traffic as i expoktected. the travel times for highway 24, longer. there is a crash on the shoulder with minor slowing for the caldecut. no surprises. back to you. now to washington, d.c. where we may hear from former trump campaign chair paul manafort for the first time since he was charged with money laundering and tax evasion. he says the charges have nothing to do with the president, campaign or alleged collusion with russia. tracie potts is live on capitol hill with a guilty plea from a little known campaign adviser and where the investigation is headed next. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. that little known campaign adviser is george papadopoulos, someone you probably never heard before yesterday. he used to work with the trump

campaign. he is now cooperating with the government. former trump campaign chair, paul manafort and his business associate, rick gates face a dozen charges. they hid $75 million in after shore accounts, money earned years ago consulting for a russian backed ukrainian leader. >> there is no evidence that mr. manafort or the trump campaign colluded with the russian government. >> reporter: a guilty plea by a lesser known campaign adviser could be the link investigators were looking for. george papadopoulos admits, lying to the fbi about his russian contacts during the campaign. >> they had him out there playing dial a crook, calling people with wiretapped phone. i'll bet anything, they have a whole array of tapes. >> reporter: the white house insists papadopoulos's role was limited. >> a volunteer position. again, no activity was ever done in official capacity.

>> reporter: on capitol hill, democrats pointed fingers and republicans said little. >> that isn't our job, not our wheelhouse. >> reporter: some believe the seemingly unrelated manafort charges could connect to russia. >> they are looking at decades in prison. there's a tremendous incentive for them to come to prosecutors and say, we would like to cooperate. >> reporter: meantime, president trump is tweeting, quote, why aren't crooked hillary and the dems the focus? connection here. law enforcement officials say paul manafort forwarded an e-mail from that lower level policy staffer who pleaded guilty and by doing so may have suggested manafort, when he was at the top of the trump campaign knew about that russia connection. marcus and laura? >> thank you. coverage of the special counsel investigation alleged ties will

continue next on the "today" show coming up after "today in the bay" at 7:00 a.m. 6:04. new this morning, the search is on for an armed robber who stole opioids from an east bay pharmacy. thom jensen is live at the wall greens. the robbery is dealing with the opioid crisis. >> reporter: less than a week ago, laura, you remember the president declared opioid abuse a national, public health emergency and the robberies are symptoms of that abuse and the addiction to opioids. remember last month, we found out the bay area definitely is not immune to these robberies. we have seen several last month in danville with another one. the suspect there, they were able to get surveillance video and a picture of that. that man is still wanted by police. in this case, the thief jumped

over the pharmacy counter at 10:40 last night and threatened the pharmacist with a gun before stealing an opioid based drug. the thief then ran out of the store where we are now in the parking lot, took off on foot. they have not seen him since then. we looked at the data, 91 americans die every day from opioid abuse, five per day in california. since 1999, the death rate has increased 200% according to the center for disease control. that said, the rate of prescribing the drug, the key indicator dropped a bit thach. that shows california is doing better than most states in the nation. back on this case, a walnut creek department says it could have a picture of a suspect later this morning for us. live in walnut creek, thom

jensen, "today in the bay." police are asking any other robbery victims to come forward. what you are looking at is video showing a man walking up to an elderly woman and ripping off the jewelry from her neck. this 22-year-old was arrested for the crime. the victim's mom is relieved he only robbed her and didn't get more violent. he asked not to show his face. >> my mom was trying to, you know, push back and get the chain back. she is lucky she didn't get hurt. >> the suspect robbed at least seven women between july and september. this crime, caught on camera was in east san jose. police say carter was arrested in 2014 for a similar string of robberies. 6:07. the murder trial is under way for a man accused in a dui crash that killed a mother and her 14-month-old daughter. in may of 2015, rodriguez and

her daughter were killed when a car plowed into them at high speed. they were attending a party in a livermore home. two boys were also seriously injured. the suspect was drunk and had just left the arts and wine festival. jones' attorney admitted the involvement in the crash and argued the circumstances of the case did not amount to murder. new, contra costa county is adding perkings to the ride share program. it's a partnership with the county. here is how it works, download scoops app and find a ride. so far, they are getting a $2 discount. now drivers receive $2 reimbursement and free bart parking. we looked at the numbers. more than half a million seats go unused. good news, the nuns fire is

