>> i have been preparing for this moment my whole life. >> that's what i'm afraid of. we have a fun morning planned. wheat get to that a little bit later on. let's get to the top story. the fall-out of the first indictments in the special counsel investigation of the trump campaign's alleged ties to russia. >> that's right. the white house is attempting to brush aside these criminal charges against former trump campaign chairman paul manafort and his one-time top aide rick gates, but it's actually the plea deal with another campaign advisor who pled guilty and is now cooperating with the fbi that could be the bigger concern. we have reports now. we'll also talk to another former campaign manager, cory lou louindowski. good morning to you. >> links between the campaign and justice officials. the kremlin dismissing these new headlines as groundless accusations, even as the

president's top aides say the trump investigation has become very distracting for president trump. >>. >> reporter: this morning the white house pushing back reacting to the first criminal charges in robert mueller's russia investigation. the president's chief of staff on fox news. >> all of the activities, as i understand it, that they were indicted for was long before they ever met donald trump or had any association with the campaign. >> press secretary sarah sanders also downplaying the news. >> today's announcement has nothing to do with the president, has nothing to do with the president's campaign or campaign activity. >> but court documents reveal a volunteer trump campaign foreign policy advisor, george papanopolous pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his timing with contacts. in his documents he said he was told by the russians they had dirt on hillary clinton, including thousands of emails. that was april 2016, well before it was publicly known the

russians had hacked the democrats. one month earlier this photo shows papanopolous with then candidate trump who had praised the consultant in a meeting with -- >> he is an oil and energy consultant. excellent guy. >> reporter: the 30-year-old was arrested three months ago and has since been cooperating with mueller's investigators. court documents refer to unnamed campaign officials who were aware he was trying to set up a meeting between trump and vladimir putin during the campaign. law enforcement sources tell nbc news one of those unnamed officials was former trump campaign chairman paul manafort. both manafort and his former deputy rick gates pleading not guilty monday to federal felony charges during a short court appearance. they're accused of hiding millions in foreign consulting fees to avoid paying taxes, failing to register as foreign lobbyists, and lying to the fbi. prosecutors say the two men

pocketed $75 million from 2006 to 2015 stashing the money in off shore banks to hide it from the government. the indictment makes no mention of manafort's role in the trump campaign. manafort's lawyer calling the charges ridiculous. >> i think you all saw it today that president donald trump was correct, there is no evidence that mr. manafort or the trump campaign colluded with the russian government. >> reporter: prosecutors say man why fort's money helped cover the cost of four homes from manhattan to suburban washington d.c. as well as other lavish purchases. more than a quarter million dollars on luxury cars, 900,000 plus for antique rugs, 1.4 million on clothes, accident and nearly 8 million in home improvements. the judge set bail for both men ordering them to home detention. >> the president this morning responding on twitter accusing the fake news of working overtime. quoting paul manafort's lawyer who said there was no collusion

and adding few people knew the low level volunteer named george who has already proven to be a liar. of course, remember, the president knew george papanopolous. he called him an excellent guy during that interview with "the post" last year. matt and savannah. >> thank you. legal analyst ari melber is with us. in one sense the white house was breathing a sigh of relief when the manafort and gates indictments came down, and the conduct doesn't touch on the time when they are involved in the trump campaign. it pleads guilty to meeting with russians, trying to arrange a meeting with russians and the trump campaign, and the russians telling if he has dirt -- they've got dirt on hillary clinton. how does it all shake down? >> how it shakes down is the big difference waking up this morning. you have someone pleading guilty to russia related issues from the campaign. there's no dispute to this part. he lied to the fbi about it. now he admits that. that is a huge break in the russia investigation even if we

don't know how high other problems go. >> this isn't the end. this is only the beginning. what's the prosecutorial strategy here? you have manafort and gates. you've got them indicted. you let them marinate for a little bit, allowing them to contemplate the consequences they faced all the while knowing this other guy, papadopolous is want coulding to the investigation, and you come back at a later date and dangle that again? >> you are putting your finger on the strategy and what is so fascinating about this news. the only reason any of us know this is because bob mueller wants us to know this. this is part of his strategy. to unfurl this financial set of crimes and something that has direct evidence linking back to the direct efforts to try to help the donald trump campaign. clearly bob mueller's strategy is he got what he can get from his cooperating witness, and now he wants other people on notice, look how far ahead of this we are. maybe you want to be on the cooperating side.

