take a live look outside -- cloudy and foggy sj good sunday morning to you. it is 7:00, rise and shine a. live look outside z, cloudy and spotty over san jose. it's a good morning to be warm inside, isn't it. the only problem is, we always talk about the studio isn't very warm. >> doesn't help us. >> doesn't help us. >> if you are joining us from your living room, i hope you have a nice cup of coffee. not expecting a lot of rain in the forecast, for now. for now, i literally mean a couple hours. the north bay could be seeing a couple showers early tonight. right now, the temperatures, as we mentioned, in the 40s in some spots. san jose, 48 degrees. san francisco, 52.

santa rosa, 48 degrees. as far as the fog goes, yesterday, we woke up to really dense fog. santa rosa, napa, concord and other areas are seeing dense fog. overall, it is patchy compared to what it was yesterday. we are expecting to see some cloud cover in spots. we are a few degrees cooler in areas much like we were yesterday. the temperatures are expected to climb to the upper 50s, lower 60s, but yes, the chance of possibly seeing rain as we head into later tonight. i will break down exactly what to expect in terms of the time line. we have another storm that should be making its arrival to the middle of next week. i'll have all the details in 15 minutes. >> we'll stay tuned. thanks. a massive crackdown where police are boosting their presence this holiday weekend. officers are trying to stop those illegal side shows that

shut down streets and freeways. this was 102nd street and international boulevard where police broke up a side show. they launched a task force after seeing social media posts. police made their own post in an attempt to stop drivers from participating. >> once they get stopped by police, send out their messages and tweets saying, we are serious, don't come to this area. why come in the first place? >> no word, yet, on how many arrest nor how many cars were impounded last night. in san francisco, a veterans day celebration that will impact traffic today. 20,000 people are expected for the 97th annual parade near fisherman's wharf. we have where it will start and end and other celebrations on our website, www.nbcbayarea.com. remembering america's heroes.

a solemn ceremony yesterday morning at the uss san francisco memorial. it's been 75 years since sailors lost their lives on board this ship during the battle, a turning poupt in world war ii. marine and navy officers gathered to ring the bell for the 107 who died on the "uss san francisco" that day. san jose held a veteran day celebration across the bay area yesterday. there was a gold star memorial to honor the fallen as well as military hardware. one veteran of the vietnam war, the equipment brought back memories. but, he says, it was the thank yous that really touched his heart. >> it's been a long time coming where now it's been exposed more often and the people are saying to you, thank you for your services. it really hits home. we didn't get that parade when we head home.

>> the event included musical performances with patriotic songs. in an emotional veterans day message, steph curry calls for people to stop criticizing national anthem protests and on doing something for veterans. we have more on curry's bold stance. >> reporter: a thought provoking piece written by one of the most popular athletes in the world. in it, steph curry says instead of focusing on controversy, he'll now use his status to draw attention to the real-life issues facing military veterans. >> trying to cut through all that noise and make sure through my voice and my platform that the conversation is around how we can help people, how we can change our society for the better. >> reporter: homelessness, unemployment, health care and mental health treatment have to be addressed.

to read it go to www.nbcbayarea.com and the link is on the home page. president trump has arrived in philippines today after he left vietnam. it will be his final stop on his tour of asia. but, it is the russia investigation that is once again the focus after controversial comments to reporters on board air force 1. the president said he is done confronting russian president vladimir putin about his country's meddling in the 2016 campaign after more denials from putin. trump dismissed the interference as a democratic hit job and called his political chief hacks. he backed away saying he now does believe u.s. intelligence agencies which have concluded that russia did meddle in these elections. he went on to call for international cooperation. >> i think it's very important to get along with russia, to get along with china, to get along

morning, taking a live look at the transamerica pyramid. you can hardly see the golden gate bridge covered with clouds. vianey arana will be along in a bit to tell us if you have veterans day plans continued this weekend. today, the rain will hold off. it will be a good day to get out. yet, another actress is speaking out against sexual harassment. rebel wilson says she was harassed by a male star, who she did not name, but was in a position of power. one incident happened while his male friends laughed and tried to film it on their phones. later, she was told by that actor's representative to be nice and supportive of the male star. instead, she told her story to as many people as she could to warn of that man. early in her career, she had an uncomfortable hotel room encounter with a top director.

now to roy moore, who is doubling down against not just democrats, but his own party. moore is facing a growing fire about sexual misconduct with teenagers years ago. moore did not answer questions from reporters. instead, he blasted the report and his accusers. >> they are desperate. this is -- this article is the prime example of fake news to think grown women would wait 40 years to come before, right before an election to bring charges is absolutely unbelievable. >> several republicans have pulled their support of moore and his critics are calling for him to come out of the race. it's too late to remove his name from the ballot before the election next month. it is almost 7:12.

