>> he was a hard worker. a very, very good man. >> as they cope with one of the worst mass shootings in u.s. history. today, monday, november 6th, 2017. >> from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today," texas church shooting. with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. we start this show the way we've started way too many shows in the past, trying to get answers to another act of unspeakable violence. >> hard to believe it happened again. we want to get to the latest overnight. as we mentioned, at least 26 people were killed, 20 others wounded. and the youngest victim was just 5 years old. >> also dead the gunman identified as 26-year-old devin kelley. police said he was dressed in black tactical-style gear and

armed with an assault rifle. he opened fire outside of the first baptist church near san antonio then went inside and turned that weapon on specting . >> investigators are poring through his background. he served in the air force. he was court-martialed on domestic violence violence charges, eventually given a bad conduct discharge. >> we have complete coverage, including new information on the search for a motive. the victims and the heroes who chased after this shooter. let's start with national correspondent craig melvin, who is on the scene. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. a short time ago the shall have here confirmed there was a relationship between the church behind me and the shooter. we are told now that the parents of the shooter's ex-wife worshipped here. they were not at church yesterday, but they do worship at first baptist church. we also learned a short time ago that between 12 and 14 of the dead are children. eight of those killed from the

same family. overnight, the quiet town of sutherland springs, texas, trying to come to grips with the nation's latest horrific mass shooting. more than two dozen people were killed during sunday's services that the small baptist church. the victims ranging in age from 5 to 72 years old. law enforcement officials tell nbc news the shooter was 26-year-old devin patrick kelley, dressed all in black, wearing tactical gear, and armed with a ruger ar rifle. he started firing outside the church and then entered the building, opening fire on parishioner ins. >> as his exited the church, a local resident grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect. >> reporter: after being confronted, kelley dropped his weapon and ran. police found him dead in his car from a gunshot wound although it's not clear if he took his own life or was taken down by that local citizen. one of the men who tracked down

that alleged killer is johnnie langendorff. >> they said there was a shooting, i pursued and just did what i thought was the right thing. >> reporter: a former member of the u.s. air force, kelley received a bad conduct discharge in 2014. and in 2012, he was court-martialed for assaulting his spouse and their child. for now, his motive in sunday's mass shooting remains a mystery. outside the church, witnesses and loved ones embracing, describing the devastating scene. one woman telling msnbc four of her grandchildren were inside when the shots rang out. >> my son said there were bodies on top of bodies and they were having to move the bodies to see if anybody else underneath was alive or breathing or anything. >> reporter: among the dead, 14-year-old annabelle pomeroy, the adoptive daughter of the church's pastor, who have out of town. frank pomeroy is normally behind the pulpit. >> we serve a god that is greater than any normality we think we know. >> reporter: his sermons on

youtube. now in the wake of the tragedy, residents in this tiny texas town are coming together. >> we started praying for everyone involved in it. >> reporter: on an overseas trip, president trump was briefed on the incident, speaking from japan overnight. >> all of america is praying to god to help the wounded and the families of the victims. we will never ever leave their side. >> reporter: in a separate news conference overseas with japan's prime minister shinzo abe, president trump said what happened here in texas isn't about guns. this is about mental health. i asked the sheriff about that sentiment. he agreed. he did not think -- he does not think that this is an issue of guns. meanwhile, they are going to continue to pore over the shooter's social media accounts. guy, back to you. >> thank you very much. >> justice correspondent pete williams, you have been talking to your sources. what are you learning about a possible motive? >> they said they don't yet

know. they haven't found any obvious connection to international terrorism. he did have relatives in that community. overnight, the police and federal agents searched the home of devin kelley, about 35 miles away from the church. they are hoping that search, an examination of the social media, interview with friends and relatives could provide the answer, but of course it may want. we don't know why stephen paddock shot all those people in las vegas a month ago. >> hearing something about devin kelley's military record. what else do we know about his past that may provide clues? >> reporter: it, didn't appear he had serious brushes with police, just traffic offenses. the circumstances of how he left the military will be a big factor here. the air force says he received a bad conduct discharge. if that's the case, he would still be legally qualified to have the semiautomatic weapon he used in the attack. if it was for domestic violence, which apparently it was, that would have disqualified him.

