think they did pretty well on the sale. >> we're looking for whoever walked in with real deep pockets. more on that sale in a moment but let's start with our top story. new developments in the roy moore scandal. this morning, four additional women are accusing the embattled senate candidate of making unwanted sexual advances decades ago. the candidate, moore, pushing back ever. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in birmingham for us, good morning. >> savannah, good morning. a total of nine women have come forward with allegations against roy moore ranging from inappropriate flirting to sexual assault. the national republican party has bolted but the alabama gop is sticking by its candidate. this morning, alabama's senate candidate roy moore is facing new allegations of unwanted advances decades ago. overnight the "washington post" publishing the accounts of two more women, gina richardson tells the paper she was a high school senior working at the mall in alabama in 1977 when a

30-year-old moore asked for her number. when she declined, she tells the "post," he called her school a few days later and had her pulled out of math class to the principal's office where he asked her out. days later, she says, that date ended with an unwanted forceful kiss. another woman who worked at the mall, becky gray, then 22, told the "post" moore would linger and she reported moore to her manager when he kept asking her out. this after another woman told al.com moore groped her at his law office in 1991 when she was 28. while moore's campaign hasn't commented specifically on these latest claims, it has called the onslaught of allegations a politically motivated witch-hunt and denied any sexual misconduct. >> judge moore has been falsely accused of things he did not do. >> the campaign blasting another accuser, beverly young nelson, who claims moore signed her high school yearbook shortly before he allegedly assaulted her 40 years ago when she was 16 and he was 30. moore's attorney now says that signature is a forgery and may

have been lifted from a divorce case judge moore provided over. >> release the yearbook so that we can determine is it genuine or is it a fraud? >> gloria allred who represents nelson says her client will release it to an independent expert and testify under oath at a senate hearing if moore does the same. >> reporter: should roy moore resign? though president trump declined to answer questions, his daughter ivanka is weighing in telling the associated press "there's a special place in hell for people who prey on children. i have no reason to doubt the victims' accounts." >> we demanded rightly answers from judge moore, he provided them to the specific questions we asked. >> reporter: a day after he asked moore to clear up inconsistencies, fox news host sean hannity says it's now up to alabama voters. >> we do not care what washington, d.c. thinks or wants us to do. we don't. >> reporter: roy moore is expected to speak at an event with faith leaders later today.

hill to make his final pitch on tax reform to house republicans, this as republican dwrun tunity senate is showing signs of cracks after the repeal of the individual obamacare mandate in their version of tax reform. those in favor of the idea say it will lower the cost of the overall tax package. >> the individual mandate of obamacare is the most unpopular part of obamacare. two-thirds of the american people hate it. >> reporter: but combining health care and taxes may be alienating moderate republicans. they're concerned about projections that suggest the move will result in millions losing their coverage. >> i believe that if we start getting into health care issues with the individual mandate that we send a very mixed message. >> reporter: and wisconsin senator ron johnson becoming the first republican to come out against the bill saying it unfairly benefits large corporations. >> i wouldn't vote for this senate version. bottom line.

>> reporter: overnight mr. trump lashed out at democrats for their opposition tweeting "why are democrats fighting massive tax cuts for the middle-class and business? the reason, obstruction and delay." meanwhile, on wednesday the president put the focus on foreign policy, pushing back against headlines that his 12-day trip to asia was all sizzle and no substance. >> during our travels, this is exactly what the world saw, a strong, proud, and confident america. >> reporter: the president said his trip built up momentum for his key policy goals on trade and north korea. >> to unite the world against north korean nuclear threat and to advance fair and reciprocal economic relations with our trading partners and allies in the region. >> reporter: but it was this awkward moment that lit up social media. the president pausing to take a sip of water. >> they don't have water. that's okay. what?

oh, that's okay. oh. >> reporter: all of it echoing 2013 when senator marco rubio reached for a bottle during his response to the state of the union. candidate trump relished mocking rubio on the campaign trail. >> do you remember that catastrophe? and he's like this, "and we will -- i need water." >> reporter: rubio having fun with all of it tweeting "similar but needs work on his form. has to be done in one single motion and eyes should never leave the camera. but not bad for his first time." a little bit of light hearted fun there. on a much more serious note, the president does have yet to weigh in on embattled senate candidate roy moore. reporters will undoubtedly ask him questions about that matter today on capitol hill. if moore loses and the seat goes to the democratic candidate it would tighten the gop's already very narrow margin in the senate and that would imperil

everything from tax reform to the rest of the gop agenda. matt and savannah? >> kristen, thank you very much. lots more to get to including breaking news overnight in baltimore. a veteran detective fighting for his life after being shot in the head. a manhunt is now under way for the gunman and nbc's tom k costello is on the story. good morning. >> reporter: this happened in west baltimore, a neighborhood that for years has been racked by violence. a veteran detective at baltimore's shock trauma medical center and police are still searching for the suspect. this morning a manhunt is under way for a gunman who shot and gravely wounded a baltimore homicide detective wednesday. investigators say he was engaging a homicide when he observed the shooter in suspicious behavior. the suspect shot the detective in his head. >> he was just doing his job on behalf of this city. >> reporter: police have not released the name of the detective but say he is an

