we have one last little bit of rain that will just not get out of here. it's moving through quickly. it's just enough to make those roads wet as we look at the radar this morning. one cell that's moved from fremont down 680 and approaching milpitas right now, moving closer to downtown san jose. once that clears, we'll have a dry day. we will have mostly cloudy skies to start and clearing out quickly. cool temperatures this morning. 50 degrees at 7:00, then 61 degrees by the time you pick them up from school or walk them home. it's going to be a nice one. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend coming up. mike is saying that san jose commute is jammed up. >> it is, kari, because of a number of crashes in the south bay that are interacting with each other's back up. the crash at 101 and oakland and the one at mckee cleared the roadway. it's backed up to capital expressway. some folks may have been trying to get over because of the back up and sig-alert at 87.

that crash is active in the middle lane. they cleared one lane, but the middle lane is blocked and jammed. pass by the crowded off ramp. you can take monterey road to avoid both, but i'm sure that's crowded as well. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:01. developing now, people recovering after a massive fire gutted a senior living center near philadelphia. the flames putting 150 people out of their homes. it was 35 miles west of philadelphia. firefighters have not reported deaths, but at least 20 people were injured. residents were forced into the bitter cold and transported away on school buses. witnesses say those flames were massive. >> when i looked out the window, it looked like a sunset. that's how big the blaze was going at that point. >> authorities are looking into the cause of that fire. >> 6:01.

live to washington, d.c., this morning. another big name in politics under scrutiny accused of groping and kissing a female. >> senator franken is apologize zing and agreed to cooperate with the investigation. this is the photo of al franken showing him touching leeann tweeden while she was sleeping. it happened when they were part of a uso tour entertaining troops overseas. >> trap is live with the allegations of sexual conduct. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. al franken says he's sorry and ashamed for what happened. he gave a lengthy statement ability that. tweeden says she accepts that apology. but that may not be the end of it. lawmakers here, are asked to evaluate one of their own. >> you can't put -- >> reporter: senator al franken

could lead to more victims. >> it is really open and could lead to a lot of falsz accusations that harm an innocent person. >> reporter: franken, not innocent, by his own admission, calling his own behavior disgusting. now, a couple things could happen here. if there's an ethics investigation, he could be kicked out of the senate. although, marcus and laura, that's very rare. the last time it happened, the 1860s. >> we will be watching the details on this one. thank you. 6:04. we have new details this morning about the deadly shooting in northern california. police tell nbc news that suspect assembled the weapons himself. kevin neal got around california's top gun laws ordering parts of the rifles separately and putting them together himself. we have been reporting he went on a shooting rampage in tehama reserve, including a stop at an elementary school.

he killed four and hurt ten others. they discovered his wife dead beneath the floor boards of their home. the case is putting the spotlight on so-called ghost guns. they are firearms that don't have serial numbers because the parts o ordered separately. you can order the kits and do it yourself from online. they are not sure if that suspect did that in this case. thursday, a bipartisan group of senators unveiled gun legislation but the bill does not limit self-assembled weapons. 6:05. the police department is named in a civil claim accusing officers of unfairly targeting gay men in a sting operation. undercover operations ask gay men to engage in anonymous sex in public restrooms. in each case, they were charged with misdemeanors. the police ignored similar conduct carried out by straight

people. relief this morning as the frantic search for this black labrador ends in success. the dog named kiwi took off in fear when a dog walker crashed a pickup truck carrying nine canines. >> the dog walker and child were double parked when something caused the park to head downhill. it slammed into a home, popping the cover off the back of the truck and leaving those nine dogs frightened and free to take off. >> the parking brake wasn't on or anything. just went down, hit his prius, smashed into it, then started going down the hill all the way down until it hit right there. >> now, the woman and child did not suffer serious injuries. firefighters called the owners of the dogs who stayed leading to emotional reunions, as you can imagine. all the dogs were eventually accounted for when kiwi was found hiding on a nearby porch.