how he got it will be important. investigators say he bought the gun locally. matt? savannah? >> thank you very much. >> joined by albert gamez jr., commissioner wilson county, texas. he's joining us on the phone. good morning. >> good morning. >> let me start by saying i'm so sorry for what's happened in your community. we still know so little about why this happened and about any motive and why this target was chosen. do you or has anyone you talked to ever heard the name devin kelley before? >> no, sir. condolence to all the families. and pray for all their family. you know, we lost a lot of people in the community. and also, thanks for support of the first responders and the law enforcement. >> i know, commissioner gamez,

it was taking some time to for authorities to identify these victims and notify the family, and it must have been so agonizing for people waiting for word of their loved one ps. to your knowledge, has everyone been notified now? >> not at my knowledge right now. i think only a few of them have been notified that i know of. >> commissioner gamez, trying to figure out why this target. was this church noun noen outside of your small community? were there people in other parts of the state that were aware of this first baptist church? >> not that i'm aware of. it's a small -- it's a small town. almost in every town, we have small churches like this. i mean, really, just for the community. that's all. a small real church, probably 100 people, or 75 that fits in there. >> i'm sure you're talking to local police officials that are so consumed with this investigation.

have you heard any word as to what they think may have caused this, what the motive possibly could be? >> no motive at all. that's the question for w. trying to figuring out what was the motive and why that little church there. i mean, out in the middle of nowhere. i mean, why target that church? >> you talk about your small community. i assume it's safe to say that everyone in that town knows one or many or perhaps all of the people who were the victims of of this shooting. >> right. i mean, everybody got a connection to that church and everybody knows -- i mean, it's almost like a family -- a family town. anywhere you go, i mean, everybody recognizes everybody. >> we know that family is aching right now. commissioner gamez, we send you our love. we're so sorry for what you and your community are going through. thank you for being with us this morning. >> thank you. >> he says that little church in

problem at the highest level. i want's very, very sad event. >> reporter: asked if gun control is the answer. >> this isn't a guns situation. i mean, we could go into it, but it's a little bit soon to go in into it, but fortunately somebody else had a gun that was shooting in the opposite direction. >> reporter: hi aed of his next stop in seoul, president trump defending his fiery warnings toward north korea. >> some said that my rhetoric is very strong. but look what's happened with very weak rhetoric over the last 25 years. >> reporter: as for the defense of allies in the region, the president proposing the japanese protect themselves from north korean missiles. >> he will shoot them out of the sky when he completes the purchase of lots of additional military equipment from the united states. >> reporter: president trump ad-libbing an attempt of humor, after reading prepared remarks, praising the japanese economy. >> i don't know if it's as good as ours. i think not. okay?

and we're going to try to keep it that way. >> reporter: a state dinner capping this two-day visit. the president and first lady, paying respects to the japanese emperor and empress. later, mr. trump feeding asian carp at a fish pond. tossing spoon fulls of fish food, then following the prime minister and emptying the entire box. a face-to-face meeting with vladimir putin early next week in vietnam, the president is facing a widening russia investigation back home. multiple sources familiar with the probe tell nbc news federal investigators now have enough evidence to bring charges in their investigation of mr. trump's former national security adviser, michael flynn, and his son, michael flynn jr. investigators zeroing in on the elder flynn's lobbying work, including whether he laundered money or lied to federal agents about his overseas contacts. >> it's a classic move for a prosecutor to ensnare somebody's child in an investigation, to use that as leverage, to try to get the principal person to cooperate in the investigation.