>> ari, thank you very much. cory lewendowski served as trump campaign manager just before paul mania farth manafor currently an advisor to a super pact. good morning to you. >> happy halloween. good morning to you. >> how well do you know george? >> he was a low level volunteer who might have attended a meeting of the foreign policy advisory team. the one meeting that took place. he was not a person who was involved with the day to day operations of the campaign or a person who i recall interacting with on a regular basis at all. >> were you aware or was anyone in the white house aware that he had actually been arrested as part of this investigation back in july? have you had any interaction or has anyone in the inner circle had interaction with him in the time since july? >> you know, i can't speak for the people in the white house or what they may or may not be aware of, but i can say un

unequivocally on behalf of myself, i have not had interactions with george since i left the campaign that i can recall in june of 2016, and have not had any interaction, and i was not aware of his arrest other than what was reported yesterday. >> knowing that he was arrested and is now cooperating with the special counsel, if he was in contact with anyone in the inner circle through phone calls or emails or visits to the white house, do you imagine there are some people in the white house this morning waking up with dry mouths? >> well, look, i can say this. you know, i know a number of the people in the white house. i had the privilege of working with them on the campaign, and george was never a person who was part of a team that was interacting with a senior management on a regular basis. look, if george did, in fact, lie to the fbi and he has been arrested for those lies, then he should be accountable for that, which anybody should be. i don't think there's any concern in the white house about his -- any potential contact that he may or may not have had. >> cory, let's see if we can clear up a few things from the indictment, which i'm sure you have read.

are you the "high ranking campaign official" who received three or four emails from george papadopolous during this april, may, june time period during the campaign? >> you know, it's a great question, savannah, and i don't know the answer to it because as you know, as the campaign manager to the trump campaign, i was receiving thousands of emails a day. i don't know if that is -- if that was specifically referring to me or was that paul manafort or was that rick gates or somebody else? i don't know the answer to that. >> some of the emails have quotes. frafrm, one of the emails states that the campaign official, which may or may not be you, forwarded an e-mail and said you are running point on this. did you send an e-mail like that? >> yeah. savannah, look, i don't recall that specific e-mail, but you are asking me to remember an e-mail from april of 2016 on a day that i -- any given day i would have received 1,000 emails and this would have potentially am cool from a low level volunteer. i don't remember the exact e-mail, so i don't know if i'm that person or not, and i can't

speak to who is that -- who is named in that particular incident. >> at any time, cory, did george tell you either verbally or in an e-mail that russian officials had told him that they had dirt on hillary clinton specifically thousands of her emails? do you ever receive -- remember receiving that message from george? >> i don't remember that, and the reason would be is because george was such a low level volunteer. i don't recall having much interaction with him throughout the campaign. he would have potentially been talking to somebody else in the campaign, but as the campaign manager, particularly that time when we were in the middle of an intense primary fight with ted cruz and john kasic, my day to day operating was not interacting with a low level volunteer. >> let me see if we can clarify this. were you aware that the russians had hacked the dnc computers and emails before the news broke? did you get that information from someone before april of that year?

>> to the best of my knowledge, absolutely not. when i found out about that, i found out about it through public press reports. >> cory, has the fbi asked to interview you? have you been interviewed by the fbi? >> look, let me be very clear. i'll be more than happy to cooperate with any ongoing investigation. i will be as clear as i can be. i will cooperate with any investigation because i am 100% certain that all of my interactions at the campaign were beverage board and legal, and i have nothing to hide. if they ask me to participate, i'll be happy to do that unekwifically. >> all right. cory, thank you very much. appreciate your time. >> another storyline connected to russian interference involves the spread of misinformation on sites like facebook, twitter, and google, and starting today representatives from all three are testifying in hearings on capitol hill. nbc business correspondent jolene kent is there. good morning to you. >> matt, good morning. ahead of today's hearings, we are getting more information and