>> good ole kiwi. a live look where today is considered one of the busiest travel days of the year. people who plan to fly for the thanksgiving holiday weekend, they like to get an earlier start. they want to pack away the good news coming out of this month's air travel numbers from the transportation department. the amount of passengers bumped off flights hit the lowest level since 1995. at the same time, the baggage reports fell to the lowest rates ever, dating back to 1987. on time arrivals were down a bit. hawaiian airlines finished at the top of that category. >> a lot of people will be heading to the sierra. a live look from our caltrans camera. showing the conditionings right now. you can see snow covered ground. >> plenty of snow, in fact, has fallen this week, just in time for several ski resorts to open today. get tlg can be a tough one from

the bay area. a lot of people love to go. kris sanchez is live this morning with some of the items you should smartly pack in your car if you are hitting the roads. >>reporter: right. the local ski shops are going to be busy. the local auto supply stores are going to be busy as well. if you are headed to the sierra or into the thanksgiving week, caltrans says you are going to need chains. if you don't have them, you need to buy them. the storm that had us soaked yesterday and this morning in the south bay was dumping snow on the roads headed to tahoe. the good news, there are a number of resorts opening now. today, heavenly and squaw valley will open. alpine meadows needs a little more time. wednesday, kirkwood is going to open on thanksgiving, north star. the tough news is the snow that

makes the skiing possible means chain requirements. we checked in with caltrans and they are required. it is true for all vehicles, even if you have four-wheel drive and don't have snow tires. if you have four-wheel drive and snow tires you don't need chains. otherwise, everybody else does. coming home, same story. nbc sacramento caught up -- >> it's inconvenient. know how to drive in the snow, i'm from idaho. >> i have never put chains on. i'm not sure exactly what i'm doing. it's a learning experience. >> reporter: so, we have some safe driving tips for you. make sure you have the snow chains and practice using them before you get into a snowy situation. toss a shovel and sand into the back of your car so you have traction and a way to dig out if

documents and other data on the gunman's iphone. it covers a second phone and filed storage in the icloud account. they say that material can be turned over, but phones are a different story. the company clashed in the past with the fbi during the san bernardino terror attacks refusing to unlock a phone. they tell the texas paper, they do not comment on law enforcement matters. 6:16. interesting and exciting news this morning. tesla is struggling to build the model 3. this introduced, not one, but two vehicles. scott mcgrew joins us now. his own steve jobs moment. >> the one more thing trick. we knew he was going to introduce a semitruck cab and he did. it's an all electric truck and will have a 500 mile range and will never jackknife. then musk did the steve jobs,

one more thing trick and introduced a new roadster. look at that. the fastest production car. you may remember tesla's first car looked a lot like that. this car is 200,0$200,000, the roadster. tesla did not say how much the truck is going to cost. the truck's battery may cost upwards of $100,000 by itself. you've heard of batteries not included? truck not included. stitch fix raised 120 million dlarls in its ipo. that is modest. stitch fix is a clothing company that sends you a box of clothes every month. look at this. a sticky note on the front door. it's a post it. it says if you want to sell your house, call me asap. is it time to sell? should anyone buy at these silicon valley prices? i asked if we are in a housing bubble.

we are looking at the south bay, good recovery from the earlier crashes on 87 and 101. slow through san jose. back to you. >> thank you. a big step forward for muni. the first of muni's fleets of trains will hit the tracks this morning. >> thom jensen is live in san francisco to morning to explain how we'll see all this new enjoyable ride we will see in the area. >> reporter: marcus and laura, they are going to roll out five this year. the first one, as you said, the first new muni train in 20 years to replace the old ones like this one here. the first will come out where you see that truck parked there at 11:00 this morning. this comes ahead of schedule, unlike the testing setbacks that delayed the release of hundreds of bart cars. nbc bay area found this video on muni's youtube page this morning. here it is. it is from sound and vibration tests done in the tunnel behind me. the agency says the results were

