as we look at this seven day forecast, it will be cooling off. can't wait for that, especially in san francisco. a beautiful weekend ahead. for the inland areas, that cooldown comes a little more gradually. hey, we're going to make progress here over the next several days. more delays for bart riders? >> the first was daly city. minor issues there. now, track maintenance causes delay in the east bay and fruitville. it's nice and cool right now. a huge drive for the speed sensors. i want to talk here in the north bay because we have a deadly crash, which is currently working on this, northbound 101 at highway 12. not a lot of detail, but a lot of activity from chp. a big rig involved. what it looks like is it should be clear by 5:30. that's another half hour. i'll track this. no slowing with the deadly crash

concerns of why it happened. we'll bring more details as it affects your morning. right now, another tragedy reporting earlier. a scare for drivers in the east bay that ended in the firy and deadly solo car crash. this is a look at the scene that was left behind. chp says a wrong way driver at 880 crashed into the center divide in fremont. that's when the car burst into flames and, sadly, the driver died. it happened after 2:00 a.m. in northbound lanes near automall parkway. chp officers were trying to stop the car. the driver had not been identified. 5:02, a big development. the bill rolls back a rule that makes it easier to subbane bankd credit card companies. we'll have more on that in ten minutes. the vote cast a wild day in

>> this could be good news for anyone looking to buy a home in san jose. >> it depends on who you are. looking at the numbers, it is still a good time to sell your home, if you want to cash in on the hot housing market and get out the equity you have in your home. if you are a buyer, chances are you are going to face the tough inventory stories we have been reporting for a while. take a look at the big picture first. overall, bay area home sales dropped 4% september over a year ago, which is the biggest regional drop in the state. the average home price went up 11% according to the california association of realtors. what really matters is where you live and where you want to buy. right? so, we dug deeper into the numbers and found the biggest changes were alameda county, a 50% decrease in home sales this september compared to a year ago. contra costa county a 5.5%

decrease. napa county, fell 12%. marin saw a 24% increase. the counties where sales were largely unchanged, santa clara, where we are right now, san francisco, san mateo and sonoma. this could be a problem going forward in the north bay where so many homes were lost to the wildfires there. while this report says it is a cooling trend in the bay area, the inventory is 20% lower than it was last september and i talk about a month ago, you might remember, the real estate agent said when there is little inventory, sellers are hesitant to put their homes on the market even if they have equity to cash out. this is a hot topic in our news room and the neighborhood where i live, the neighborhoods we go for reporting. i am going to post the other graphic data from the report in case you want to read the tea leaves yourself. kris sanchez, "today in the

bay." >> the real estate ads, too. thanks a lot, kris. 5:07. this morning, a man is facing charges from a wild ride. they say justin rutger drove through the front yard of a home and led deputies on a chase around 4:00 a.m. sunday. among the items investigators found in his car, a crowbar, nylon and halloween masks and stolen mail, credit cards and checks. 5:08 right now. the teen accused of killing 8-year-old matty middleton will stand trial as an adult. lawyers plan to challenge that decision. the judge made the decision yesterday after two months of testimony. these are some lookings at the photos inside the courtroom. gonzalez is accused of luring, raping and killing her in santa cruz two years ago when he was 15 years old. the girl's mother says the jury will now see what happened to

her daughter. >> i feel bad for the jury that has to look at the awful photographs. we were spared the photographs. we heard the details. the jury has to see it all. you can't unsee things. >> if he remained in the juvenile system, he would have gotten out before his 20th birthday. new this morning, california lawmakers are digging deeper into governor brown's water fix project. the $16 billion plan is far from being approved. five california democrats say a recent audit found the department of interior used taxpayer money to fund the planning of the project. the funding may be illegal. they will decide if a review is needed. good wednesday morning. right now, at 5:09, a really exciting day for kids in santa rosa heading back to school today for the first time since the wildfires. we start out with temperatures