new details on exactly how widespread this problem may have been. 126 million americans exposed to russian backed content on facebook in the lead-up to the presidential election back in 2016, and there is much more. >> reporter: new bombshells from facebook and twitter on russia's attempt to influence american voters in the lead-up to the 2016 election. facebook revealing to nbc news that 80,000 pokes from russian-backed facebook accounts potentially reached one-third of all americans between 2015 and 2017. according to prepared testimony obtained by nbc news, the world's largest social network will tell congress today that approximately 126 million people may have been served one of their stories at some point during the two-year period. those posts came from 120 fake russia-backed pages. at first they only reached 29 million users, but then through likes, shares, and follows, they

reached 126 million americans. that's half of all eligible voters. facebook says we shut these accounts down and began trying to understand how they misused our platform. the content was seperate from 3,000 targeted ads on facebook and instagram, paid for by russian entities. the admission comes nearly a year after facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg initially brushed off facebook's role in the election. a position he recently walked back. >> i don't want anyone to use our tools to undermine democracy. that's not what we stand for. >> also new today, twitter says it found nearly 37,000 accounts that were linked to russian entities between september 1st and november 15th, 2016. these automated accounts, or bots, tweeted 1.4 million times and were seen 288 million times. twitter says the impact was limit adding russian-linked automated accounts added to less than three-quarter of a percent of the overall election reeld

tweelts on twitter at the time. investigators are expecting more answers from twitter, facebook, and google in a series of hearings starting today on capitol hill. >> i want to know what we're going to do to make sure that our 2018 and 2020 elections are secure because, frankly, this threat is going to continue. they have a responsibility to help us stop foreign interference in our elections. >> another big question on the minds of congressional investigators is what will happen next and if there is any link between the trump campaign and these social media companies and their links to russia. back to you, guys. >> all right, joe. thank you very much. now to a surprise move of the sentencing hearing of bo bergdahl. he took the witness stand on monday and made a tearful apology for abandoning his post in afghanistan back in 2009. nbc's kerry sanders is at fort bra bra braggwith more on this, where good morning. >> good morning, savannah. bo bergdahl could face life in

prison after pleading guilty to dessertion, and misbehavior before the enemy. in a surprise move he took the stand here and dramatically apologized for what he had done during war. >> high emotion in court from army sergeant bo bergdahl. bergdahl surprising observers by taking the stand and teergfarfu apologizing to those after desserting his post in afghanistan back in 2009. it was never my intention for anyone to be hurt, bergdahl said, reading from a statement, and choking back tears. i grieve for those who have suffered and their families. one of those soldiers master sergeant mark allen, was shot in the head while searching for bergdahl. his wife, shannon, testifying just before bergdahl's apology. tearfully describing the traumatic brain injury, that paralyzed her husband, leaving him unable to speak or hold their 9-year-old daughter. he is not able to reach out for her or talk to her, she said.

bergdahl was released in 2014 after being held by the taliban for five years in a controversial prisoner exchange under the obama administration. in graphic testimony monday, bergdahl described how during his captivity he was kept in a cage for four of the five years. bergdahl saying he was repeatedly beaten, conclude, i think about what i did every day. but on social media little sympathy. he is a coward that ruined the lives of brave men and their family, said one. another writing, he is only sorry he might go to jail for life, which is what he deserves. sentiments echoed by then candidate trump on the campaign trail. >> a dirty rotten traitor. >> bergdahl's legal team had asked the judge to dismiss the case because of comments by president trump. the judge declined. he said he would consider the president's comments as a mitigating factor for sentencing. >> bergdahl was on the stand for more than two hours because he

the coast. san francisco, 50 degrees. oakland, 5:00, 60 degrees. quickly cooling off temperatures around sunset. we'll be in the mid-50s throughout the night with breezy wind. the next few days, the temperatures stay on the cool side in san francisco with upper 50s. up to 61 by thursday and the rain moving in late friday into the weekend. we'll see periods of showers off and on from friday to monday morning. let's head to mike for an update on the commute. better news for the bay bridge. we have the crash that cleared from the tunnel. a scooter of some sort, a smaller vehicle, but no major injuries. the commute is westbound 80. you may see more folks across the bridge as well as the san mateo bridge. south of the bridge, good for a tuesday. no crashes blocking the lane.

