay is much warmer than yesterday at this time. we are starting out with low 60s for that morning drive. with all that sunshine, you need the sunglasses. later today, windows up and air conditioners on. it's going to be in the mid-80s. as it has kids are heading out to school, starting with the need for shorts and t-shirts, even as you head out the door, so, it's just a reminder that we

reportedly turning down a new this morning, health leaders are turning down a request to have the waters in the san diego river tested for hepatitis a. the river runs through the city near the center of san diego. health experts admit there's a high level of human waste in the water, according to the union tribune, local legislatures fear it is contributing to the highest levels of hepatitis a in decades. they say the transmission is not likely linked to the river water and testing it would be a waste of resources. more details for you. last month, nbc bay area looked at the hepatitis a outbreak. over the past six months, 69 hepatitis a cases have been reported in santa cruz county.

that's up from one or two reported by the county each year. santa clara reported two last month, both among inmates. parents have been taking note of this for some time, device time should be monitors. >> that's what experts are doing after youngsters are more and more connected. children under 8 years old have their own tablet device, up from 1% in 2011. parents have to take an active role in controlling their digital appetite. >> don't let your younger children take a cell phone or a tablet into the bedroom. make sure when and if you give them permission to use something like that, it's in a common area and only for a limited time period. >> the study finds 95% of young children have access to a smartphone. nearly half of children 8 and under consume media in the hour

on the side of the road buzzed by the drivers, you could say. the south bay peninsula is clear right now. starting to build for the silicon valley. here, we know about the build for the tri-valley. westbound 580, approaching san ramon road on the other side of the freeway, someone is fixing a flat tire. they are on the shoulder, but very close. they are on the traffic side of the car. it's nerve-racking if uche been there or know. leave them a lane. stay over to the left as you are passing by. this is for drivers heading through the area. the speed sensors show green here, i want to show the live kak ra. westbound approaching the interchange and then, after they pass the driver fixing a flat, they are heading up the dublin bridge. definitely a word of caution through that area. back to you, laura. >> thank you very much, mike. now, a story all new this morning. an alarming study linking recent gun violence in california to gun shows in nevada, a state with fewer firearm regulations.

kris sanchez is clinching the numbers for us this morning. kris, this further adds to the conversation of gun control in the wake of the las vegas massacre. >> reporter: right, that conversation was resparked after the massacre in las vegas. the study connects the dots of what happened at las vegas or rather nevada gun shows and what happens in california communities. the uc berkeley published find when there was a nevada gun show, there was a 70% spike in gun violence in california communities in the two weeks following the gun show. we are talking communities within a driving distance to nevada. now, one of the issues may be that nevada requires no background check on private sales like the ones you see at gun shows. now, the study found no such surge in violence after the california gun shows. they suggest california's gun laws work to curb that violence. here, gun show sales require

those background checks and the ten-day waiting period, which nevada does not. this is weeks after stephen paddock shot and killed 58 people before killing himself. authorities are still trying to track down where paddock got all of his guns, according to nbc news, the gun tracing system in the u.s. realized on paper record, if you can believe that. we should mention this study was partially funded by the national institute of health and we are going to post some of the methodology on www.nbcbayarea.com. we know when there is a study, a lot of folks like to know the science behind it. too much for morning tv, but perfect for the web. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." now, to the wildfires in the north bay. happening today, a new red cross service center opens in napa. people impacted by pocket, tubbs and nuns fire can stop by and get help if they need it. families will be able to meet

who is involved in two separate incidents on diablo road. in one case, the cyclist was hit at 1:30. then, a half hour later, two more cyclists were hit, this time on diablo road near clydesdale drive. they suffered severe injuries. the suspects vehicle is described as a silver or white ford escape. a follow up to a story yesterday here on "today in the bay." the search is heating up for the hit and run driver who critically injured two little ki kids. it happened sunday night on turner parkway near foothill drive. the driver struck a stroller carrying a 3-year-old little girl and a 2-year-old boy. their mother was not injured in that accident. neighbors say cars speed through there all the time. >> these people speed up and down this street. they have no idea about, you

know, the consequences. >> police have released surveillance images of the car you see right here, a white acura tl. if you know whose car this is, contact the police. new this morning, people who live in a homeless camp may be evicted. we have video posted online by people near martin luther king jr. and add lon in berkeley. the video shows moments when the police arrived to deliver eviction noticed. bart owns the land and the homeless group says the city told bart to evict the campers. the earliest that might happen would be tonight. group members vowed to resist efforts to remove them. new this morning, san francisco is considering a fee on uber and lyft riders to pay for local transportation. the san francisco examiner is reporting that the fee could be up to $1 a ride. it's part of a proposed ballot measure. right now, they are not sure

it's 6:42 on this tuesday morning. the hottest day of the week. but, it's still fairly nice this morning. let's look outside in san jose. 40 minutes from sunrise as we look at the temperature trend for santa clara, upper 50s through 8:00, then rising quickly, the temperatures today by noon we are in the upper 70s and lower 80s. the average high temperature is 74. we'll have cooler temperatures. it takes a while before it gets here. we look at the numbers coming up in five minutes. the bottom number there, the nimitz is jamming up before the san mateo bridge. a crash near the toll plaza. we'll track the flow of traffic