in the low 50s. it's going to be a cool start. look how quickly those temperatures warm up, heading out for recess, it's going to be in the mid to upper 70s. then, as you get ready to head home, going to be in the low 80s. heads up about outdoor activities like football practice today is going to be in the upper 80s at 3:00. hot and sunny. not much of a wind, either. stay hydrated. by 6:00, it cools a bit. we'll take a look at all of our hot temperatures in the forecast coming up. mike is still tracking that crash in the tri-valley. >> we have an overturned suv is the detail we got. look at the map here. eastbound 580 out of castro valley and san ramon, we have an overturned vehicle. close to the dublin where it was reported. expected to slow heading toward that dublin change. we have another issue that popped up for the dumbarton bridge around the toll plaza,

good wednesday morning. right now at 5:14, some schools in santa rosa will not be starting today. with we'll keep you updated on that. let's get a look at what to expect in cupertino. temperatures mid-60s at 9:00. it's going to be another day where it warms up really quickly to the upper 80s today. it's going to be well above average. i don't think we'll set a lot of new records here. we will talk about what's ahead as the cooldown gets under way. that's coming up in five minutes. kari, we are looking at this. westbound 580 really jammed out of the altamont pass. the reason why it is held up there and see if anybody gets a

benefit. >> thanks, mike. in a matter of days, schools will reopen in sonoma county as they recover from the devastating wildfires. later this morning, the schools take the first step to getting things on track. >> we are joined live from santa rosa and what's going to take place later today. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. today, you are going to have teachers returning to the schools, which have been closed as a result of the north bay wildfires. a long lay off here. this is one of the schools that was completely devastated by the wildfires. we are standing in front of what was the campus for hidden valley elementary. the school pretty mump burned down. they are going to go back to the main campus of hidden valley elementary. it is two-fold. after the school is opening friday. the other half reopening on monday. we have two pieces of information we want to show you.

that first piece of information on your television screen, the schools reopening on friday. hid p valley elementary there as well as monroe and proctor harris elementary to name a few. we are talking 24 schools that were affected by the wildfire and they have to be assessed for smoke damage. we know that water and electricity in the schools that are standing are working. we'll show you the schools that are reopening on monday. come stock middle as well as santa rosa middle, part of the schools that are reopening monday as well. according to the school district, more than 200 students families were affected by the fires. 70 staff members. so, you can expect emotion on both sides, the students coming back on friday and monday as well as the teachers coming back to prepare for school today. the temperatures are heating up in santa rosa. that could be a concern for fire crews.

we are going to talk more about that in an hour. pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> so much stuff going on there, i'm sure the students are happy to finally go back to school. >> we'll be able to continue to follow that one. a lot of people following the dodgers. they took game one against the houston astros yesterday. friday, the team from l.a. is packing up the supplies for the north bay fire victims. they will join the l.a. kids club. a petaluma nonprofit and the boys and girls club of santa rosa. nice to see that giving spirit, no matter who you cheer for. president trump is expected to sign a bill to make it harder for consumers to sue financial company that is hurt them. >> that bill passed the senate last night. scott mcgrew, just barely. >> by the smallest margin it could, laura and marcus. vice president pence had to break the tie, 54-50, again. this bill unravels protections

put in place by the consumer financial protection agency. protections that allow consumers to team up in class action suits. protections that would have undone some of the fine print requirements that require you to go into arbitration instead of suing. companies like wells fargo try to use mandatory arbitration agreements to avoid these lawsuits. they are not uncommon. senators who support the change say the lawsuits cost too much money. the money the financial companies are going to save they say will be passed on to you. wall street will like those rules. the dow closed at a record high, pushed higher by caterpillar. one or two stocks can move the market. take a look at the screen. the s&p was up, but just by a few points. about 30 minutes ago, amazon

announced a smart block and security camera from your phone. apple having trouble getting iphone xs out the door. the japanese newspaper says apple cut production of the new iphone in half. it comes out november 3rd. ceo tim cook turned it into a positive thing, hey, line up early if you want that phone. you haven't seen lines in a long time. we don't know how many people want this new iphone x. sales of iphone 8 seem soft. remember, there's no nine. >> right. >> are they soft because people are hanging out with the x? there's going to be fewer around. >> why is there no nine? >> i don't have no idea. >> joke about seven, eight,