18-year veteran of the force, a husband and father of two. >> this is a dangerous job, police officers know that at any given time they can confront someone who wants to do them harm and that's what happened tonight. >> reporter: the attack was the second shooting of a law enforcement officer in west baltimore this month and it comes amid a wave of violencvio. more than 300 homicides this year in baltimore, the third year in a row the number has been that high. >> enough is enough. crime has to come to an end. this kind of violence cannot be tolerated and to have one of our own out there trying to protect the citizens of our city, to be gunned down like this is just unacceptable. >> reporter: as police cordoned off streets in west baltimore, tactical units combed alleyways when helicopters buzzed in the skylighting up the streets below with search lights looking for the shooter. >> my best guest s is there's me than one other person who is aware that this callous coward with a gun in his hand shot a

cop in the head tonight. we're going to identify him, we're going to arrest him, we're going to ensure that justice is done. >> reporter: the mayor of baltimore says violence in the city is out of control, blasting prosecutors and judges for allowing repeat offenders back on the streets. more than a dozen people have been shot, many killed in that section of west baltimore in recent years, including an off duty d.c. police officer killed just 12 days ago. guys? >> all right, tom, thank you. >> we turn now to yet another college campus rocked by the death of a fraternity pledge. the latest incident at texas state university. now police are investigating and that school is suspending all greek life activities. nbc's blake mccoy has more on that. good morning. >> matt, good morning. police in texas expect alcohol played a role in this student's death. now they want to know how much he drank, did anyone force him to drink as part of hazing and who, if anyone, should be held

responsible for his death. >> reporter: texas state university grieving the loss of one of their own, hundreds attending a solemn candlelight vigil overnight to remember classmate matthew ellis. the 20-year-old business major dying after attending a fraternity party off campus. police suspect alcohol was involved and are now investigating whether criminal charges should be filed. >> reporter: we're waiting for toxicology to come back, doing follow-up interviews and trying to bring it together. >> reporter: but the university is not waiting, suspending all fraternity and sorority activities on campus. >> i think what we're trying to do here is kind of push the pause button on activities so we can look at things. >> reporter: it's a disturbing trend. this year alone, fraternity hazing and alcohol are suspected in three other campus deaths. 19-year-old timothy piazza, pledging beta theta pi at penn state died after a party. more than two dozen fraternity

member there is now facing charges for their alleged involvement. 18-year-old maxwell gruver, a pledge at louisiana state's five delta theta died after allegedly being told to drink massive amounts of alcohol. ten people being charged there. and 20-year-old andrew coffey died after a pi ckappa phi part. some in texas say the penalty is too zblars to broadly condemn an entire system of people for the actions of one group seems to me to be overlooking the good that a lot of these organizations do. >> reporter: texas state university insists that suspending greek life on campus is not punishment, as you heard it's about hitting the pause button. toxicology results for matthew ellis should be back in about six weeks. matt and savannah? >> blake, thank you very much. we want to give you an update on the story we told you about on wednesday. the manhunt is over for a dangerous patient who escaped

from a psychiatric hospital in hawaii. officials say a tip from a taxi driver in stockton, california, led to the capture of 59-year-old randall saito. he was found not guilty of a 1979 murder by reason of insanity. he walked out of a louisiana state hospital on sunday, he climbed into a waiting taxi and boarded a charter flight before health department officials had the chance to alert authorities. at least seven hospital employees have been suspended without pay as officials investigate how that patient was able to walk free. and now to the latest on that international incident involving three ucla basketball players arrested for shoplifting in china. they've now apologized publicly but they do still face an uncertain future and the president himself is tweeting about it this morning. today's national correspondent craig melvin is here with that. >> good morning, president trump tweeting just a few moments ago. without taking questions, each player read from prepared statements acknowledging their

crime, thanking china for their graciousness and thanking everyone who helped get them back home, including president trump. the question now -- what happens next? >> it was an extraordinary exercise in public contrition. cody riley, liangelo ball and jalen hill, the three ucla basketball players accused of shoplifting in china one after the another acknowledging and apologizing iffer their actions. >> i take full responsibility for the mistake i have made, shoplifting. >> i'd like to start off by saying sorry from stealing for the stores in china. >> sorry for shoplifting. >> reporter: president trump once again pointing to his role in their release tweeting "do you think the three ucla basketball players will say thank you president trump? they were headed for ten years in jail." and they did, reading from prepared statements, each specifically thanked china, ucla, their families, and president trump for working on their behalf. >> i would also like to thank president trump. >> reporter: for their actions, the players have been suspended from basketball indefinitely.