good and the trains are going into service ahead of schedule. compare that to bart, which has been having trouble getting out of the testing phase with the $2.6 billion fleet replacement project after experiencing power supply issues and other glitches. as advertised, though, the sacramento built muni trains tested quieter, less vibration and more comfortable, according to the manufacturer. they say the trains need less maintenance. only time will tell if that claim is true. muni hopes to replace the entire fleet of trains with 200 new ones over the next ten years. this first new train that rolled out this morning that is dedicated will be dedicated in the name of larry martin, a long-time and respected transportation union leader and civil rights leader in san francisco, who passed away last month. live in san francisco, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >> that's a nice tribute, thom.

thanks so much. 6:34. closing arguments set to begin monday in the trial surrounding the kate steinle case. the judge, this week, agreed to that request from the prosecution. jurors will be able to consider second degree murder and involuntary manslaughter when they decide the fate of jose garcia zarate. during the trial, they did not deny he held the gun, but argued the shooting was accidental. happening now, the search is on for this woman who posted this viral video on snap chat. take a look at it. it appears to show her drinking from a bottle of alcohol driving around the bay area. this is in the middle of the night. she drove through 880 in oakland, newark and fremont. she is a student at sacramento state. the university isn't commenting. the hawaiian inmate that broke free from a psychiatric

hospital is expected to be arraigned today. he is speaking out about his escape and capture. he escaped from a mental hospital in hawaii over the weekend. he had been there ever since a 1979 murder when he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. during a jailhouse interview, he admitted to the killing, blaming it on drugs and said he escaped to prove he is no longer a threat to society. >> the reason why i did what i did is because i have been trying to apply for conditional release from the statehouse. they keep denying me. >> after his escape, authorities described him as a homicidal psycho path. several workers are suspended as they try to piece together how he pulled off the escape. so far, he is not talking about that part of the story. 6:36. a milpitas chiropractor is

accused of inappropriately touching a patient. a light volume around the bay, as you would expect. a couple trouble spots. san jose, a slowdown from north 85. an earlier crash cleared. the little bit of rain is complicating things, but nothing major. the east shore freeway, i have an update. sorry, i thought this crash cleared. went back and checked, chp says there are a couple lanes blocked. that is the reason for the back up. no more mystery. that is why we see the slowing there. the crash at the bay bridge looks like it should be clearing from treasure island. quickly, a motorcycle accident with no injuries.

as we go into the afternoon. my friend on twitter told me about the half marathon in berkeley. it is going to be nice and cool, but wear extra layers before you get warmed up. it's only going to be 45 degrees at the start of the half marathon sunday morning, then rising to the upper 50s as the morning goes along. you may be wrapping up the weekend with a pier 39 tree lighting in san francisco sunday evening. it is going to be in the low 60s. mostly cloudy skies as we flip on the switch to those lights. on the weekend, heading into napa valley, it's going to be beautiful, low 60s all throughout the weekend. up to 61 degrees on sunday. so, a little cooler. heavenly is excited about the new snow that has fallen and opening some of the ski resorts this weekend. 41. still some snow as you go through some of the passes this morning. then, it will be windsing down. a clear weekend ahead.

>> good to know. thanks so much. 6:43. justin herman plaza will go by a new name. it will temporarily be called embarcadero plaza until a new name is selected. the park and rec department made that decision. justin herman oversaw a project in the 1960s which resulted in asian-americans and black residents pushed out of the western edition. for years people campaigned for his name to be removed. others argued it was an important part of history. only on nbc, an exclusive on-camera interview with one of roy moore's accusers. he groped her in 1991 after a meeting in his law office. >> we eventually got up to leave. as we did, my mother went first. when i got up and went out, he grabbed my behind.

