the president tweeting, put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as i review all conservation facts. a temporary win for conservation activists. >> having elephants and lions is a huge driver to the economy. there are millions and millions of people from all over the world who go to africa to see these animals alive. >> reporter: now if the administration ends up easing restrictions, conservationists say it's a huge step backwards. >> we're essentially rolling out the red carpet for the next walter palmer. >> reporter: in 2015, minnesota dennis walter palmer killed cecil the lion in zimbabwe. a beloved symbol of that country's wildlife. heartbroken, palmer said, if i had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study, obviously i would not have taken it. but doctor palmer faced anger at home and was forced to close his

practice for two months. his vacation home vandalized. the lion was listed as threatened and barred americans from bringing them back as trophies after africa lost 43% of its lions in two decades. but the wildlife service disagreed. saying the killing of trophy animals in zimbabwe will enhance the survival of the african elephant arguing the country uses the money to step up conservation efforts. this morning the big debate. will the dollars spent to hunt these majestic animals really help save the species? or is it just an excuse to put a trophy on a wall? for "today," tom costello, nbc news, washington. questions still swirling this morning around alabama senate candidate roy moore amid growing allegations he had inappropriate contact with young women decades ago. on friday moore's wife came to his defense along with dozens of other women who say they stand behind him. nbc's mya rodriguez is in

birmingham with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. well, both sides are bracing for the final 25 days of this campaign. but it's questions about the past behavior of the republican nominee roy moore that continues to divide this state. in a little more than a week, at least nine women have made allegations against roy moore about inappropriate behavior stretching back decades. ranging from unwanted pursuing of teenagers to sexual assault. moore denies all claims of sexual misconduct. his campaign calls them, quote, politically motivated. >> we're in a battle. >> reporter: while he avoided the spotlight on friday, his wife kayla did not. speaking before her husband's supporters. >> even after all the attacks against me, against my family, against the foundation, and now against my husband, he will not step down. >> reporter: on friday, alabama's republican governor kay ivy said while she has no

reason to not believe his accusers, she still plans to vote for moore to help republicans keep their majority in the u.s. senate. >> i will cast my ballot on december the 12th and i do believe the nominee of the party is the one i'll vote for. >> reporter: but not all women are convinced. in moore's hometown of gadsden, some of the scrutiny welcomed. >> i think it's an important issue. i think the truth needs to be dug out. there's things that have been known here for years and years that have gone unchecked. >> reporter: meanwhile, the white house is pushing back on claims that president trump stayed silent about the allegations against moore. >> he said if the allegations are true, he should step aside. he also weighed in when he supported the rnc's decision to withdraw resources from the state of alabama. >> reporter: moore's opponent in the alabama senate race, democrat doug jones. not mentioning his opponent by name but acknowledging all the attention paid to this race. >> i think for all women, we're at a tipping point in this country that we are seeing and we are empowering women to stand

up and speak out. and i think that that's a wonderful thing. >> reporter: for his part, democrat doug jones has benefitted from moore's troubles. he's raised about a quarter of a million dollars a day since news of the scandal broke. >> mya rodriguez for us in alabama this morning. mya, thank you. while president trump is keeping quiet about roy moore and his allegations, he's not hesitating to take on al franken who apologized this week for his own misdeeds with a model on a uso tour in 2006. he canceled two appearances as he dealed with the fallout. kelly o'donnell is following it all for us. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. it's easy to see how president trump has a lot riding on the outcome of the alabama senate race which is why it is notable that he's relied on his spokesperson, not his twitter feed or words on camera to comment about roy moore. that has stood out.

however, the president has been willing to use his twitter feed to criticize democrat al franken who's been a trump critic. out of sight. senator al franken canceled book tour appearances for sunday and monday. fallout after his apology for making an unwanted sexual advance toward leann tweeden who appeared on stage with him at a 2006 show for troops. out ofbounds. the white house says past complaints of sexual misconduct made by several women against president trump are not at issue now. >> senator franken has admitted wrong doing and the president hasn't. i think that's a very clear distinction. >> reporter: defending franken. women staffers who together released a letter saying, he treated us with the utmost respect. lawmakers find their own reactions are under fire. senator kirsten gillibrand who said president bill clinton's sexual misconduct should have led to his resignation pushed back against clinton allies who

called her a hypocrite for accepting the clintons' help. >> bill clinton did very important things for this country, but my point is about this conversation we are having today and that we need to have the high standards for elected leaders. >> reporter: the harassment controversies prompted a surprising strategy in ohio. in a facebook statement quoted by "the washington post," a democrat hoping to run for governor referred to the latest news as a national feeding frenzy about sexual indiscretions. bill o'neil, a state supreme court justice then over-shared. in the last 50 years, i was sexually intimate with 50 very attractive females including a gorgeous blond and a drop dead gorgeous redhead. o'neil's comments garnered condemnation. for senator franken, he has not been seen publicly since this blew up. he has sent a personal handwritten letter to his