did you fall in love? >> no snow here. it's hard to think about thanksgiving when it's so warm. it's going to be warm throughout the day and the next several days for the inland areas. then it starts to cool off. as we get a look alt what we are seeing right now out the window in san francisco, you are walking out the door to a fairly mild morning. all clear skies, no worries about fog or anything like that. it's 55 degrees in livermore and 54 degrees in morgan hills. napa, this morning, now at 52 degrees. so, a little cooler in some spots, compared to yesterday morning. look at the highs today. it's going to be a few degrees lower than it was. we set several new records at los gatos, a high of 89 degrees. we should be in the mid-70s this time of year. here we are looking at low 90s for concord and danville. oakland, 83 degrees. palo alto, a high of 89 degrees. we'll have upper 70s and low 80s

in san francisco, coming down from the 89 we hit yesterday. it's still going to be upper 80s in the north bay. just a few degrees lower than those mid-90s yesterday afternoon. as you are heading out for that morning commute, we start out with temperatures in the upper 50s by 6:00. as we go through the day, a gradual warm up. it still may be too warm to take the lunch outside. time to turn the air-conditioning on. if you are going golfing in the tri-valley, make sure tee time is before noon. look what happens after noon. upper 80s with mostly sunny skies, starting to feel more uncomfortable. one more day of turning on the air-conditioning in san francisco then much better. more comfortable and cooler for the weekend for the inland areas. it is going to take a while before it cools off. it will cool down the coastal areas. as we head over to mike, tracking two issues for 580. >> two crashes there.

a deadly crash following in the north bay. first, to the alt month pass. 580 jammed up. the bay bridge still stuck in the slow lane restricting one lane, 25% less traffic coming through. keeping things jammed up here toward the dublin interchange. that's great for west 580 toward 680. eastbound 580 is jammed because one lane is blocked. the overturned suv has three lanes blocked between dublin and san ramon road. it is blocking the fast lane. the other lane is open and see recovery. expect the slow at castro valley to the dublin grade. northbound 101, your connector is closed on to highway 12. it's restricted by two lanes traveling north and the santa rosa area. it happened just before, sorry,

look at the maps and we reassure you the commute around the maps are looking good. we want to call out unexpected slowing for folks eastbound on 580. we have that around dublin boulevard, earlier kratch. a number of lanes were blocked. chp reports another lane blocked. that should be clearing, hopefully in the next few minutes. into the area, westbound 580 slows. a stalled vehicle. we'll talk about that coming up, back to you. >> thank you, mike. 5:32 right now. new this morning, a disturbing crime. report of an on campus rape at stanford. >> bob redell is at the campus, sifting through that information. bob, what new information have you been able to find out? >> reporter: good morning to you marcus and laura. stanford university department of public safety is reporting this took place on the east side

of campus. this rape, i'm talking ant, took place on the east side of campus and happened just after midnight early monday morning. law enforcement says the victim and suspect do know each other but did not divulge the circumstances surrounding the attack. it's not clear if officers arrested the suspect as of yet. the police department is reminding students while a majority of assaults, one or both people have been drinking or using drugs. that is not an excuse or defense for the assault. sexual assaults have become a big issue in this country, in part because of brock turner, the stanford swimmer who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman back in 2015. the judge in the case was criticized for sentencing turner to six months in jail. he was released after three months for good behavior. turner is required to register

as a sex offender for the rest of his life. now, the rape, abuse and incest known as rain report nationwide, 1 in 5 undergraduate women are raped or asaurlted. for men, 1-20. when women are attacked, only a few report the crime t. majority start at the start of the semester, between august and november. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. new this morning, an oakland police officer is in the hospital. the search is on for the woman who hit him. police say a driver hit the officer about 9:00 at night near bancroft and 98th in oakland. we have video of officers at the scene, still investigating. two officers were running after a suspect when a women hit one of the officers with a car and drove away. they are not sure if she was involved with the original

suspect or happened to be going by. police are looking at a black lexus with a broken windshield. the officer is in stable condition at the hospital. 5:35. new details that bay area musical heavyweights are lending a helping hand. late last night, via social media, metallica announcing plans to head it at at&t park in november. >> tragic events have left us all saddened, left us all flabbergasted and try to figure out how we could, in some way, bond together and help. >> metallica is doing all we can to help the victims, the first responders and all those who have been affected by the north bay fires. >> that was the founding members of metallica who call the bay area home more than 30 years. the lineup includes dave matthews and g easy.

