rockefeller plaza. welcome to "today." thanks for joining us. i'm craig melvin. >> i'm sheinelle jones. dave price is filling. he's at metlife stadium in new jersey. he's going to preview some of this year's thanksgiving macy's day parade. balloons coming up. >> lets get right to the stop story. president trump's trip to a sharks. overnight the president flew to hawaii. the president will now travel to asia for a series of important meetings which will involve serious talks about north korea. we have it all covered this morning. let's start with nbc's white house correspondent kelly o'donnell. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. the president will wake up at the beach later this morning before a nearly two week long overseas trip that will focus on high stakes issues like the

north korean nuclear threat and allies in asia. but the president may find it hard to leave behind the controversy over the russia investigation. >> visiting an american paradise. a working stop in hawaii. the president and first lady paid their respects at pearl harbor. >> this is very special and to be visiting pearl harbor which i've read about, spoken about, heard about, studied, but i haven't seen. >> president trump laid a wreath at the uss arizona nearly 76 years after the attack by japan. that history a sober reminder of what's at stake now with north korea. president trump attended a close door briefing with the pacific command, key military leaders deeply involved in any north korea strategy. there's a lot of tough people and a lot of talented people. >> reporter: the asia trip

includes stops in japan, south korea, china, vietnam and the philippines taking the president inside a region on edge over north korea's nuclear program. national security adviser h.r. mcmaster. >> the president recognizes that we're running out of time and will ask all nations to do more. >> reporter: leaving washington friday, president trump claimed little memory of his interaction with george papadopoulos whom he once praised. >> george papadopoulos, he's an oil and energy consultant, excellent guy. >> reporter: a campaign volunteer who pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators about his contacts with russia. both attended a march 2016 meeting. a former adviser also there tells nbc news trump listened with interest as papadopoulos suggested a face-to-face with vladimir putin and candidate trump, an idea rejected by jeff sessions. >> i don't remember much about that meeting. it was a very unimportant

meeting. it took place a long time. don't remember much about it. >> reporter: in that same q & a with reporters the president said he's frustrated with his justice department for not investigating the democrats. he thanked hawaii for its welcome and will travel to tokyo later today. >> kelly o'donnell for us in hawaii. >> juan is nbc news national security analyst and was a top national security adviser for former president george w. bush. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> this trip seems to be a test for president trump. obviously testing his diplomatic skills and his deal making skills. talk about the stakes here for this president. >> these are enormous stakes. this is the longest trip any u.s. president will take to the region since 1991. visiting five countries with as the report described the stakes on north korea couldn't be higher. so you have the urgency of the threat of north korea. the president trying to reassure

allies in japan and south korea, trying to pressure, convince china to do more which is part of the reason he's going to be meeting with president xi in china. as well dealing with the reality that allies in the region are wondering what the u.s. role in asia looks like, especially after the president pulled out of the trans pacific partnership. so the stakes are high. leaders want to hear what the president has to say. they want to be reassured by the u.s. presence. certainly he wants to reinforce the relationships he's begun to forge with some of those leaders like president abe in japan and president xi in china. >> how does this president go about talking to these asian leaders and convincing them to do what you just talked about, contain north korea? >> i don't think he's going to have to do much with japan and south korea. i think there's a sense of common purpose and urgency with those countries. you've seen on the eve of his

visit bomber ks and fighters fr the usa a.s. fly near north kor. there's been a i think with respect to china, that's the big question here. can the president convince the chinese to exert their enormous economic pressure. they control about 90% of trade with north korea. can they use their political pressure, and can they use their diplomatic interests. they are the backstop for north korea. i think that is the big trick in this trip, can he actually shift that calculus and pressure north korea through china. >> finally, craig and i were just talking, this is quite the week. many distractions at home, low approval ratings, no legislative views, a lot of people talked about that, will those problems overshadow this trip? >> they will certainly follow him. i don't think they'll overshadow the trip. there's so many issues at stake.