accusers and she accepted his because the senate is now on its break for thanksgiving and is not due back to washington for more than a week. >> thank you. >> president trump's son-in-law and top adviser jared kushner is coming under fire for failing to disclose what lawmakers call a back door overture and dinner invite with a russian banker accused of links with organized crime and vladimir putin. this between the man who set up the meeting last year says he is now ready to talk to special prosecutor robert mueller. kim delaney is an investigative and national security reporter for nbc news. always good to see you. thanks for coming in this morning. >> good morning, craig. >> kushner's legal team has not turned over all the documents it requested, documents including a russian back door overture and a

dinner invite. what do we know about this overture? >> this is really just another example of a russian with high level kremlin connections circling around the trump campaign. this man accused by spanish prosecutors of having russian organized crime connection, something he denies, was trying to get a a senior level around a national rifle association conference. an e-mail chain made its way to kushner. and kushner instructed people to pass on the meeting. and his lawyer says, look, that's exculpatory. but the problem is they didn't turn these documents over to investigators. secondly, this man did get a high-level trump meeting with donald trump jr. according to to him, he had dinner with donald trump jr. trump remembers it a little differently. but congressional investigators want to know more about that encounter. >> ken, quickly, let's talk for a moment about the man who set up the infamous meeting between donald trump jr. and the russians. rob goldstone, he's agreed to

talk to bob mueller's team. a couple of things. one, why might goldstone be so important to this administration -- this investigation? and two, should the administration be worried? >> reporter: sheinelle, goldstone is important because he was the guy who set up this meeting. he was the intermediary between the russian family and donald trump jr. he wrote those e-mails we've all read that said the russian government is trying to help your dad and this russian lawyer has incriminating information on hillary clinton. so we've seen those e-mails. but robert mueller wants to know what else goldstone knows about what was promised, what was delivered. so he's important in this. >> ken, thank you. some other big headlines we're following this morning include an intense manhunt under way in florida a day after three inmates broke out of jail. they escaped through the ceiling in the jail's library. stephanie gosk is here with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, this morning residents in florida are on edge and

they're on the lookout. more than 24 hours after those three inmates escaped from the county ji. the sheriff of the county said they were likely unarmed but should still be considered dangerous. search teams are out in the florida panhandle combing through heavily wooded areas. this video shot by the tallahassee democrat. multiple agencies are part of the effort on foot and in the air. >> we're not going to rest until these guys are back behind bars. >> reporter: there's indication they may have left the area, but they are continuing to search locally. joel cooper, donald cotterman and casey martina are all charged with armed burglary. all three have long rap sheets and were awaiting court proceedings. when in the early morning hours on friday the sheriff's office says they escaped through a hole in the ceiling of the law library. >> the ceiling had a pretty thick sheet rock covering and

they were able to break through that sheet rock covering and get up into the ceiling. once they got in between the ceiling and the roof, they made their way to the nearest door they could find. and dropped down. >> reporter: last seen wearing sweats and long johns, police closed schools on friday and told the public to keep eyes open but do not approach them. >> my girlfriend was scared to death. we've got four kids. she tells me she wants to get a gun and stuff like that. >> i know our sheriff's department does a wonderful job and i know they're going to get them. >> reporter: often the most challenging things for escapees is figuring what to do when they get out. no money, no clothes. they will need support. that's often when law enforcement can catch up to them. until then, no doubt people in the panhandle of florida are making sure their doors are double bolted. back to you. >> stephanie, thank you. some 24 hours after a fire tore through a nursing home in pennsylvania, authorities say they are still trying to account for everyone who had been inside

when that fire broke out. meanwhile, investigators are also trying to figure out what caused the massive blaze that forced 140 people to flee for their lives. kristen dahlgren reports now. >> reporter: as intense flames ripped through the senior living center, some residents trapped inside. in beds and wheelchairs unable so escape the raging inferno. >> it was heavy black smoke. you couldn't see. >> reporter: this nurse assistant was on duty. just one of the countless heroes to rushed in to help. >> i didn't think about me running out and leaving them in. i thought about getting them out to safety first. >> reporter: as she roused residents, high winds spread the blaze. >> they need as many ems units at the scene as they can get. >> reporter: hundreds of firefighters were soon joined by neighbors. >> a lot of them don't have anywhere to go tomorrow and their families are scared and it's just sad. >> reporter: andrew and luke took an uber from their college 20 minutes away.