franken on the uso tour. she accepts his apology. when the president talks about the leslie staal tape talking about a tasteless comment. we were surprised the president decided to weigh in on a sex controversy. he is accused by more than a dozen women, many of who filed sworn statements in court saying trump assaulted them. remember the tape of him caught on tape, remember, when you are a star, you can do it. you can do anything. tweeden is wearing jacket and helmet. remember, the uso shows were in war zones. if you go on twitter, a lot of people think he is. hundreds of messages accusing him of that. the president's party trying to pass tax reform. it passed the house thursday. the senate still working on its own version. we examine the president's

cart. >> tlfls a lot going on there. i'll be at the santa clara safeway from 11:00 to 1:00. >> come out. we would love to meet you. you will feel good giving to others. >> you come to livermore, bob will do it for you. tear that off. >> okay. >> he knows how to do it. i'm going to stand back. >> super easy. you don't have to lug a bag around the store or pick out an item. take the sheet to the register. we are going to have a great day for that. we start with cool temperatures this morning. it is clearing out. take a look at the tri-valley on the right side of the screen. 48 degrees. as we look at the north bay, touches of fog. in some spots, visibility down to a half mile. clearing in san francisco. some roads may be wet from the rain yesterday. as we check out that seven day forecast at the bottom of the screen, cool temperatures and also clear skies for the next couple of days. as we look at the highs today,

in the upper 50s, and mid-60s for inland areas. quick moving rain through the south bay recently. all of that is done for now. we are going to have a type of day where we start out with cool temperatures. you need a hat and a nice, warm jacket. as the day goes along, take off the jacket and be very comfortable with long sleeves. it's not the type of day for the sandals or the boots. heels would be a good choice. also, the temperatures only reach the low 60s for today. it's going to be a great start for the weekend as you head out for the morning commute in the peninsula. mostly cloudy skies and it's cool. you may have to turn on the heater later on today. maybe windows open. sunny and cool temperatures. i wanted to show you that quick moving cell from the east bay to the south bay. all of that rolled out of here and we turn our attention to the next storm system set to move in. this one, clouds in that area of low pressure and that cold

front. that is starting to move in late sunday night to monday morning. we won't see the rain until monday. looks like a good weekend. san francisco, mid-60s by the middle of the week. we will have a chance of rain as you hit the roads for the thanksgiving holiday. inland afr yas reaching upper 60s. mike says it's a tough drive on the east shore freeway. >> there's hope for folks traveling through richmond and berkeley. over an hour from highway 4 to the bay bridge. the crash, the culprit cleared from all lanes. you should see some recovery despite the crowded westbound 80 direction. we are looking at the map. you see there is slowing there from over that golden gate. jam toward powell, you do better for the sensors. that means the bay bridge will get crowded. the rest of the bay, we see a smoother flow of traffic. southbound 880 recovers. this crash at broadway clear. there's a better flow of traffic into and out of downtown

the senior living center. this is what that fire looked like at the peak last night. more than 150 people evacuated, including people in wheelchairs and beds. firefighters said at least 20 people were hurt. they don't believe any of the injuries are life-threatening. we learned the gunman in the deadly shooting rampage in tehama county built the weapon himself. he was able to get around the tough gun laws ordering parts for rifles separately and later went on the rampage killing five people and hurting at least ten others, including two children. investigators later discovered his wife's body beneath the floor boards of their home. the hawaii inmate that escaped from a psychiatric hospital is due back in court. he was arrested for a murder.

during the jailhouse interview, he says he's been applying for conditional release from the hospital, but keeps getting denied. he tried to escape. he was being held in a mental hospital since 1979 for that murder but he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. as the holiday travel rush begins, maybe you are headed to the sere era. be safe. experts say you need the snow chains or cables on your car. pack a shovel and sand or kitty litter. normal protocol when headed to tahoe. muni will roll out the new fleet of trains this morning. they posted this video you are about to see of those trains on youtube chltd they are quieter and don't vibrate as much. the manufacture says they are