you have the north korea problem, front and center. administration has placed enormous urgency on that. president xi's re-established his power, the most powerful chinese leader since mao. you have the role in vietnam and the philippines for those summits, and so those are enormous issues, big ticket items that no doubt will be predominant. he'll be there for 12 days. he'll have to deal with a lot of questions about domestic politics and issues back here in the states, but these are high order international issues and in some ways this may be a welcome visit for the president, where he can focus on substance and real issues and no doubt his national security advisers are happy he'll be in these environments dealing with these world leaders. >> all right, ron, thank you for talking with us this morning. >> thank you. as president trump heads overseas, he's also got a lot to say about a controversy back home and this one involves hillary clinton and the

allegations she had unfair help to beat bernie sanders. nbc's andrea mitchell has more. >> reporter: president trump trying to deflect from the russia probe, seizing on a new charge that hillary clinton coopted the dnc to defeat bernie sanders. >> you ought to look at hillary clinton and the new book that was just put out by donna brazile, where she basically bought the dnc and she stole the election from bernie. >> donna brazile, former interim democratic party chair writes "hacks," that she stumbled on to a shocking truth about the clinton campaign. i told bernie the cancer was she had exerted this control of the party long before she became its nominee. the accusation that clinton stacked the deck against sanders. >> the dnc at that time certainly had its finger on the scale in favor of secretary clinton, no doubt about that. >> massachusetts senator elizabeth warren with chuck todd. >> they really believed this all

throughout the primary that the system was rigged against him, rigged against him, and now here's donna brazile saying, yes, you were right. >> donald trump fanning the flames. nbc news abstained clinton's contract with the dnc, which said it would not start until the general election, but a former leader acknowledges clinton did have improper control before becoming the nominee. >> the question is, did that affect the election, and the answer is, again, no. nobody can give me one example of how it helped hillary, except maybe the scheduling of the debates. >> the president saying the justice department should investigate clinton, although even if true, it was not illegal. for "today," andrea mitchell, nbc news. >> for the first time in years, bowe bergdahl has a weight lifted from his shoulders. friday a military judge ruled he shouldn't spend time in prison after pleading guilty to

desertion. many outraged by the decision. nbc pentagon correspondent hans nichols has the latest. >> bowe bergdahl waking up today a free man, free but dishonorably discharged after pleading guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. he opted for a judge over a jury, who opted not to condemn bergdahl to president. but president trump blasted the ruling, tweeting "the decision on sergeant bergdahl is a complete and total disgrace to our country and military." echoing comments he made about bergdahl during the campaign. >> he's a traitor, no good traitor. >> comments bergdahl's lawyers objected to but may have helped him get a lighter sentence. some say bergdahl suffered enough. >> he's already been hammered by the taliban for five years. that was sufficient self-imposed punishment. >> in addition to his demotion in rank, bergdahl must forfeit

$1,000 of pay for ten months. >> dishonorable discharge, he won't benefit in any way from his misbehavior, and betraying his buddies. >> bergdahl has been a lightning rod since his release, gaunt and confused after five years of torture, living at times in a cage. a controversial exchange in which president obama released five prisoners from guantanamo bay. his ordeal began in 2009, prompting a massive rescue operation which had life altering consequences for those who looked for him. a specialist lost full use of his hand when a grenade hit him on a search mission. >> maybe not a life sentence, but definitely at least ten, 15 years or so. >> in court, bergdahl apologized to those who searched for him, but added words alone can't take away their hurt. >> for "today," nbc news, the pentagon. new york city police are gearing up for a busy weekend.

tomorrow, tens of thousands of runners will take to the streets for the new york city marathon. there will be an increased police presence less than a week after a man rammed his truck into bikers and pedestrians, killing eight people. morgan radford is live with more on that. morgan, good morning. >> craig, good morning. these concrete barriers placed throughout lower manhattan are a physical reminder of the aftermath of this week's attack, but for some the emotional aftermath is just as powerful, especially after a series of threats against the muslim community. this morning a community on edge. after threats were reported by a new jersey islamic center near the home of sayfullo saipov, the suspect in this week's terror attack. >> he was saying a lot of, like, we're going to kill you, what do you want to do to us, and he said a lot of really vulgar things and i was very much taken back by it. >> we haven't had anything of

this nature before. >> paterson, new jersey, is one of the largest muslim populations in the country, also where two of the september 11th hijackers rented an apartment. now many in the muslim community there feel unwarranted retaliation. >> enough is enough. we cannot be seen going out because of an action of one person. >> survivors of this week's attack also speaking out. noah salts was taken to the hospital after the attacker's truck was plowed into his school bus. >> really loud banging sound on the bus. i started to cry. >> of the eight who died, five were from argentina. meanwhile, federal law enforcement officials are combing through the suspect's iphone for clues, and even looking into a wedding he attended. while police in new york are setting up hundreds of concrete barriers to prevent future attacks. and metal barricades for sunday's marathon. >> you will see a lot of police presence. i think more and more people are

