tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  November 9, 2017 6:00am-7:01am PST

6:00 am
star will open next friday. >> sounds like a road trip is in the future. 6:00 right now. breaking news, a destructive fire ripping through a south bay home overnight, extensive damage being left behind and the reason a firefighter has hospitalized. reducing traffic on one of the south bay's busiest freeways. and the rain moving out but the roads still wet this morning, we're tracking what is left of the latest storm to hit the bay area and when we could see another round. "today in the bay" continues right now. really came down overnight. good morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. i think we all saw the effects this morning as we were driving to work, wet ground, wet roadways and it's going to come back. >> off and on. we are not going to see the heavy rain we had overnight but we will at times see the spotty showers. if you have the nbc bay area app you will be able to track the rain as it moves in.
6:01 am
here is a look at the radar right now, we still see a lot of green here so mostly in the south county it's clear, san jose, this is moving off towards the east so not moving into san jose but morgan hill still getting a pretty good pure of rain. as we move over towards the east bay moving away from oakland, lafayette, clayton as well as san ramone seeing the rain moving through this morning. palo alto seeing wet weather, mainly light showers and this is what we will see once again, some spotty activity throughout the day. mike is tracking the wet roads and that commute recovering through san rafael. recovering because the earlier incidents have cleared from the roadway and in fact cleared from the shoulder as well in the last couple of minutes, southbound 101 heading toward lincoln all four lanes moving well. that stall as well as the crash have cleared from the area. there should be quick recovery because the travel times show just 14 minutes now so over the last few minutes we have seen speeds come back up. you are only delayed three more
6:02 am
minutes. around the curves and highway 37 down towards the cut over toward the richmond side. green highlighted across the bay, east bay shows where that rain has come through, watch concord and walnut creek for the build. there may be a fender-bender around university. i will see what chp has as they scan the area. a smooth drive for the south bay. a little build for 87, i will also check that out. >> we will check back with you. 6:02. we keep following breaking news this morning out of the south bay, take a look, a very active scene remains after a house went up in flames in gilroy. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live at the scene, it happened on broadway in the center of gilroy not too far from monterey to explain what neighbors say they saw and heard when the fire broke out. >> reporter: firefighters are only now more than three hours after they got here rolling up their hoses. they just stopped putting water on this home, but neighbors say
6:03 am
it's no wonder that they needed this kind of firepower to fight this fire. it sounded like an explosion, they say, the neighbors tell us. the house here is decimated, the flames were so intent firefighters were forced into a defensive position from the moment that they got here fighting the fire from the outside. firefighters told us because of the intensity of the flames and the amount of the material outside they could not get into that home to fight the fire. we did talk with a neighbor and the way that he describes the fire it sounds like a miracle that the two people that live here got out safely. >> we were dead asleep and it sounded like two cannon shots went off and that's what woke us up and we woke up and just happened to peek out the window and saw the house on the corner over here off anna just engulfed in flames with all the -- and then all of the fire trucks zooming in to pull in. >> reporter: we talked with
6:04 am
gilroy fire who could not confirm whether or not there was in fact an explosion. one firefighter did suffer dehydration but is expected to be okay. firefighters, again, were putting water on to the home up until the last few moments and they say they will remain out here for at least five more hours. two power lines came down on the backside of the home so the power in this area was shut down as a precaution. we don't know if this home had smoke detectors that were working and if that's how the residents were able to get out but it's never a waste of time to remember to test the ones in your time. in gilroy, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 6:04 now. the chp is trying to figure out if wet roads played a part in a deadly crash that closed all lanes of northbound 101 in the north bay. this happened a little after 10:00 last night. chp says that a big rig struck the center divide and caught fire. the exact cause of that crash is not known. within the last 90 minutes all lanes reopened.
6:05 am
people from small towns across south central texas are still trying to make sense of a senseless tragedy. last night thousands from nearby towns gathered at a high school stadium in floresville, texas, about five miles from the sutherland springs church where 26 people died in a rampage during sunday services. vice president mike pence attended last night's memorial. many took comfort in his words. >> and i offer the condolences of the american people to all of those affected by the horrific attack that took place just three days ago. >> earlier in the day the vice president met with most of the 20 church goers injured in the shooting. he also proclaimed next tuesday a day of prayer across texas. the escaped inmates are still on the run and investigators are offering a $25,000 reward for any information. the two men escaped from the palo alto courthouse earlier this week. tramel mcclough and john bivins are still on the loose but their

6:08 am
performing tonight for this concert but the more important part is that all of the money, all of the ticket sales, 100% of the ticket sales will go towards relief efforts. i will get to who they will be working with as far as the benefit group in that instance, but as far as the names of the artists that will be, you will have metallica performing, g-eazy, dave matthews, dead and company, transit and raphael saadiq. a number of the artists have local ties. the relief fund is through the san francisco based nonprofit tipping point. they have raised more than 100 million $for low income communities dating back to 2005 and have already raised millions of dollars when they come to the north bay wildfires. some of the organizations they will be working with include the red wood community fund, community foundation of sonoma county, napa valley community foundation and catholic charities of santa rosa. they plan to disburse all of the funds by it 2018 but that benefit concert to help folks affected will start at 6:00 p.m.