>> reporter: the president's attorney declining to comment. also under scrutiny this morning, commerce secretary wilbur ross. new documents show he may have misled congress during his confirmation process about his connections to a company owned by wealthy russians including vladimir putin's son-in-law. in a statement, the commerce department said, secretary ross has never seeked or received any ethics exception. he works closely to ensure the highest ethical standards. back to today's news conference, president trump appeared to offer north korea an exit ramp, from the to nuclear showdown, saying if kim jong-un's regime released abducted japanese citizens the u.s. would view that as a tremendous signal, in his words. back to you. >> peter alexander traveling with the president. thank you very much. a lot to get to including the former interim chairwoman of the democratic national committee. she says critics who want to keep her quiet about the 2016

primary can, quote, go to hell. donna brazile says the clinton campaign waged a secret take over of the dnc months before they defeated bernie sanders for the nomination. the campaign had a fund-raising agreement that let secretary clinton control the finances before she had the nomination in hand. this weekend members of the clinton campaign signed an open letter to donna brazile, disputing her portrayal of what took place. she also talked about clinton stumbling at the 9/11 memorial. she considered trying to replace her on the ticket with vice president joe biden. however, on sunday's "meet the press," current dnc chairman said the charge that hillary clinton was somehow incapacitated is ludicrous. let us say good morning to mr. roker. eerily warm out there this morning. >> it is. that warmth extends down into the gulf coast. we have strong storms along this cold front. parts of illinois, where you can

see torrential downpours. as the system moves to the east, it caused massive flooding in erie, pennsylvania, unfortunately two people losing their lives in a flooded home. the wet weather continues. as it moves to the east, it's starting to weaken. that's good news. we're looking at more showers and thunderstorms from new england, all the way down into western tennessee. look for this front to push on through. severe thunderstorms and heavy rain through new england. it will clear the northeast coast by evening. but tomorrow, it lingers down through the south, with pockets of storms, heavy rain. lighter amounts from new england into the mid mississippi river valley. you get to the south, anywhere from 1 to 3 inches for tennessee and north carolina. that's what's going on around the country. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds. or painted in luxurious strokes. and in rare cases... both.

a police officer trades wloe belows with a female fan during an altercation in miami. police investigate the officer's behavior. monday, november 6th, 2017. >> difficult video to watch there. >> we want to get more on this tragic shooting in texas. gabe gutierrez is at the first baptist church in sutherland springs with more on how the victims lost their lives. >> reporter: good morning. the victims range in age from 5 years old to 72. in this small town, it seems everyone knew someone inside that church. in a place of a population of just 700 people, 26 of them are now gone. this morning, deep in the heart of texas, heartbreak. the loss is staggering. >> it's hard to hear that people you know were hurt that bad. and some of them died. >> we can still believe and have faith with them.

>> reporter: among the victims, 14-year-old annabelle pomeroy, the adoptive daughter of pastor frank pomeroy and his wife, cherry. >> always smiling. always friendly to anybody. didn't matter who you were. someone she just met, she acted like she knew them and she was their best friend. >> reporter: sandy ward's granddaughter emily was gravely wound ld. her grandson shot five times. overnight as mourners shed tears at a vigil, loved ones waited to hear about the unaccounted for. >> i'm his only daughter. >> reporter: this woman said her father was at the church. she hasn't heard from him since the massacre. >> you know, i got all the attention. i was spoiled. he was a hard worker. avery, very good man. >> reporter: another woman who attended the church her whole life said she knew most of the victims. her own life could have been spared because she overslept. >> why? >> reporter: that question, why,

hangs heavy here. some of the gunman's bullets struck kevin's home nearby. >> why would you do this to people like that? that are just praying. they're just worshiping. why would you attack them on something -- on a sunday, when they're defenseless? >> reporter: despite the shock, there's also defiance. >> we're really tight. we're either friends of friends or friends of family. i mean, different towns come to this one church. even if you don't go there, you know everybody that does. the guy only brought us closer by doing this. >> reporter: it's heartbreaking. "the washington post" citing a phone conversation that a great grandparent reports that eight members of one extended family were killed. 20 people were wounded. they were taken to local hospitals. no word on their conditions this morning. back to you. >> it's unbelievable. thank you very much. we turn to kathleen carno, who lives across the street from that church.