not alarmed by that. they understand it means they are safe. >> but as runners gear up for the road ahead, another community is also trying to move forward. >> stay strong to my faith and stay strong in my belief in humanity and let that surpass everything else. >> one of the new jersey victims who died in that attack is having his wake held today. this as police set up more police presence and are on high alert ahead of tomorrow's marathon, which kicks off at 8:30 in the morning. >> morgan, thank you. some other headlines this morning. newly released government documents reveal an alleged connection between lee harvey oswald and the cia was, quote, totally unfounded. a cia memo from 1975 says a thorough search was conducted to see whether oswald had been used by that agency in any way. they came up with nothing. bmw is recalling more than a million of its luxury cars and suvs because of a fire risk

under the hood. the risk is low, but recommends parking outside until the repairs are made. according to bmw, the heater and wiring for the heating and air conditioning systems can overheat, causing the valve and connectors to melt. repairs are expected to start mid-december. and it was a much deserved victory parade for the houston astros friday after bringing home their first ever world series title against the l.a. dodgers. look at this crowd. hundreds of thousands of fans cheered them on as the champions travelled through downtown houston, celebrating under a ton of confetti. president trump congratulated the astros on twitter following their big win. the team hasn't decided if they'll visit the white house, if invited by the president. >> good to see a city that's had to deal with so much. time now for a check of the weather and for that we head out to metlife stadium. dave price is in for dylan, there for a special preview of the macy's thanksgiving day

parade. hey, buddy. >> hey, guys. you know what? we call this balloon fest, macy's balloon fest, and 100 of our closest friends are out here in the chilly parking lot of metlife stadium this morning getting ready, inflating four new balloons. these are test flights to get ready for the parade. there's olaf, you see olaf right there. olaf actually glistens, and chase is right behind me over there. we're going to inflate these, take to the air, and show you the whole process and all that goes into making these balloons make magic on thanksgiving. in the meantime, though, let's take a look at the weather picture, see what's happening all across the country. to the maps we go. as you can see, some sloppy weather in the pacific northwest and heading through and over the rockies, cascades, and into the sierra. as we take a look at the midwest, two low pressure systems are coming together, that's going to bring messy

weather rommilling through. watch for isolated storms to begin to develop through the day today and into tomorrow. severe storms are possible through the midwest. just keep that in mind. and, of course, the marathon takes place on sunday with temperatures which should be climbing into the 60s with some scattered showers, but watching the situation, of course, in the midwest, as well. with that said good morning. we've got a couple of showers moving through, specifically for the north bay, the san francisco area. definitely seeing a couple of those cells and as we continue with the next couple of hours, expect to keep the rain chances at least through mid afternoon, and then that should taper off nicely, moving towards parts of the south bay by about 12:00, 1:00. ending at about 3:00 to 4:00. right now, the temperatures remain on the cooler side in santa rosa at 52 degrees, napa, 57, san jose, 59.

good saturday morning. it is 5:26. here's a live look outside. foggy skies as we look over san francisco. we saw some rain coming down this morning. hopefully you're warm at home. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at that microclimate forecast and you say the rain is going to stop? >> yeah, it is. we've got to get through these next couple of hours because overnight we saw a good amount of rainfall in terms of the north bay and of course the san francisco area. this is what the radar looked like about two hours ago when that cold front really started to sweep in. if i kind of fast forward, this is what it looked like an hour ago, so you could see some pockets of showers, but it's going to be periods of on and off again rain, so don't expect continuous rain, and then within the last 45 minutes, the areas

near south san francisco, san mateo, still seeing some rain, hayward also still seeing some rain and also near the oakland area as well. so definitely expect to keep the showers at least through the mid afternoon and then we see a little bit of a change in that doppler radar. we see the rain kind of make its exit but it doesn't make its exit completely and that's because we're still expecting another round of showers as we head into sunday. i will break down all the details coming up during the 7 anl hour. but keep that umbrella in hand. >> good to know, vianey. thank you. well, look at that. a heated meeting shut down and then moved. the topic? giving san francisco police officers conducted energy devices, ceds, more commonly known as tasers. the confrontational conversation unfolded at san francisco city hall last night. after hours of debate and r disruption, there was a resolution. commissioners voted to approve

tasers for officers. people who lined up to speak against the proposal shut down the meeting. before the meeting, chief bill scott made a case that tasers would help officers. while supervisor sandra lee fewer disagreed, saying the weapon does kill and will open up the city to liability. >> they should not be used on pregnant women, older individuals, people with heart conditions, mentally ill people, et cetera. how will a police officer know before they discharge a taser? >> commissioners eventually moved their meeting to a different room, only allowing five speakers in at a time while a rowdy crowd demanded access to the meeting. the approval doesn't go into effect until december of 2018. in the meantime, the draft policy will be refined. san jose police have arrested 20-year-old arturo huerto. he's accused of hitting an officer with his car.

