i'm terry mcsweeney. >> ike vicky nguyenwin. three people on the plane are alive but some victims suffered serious injuries. that crash happened about 3:00 near reid-hillview airport. the plane had just taken off but couldn't make it back after having trouble. it ended up crashing a few blocks away. >> thom jenson was on the scene shortly after the crash and joins us live with the details tom? >> reporter: terry and vicky, you can see behind me we've got firefighters trying to tear into that airplane right now. federal investigators from the faa are on the scene here right now, they're trying to look at the equipment. see exactly what happened. but preliminary indications are and the reports are that it sounds like there was some sort of equipment malfunction and then a failed attempt to scramble back to the airport before this crash. witnesses say they saw the

single engine cessna copping in low over the homes in the 2100 block of evelyn avenue just before it went down. mario calderon was at work talking to her daughter on her cell phone who described the crash as it was happening. > it went so fast and then crashed. that's what she said. >> reporter: san jose fire first got the call at about 3:00. a spokesman tells nbc bay area it was a report of equipment failure. the pilot who had just taken off was circling back to try to land back at reed hill view airport about a half mile away. >> thankful that it hit where it did instead of people on the side of the road. >> reporter: it crashed into a converted garage and the three people inside the home at the time of the crash were not injured. tonight, they are in temporary red cross housing. >> so they're not going to be able to go back if for some time. it's habitable after we mitigated the hazard. >> that includes cleaning up

spilled aviation fuel and removing the plane. the owner of the plane has also been on the scene saying one of his airplanes has never crashed before. mike mcclellan said his main concern right now is the condition of one of the student pilot who's rented his airplane and who was in surgery this evening. now, after this went down, we did digging. i went through some of the ntsb investigative reports from crashes out of reed hill view and i did find out that there have not been a lot of crashes outside. there have been some incidents on the airport property itself. as far as coming into a neighborhood and having a plane go down, that hasn't happened for 30 years. the last time in 1988 when a small airplane crashed into the nearby mall and crashed into the j.c. penney's store there. since then, nothing like this. but this has been a concern for people who live out here. we're working on that part of the story for 11:00 tonight.

live in san jose, tom jensen, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. expanding on something he mentioned we've obtained audio of the communication between the pilot and the control tower moments before the plane crashed. here's the may day call. >> may day may day. 567249er two. you can make a left 180 for runway 13 left. 1-3 right. continue left for the runway. any runway available. >> as you heard, after the pilot called may day, the control tower told him to turn around, try landing on any runway available. we've uncovered detailed information about the airport's policy. here's a look at the airport's runways as seen from a google satellite map. today's crash happened on evelyn just a few blocks from the airport. that airport reid-hillview averages 411 aircraft operations

each day. no airplanes are allowed to turn below 500 feet when they're taking off except for the planes leaving from runway 3-1 right. those planes have to make a slight right turn to avoid a school just but half a mile off the departure end there. the last recorded crash at reed had i view was july 23rd, 2017. a student pilot and ininstructor were doing touch and go landings. a single engine plane like the one today crashed into a fence. before that, august 10th, 2016 a small plane failed to take off. it rolled off the runway again crashing into a fence. and it was a student pilot and ininstructor. no one was hurt in either crash. >> we're going to continue to follow the story online at nbcbayarea.com. follow us on twitter and facebook, as well for the latest update prfz now to breaking news. a very unusual investigation off the coast. a boat found going in circles near half moon bay.

at least one person is dead. an active scene right now. sergio quintana has new information. sergio? >> reporter: terry, they just pulled that boat from the water. i actually just saw it driven off the harbor by san mateo county scherff's deputies. it took authorities quite some time to get control of that spinning boat. the county sheriff's department, the coast guard and local harbor master spent time inspecting that boat once they got it ashore. right now it's not clear how it started spinning. according to the harbor master, two people were board that boat. they've recovered one body from the water. that person pronounced dead on the scene. according to the scherff's department and the harbor master office, that person didn't have any obvious wounds or injuries. >> it doesn't appear suspicious at this time. we're trying to rule out everything we know. we do know that individual wasn't wearing a life jacket.

