running for his life, as north korean soldiers follow him and open fire. it was all captured on camera, including a daring rescue. in the dramatic footage, released overnight, a military jeep hurtles toward the demilitarized zone. inside the vehicle, a north korean soldier risking his life, desperate to defect. hef avi heavily-armed border guards, racing the intercept him. the defector leaps from the jeep. seconds later, his military colleagues firing 40 rounds. he is shot at least five times. his motionless body slumped against the wall. the footage then shows a daring rescue. south korean soldiers crawling to him and dragging him to safety. just last month, inside north korea, we visited the border area, known as the dmz. our military guide took us through the very same road where

the defector is seen. and to the heavily-guarded border where north and south is just steps away from each other. the escape, an embarrassment for north korea, who said that defectors are kidnapped or lured by the south. opening fire, it's shot for the first time in three decades. the soldier, now recovering after two operations. lucky to be alive. running for freedom, especialing wi escaping with just seconds to spare. that north korean soldier just crossing the border. that's one of the issues that many are saying, they're surprised this didn't turn into a wider firefight. that border is so tense. savannah? >> it is, indeed. >> you think of the restraint on part of the south korean soldiers not to fire back at the north korean soldiers. could have ended differently.

the navy saying those rescued are in good condition, while search and rescue efforts for three personnel continue. the aircraft was part of a naval exercise with 14,000 u.s. personnel participating. but it crashed during a routine flight, the u.s. military says. it will raise questions, though. this year, the u.s. navy has seen two fatal accidents in that region. matt? >> keir simmons on this story from london. thank you very much. gabby douglas has added her name to the growing list of young women who say they were abused by former u.s. olympic team doctor, larry nassar. >> douglas shared an emotional post on tuesday, expressing her support for teammates who have come forward, and asking followers to, quote, please hear my heart. three-time gold medalist, gabby douglas took to twitter to say, she, too, was abused by larry nassar.

i didn't share my experience as well as other things. for years, we were conditioned to stay silent. and some things were painful. the statement comes a week after her teammate, 23-year-old aly raisman, revealed in her book, that nassar molested her, as well. >> from the moment that i realized that it happened to me, i wanted to, you know, talk about it. society sometimes makes it hard for people to come forward because you always have people that victim-shame. we have to stop that because it's awful. >> reporter: on social media, raisman added, just because a woman does a sexy photo shoot or wears a sexy outfit, doesn't give a man the right to shame her or not believe her when she comes forward about sexual abuse. 21-year-old gabby douglas responded with a post that has been deleted. it is our responsibility to dress modestly and be classy. dressing in a provocative way entices the wrong crowd.

simone biles said she expected more from her teammate. on tuesday, the olympian elaborated. i want to reiterate my apology to a comment one of my teammates posted. i know some of you are about to take what i am about to say as insincere. but i wanted to provide context. douglas added, i know what you wear, it doesn't give anyone the right to abuse you. it would be like saying because of the leotards we were wearing, it was our fault that we were accused by larry nassar. and now critics of douglas turning to support, saying the olympic star will never stop promoting strength and courage. usa gymnastics released a statement that says, usa gymnastics understands that sharing a personal story requires courage and fortitude.

the conduct of which larry nassar is accused is appalling and we're very sorry that any athlete has been harmed during her or his gymnastics career. nassar is expected to plead guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault and will likely face 25 years in prison. fans are remembering teen idol david cassidy, who died overnight from organ failure. he shot to fame on "the partridge family." it led to real-life success as a pop star. cassidy struggled with alcohol and substance abuse in his career. cassidy died surrounded by those he loved with joy in his heart. david cassidy was 67 years old.

jurors today begin their first good morning, it's 8:26, i'm marcus washington. jurors today begin the first full day of deliberations in the trial surrounding the death of kate steinle. it's possible that the verdict could be reached as soon as today. it's more likely a decision will not be reached that quickly. if that happens, the jurors will take at least a break during the thanksgiving weekend and pick up again on monday. steinle was shot in july of 2015 as she walked on pier 14 in san francisco. lawyers for the defendant, jose garcia zarate did not dispute that he fired the gun but argued that it was accidental. mike looking at traffic now, it's better. >> it's better. still a little slowing coming into fremont out of hayward.

good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we've got some turkey trots going on around the bay area. as we take a live look outside right now in san francisco, it's all clear, but we are still seeing that patchy fog across the central valley. heads up if you're driving. right now temperatures are heading towards the upper 60s to low 70s. 75 in san jose and 80 in santa cruz. over the next few days, temperatures above average, only slight rain chances and then we'll start to see more widespread rain moving in. >> all-star thanksgiving is brought to you by walmart. rock this christmas with walmart. it is time to turn to our all-star thanksgiving extravaganza. first, we're talking turkey. we have ten talented chefs with us to share their best turkey tips.