good morning to you. thank you for being with us. i am sure you know many of the people who lost their lives yesterday. so we send our deepest condolences. can you tell me what you saw? >> my apologies. there was a vehicle going by. can you repeat that? >> i was just saying we were sending our condolences because i'm v we're sure you lost friends yesterday. i wonder if you can tell us what you saw. >> my husband and i were in our bedroom. we got home about 30 minutes before the shooting started. and we were needing to do some chores outside. and we were finding a good excuse not to go do them. we were talking about our options for the day. and i heard approximately four to five -- what i thought were firecrackers. i looked at my husband. i said, you know, really, firecrackers? it's sunday. thinking maybe kiddos were playing pranks. and my husband looked out the bedroom window that faces the church and said, there's a shooter at the church.

his cell phone was nearest me. i grabbed it. i called 911. my husband was relaying information to me and i'm trying to get on the other side of the house. it was -- you know, i've been raised around guns all my life and i was not ever prepared to just hear that. i kept trying to pull my husband back. and he was trying to get me on the other side of the house. we're looking. my husband saw the shooter go up and approach the church and shoot the outside of the church, which makes like an "l." he walked back to his vehicle and he appeared to get something out. and i looked out the window. and i couldn't -- i couldn't watch it. and so, at that point, i made a call to a friend of mine who is a wilson county sheriff. and i'm telling her what's happening. and my husband would not come away from the window. and he was just focused on keeping an eye on the shooter, what was happening for law enforcement.

>> kathleen, can i interrupt you? did your husband see the shooter go into the church? and did you hear the gunshots continue after that? >> he did. yes. the shooter walked back into the church. you know, i was calling for my husband. and i'm on the other side of the house and i hear the shots get further apart but louder. i run immediately back to the front of the house where he was at, and he informed me that a neighbor was outside, in our driveway, exchanging gunfire with the shooter who was across at the church. i told my husband, if that's him, you need to get down. you know, there was damage to our vehicles and our house. that's by no means an issue. for it to be that close to home, immediately after that, the shooter got in his vehicle, obviously spooked by the gunfire from the neighbor, and he sped off through a busy intersection down. and the neighbor ran across the

intersection to another vehicle that was -- had witnessed it. everybody saw mr. johnnie langendorff in the black vehicle and they followed him, gave chase. my husband, at that point, we felt it was okay to go outside. there were people running late to the church. 11:17, 11:20, people were driving up. a few other neighbors were out. they heard what was happening. they came outside. we were trying to keep people away from the church. we didn't want to contaminate the scene. more importantly, i didn't want anybody coming up to the church seeing their loved ones like that. i didn't want people coming up to see their loved ones like that. my husband went to the church to render aid. he's a strong man. but he turned around, came back. he said, i can't do it. >> kathleen, let me ask you. i know it's a tight knit community. did you have a lot of friends in the church on that day? >> this church, i've lived across the street approximately 12 years.

i've lived in this area probably 25 years total in my life. and some of the people in the church were, you know, people that their parents, i went to school with. their parents were friends with my parents. you may not know somebody directly but you know. annabelle pomeroy, she would come to the house. they would always invite to the fall festival. this community pulls together. it doesn't matter your race, what you do for a livings, male, female, your religion, your ethnicity. if you need something, we come together. that's how it's always been. they brought out a little girl to me, the first responders. and they asked me, can you keep her here, just for a few minutes while they try and assess what's going on. it was horrific. >> i cannot imagine all that you saw and what the community is going through. we send our love and our prayers. we appreciate you sharing your