fully contained. the tubbs fire is 99% contained. there are some new challenges ahead with the rain coming this weekend, a toxic soup of chemicals could leak into storm drains and eventually into the bay. lead, mercury and arsenic are in the ashes of the homes destroyed in the wildfires. officials say they might use straw and bails of hay to keep the ashes from running off in local creeks. cal fire set up a task force for protection. right now, 6:09. as you get ready to head out to school in livermore, cool temperatures not only here, but around the bay area. upper 40s as you walk to school and mostly cloudy skies. we will get clearing today and then, by the time you pick the kids up, it will be in the mid-60s. if you are going trick or treating in livermore, it's going to be in the upper 60s at

allowed amount. malcolm x schools are the other schools impacted. the district said the problem is due to plumbing. metal is leaching into the water. berkeley leaders debate changes. currently, berkeley officers are required to file reports when a weapon is used, or injury occurs. councilmembers consider changing the policy to include anytime force is used. the others is use of force by severity. tech companies are coming clean about their russian user. >> scott mcgrew joins us about the information they are going to get. >> they have to speak honestly to congress. they are going to give us that honest testimony ahead of those hearings. twitter, facebook and google face questioning. it's rare for them to go to washington much less face

congress. sheryl sandburg was there a couple weeks ago ahead of facebook's big testimony. the question is, how did russians, working for the kremlin, create advertisements on the social network and what did they have? good example, we know the most popular republican twitter account in tennessee, ten underscore gop was russian. twitter shut that down. all three networks are telling us numbers, the numbers they tell congress. facebook says there were 470 russian accounts pretending to be something else. twitter 2700 accounts far more than announced. take a look at the numbers. facebook found 470 accounts, but they created 80,000 posts, most of them fake news, reaching 126 million facebook users. t

moves in with the seven day forecast. san francisco, the rain arrives on friday evening. the rain is off and on saturday and sunday as we fall back. that means setting clocks back an hour. monday, a lot of showers are wrapping up. for the inland areas, we reach the upper 60s and upper 50s for the weekend. we will talk more about that. mike is tracking a crash in pleasanton. >> a pleasant drive around the bay. the build starts at hayward and the san mateo bridge. the crash at 92 not presenting much of a problem. we focus here, yet. the tri-valley, southbound 680 is jammed up here, guys. showing a smooth flow of traffic. we have a big slowdown here. i want to show you the southbound drive. jamming up where the crash is blocking the fast lane. that is a problem off the dublin interchange. it is reported by a wazer. we want to say thank you for that. folks coming over here may see

overnight in san francisco, where an employee was stabbed outside a safeway grocery store. "today in the bay's" pete suratos live in the district this morning. what do we know that led up to the violence, pete? >> reporter: good morning, laura. we are learning this suspect was apparently shoplifting inside this safeway. that leads to an altercation with an employee. that employee is stabbed. i spoke to some of that employee's colleagues inside. there was actually a clerk who works here at the safeway. that is new information in this hour. you are looking at video, san francisco police on the scene when this took place around 12:30 a.m. the police say the suspect got into a physical altercation. we are learning a clerk at this store. while that's taking place, the suspects dog bites the clerk and the suspect stabs that clerk numerous times in the leg and

torso. that's a couple areas where the clerk was stabbed. we are told that employees tried to naturally help their colleague while this was taking place. the suspect tried to stab them before fleeing the scene. he was unsuccessful. the suspect was detained and arrested. the victim has life threatening injuries. called to get an update on the condition. right now, an update if that status changed. the store is back to regular operating hours. it opened at 6:00 a.m. the stabbing took place at 12:30 a.m. the store usually closes at 2:00 a.m. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you for that update there. the kate steinle murder case continues in san francisco. right now, both sides are fighting over the path of the bullet that struck steinle. they claim jose intended to shoot steinle pointing a gun and firing at pedestrians on pier

14. they argue the bullet hit the ground first, which could change the direction. the defense attorney says the suspect was too far from the victim. >> i will say this, when i see the photographs posted, they seem very far away. in some of those photos, you can see the divot, the chair and you don't see the memorial that is set up. that's how far it is. >> both sides are back in court this morning, so is sam brock. follow nbc bay area on twitter for updates. a law requiring gun owners to lock up their weapons when they leave their home. the proposed law calls on owners to lock up guns in a gun safe, lock box or trigger lock. owners have 24 hours to report a stolen gun without facing penalties. similar laws are in effect in san francisco, oakland, berkeley and sunny vale.