welcome back. it is 7:14 on your sunday morning. cloudy skies over the golden gate bridge. beautiful on this sunday. light traffic there. vianey arana will be along in a bit to tell us cool and dry today, but changes are on the way as early as tonight. a scary situation in san diego. this is the scene after a stairwell collapsed at an indoor gym. at least 20 children were hurt. this happened around 8:00 last night.

three or four of the victims may have suffered spinal injuries and were taken to the hospital. our sister station in san diego spoke with some of the kids who got out safely. >> a crash, then it crashed down. you heard people screaming when it came down. >> i went through a couple times. >> are you going to go back? >> no. >> investigators are trying to find out what made the stairwell collapse. they specialize in core training where they knave gait difficult obstacle courses. visitors at disneyland came down with legionnaires disease. nine patients contracted the disease two months ago. it is spread from contaminated water. a disneyland spokesperson said they shut down cooling centers to rid the water of bacteria. three other people who didn't visit the park came down with the disease.

they are investigating the source of that outbreak. thousands lost it all in the north bay wildfires and lost all forms of transportation, not just cars, but bicycles. for a lot of kids, it was a crushing blow on top of everything else they lost. yesterday, the southern marin fire district spearheaded the effort to give fire if i gets bicycles and helmets. they assembled new bikes and repaired used ones and gave out 540 bicycles thanks to donors and community effort. >> we are overwhelmed with the response. amazing. we are happy to be able to do it. obviously, a lot of people have been affected by the fire. if we can make a little difference in their life, we are happy to do it. >> anyone interested in helping, go look hem up on gofundme or facebook. folks can drop off gently used bikes at any fire station.

rock and roll hall of famer benefited this concert. only 200 pickets were on sale for the concert. get this. each ticket cost $10,000. they brought in $1.2 million for fire victim relief. on thursday, you may recall the massive bay area benefit at at&t park raised 17 million for fire victims. great news there. let's check in with vianey arana with a look at when we might see rain. >> again. >> yeah, again. >> now, here it comes again. at least we are at fall temperatures. you get what you ask for, then

you are like, wait. >> wait, did i really want this fall weather? >> exactly. in the peninsula, we are seeing a combination of sun and clouds at 51 degrees. it's cool in the south bay, actually 48 degrees. 45 degrees in the tri-valley. tri-valley looking nice and clear. in san francisco, we are seeing a little of that cloud cover, which is typical and we are seeing patchy fog in areas in the north bay. 48 degrees right now. the north bay, east bay, 50 degrees. but, if you look at the coastal fog map right now, you can see the majority of that fog is sitting over the north bay. napa, santa rosa, hayward, li r livermore, expect to see the fog. be careful. when there's fog, expect limited visibility. not enough to slow down the rest of traffic. go with the flow. the highs for today, another great fall day where we'll see

peaks of sunshine. the temperature will remain in the low 60s. mid-60s for some spots. livermore, 66. concord, 66. oakland, 64. san francisco is going to work really hard today to inch its way up to 58-59 mark. hopefully, 60-61 by midday. let's talk about that rain. i have been telling you, we are expecting dry days toods. then we are expecting rain. what is the time line? the reason i have been saying today is going to be nice is because we are going to hold off on the rain until late in the day. the time bar here, 10:30 p.m., we see rain on the radar. look how far north it is. so, it's going to stay pretty far north in the santa rosa area. santa rosa and napa, see the rain early on. for the most part, it stays mostly dry. the overnight, early morning hours. we are talking 12:00, 1:00, 2:00 a.m. into the 7:00 a.m. hour. right around the time you get

ready for work, rain picking up near the san rafael area with pockets of moderate to heavy downpours. as we inch forward by 3:00, 4:00 p.m., the rain moves south of the golden gate bridge. the rain is expected to stick to the north. by 6:00, look at this. a nice band of rain that brings pockets of rain to oakland, san francisco, half-moon bay and san jose might get a good chance of seeing rain. monday is very much a day of periods of on and off rain. rain at times through monday. later portion of that night, we see the rain system moving out. now, on tuesday, we get a chance to recover from the rain. as we head into wednesday, we have an additional system moving in. that's going to bring a better chance of seeing more rain in the bay area by the midweek. the rain will move in, stick around through thursday. as we head into next weekend, another system coming in. a couple changes on the way.