time with us this morning. >> thanks, kathleen. >> thank you. let's switch gears and go over to mr. roker, a check of the weather. >> the front that's bringing the showers and the thunderstorms to the northeast and the southeast, bringing a big change in the weather. ahead of the front, we could see record highs from new york city, raleigh, atlanta, houston. 10 to 15 degrees above average. behind the front, a plunge. billings will be only 20 degrees today. mims, 11 degrees below average at 35. this week, temperatures could drop anywhere from 10 to 30 degrees in one day, from denver, amarillo, san antonio and back into memphis, with temperatures falling anywhere from 65 on monday, down to 55 on wednesday. that's what's going on around the country. good morning. we are starting to see the skies clearing around the bay area. it's going to be a cool day after a chilly start. expect a high in san francisco, 59 degrees and 53 in palo alto. mostly low to mid-60s for the inland valleys.

children to senior citizens. >> this will be a long suffering morning for those in pain. >> reporter: law enforcement officials tell nbc news, the shooter is 26-year-old devin patrick kelley. police say kelley, a former member of the air force, discharged for bad conduct in 2014, was wearing tactical gear and carrying a ruger a.r. rifle. he fired shots outside the church before entering the facility and opening fire on unsuspecting worshipers. according to officials, kelley fled the scene and was pursued by two locals, one of them, johnnie langendorff, ran him off the road and held him at gunpoint until police arrived. >> i did what i thought was the right thing. >> reporter: kelley was found dead by his vehicle said authorities. police say it's not clear if he took his own life. nbc news reports that kelley's motive remains unknown.

united states military who was dishonorably discharged. he seemed to have a troubled past, even before he enlisted in the united states military. there's information surfacing there may have been a reason why this particular location was targeted. that information may be coming out today or tomorrow in the coming days. but i don't think this was a random act of shooting. a randomly chosen location. but obviously, someone who was very deranged. >> i don't want to jump ahead of the investigation. but can you give us any further information on that? are you -- was he related to someone in there? did he hold a grudge against somebody inside the church? >> you know, savannah, i really don't want to share that information because it's important for law enforcement to be able to follow up all potential leads and gather the information they want. if i were to release information, it could compromise their investigation. >> not to go further down that road, governor, but we have also

heard there was an exchange of gunfire between the gunman and the neighbor who came out to try to do something. are you aware if the gunman died of a self-inflicted news or as a result of the gun exchange with the good samaritan in the neighborhood? >> matt, what i'm told is that the gunfire from the neighbor, the sit z the citizen of sutherland springs, did shoot and did connect in his shot with the assailant here. and then, obviously, the assailant dropped his gun, got into his car and drove off. he was chased by the citizens of sutherland springs. and during the chase, the assailant swerved off and basically died at that time. we don't know whether or not his death was caused by the gunshot that was inflicted by the neighbor or was it a self-inflicted gunshot. >> one of the questions is how this guy got a gun in the first place. we know he was dishonorably discharged from the military,

for domestic violence allegations. why do you think he was able to purchase a gun in the first place? >> it's interesting. we know some additional information, and that is before he purchased this gun, he did seek to get a right to carry permit in the state of texas and was denied that permit in the state of texas. after that, he was able to buy this gun. under federal law, someone who is dishonorably discharged, as this person was, is not authorized to be able to buy a gun. so there's ongoing information that needs to be gathered to find out exactly why and how this gun purchase was consummated. but this is all the type of thing that happens here in just the hours in the aftermath of a shooting like this. there's a lot of questions. and there's a bevy of law enforcement working to provide answers to all of those questions. >> governor, we appreciate what you are able to tell us about the investigation.