injuries. tom jensen has been covering this crash and shortly after it happened, he's been tweeting updates. you can follow him on twitter for updated information. the uproar over sexual abuse allegations against candidate roy moore gained more steam today as the state's biggest newspapers urged voters to reject him this as a member of the president's team defended mr. trump's silence on the moore controversy. nbc's jennifer johnson has our story tonight from washington. >> reporter: an unusual page one editorial in alabama's top newspaper urning voters to reject republican senate candidate roy moore in next month's election. the birmingham news says the vote is about the moral values of the people of alabama but they are still divided. >> i've been a lifelong republican that i have always voted for the person. i'm not going to be able to vote for roy moore. >> i'm going to vote for moore because i think it's the -- i think at least he's trying.

the "today" show tomorrow morning. >> entrepreneur russell simmons is the latest powerful man accused of sexual misconduct. a model told the los angeles times the cofoirpd of def jam records coerced her to perform a sex act in '91. she was 17 years old at that time. she also says director brett ratner was in the room at the time. simmons says everything that happened between them was consensual. ratner is facing accusations of sexual misconduct from at least ten women. president trump lashing out against the father of a ucla player freed from china. mr. trump tweeted about lavar ball, the father of liangelo ball and lonzo ball, the tweet read now that the three basketball players are out of china and saved from years in jail, lavar ball, the father of liangelo is unaccepting of what i did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. i should have left them in jail.

morning. this 40-foot tall tree came this is not what you want to see when you head to your car in the morning. this 40-foot tall -- that tree cape crashing down on to a parked car in san francisco. it fell at about 10:00 this morning between strayeder right near golden gate park. fortunately no one was hurt. the damage to one car is significant. it's not clear why the tree fell. the roots may have been loosened after the recent rain. >> more than 200,000 children will go to bed without a home of their own. investigative reporter hit the streets to looking into this disturbing problem. >> they're among the most vulnerable vips of the housing crisis. children born hopeless. across the bay area, 20,000 kids and teens were homeless for at

started living mostly on her own. worked several jobs and attended college for a year. >> is part of you worried your daughter might have to spend some of her childhood homeless like you did? >> that is a worry but you know, if i have to change around my whole life to make sure she has a place to stay i will. >> reporter: to get to her doctor's appointment, it's about an hour's commute. two bus lines. >> i have an appointment today at 3:45 sfwhr and a rain. >> i've been lucky that my baby works with me and doesn't give me a lot of pain. >> reporter: her fiance now live at a drug rehab center and she lives as the a rehab center where she's been gathering baby supplies for month. she also attends free parenting classes a couple times a week.

>> they look like they like it. >> reporter: have you decided on a name. >> >> yeah, her name is faith. believing that thing will get better even though it doesn't seem that way. >> reporter: the number of pregnant homeless women is difficult to crack. but the crisis is clear in san francisco. moms with children even newborns begging on the street. one non-profit tells us it's seen at least 224 homeless pregnant women this year alone. and the number of homeless women giving birth has spiked at least 76% since 2010. >> there are women who have to spend their pregnancies on the streets. >> dana is a registered nurse with the department and is on the road daily providing medical care to the homeless, including pregnant women and new mops. >> reporter: can homeless parents really provide for their kids? >> these women have everything that a baby needs. but not having sheeter makes those things really difficult to

here's your travel outlook. snow showers across the great lakes. clearing skies on the east coast. travel wise other than seattle and portland, doesn't look that bad for wednesday and clear by a good travel day from the bay area southward for wednesday into thursday. eventually the rain chances return to the north bay thursday into friday. light chances. best chance we're seeing more significant rainfall possibly by next sunday. but in the meantime, besides tomorrow, the story of the week will be mild temperatures. areas south of san jose may get close to 80 on wednesday. so the seven-day forecast feels a bit more like summer by tuesday and wednesday. once we get past the showers tomorrow, a few possible friday. a better chance by next sunday. 70s close to 80 as we approach thanksgiving. good to get outside and work off some of the calories maybe on friday. >> i'm feeling turkey on the patio. >> this sounds good, rob. thanks very much. the raiders heading to mexico for a critical game.

hey, guys, i'm fallon smith with this nissan sports report. after a week off, the raiders are back in business facing the patriots in mexico city. now before the game, oakland got some help. the chiefs lost to the new york giants. so with the win, the silver and black could pull within one game of first place in the afc west. but that didn't happen. we'll get to that in a bit.