tickets go on sale friday. california will be getting federal money to help with wildfire clean up. tuesday, congress approved a $36.5 billion disaster fund. meanwhile, california is getting $576.5 million. the bill now goes to president trump for his signature. a trip to yosemite could soon cost you more. they are planning to double the entry fees. under the plan, during the peak season which runs from may to september, per vehicle fees could rise from $30 to $70. new this morning, former 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick may not find a new team, but he has a new book deal. he made it for a little over $1 million. that's according to the new york post. no word on the release date or what the book will cover.

over here, we are going to cover the entire commute. mostly green as you would expect this time of day. the altamont pass, we talked about the slowing out of the altamont pass. a disabled big rig. we are told the tow truck is almost there. look at the slow drive. one lane is blocked. that's causing the jam out of the altamont pass and benefit for folks toward the bdublin interchange. i just heard about a pick-up truck with a flat tire. it may be an issue. track it to make sure it gets off the shoulder smoothly. hayward, no major surprises there, if you travel off 880 interchange toward the san mateo bridge. a look at the travel times toward the bay bridge. 17 minutes. a little build toward the bay bridge. of course the back-up is there. looking good for a wednesday commute. >> wednesday. half way through that workweek.

for members of a homeless encampment that received eviction notices. this shows bart police giving evictions at martin luther king jr. way. bart owns that land. a judge temporarily blocked the eviction effort, at least until another hearing set for next tuesday. 5:43. questions are growing over why tesla fired hundreds of workers this month. they are accusing the company of firing employees who are pro-union. this is video of protest outside tesla's fremont factory. mercury news is reporting unions claimed 1,000 workers were let go. tesla says they were fired because of poor performance. pro-union workers were targeted.

unions are demand k answers from executives. when you have to go in golden gate park, you have a new place to do so. san francisco leaders secured funding for a new, $2 million restroom. it will be located at 45th avenue near lincoln. it's a playground there. city leaders say there's no public restroom within a 15 minute walk. construction is said to begin next month. new this morning, youtube is the latest to come under fire in the russian interveerference in election. the kremlin's propaganda outlet. here is a view from one california congressman helping lead the investigation. >> the russians clearly understand how social media works, how to get in front of as many american viewers as possible on venues like youtube. they have used it very successfully as a way of pushing their propaganda.

is a mild start at 61 degrees. then, as we get a look live in the east bay, looking at oakland, 60 degrees there. 54 degrees in the north bay with clear skies. i want to show you the temperature change from yesterday. just 24 hours ago, it was 25 degrees warmer than it is this morning. the reason why, we had these winds rushing through the central valley, the oakland hills. as it goes downhill, the air descends and warms. we had temperatures starting out yesterday, along the coast, in the low 80s. as we look at the high temperatures today, it won't be that warm, but still much warmer than where we should be this time of year. you can still make it a beach day. oakland, up to 83 degrees. low 90s for the inland area. as we get a look outside in san jose, you are standing in front of the closet like, what am i going to wear today? another day for summer gear.

use different names. how are the schools handling it? >> investigative reporter, bigad shaban continues the series on transgender students. >> reporter: good morning. despite what is expected to be a rise in the number of student who is openly identify as transgender, we learned some bay area schools don't provide their teachers with any training on the issue. we surveyed the 20 largest school districts in the area. all told us they provide training on transgender sensitivity to at least some of their staff. 13 provide it to each of their teachers. at cupertino union, training is only offered if the transgender student is enrolled in school. cal is transgender and a recent high school graduate. the 18-year-old says not being acknowledged leads to wrist cutting in class.