the worst in history. 26 people dead and now authorities saying 30 injured. let's join freeman martin with the texas department of public safety. >> we know during that pursuit the suspect used his cell phone to notify his father that he had been showed and didn't think he was going to make it. subsequently he shot himself. so as i said, the pathologist will determine the cause and manner of his death. we can confirm the suspect did not have a license to carry. the suspect did have a noncommissioned unarmed private security license similar to a security guard at a concert type situation. there were no disqualifiers entered into the national crime information center database that the preclude him from receiving a private security license. private security background

checks including fingerprints and criminal history checks with texas crime information center and national crime information center databases were checked and he was clear. i can tell you there is video recording from inside the church that has been secured. we have viewed the video. the crime scene investigation will do on for days. all the bodies have been removed from the church. our victims will be autopsied at the medical examiner's office. as i said, our suspect was autopsied this morning in travis county. that information will be forthcoming. we know you have a lot of questions. we'll answer what we can. to start off with i think we're going to special agent in charge of atf to answer questions he can answer. his assistance to this investigation, the suspect and

his purchase of the firearms. >> my name is fred milanowski. i'm in charge of atf houston field division. first and foremost our hearts do out to the citizens of this community and the victims' families. it is obviously tragic for all of us. what i can confirm, there was three firearms that had been recovered. one was ruger 566 rifle we recovered at the scene of the church. two additional handguns were recovered from the vehicle of the suspect. one was a glock 9 millimeter and one was a ruger 22. i can confirm all three of these firearms were purchased by the deceased suspect. there's been a lot of information in the media and question about the discharge of this individual from the military. what i will tell you right now,

domestic situation going on within this family. the suspect's mother-in-law attended this church. we know that he had made threatening texts from him. we can't go into details about that domestic situation that is continuing to be vetted and thoroughly investigated. we want to get that out there that this was not racially motivated. it wasn't over religious beliefs. there was a domestic situation with the family and in-laws. next the wilson county district attorney aubrey lewis would like to say something. >> good morning. we've learned this morning just how small town america truly is. we've had a tremendous outpouring across the country for people wanting to assist our families in need. i want to make sure that everyone knows how they can help because everyone can help. you can help by praying for these families and their loved

ones. first and foremost. everyone can do that. the other thing is you can help tess families financially. so we are working and in the process of setting up two bank accounts. the sutherland springs community association has a bank account through commerce bank in stockdale that will be accepting monetary donations on behalf of the families. in addition to that, wells fargo will have an account as well set up for the victims of sutherland springs. that will be available for anyone to help what we do not need at this point are canned goods and nonperishable items for the families. if you want a way to help, it's through prayer and it's through financial donations. so we appreciate you guys sharing that information, and we are very grateful for this country and just the tremendous outpouring of support that these families are starting to receive. we want to make sure that everybody knows how they can help. so thank you all very much.

[ inaudible question ] >> all right. we've been listening to authorities in texas talking about this mass shooting at a church yesterday morning. >> without getting into detail, the subject -- >> just pausing for a moment to see what they are saying there. that was the press conference going on in texas about a shooting at a church. justice correspondent pete williams in our washington bureau. he's been listening with them. pete, it sounded like the headline to me was this was a domestic dispute. >> no question about it. that's where it's been looking since last night. the fbi on the record saying no sign of terrorism. one big question here, kate, was he legally entitled to buy these weapons. we know he bought the assault rifle he used in the attack last year at a san antonio taker gun

dealer, but was there something in his military record, the assault conviction and the fact he got a general court-martial, military equivalent of a felony, was that reported into the system that would have been used when the background check was done when he bought the gun. if so, would those be disqualifying. the air force trying to answer that question, fbi trying to answer that question, and so is atf. that's one big question here. should he have been able to pie this gun or would his military record have disqualified him, kate. >> we're getting an update, pete, on the victims. we said 26 deceased. i misspoke earlier. twenty injured. among those injured, 18-month-old is the range up to 77 years old. pete, on the weapons, they just mentioned at the end of the press conference that four weapons were purchased, two in texas, two in colorado. >> right. we believe that the assault rifle was one that was bought in texas in san antonio area.