they will not travel with the team or dress for home games. but the university left the door open for the players' return. >> at some point they may be permitted to join team workouts, practices, and meetings. but that timeline has yet to be determined. >> reporter: ucla also revealed more details about the incident, saying the theft happened during 90 minutes of free time on the first day of the trip. >> it was at that time that they took the items from three of those stores without paying for them. >> reporter: the next day, chinese authorities showed up at the players' hotel and took them into custody. they were held overnight until ucla posted $2,200 bail for their release. of the three players, the highest profile belongs to liangelo, brother to lakers first round draft pick lonzo ball and son of outspoken lavar ball who told "today" last march i will anglo will only play for ucla last year before making an attempt to head to the nba. >> like i tell anybody, all my sons are one and done, i don't

good thursday morning. right now it's 7:00 of a we are in a microclimate weather alert tracking a round of rain moving through the bay area, it's mostly light and scattered but will get a little bit heavier at times and just continuing as we go through the day. right now in san francisco a steady rain coming down, that also extends down the peninsula into the south bay with some lighter showers and for the east bay it's been fairly heavy this morning, but it is tapering off just a bit. we will continue to see this rain rolling by as we head through the rest of the morning. even into the afternoon. the evening commute looks really soggy for areas south of san francisco and the south bay into the south county will still have this rain into late tonight and starting to taper off early tomorrow morning. in the meantime we are looking at rainfall totals at one to three inches all across the bay area. let's check in with mike to see how this is impacting your commute. >> it's slippery so a lot of spinouts early this morning but as speeds come down because more

way across country. especially heavy mountain snows in the pacific northwest and on to northern california. rainy, windy weather will be exiting the northeast in new that's what's going on around the country. here's what's happening in your neck of the woods. >> we'll be in with this rain for several hours as it continues to roll on shore and we will see at times a pocket of some heavy rain. our temperatures today only reaching the upper 50s in san francisco. and rain ending later on tonight. tomorrow's all dry and it looks really nice. also on saturday, but then on sunday, we'll start to see clouds moving in and that will be ahead of the next storm system that will bring us some rain to start out next week. and then that one clears out in time for the busy travel day. ♪ love makes the world go round ♪ the reason we are down here in key west, florida. our final stop on our lend a hand today tour. we are in key west at margaritaville resort here in

key west. of course, as you might imagine, tourism is the number one industry down here in the florida keys. of course, hurricane irma greatly affecting that and people's lives here. but it was first responders and neighbors helping neighbors that actually helped make the keys come back. this is a monster storm. it is not weakening very much. >> we estimate there are about 31,000 people who already evacuated from the keys as of 6:00 p.m. last night. >> the diameter of the storm is much bigger, almost twice as wide as the state of florida itself. >> 25% of the houses initially have been destroyed. 65% have major damage.

basically, every house in the keys was impacted in some way or another. >> the whole house started shaking. felt like an earthquake. >> this is the worst storm that we've ever been through. >> it was just chaotic. we were out helping people and trying to get debris moved out of the roadway so more first responders and assets could come? >> i was thinking about working, helping people, but also at the same time thinking about our house. it looks really bad outside. we had about three boats, two vehicles and a floating dock surrounding our house. as far as the sheriff's office, they put a team together that came and moved everything out of our yard. it was a huge job. i was crying when they texted me the picture, that they came and did that. i didn't know that. >> i went to cudjoe with my parents, in which they were helping people who just suffered there. cudjoe was hit really hard.

this really showed me that i'm really proud to be their daughter. and to have helped all these people. >> there were so many first responders that lost so much and just kept going and helping people. it made us stronger. it made us closer to one another. neighbors got out of their house and met neighbors that they had never met before prior to the storm. now you have stronger communities. >> we want to say a big thank you and lend a hand to all the first responders who were involved. amongst those folks, starting off with the monroe county sheriff's department. the fire and rescue. we have key west fire department. the key west police department. keys energy. florida keys aqueduct authority. last but not least, the florida fish and wildlife conservation commission. so we'd like to talk to a couple of folks.