there and a crash in the south bay. >> thank you, kari and mike. it is 6:42 right now. developing right now, another scare at sfo involving an arriving air canada flight. new this morning, audio of the incident. in this case, pilots never responded to calls and warnings from air traffic control. it happened sunday. faa says controllers tried multiple times to tale the pilots to go around amid concerns they wouldn't be clear. the air canada plane kept oncoming. we found the audio. you can hear the air traffic control tell them to go around at least five times. >> air canada 781, go around. air canada 781, go around. [ inaudible ] >> that's pretty evident. air canada 781. >> the last part of that audio

was pilots telling controllers the plane had a radio problem. that was after it landed safely. the faa says pilots ignored a red light gun. that is used as a last result by controllers. so far, the issue has not been explained. faa and air canada are investigating. 6:44. details on google's expansion in san jose. this morning, we are getting a closer look at the time line of when this could happen. the mercury news is reporting the construction of the village in downtown san jose is likely to begin eight years from now. this was the after bart's high speed rail connection station is completed. the time line is outlined in a city memo by mercury news. google and partners are snatching up property. they have already purchased 20 different parcels in the area seen highlights in this map.

a follow up on the time line for bart to roll out the fleet rail cars. you may see the new cars as soon as thanksgiving. the first ten new bart cars recently passed their final safety test. now the puc needs to green light their transition into the passenger service. the process could take three weeks. those ten cars will likely initially run as a single train. the rest of the fleet is still on track to debut sometime next year. 6:45. artificial intelligence is helping fight crime in a south bay campus. the university police department are testing a new security system. the high-tech cameras and sensors sniff out toxins in the air, can identify a suspect on camera and pinpoint the location of a gunshot. the camera sends video and location information to all officers at the same time. police say it will get officers on the scene quicker. >> if there were gunshots in the

area, they are going to light up our smartphones. it's going to go directly to the officers. it's going to go directly to dispatch and it will say, you know, location x, y, z. >> it is installed on light poles close to where previous crimes were committed. police say it should be in use by next year. 6:46. turns out a change is costing taxpayers billions of dollars in disaster relief. it is expected to increase as extreme weather events become more common. this is according to a new government study. this year's unusual disaster hurricane season is in the budget. the north bay wildfires are expected to cost the government more. today, the senate is expected to approve an additional $36.5 billion in disaster relief efforts. 6:46. happening today, san francisco leaders launch an effort to impeach president trump. supervisors plan to call for

>> then corker fired back. >> that's right. they are watching the "today's" show eastern feed. the president saw corker, then tweeted, bob corker who helps problem give us the bad iran deal and couldn't get elected dogcatcher in tennessee is now fighting tax cuts. to which corker, a few minutes ago tweeted back, same untruths from an utterly untruthful president. #alertthedaycarestaff. corker is referring to something he said earlier about the white house being a day care. keep in mind, corker is a republican, an important one, too. he is chairman of the senate committee on foreign relations. last month, corker called the president's overall competence into question. >> the president has not yet -- has not yet been able to

rands before the temperatures heat up quickly. right now, 64 degrees in san francisco. lower 60s in oakland and in palo alto. then monitoring the wind speeds coming from the northeast. you are getting high wind gusts coming out of the sacramento valley into mt. diablo as well as the east bay hills with gusts this morning up to 43 miles per hour. blowing that wind offshore, right across half-moon bay. i think half-moon bay is going to heat up this afternoon into the upper 80s. winds calming down as we go through the day. yes, starting out with a high fire danger this morning with the high temperatures in oakland up to 87 degrees. 93 in concord and livermore. 90 degrees there. san jose, 90 and low to mid-90s for the north bay. we'll be watching the thermometer closely for setting new records. if you are geting dressed, it's a day to stay cool, if you are going to the pool or the beach or relaxing. now, we will have a day for the

crash in san jose? >> it is. san jose, the bottom part of the map here. most of the map showing predictable things. 280 northbound at highway 17, traffic there as well as north 87. the concern is getting to capital north 85. at 87, a crash there. i saw slowing because of at least the distraction there, if no lanes are blocked. chp is heading there to give us more info. i'll let you know if it's dramatic. a typical build there. the crash west of 92, that's before you get to the san mateo bridge. it's causing a distraction. one lane is blocked. traffic is jamming up off southbound nimitz 880 off 238. over here, the bay bridge moves well. i want to talk about the slowing we see on this map as well as the waze map. the upper east shore freeway, if you use richmond you might be

purposefully. defense declined to ask questions. 6:57. a deadly shooting investigation is under way in on the yough. a man was shot on west 10th street about 10:30 last night. right now, police are not revealing much about the investigation and no word about the suspect. now, to washington, where president trump, today, will make a push for tax reform. the president is expected to meet with senate republicans to overhaul america's tax code. he will do it in a way that's unprecedented. for him, that's going to capitol hill in person to speak with lawmakers. they agree on the need for tax reform. so far, they have been divided on how to get it done. happening today, going back to the wild. the marine mammal center is releasing a southern sea otter named yankee doodle. he was rescued in july and successfully rehabilitated. it is the second otter the center treated.
