"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm phillip mena. >> and i'm gigi stone woods. an ending more is how the cover of one newspaper reads this morning after 26 innocent lives were lost and ten others wounded in sutherland springs just southeast of san antonio following a deadly rampage when a lone gunman walked into a church during sunday service, dressed intact cal gear, and used an automatic assault rifle to shoot parishioners. the suspected attacker, 26-year-old devin patrick kelley, was later found dead himself. his victims range in age from 5 to 72 years old. even the church's pastor's teen daughter among the dead. it is a tragedy that is devastating the small town of sutherland springs in the nation in what has become the deadliest shooting at a place of worship in u.s. history and the worst mass shooting for the state of texas. >> and thorning we are learning a lot more about the suspected

gunman including his military past. to more on this we go to nbc's justice correspondent, pete williams. pete? >> reporter: philip, texas authorities with the help of fbi and atf are trying to find out why this happened. no idea yet, they say. several officials tell us they see no obvious connection at this point to international terrorism. some answers may come from a search of the home of devin patrick kelley, the man law enforcement officials tell us was the gunman. he lived in the rural area of comal texas, 35 miles from sutherland springs. people in the tiny town say he had relatives there, but authorities are only now beginning to look into his background. no criminal record, just traffic offenses. he served in the air force and was apparently dishonorably discharged. law enforce. officials say he fired an ar-assault type rifle. the question where did he get it. it is illegal for anybody

dishonorably discharged from the military to have a gun. philip? >> many questions to be answered. pete, thank you. president trump condemning the attack while in japan. dismissing any talk the tragedy in aztetexas is a, quote, guns situation. >> i think mental health is your problem here. this was a very based on preliminary reports, very deranged individual, a lot of problems over a long period of time. we have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries, but this isn't a guns situation. i mean, we could go into it, but it's a little bit soon to go into it. this is a mental health problem at the highest level. it's a very, very sad event. it is -- these are great people and a very, very sad event. >> still this morning sutherland springs continues to mourn as the small town reels from a catastrophe that has become commonplace across this country. for more we go to nbc's mariana atencio who is on the ground in texas.

mariana? >> reporter: philip, the first baptist church here in sutherland springs is a place of worship. you can see it behind me. it's a place where innocent people came to pray on what seemed like a regular sunday. it is now a place where there is an active crime scene, a place where 26 people lost their lives. and today, just as we are learning about the suspected shooter, devin kelley, we are also learning about the victims. among them, the daughter of pastor frank pomeroy, annabel, 14 years old. this is a statement that her mother sherri pomeroy shared with nbc news. she said, my husband and i were ironically out of town in two different states. we lost our 14-year-old daughter today and many friends. neither of us have made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. i'm at the charlotte airport trying to get home as soon as i

can. sherry right there, philip, she talks about the devastation, the devastation that not only the families of these 26 people who died are feeling right now in this tight-knit community, but also of the 20 or so people who are injured. we do know at this point that ten of those injured are at university hospital in san antonio, eight at brook army medical center, the trauma center in san antonio. one is stable at connolly memorial medical center where three have been released and four have been transferred elsewhere. we know the victims range ages 5 to 72, and just as we are hearing about those who passed away, we are hearing about those who survived. we are hearing about 5-year-old rye landward. his aunt just confirmed to nbc news he was shot five times, but he is out of surgery and stable. so, stories of resilience and heart break as we are learning more about the victims and the shooter here on the ground in texas. back to you. >> certainly many more stories will emerge today. mariana, thank you. >> president trump is in japan

today, the first of five countries he'll visit on a 12-day tour of asia. this morning the president met with japanese business leaders. commenting on the touchy subject of trade, calling for a more equitable deal. >> right now our trade with japan is not fair and it's not open. we want free and reciprocal trade, but right now our trade with japan is not free and it's not reciprocal. >> the president is also meeting with prime minister shinzo abe to discuss another urgent issue, north korea. nbc kelly o'donnell joins us live from tokyo. kelly, what else have we learned from the president as part of this trip? good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. tonight here in tokyo, the president and prime minister are sharing a dinner together, a state dinner in president trump's honor where there was some lighter conversation. shinzo abe, the prime minister, talking about their golf diplomacy there, shared passion for golf and how they have used

that to build a relationship that goes on to much bigger topics like trade and north korea. on that sensitive subject, president trump is saying that he wants to see japan do more and they will be buying more u.s. military equipment as a deterrent, of course, japan could be most vulnerable when north korea tests ballistic missiles or its nuclear threats. president trump notably did not repeat some of the harsher, more provocative rhetoric toward kim jong-un that we've seen in the past. he showed some restraint here in tokyo. >> the era of strategic patience is over. some people said that my rhetoric is very strong, but look what's happened with very weak rhetoric over the last 25 years. look where we are right now. >> reporter: the prime minister introduced president trump to