>> change of plans. >> also, this morning, new doubts are now being raised about the remarkable rescue from two women from hawaii who say they were stranded at sea for about five months. we have the details on this. >>reporter: happy halloween morning to you. overnight we got new details about some part of that story that simply don't add up raising questions about whether that incredible tail of survival is in fact credible. the women this morning standing by their account. >> this morning, new questions about that harrowing sboourvive sea. all parties arriving in japan yesterday saying they had drifted helplessly in the pacific for five months. >> had they nod been able to locate us we would have been dead within 24 hours. >> but the u.s. coast guard said the women never activated the emergency beacon.

they admit the pair did not activate the baek conwriting we were in distress but were throatithroat floating. felt the week conshould only be activated if we were in him nents danger. looking back, we should have acty vatded it sooner. the women set sail from honolulu but said a storm swamped their engine and broke the mast. the coast guard says it made contact them in june near tahiti. the captain saying they were not in distress and expected to make land the neck morning. telling nbc we never got near ta hetty. >> as for the devastating forms. we had winds between 50 and 72 miles an hour and waves up to 35 feet. >> the national weather service now saying there were no storm systems in or around hawaii at

i removed myself from everyone in my life. >> six months without speaking. >> yeah. just the fact that you have people in your life that can understand where you're are, not judge you for it. >> it was a huge lesson of friendship and trust. it's easy to feel offended or want to be there. they need to go through their own thing. >> i had everything. and i was absolutely broken inside. and i kept it all together enough to where i would never let you down. but i kept it too much together to where i let myself down. >> reporter: you feel like you got caught up in the business or fame or that kind of stuff? >> i definitely don't. i don't think i accepted the position i had. it was me almost feeling guilty about fame because people can see anyone in my pgs aosition a say they have it all. they have everything. they get to live a cool life. >> privately, it's a different

friends from the plaza. >> good morning, everybody. welcome back to "today." nice to have you with us. not just any tuesday. halloween tuesday. >> waiting patiently for this day. >> we're going to have the big costume reveal, coming up in a little while. we'll get to that in a moment. we begin this half hour with your news at 8:00. and the trump administration trying to distance itself from the first defendants indicted in connection with the russia investigation. we also have new details about what led to these charges. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker joins us with the latest. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. in an interview overnight, chief of staff john kelly said the criminal charges handed down by special counsel robert mueller are unrelated to the white house and the trump campaign. but court documents show george papadopoulos, a campaign policy adviser, pleaded guilty this month to lying to the fbi about the timing of his contact with russians who had ties to the government. papadopoulos was told by the

russians in april 2016, they had dirt on hillary clinton, including thousands of e-mails. documents show papadopoulos e-mailed a number of trump campaign aides about potential meetings with russians. one of those aides, former trump campaign chairman, paul manafort, according to law enforcement sources. the meetings never happened. both manafort an his former deputy rick gates pleaded not guilty monday to federal felony charges for activities prior to the campaign. savannah. >> kristen welker at the white house, thank you. in the meantime, a federal court has blocked the trump administration from banning transgender people from military service. back in august, the president signed a memorandum that required the u.s. military to discharge transgender service members by no later than march of 2018. on monday, a federal judge ruled that ban was likely unconstitutional saying that transgender service members who sued over the policy were likely to win their lawsuit.

the judge said there was no evidence why a ban should be implemented. news out of hollywood now. an arrest warrant has been obtained for actress rose mcgowan, for felony possession of a controlled substance. officials say the actress left behind personal belongings which tested positive for narcotics on a flight that landed at washington dulles international airport back in january. mcgowan, who has been an outspoken voice against sexual harassment in hollywood claims this warrant was part of a conspiracy to silence her. now we turn to a pick me up this halloween morning. >> leave it to the shriners hospital in salt lake city, to make halloween special for everybody. this year, the hospital expanded its wheel share costume program. for 5-year-old penny peterson, that means trick-or-treating in a candy cart. a "star wars" fan gets to cruise around in a millennium falcon. how about that? and how about an astronaut on

a san francisco safeway store good morning. it's 8:26. i'm marcus washington. a san francisco store worker is in bad condition after police say he was stabbed after confronting. this happened in the richmond district near seventh and cab brea. when the worker confronted the thief, the suspect's dog bit the worker. the victim was stabbed in the back. his injuries are said to be life threatening. the arriving officers say they located the suspect and arrested him. police have not identified the person arrested by officers. we're following a crash on the peninsula. >> palo alto with our live camera, northbound towards mars, southbound jammed up as well. heading down toward university. let's show you the map. the crash was just off the merge