tha that could result in an arrest after another actress came forward accusing him of an arrest. and netflix says it is cutting its ties with "house of cards" star kevin spacey. steve patterson is following it for us this morning. good to see you. >> good morning to you. there are now 87 women alleging some level of sexual wrongdoing involving harvey weinstein. we spoke to the attorney representing an actress he believes has the best possible case that could lead to an arrest. this morning investigators say they're closing in. >> we have an actual case here. >> nypd detectives say a rape allegation made against harvey weinstein is credible and that police are gathering more evidence that could lead to an arrest. >> if this person was still in new york, and it was recent, we would go right away and make the arrest. no doubt. >> reporter: authorities say the case is being belt on interviews

with actress paz de la huerta. thursday the star accused weinstein of raping her twice. she said both instances happened in 2010 at her manhattan apartment about a month apart. it was disgusting, she said. he's like a pig. he raped me. day la ha >> at this point there's a considerable amount of evidence to support all of the story that's being told. >> the manhattan district attorney's office says a senior sex crimes prosecutor is assigned to this investigation but won't comment further. >> they're going to try and corroborate the victim's statement. they're going to try and look for evidence to get them over that threshold probable cause. >> she is now one of 87 women with accusations ranging from sexual harassment to rape over decades of allegations against weinstein. nbc news has also confirmed

active investigations in los angeles and london. weinstein has denied any allegations of nonconsensual sex. also in london metropolitan police investigating a 2008 sexual assault. british media are reporting it involves kevin spacey. although nbc news can't confirm that information. spacey, who used to help run a london theater, most recently played president frank underwood on netflix hit show "house of cards." spacey facing a number of sexual harassment allegations. late friday netflix announced it was cutting ties with spacey saying in a statement netflix will not be involved with any further production of "house of cards" that includes kevin spacey. they have also canceled production on the film "gore" which he produced and starred in. his career now appears to be in jeopardy. >> spacey's representative said the actor is, quote, taking the necessary time to seek

evaluation and treatment. >> steve, thank you. let's head back out to metlife stadium in new jersey for another check of the weather from dave price. >> you know, guys, you really don't understand all that goes on, all that's involved in getting the macy's thanksgiving day parade going until you see these people, this sea of about 100 people getting everything ready. four new floats. we have jet from super wings you see right there. it's just waking up right now. of course we have the grinch just behind that coming to life as we speak. there are 5,000 people, macy's employees, friends and family, and 8,000 people who are actually in the parade including the band and everything. all of this tradition dates back to 1924. we're going to show you more about that process in just a little while. in the meantime, let's take a look at the weather all around the country. we are talking about some

temperatures which are on the warm side. well above average as we take a look at sections of texas. 87 degrees in an angelo. 15 above norm in little rock. tallahassee 84 degrees. even denver 70. tomorrow dallas will be at 90. new orleans at 82. 70 in d.c. to start off sunday. then we'll begin to cool off as we head into next week. temperatures dropping almost 20 degrees as we head t we're definitely off to a wet and cool start across parts of the bay area. overnight, we saw that cold front move in, and we have seen a couple of hours already push their way through since last night. we saw this kind of band of showers make its way through san francisco, parts of the north bay, right now, though, the oakland area, still seeing some

the deadline. it's december 15th this year. that's really what you need to know. it's not going to extend into january as it has in previous years. you can see height rear the deadline is december 15th. the website is actually down for maintenance, the federal website on sunday. so if you're signing up not on a state exchange but on a federal exchange, from 12:00 noon to 12:00 midnight it is shut down. >> that's every sunday? >> every single sunday. >> they still have the layout of the four plans, the platinum, gold, silver, bronze plus catastrophic. it's harder to compare. take it plan by plan. >> you've got the catastrophic plan. that is for people who are under the age of 30 and you probably won't be using much health care and you see that it's a very high deductible and there is no tax credit. then you also have the bronze plan which we want to show you. president trump actually aloulod for the author z insurers.