this man died on sunday morning. he had been arguing with a group of young people driving recklessly in their neighborhood when they shot him, killing him. neighbors say he was trying to protect the community. >> that could have been me. i probably would have done the same thing. heard the car screeching, like them doing doughnuts. that kind of woke me up. i was listening, then i heard pop, pop, pop. i jumped up and told my wife, that wasn't fireworks. >> the sheriff's department released photos of two cars there that they are looking for. one is a red mitsubishi eclipse, the other a gray ford mustang. the sale of a san francisco street to a couple. they are to reconsider that sale. it has been moved. the meeting will now take place on november 28. you may recall the city sold a

small street. the affluent neighborhood and homeowners association are challenging the sale and asking supervisors to rescind it. as you hit the road, you might want to swing by the gas station. the statewide gas tax kicks in tomorrow. kris sanchez is live in san jose to break down how much the new tax is going to cost us. good morning, kris. >> reporter: hi, there, laura. if you fill up your 20 gallon tank, you are going to save $2.40 by doing it today. sometimes, it matters how it feels on the inside and you will be getting one over on the man, if you fill up today instead of tomorrow. talk about the 12 cent gas tax that goes in effect tomorrow. 12 cents for regular unleaded. diesel users pay 20 cents more and 4% more in sales tax. this could add $5 billion to the state cougher intended for state and local projects.

take a look at this graphic. by 2019, 77 cent of every dollar you spend on gas pay for taxes with california getting 58 cents of that dollar. the president of the silicon valley taxpayers association says before tomorrow, california paid the highest gas taxes in the country with little to show for it. >> the government already takes a substantial portion of our income. how come that money is not being spent to keep the roads up and repaired? the rest of the 49 other statesmanage to do it. >> reporter: if you are thinking i'm good because i drive a zero emission car, you are not going to pay at the pump, but you will pay when you register your car. a new $100 vehicle registration fee goes into effect in 2020. tomorrow, november 1st is the first day that gas stations can start switching over to the winter blend of gas. that might offset things to not

already passed measures similar. scott mcgrew, trump is tweeting this morning. >> there is no proof of collusion, a day after the special counsel charges and two campaign employees, including the campaign manager. the biggest surprise, though, is the third man, george papadopoulos. a former trump campaign worker who made contact with the russians, then lied about it to the fbi. he since admitted the whole thing with a plea agreement. a shocker from the documents in the papadopoulos plea deal is that the russians told papadopoulos they had the democrats hacked e-mails april 29 of 2016. the trump campaign knew about the e-mails april 29th, then, months later, in july, their candidate said this -- >> russia, if you are listening, i hope you are able to find the

there. anymore you have a problem with motorcycles, we are going to follow this. we are going to stick with the maps to see how things are building up. we have the build up. oakland moves smoothly toward the bridge, giving folks a chance with warning. you may want to head to the san mateo bridge. it shows a hefty build off hayward. folks may head south there because of the option of avoiding the bay bridge. the other option for you as we look at the rest of the bay, of course the transit system. bart has delays out of bay fair because of an earlier issue with police activity. that has cleared up. bart is showing no delays there. that is a good option for you. kari, at least we have folks that are able to get through on the roadways. we are going to track that issue for the bay bridge tunnel. over to you. >> looks clear out there. we haven't seen fog. just monitoring the weather situation around the bay bridge. we are going to also have mostly cloudy skies as you head out the

door and cooler temperatures in spots as we take a live look outside in san francisco. as we are starting out with 50s there, it won't really warm up that much for the afternoon. the seven day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. we are going to start out in the south bay. take a look at the forecast as we get closer to the weekend. rain moving in. now, today it stays dry. we'll be in the mid to upper 60s for the inland area and 59 at half-moon bay today. as you are getting dressed, grab a hat to protect your hair from the high humidity. it's a great idea to have a jacket. this is, of course, if you are not dressing up for halloween. long sleeves and pants will be comfortable as we will only see the high temperatures once again in the 60s. it cools off fast. let's go to santa rosa for the trick or treat forecast. mid-60s by 5:00. as soon as the sunsets, the temperature drops ten degrees. it's going to be breezy, too. upper 40s late tonight.