boy, i love that, sunshine and darkness in the background. thank you for joining us. vianey arana has a look at the microclimate forecast and what the day will look like today. >> i know a lot of people, when they see the dark clouds, it means rain. typically, it does. i want to remind you, even though we are not expecting that rain in san francisco and the remainder of the golden gate bridge, we are expecting rain late tonight into the north bay. overall, as you wake up this morning, 48 degrees in the south bay. peninsula, 48 degrees. 52 in san francisco. we can expect to keep the majority of those clouds through most of the day. partly clear, then peeks of sunshine for the afternoon. the overall high is fall-like. 66 for concord. oakland, 64. a high of 67 in san jose. then, we are tracking a very

the paris climate agreement. al gore was also there. they are all trying to rally the u.s. and the word to help fight climate change. >> take some of that noise, bottle it into energy and commitment to get the job done. america, we are here. we are in and we are not going away. >> earlier this year, president trump said withdrawaling from the agreement is both in america's economic interest and won't matter much to the climate. they have drawn strong opposition in the past, but at times turned to violent clashes. members of the patriot prayer marched in berkeley. they rallied an hour and marched through the city. at times, it got loud as they spoke up. there were no clashes. >> adversity over the last year to help people understand violence isn't the answer. there's a lot of hatred in the

city and intolerance. i think, if they support trump, they support all his policies, they support this white nationalism. >> police monitored the situation all day, but no word of any arrests. >> the north bay fires might be out now, but the concern remains, can this happen again? critics sacral fire is the state's largest fire department that is great on putting out fires, but not great in preventing them. >> our investigation untangled a web of what experpts say falls short to make a difference. extreme weather, rotting freeze and the clock is ticking on the next disaster. you are looking at the forest in the central sierra. a stunning landscape from the air. but, a powder keg down below.

>> fire wants to burn up hill. >> they are learning how to save these wild lands by setting fire to them. >> our goal is not to eliminate fire from the landscape. they have been that way for thousands of years. >> he says california forest used to burn all the time. before scientists started doing research -- we are looking at fire prevention. >> it is. >> he runs the science lab. they are studying ways to make forests less fire resistant. >> this is the third time they have set fire to this exact spot of land. they say burns like this need to happen more often in more places. >> to do this and really make a difference in the landscape, we have to do it on a much bigger area. that's what worries us.

we are not doing it. we are not close. >> why? >> we don't have a lot of experience doing it. you have to train a work force. >> reporter: that is a challenge. fire prevention is divvied up among a number of agencies. nonprofits like the fire council fill in the gap. >> we clear this area down here, which was really thick with that dead vegetation. >> reporter: they have a two mile rake in the mountains. the area faces the same danger as the sonoma county communities that burned to the ground last month. cal fire is responsible for protecting that neighborhood in santa clara county. the agency oversees a third of the land in the state. that's why forest economics expert says cal fire should take the lead on an aggressive prevention program. he says they are not equipped to do it. >> basically a fire department.

>> reporter: he said the agency made some progress, but scientists and staffers need to coordinate a state-wide effort. >> that's not really what they are designed to do, yet they are dragged into it. we are working to change the paradigm to put more time and energy into preventing fire. >> one of cal fire's deputy directors. he says the agency spoke on the space inspections, clearance and prescribed burns. critics say, it's not enough. their perspective is cal fire should be setting the tone, from the top, we need to start work on big forest projects. that would have trickled down. >> the last couple years, the director set high goals for firefighters to do more in fire prevention and more with prescribed burning. >> reporter: in the memo, the agency fell short of the goals, meaning 70% of the prescribed

fire target. should they advocate to the government for more resources, more funds to do the important work your agency acknowledged needs to happen? >> the administration and the legislature have invested more money into doing fire prevention work. >> reporter: cal fire received a $200 million windfall from sacramento. the agency spends 75 million bucks on fire prevention each year. that's just 4% of the total budget. meanwhile, scientists working in the forest hope their new techniques for mitigating megafire become a priority. >> it's something that gets more traction every year, but doesn't get out of the gate. >> reporter: cal fire signed an agreement to increase the pace and scale of controlled burns and they grant money to local fire departments and counsel. forces agree, it's going to take an extra push from lawmakers to

predictable is the unpredictable. we were reminded of that lesson last week in th in politics, the only thing predictable is the unpredictable. we were reminded of that lesson last week in a special election senate race in alabama. roy moor, the republican nominee to replace jeff sessions was accused by four women of dating three underaged teenagers and sexually molesting a 14-year-old. what are the alabama voters and the american public to make of this a month before the run off against democrat doug jones?