several japanese families who have missing loved ones who were kidnapped and are held in captivity in north korea, a much more personal connection for president trump to understand that that could be a point of leverage on kim jong-un, urging them to be released by the regime in north korea as a show of good faith at a time when both the president and the prime minister say military options must remain open. philip, gigi? >> a complicated problem. kelly, thank you. >> senator rand paul is recovering this morning from five broken ribs after a neighbor assaulted him at his kentucky home on friday. according to a criminal complaint, the senator told police that rene boucher came into his property and tackled him from behind, forcing him to the ground. boucher was arrested and charged with fourth degree assault. he is in considerable pain and remains unclear when he will return to work. >> california residents are facing sticker shock over soaring marijuana taxes. when the state recreational

lot of people dreamed of watching this iconic win. it is so touching. >> a lot of people just dream of finishing the race at this point. it is so much more impressive. she did get the bronze medal. it's not like she's an amateur. that was nine years ago. she's a 36-year-old woman doing that. amazing. >> by three seconds. that boost of adrenaline. >> leading the news this morning nbc exclusive reporting on the russia investigation with our nbc reporters learning federal investigators have gathered enough evidence to bring charges in their investigation of donald trump's former national security advisor michael flynn. and his son as part of their probe into russia's meddling in the 2016 election. flynn, who only served 24 days as nsa, was one of the first trump associates to come under scrutiny in the russia investigation and now he may serve as the linchpin in mueller's intensifying probe. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker has more.

>> reporter: the legal vice may be tightening on michael flynn. multiple sources familiar with the investigation tell nbc news federal investigators have gathered enough evidence to bring charges in their investigation of flynn and his son michael g. flynn. the elder flynn was fired after just 24 days on the job for lying about his contacts with the russian ambassador. mr. trump has downplayed any connections between flynn and russia. >> i do think he's a fine man. >> reporter: under scrutiny, flynn was paid nearly $34,000 to speak at a 2015 moscow gala, and seen sitting next to the russian president vladimir putin while he was informally advising the trump cal pain. sources indicate special counsel robert mueller is zeroing in on flynn's lobby work and whether he laundered money or lied about overseas contacts and whether flynn attempted to orchestrate i the removal of a chief rival of

u.s. flynn's son who worked on the trump campaign and briefly on the transition could also face charges. >> if michael flynn, the elder michael flynn were to cooperate with investigators that could both save his son and potentially limit any consequence he himself faces. >> reporter: it's the latest chapter in the russia probe and comes after indictments last week of trump's former campaign chair paul manafort and his deputy rick gates. also unveiled former trump volunteer campaign advisor george papadopoulos pled guilty to lying to the fbi about contacts with russian officials. mr. trump insisting friday -- >> all i can tell you is this. there was no collusion. >> reporter: house speaker paul ryan urged everyone to let the investigation play out. >> we need to let these career professionals do their jobs, see it through. so, no, i don't think he should be stepping down. i don't think he should be fired. and the president made clear he's not going to do that. >> our thanks to kristen welker for that report. >> just ahead, a new scam warning for netflix users.

this morning local and federal investigators are pouring over evidence in sutherland springs, texas in what is now become the deadliest mass shooting in a place of worship in u.s. history. headlines across the country capturing the devastation, as investigators zero in on the now deceased suspect. 26-year-old devin p. kelley, his newly disclosed records show the suspected attacker was previously a member of the u.s. air force until his discharge after being court martialed in 2012 for assault on his spouse. >> in the end he received a bad conduct discharge, confinement for a year, and a demotion. but what, if any role, did this play in the shooting? for more on this we go to nbc's jay gray who is on the ground in sutherland springs. jay. >> reporter: hey, philip, gigi.

let's talk about what happened overnight. here we know that police searched not only kelley's car, but his home as well. they are looking into his online history, any type of digital footprint he may have, and they're just searching for the answers as to how and why this happened. that's what's driving the investigation at this point. they haven't said anything publicly about a possible motive as they continue to try and piece together evidence. not only at those two locations, but of course here at the scene where there is an abundance of law enforcement on the ground, not only police and state police, but federal agents as well trying to work through the investigation here. overnight, very rough for this small community of less than 500, as you would imagine. everyone here either knows someone who was involved in the attack or has friends or relatives who know someone. so, they are struggling as well as they now begin the day after the tragic attack here, philip