>> at first we were just looking for my grandmother. >> it was a moment of panic. >> reporter: but even after his own grandmother was safe, they stayed pushing others from danger. >> once we knew she was safe, we were going to help at that point. what other option do you really have? >> reporter: 27 were injured. the mayor telling nbc news some people are still missing. police won't confirm how many people are unaccounted for. but with more than 150 residents rescued, many are calling it a miracle. that so many were saved. >> we're blessed to be out. everybody's blessed to be out. >> reporter: for "today," kristen dahlgren, nbc news, westchester, pennsylvania. also this morning, argentina is intensifying the search for a missing submarine with 44 crew members on board. there's been no communication with the sub for two days. officials believe an electrical outage may be to blame which would force the vessel to come to the surface, but there's been no sign of it in stormy weather. the sub was last confirmed to be in the south argentine sea.

an intense search is under way in western pennsylvania this morning for a suspect involved in that deadly shooting of a police officer. officer bryan shaw tried to make a traffic stop last night when he was shot and killed during a foot pursuit. he had been with the police department for less than a year. police have recovered a vehicle wanted in connection with the shooting and are now calling on the public for help and finding the suspect. meanwhile, a hunt for two suspects is under way in gainesville, florida where a gun battle erupted after police responded to a domestic violence call there. both of those officers suffered minor injuries and are expected to be okay. tv host ryan seacrest has released a formal statement disputing a decade-old misconduct allegation made by a former wardrobe stylist at e news. he said i dispute these reckless allegations and i plan to cooperate with any corporate inquiries that may result. i treat all this colleagues with kindness, dignity, and

understanding as this is a principle that's core to who i am. seacrest apologized if he ever made the woman feel disrespected, but he went on to say throughout his career the majority of his colleagues have been women whom he respects, advocates for, and says will continue to support. seacrest says his track record will speak for itself. dylan dreyer standing by. we've got nasty weather in parts of this country. >> i know. and if you are traveling, it is the middle of the country that's going to see the trouble spots today. but take a look at what we saw in colorado where we did have some snow falling in parts of southeastern colorado with this system moving through. you can see kind of a car vision there. driving into the snow. and there were some spinouts and accidents because it's that time of year where you have to get used to driving in that nasty weather again. not a whole lot of accumulation. but still it's a sign of what's to come. this storm system is now moving through the midwest. and you can see heavy rain is really the biggest factor with this storm system right now. and the heaviest of the rain is

moving through iowa. just south of chicago. we're also seeing heavier rain moving into northern ohio and parts of western pennsylvania. the wind is going to be a big factor, though, over the next day or so. 40 to 50 mile-per-hour gusts. wind advisories in effect. this area of low pressure will continue to move eastward. it's going to move rain into the northeast into sunday. back behind it winds are so strong we're going to see lake-effect snow kick in. parts of upstate new york could see a foot of snow. if you're it's a cold 30s and 40s for the bay area this morning, and palo alto, 38 degrees right now, san jose, 42, up near the napa and santa rosa area, also waking up to those 30s. now, we are expecting an overall dry day, the temperatures will be fairly cool, climbing into the 60s for san francisco with mostly clear skies, not just for the coastline few also for inland areas, san jose, expect a climb into the mid 60s before we see the return of some rain by tomorrow.

we'll n tutune in at 7:00. a courthouse confrontation caught on video, a santa clara deputy being accused of using excessive force. >> i heard you. >> that deputy was attempting to enforce a no courthouse videotaping rule. well, that woman you heard, susan, says she's a journalist which was helping two members search their family court cases. she says she started recording because deputies surrounded one of the men she was with and told him to stop taking pictures of documents. a sheriff's department spokesman declined to speak to us on camera but he did say the deputies were trying to enforce a standing order by the lead judge of the family court that says you can't take pictures or video in the courthouse. he claims deputies have told her about that order before. today was adoption day and up on the 8th floor, there were people with their phones out recording all over, so they're selectively using who they apply the recording in the courthouse.

a santa clara county deputy is being accused of using excessive force. >> no recording. >> i heard you. >> well, that deputy was attempting to enforce a no courthouse videotaping rule. susan bassi, the woman whose voice you heard, says she's a journalist and was helping two men research their family court cases. she says she started recording because deputies surrounded one of the men she was with and told him to stop taking pictures of documents. a sheriff's department spokesman declined to speak to us on camera but he did say the deputies were trying to enforce a standing order by the lead judge of the family court banning taking pictures or video in the courthouse. he claims deputies have told bassi about that order before. >> today was adoption todday anp on the 8th floor, there were people with their phones out recording all over, so they're selectively using who they apply the recording in the courthouse. >> bassi says the deputy broke her hand when he took her phone. this is what it looked like