to help answer that, we have larry here. first, what do we make of the timing? let's start there. >> you know, timing is never right. it's never right in a situation like this where these women must have known their 40-year-old allegations would be questioned sooner or later. in this case, much sooner. but we need to understand how this all unfolded. according to "the washington post," which conducted the investigation, the issue arose during the senate primary election a few weeks ago. that's when reporters heard about these allegations. they interviewed more than 30 women who chad different elements. the four women involved didn't know each other. why is all of this information important? because it explains the timing of the article as well as the accuracy of the report. there's no messing around here. >> so, for alabama voters, you

would think this must be painful. moore is a former supreme court justice, history of strong evangelical support. what will those people do now? it is contrary to their beliefs? >> that's a good question. republicans, evangelicals, it's like corn flakes, whatever, just eat it up. democrats are practically an endangered species there. alabama voters face the unthinkable, to vote for moore in spite of the allegations or jones. all of this comes, remember, in the aftermath of the robert bentley who resigned earlier as a result of his own sex scandal. it's bad. >> overwhelming to think of all that. as we know, the republicans control the u.s. senate with a two-seat majority, which somehow

they have already failed to pass health care reform. how do they manage this crisis now? how do they band together? >> you don't want to be a senate republican right now. they really are between a rock and a hard place. you know, on one hand, by refusing to condemn roy moore, many critics will view republicans as the party that gives cover to a child molester. it could harm their prospects in the 2018 election. it will remind them how they gave a pass to donald trump over his behavior as seen in the infamous 2005 sex tape. on the other hand, if republicans speak out against moore, they face the prospect of losing that senate race, which reduces their majority to just one and imperil the effort to pass tax reform. that is important because of the republican inability to pass any meaningful legislation despite

majorities in both chambers of congress and control of the presidency. republicans have nowhere to go. >> there are so many things i want to ask you. let's try to consolidate this. obviously, it's not just a republican issue and not just alabama. >> not at all. democrats dominated california legislature is in the midst of its own turmoil on similar issues. over the past decade, the legislature received 31 allegations of sexual harassment with most of the cases never seeing the light of day. some victims have been fired after bringing charges. others settled for pay offs. more than $1 million. plenty of dirt to go around, unfortunately. >> it's disturbing. what is the take away now? >> you know, whether it's the power of adult over a child or the power of a legislature over an employee, we seem to be in an

good morning. it's 7:53. it's sunday, my favorite day of the week. if you are watching uls from home, stay inside. it is chilly. 48 degrees in the south bay. cool 51 for the peninsula. tri-valley, at 45 degrees. san francisco, we are seeing dark clouds rolling in. 52 degrees right now. although, we are seeing dark clouds. we are not expecting rain for the entire bay area today. really, it's going to stay dry frr the majority of the day. we are not expecting rain to

move in. the highs for today, concord, 56, antioch, 55. livermore, 66 and oakland 64. the coastline, upper 50s and 60 degrees for san francisco. now, let's talk about that rain. so, if we look at the time bar up there, we can see this is kind of showing by 10:30, we have this system moving in. it's going to start bringing rain in as early as 10:00 from santa rosa, then starts moving down further in napa. spotty on and off overnight to monday morning. for the rest of the bay area, if you look at that time line by 1:30, 2:30, 3:00, pushing down south near san rafael, oakland, san francisco and on and off through the entire monday. expect to see periods of on and off again. light to moderate showers at the start of your workweek. it will start moving south of the golden gate bridge to late afternoon. let's talk about the long range

outlook. as we see this system pass through, tuesday, we catch a break from the rain. if you notice, by wednesday, an additional system that will bring a good chance for rain into wednesday and thursday. what that's going to bring is probably a lot of breezy conditions and, yes, rain for the entire bay area, not just the north bay. looking ahead at next weekend, these are still long range outlooks. sunday, if you look, we have an additional system that might be bringing rain as early as saturday night into sunday. that's going to kick up winds, again, to breezy and windy. this is expected to bring a chance to see more snow for the sierra as early as wednesday with the arrival of that system. that's going to bring several inches of snow to several areas in tahoe and the kirkwood area. we have the color up here. you can see the icons bringing in and showing off a lot of snow that's expected to fall. the see area has seen the first

major snowfall of the season. we can only expect to see more. if you are headed to the veterans day parade in san francisco, yesterday, we had one in san jose, expect great conditions. cloudy skies, the temperatures will be nice, 61 degrees by 12:00. 3:00, remains in the 60s. we have the 49ers playing today. the kick off is 1:25. look at this. no clouds in sight. plenty of sunshine. you are going to need a light jacket because temperatures will remain in the 60s. now, over the next seven days, we have several changes on the way. very active weather pattern. we remain in the 60s. the chance of rain comes into play on sunday and wednesday. then, yet again, next saturday. don't put away the umbrellas or the rain boots. definitely keep a lot of jackets around because fall is officially here and so is the rainy season. >> oh, gosh. you know what? you warned us. now i know what to take out of my closet and what i need to buy