as a matter of fact the gun dealer had said as much. >> let me go to craig melvin on the scene with us in texas. craig, the magnitude of this is so hard to process, especially when i give the range of ages starting with a baby, 18-month-old. what is the community doing to try to cope? >> well, here is what also compounds that grief, kate. this is a very tiny texas town. we're talking roughly 500 people. literally everyone in this town knew someone inside that church. also among the dead, the sheriff tell me a short time ago of the 26 deceased, up to 14 of them are children, eight of them are from the same family. this is a tragedy of epic proportions in a town that's, again, very small, 30 miles southeast of san antonio, kate. >> one thing we haven't touched on, craig, is the heroes in that town who pursued the gunman.

tell us that part of the story. >> i spoke to one gentleman, his name is johnnie langendorff. he was walking out of the gas station. he told me he saw a guy who just shot up the church. another guy who had a rifle with him hopped in his car and said follow that guy. he just shot up the church. they gave chase. as you heard in the news conference, law enforcement officials here are crediting those two gentlemen with likely subduing the suspect. >> craig melvin on the ground. we'll continue to follow this story all throughout the day. we'll break in when necessary. lester holt in sutherland believe only your president and believe only the people who are in power. don't believe these people out in the press. this is a fundamental american trait and value. to understand the press is not perfect, we're going to make our mistakes.

we're back, now, at 8:40, with "pink power today." and i sat down with women, who are in the midst of breast cancer, having chemo, surgery, and losing their hair. you would think that that story would be very depressing. and they have an inner light that shines through. it's the day you walk in the door and the doctor tells you, that your life has forever changed. >> i found the lump myself, after a routine mammogram, so i was healthy. >> i thought that it was a cyst. i couldn't have breast cancer. >> i walked into that appointment all by myself because nothing was supposed to be wrong. >> he said, you see all this white stuff? that's cancer. and he said, it already spread to your liver and ribs.

>> two days before his 1st birthday, i had a double mastectomy. right now, i'm 2 1/2 weeks out from that. and i'll have radiation in a couple weeks. ♪ >> reporter: when talking to your children, i'm curious, how do you? or how did you? >> so, my 8-year-old knew something was up. and i said, what's the matter? she said, i'm scared that you have cancer. i said, what does that mean? she said, it means you're going to get sick and you're going to die. and i said, is mommy a fighter? and she said, yes. and i said, does mommy like to lose? no. is mommy a positive person? yes. those are all the things that we're going to use to fight this. >> when i was diagnosed, my daughter was 20.

and she said, i'm going to have a nervous breakdown. i said, no, you're not. you better get it together because mommy got it together. ♪ >> i got to tell you. the positivity in here is something that is palpable. how is it that you lead with that positivity? >> there's always something to smile about every day. even on the hard days, there's something to smile about. the other day i put jeans on by myself after -- and i was doing a little dance. i got my jeans on. >> reporter: by the way, that's huge. >> that's huge, right? >> that's huge. >> reporter: when you look in the mirror at yourself, there you are. what do you see? >> i see what shines from the inside. i miss my hair. i miss my chest. but i'm still here. and i don't look at what i don't have. i look at what i have. >> reporter: sheila, you chose to remain bald. >> i wanted to empower other women. i think it's bold.

one thing in common. and i said, what's that? he said, they're still here. oh. >> i want women to know that you're stronger than you think you are. >> i'm a fighter. and everyone can be. >> pay attention. and just because you are in your 20s or your 30s, you think breast cancer happens to older women, it doesn't have to. it's not an excuse to die or give up. you have sheila who gets treatment every month. kiara had treatment wednesday. brittany is 2 1/2 weeks from surgery. had treatment yesterday. and here we are. life doesn't stop. live your life. i want to live. >> that's beautiful. >> wow. >> oh, my gosh, the design. >> oh, wow. >> wow, cool.