it is the lowest premium but if you need more care and don't want to upgrade, you get the expanded bronze plan. the silver plan is the most common plan. covers 70% of your medical costs but overall the silver plan, since president trump came into office is actually up 37%. but it depends on which state you live in. in alaska it's actually down by 22% 22%. in iowa costs are up by 88%. >> why do some choose platinum. >> platinum is good. that's if you're using a lot more health care in your daily life and you want to avoid that big bill come later. there's a lot of options. you still can comparison shop which is good. but you have to make sure you're doing it before december 15th. that really is a big one. also i want to tell you that january you used to be able to make changes on your plans. you can no longer do that. but obamacare has not been repealed. it is still available december

and also for the east bay as well, 57 degrees. now, if we look at the radar right now, this is actually within the past hour, you notice san francisco not really getting much rain. san jose also not getting much rain. but the fremont/oakland area can expect to keep at least a bit of the wet roads through the morning hours, and i'll talk more about what you can expect heading into tonight and how long the rain will be sticking around. also that sierra snow, tons of it. >> crazy. it's just like winter. >> first winter storm season. >> vianey, thanks. well, that is a heated meeting that was shut down and then moved. the topic was giving san francisco police officers conducted energy devices, ceds, more commonly known as tasers. the confrontational conversation unfolded at san francisco city hall last night after hours of debate and disruption. there was a resolution. commissioners voted 4-3 to

approve tasers for officers. people who lined up to speak against tasers shut down the meeting. before that interruption, chief bill scott made a case to commissioners that tasers would help officers achieve the department's deescalation of force goals. while supervisor sandra lee fewer disagreed, saying the weapon kills and will open up the city to liability. >> they should not be used on pregnant women, older individuals, people with heart conditions, mentally ill people, et cetera. how will a police officer know before they discharge a taser? >> commissioners eventually moved their meeting to a different room. only allowing five speakers in at a time. the rowdy crowd demanded access to the meeting. by the way, this approval doesn't go into effect until december of 2018. in the meantime, a draft policy will be refined. san jose police have arrested 20-year-old arturo huerta-cabrera. he's accused of hitting an officer with his car. it happened last week near the 680 onramp.

san jose police say the officer pulled over huerta-cabrera for reckless driving. before he hit the officer and drove away. that officer is expected to recover. well, coming up this morning on "today in the bay," a vta rider arrested for taking pictures of a teenage girl on a bus. we'll tell you why police fear that it wasn't the first time he did that. we'll have that plus all your top stories and weather coming up in a half an hour at 7:00. we hope you join us. in the meantime, we will send you back to "the today show."

. this morning on today's food, a hearty fall dish to keep you warm. this is the author of the cook book "kaukasis." good to have you. let's start with the ingredients. what goes into this? >> essentially it's a chicken cooked with some either pork or lamp fat and loads of vegetables. we've got chilies, apples, some seasonal squash and some bread to soak up the dishes. >> a lot i folks get intimidated by taking the backbone out. >> it's so easy. grab kitchen scissors or a knife and cut along the backbone and squash it down. two simple movements. here we've got a little bit of

lard. you can use lamp fat if you've got it around. you put it in the oven, release the fat and then basically we've just got our chicken which you put on top. basically we just want all the fats, the chicken fat and the pork fat to join together. then this happens and it's so delicious delicious. it seasons all of the vegetables around it. >> these are the best vegetables i've had ever. >> because you started eating before we even started this segment. it's just a little salt, little pepper. >> yes. do season it really well. we've got red onions. we're got a few types of squash. you can use butter nut squash. we're going a little bit fancy today. >> the actual wading of the kitchen, what does that do? >> we've got an nbc sign. >> we like the peacock squash.

i didn't know how to use my windshield wipers. it was a whole new thing. >> you're definitely going to want to keep an umbrella handy because we're going to get periods of on and off again showers before it tapers off completely so keep that in mind so. the roads might still be a little bit wet. so please be safe out there. 59 degrees for the south bay right now. 51 degrees, nice and cool and then as i mentioned, if you noticed in the icon, we've got a couple of showers. well, that's because we are expecting another round of showers to make its way through at 8:00, 9:00 a.m. and that's going to bring more rain for san francisco, the peninsula again, the east bay and san jose has a chance of seeing rain through the afternoon. east bay right now is at 57 degrees and here's a look right now at the doppler radar. you can see san francisco's out of the kind of the range in terms of the rain band right there, and fremont will still expect to see some showers there as well. san jose not really seeing too much rain right now, but we're not in the clear. we also saw some showers move in