>> hi, chefs. good morning. >> hi. this is crazy. we could make this thing circle around. it would be awesome. you're starting us off, right? tell us about your tip. >> when thor the can i coe er t the oven, you have to let it rest. it's not going to get cold. you want the juices to stay incontact. and to carve the turkey, i take both sides of the breast off, completely. and i slice them. i make really thick slices with the breast. and i keep it the same shape. and i put it right on the platter. >> all right. looks beautiful. >> i want you to take your turkey out. really pare lly important to ge turkey dry. put it in the refrigerator

uncovered. >> you put the rub on and then put it in the fridge. >> you want to get the moisture out. and important, before you cook it, take this sucker out. this is the wishbone. you will have an easier time carving yourer t turkey. >> well, how do you get -- never mind. >> should i just leave? whatever. one of my favorite ways to cook a turkey, to ensure you have moist between the breast and the tie, to butterfly the turkey. one side of the spine. and i go to the other side of the spine. it's all right. you have stock right here. and you flip the bird over. and you lay it out. by cooking it this way, you have

a moist bird all the way through. you don't have the problem that it's dry in the best. that's the way to go. >> that was super impressive. >> my best thanksgiving tip, warn the hosts when you're going to spin the floor. you like spices to get the fat level down. >> a great way to get flavor into the turkey is to use spices. and the best way to use spices is by buying them whole, roasting them in a hot pan. and then, you grind them up in small batches to use. >> in the bird or on the bird? >> use the spice rub with the salt to get the skin crispy. in the cavity. >> and by the way, look how you got used to the spinning floor. that was really good.

>> i want a lazy susan every time i come back. >> you got it. your special ingredient, citrus. >> when looking, three things make things great. fat, acid and salt. just a little citrus makes the whole difference. lemon or lime or an orange. after you season the bird, garl garlic, a little smoked paprika. and a little citrus on top, just like this. >> goes a long way. >> hold on, everybody. here we go. >> all right, roxanne. >> what do you have? >> a key ingredient, called mayo. >> my favorite tip is housemade mayonnai mayonnaise, fresh eggs. pipe that under the skin of your bird. >> why? >> it's a different show. >> why do you do that? >> it fries the skin and

marinates the meat. >> welcome to youtube. >> there we go. >> melissa has an important tip, especially if the color of the bird doesn't seem right. >> when you take your bird's temperature. get a good thermometer. when you put it in, it should be 165 at the thigh. if you carve it, say you carve the bird. and it looks ever so slightly pink. sometimes that happens. >> should you cook it more? >> no. some birds are pink. it's the diet. don't freak out. >> trust the thermometer. >> and look at the ticks chextu. >> nice talking to you. >> you have this separated here? >> anybody that knows turkey knows that the breast, the white meat and the legs, the dark meat, cook at different rates. the legs need a heartier cooking

method. we're going to braise them separately and put aeromatics in here. >> it smells wonderful. >> some wine, aeromatics, some stock, let them cook off slowly. we're going to pull them out. you can use all of the liquid in here. none of it goes to waste. make a nice gravy. >> i saw al nibbling. >> we're frying our turkey. >> one of the best ways to prepare the turkey is to deep fry it. health and safety issues. it's kind of scary. we're going to hack it up, pieces. i like to put a little crust, like a fried turkey, if you will. you have a good sizzle, delicious. gorgeous, juicy, crunchy. >> now, i see why you were nibbling. >> anybody else have vert igo.

we're back with our special "today food all-star thanksgiving." time to look at the side dishes. we've assembled a top team to get it done. good morning. >> good morning. >> gravy, you want it thick. you say, forget the flour. >> use tapioca starch. it's going to come out velvety. >> that's a great idea. how do you get the potatoes creamy? >> you want to use yukon golds. i like to use a ricer. you push them through a ricer. they come out. you add your milk and butter. you are golden. >> i have gravy cooking on the stove. i run out of stove top space. >> you have so much on the stove.

you put it in a thermos. and welcome to our boy band. >> thank you very much. let's go to savannah. >> we're going to start by taking cranberries to the next level. >> i would like to introduce you to cranberry blitz. that's a three-minute cranberry sauce. cranberry juice, maple syrup, orange zest, put it in the oven for one minute. three minutes in the toaster oven, cranberry blitz. >> when you're done at the parade, you're going to make the mashed potatoes. we take the butter wrappers and put them over the top. and you didn't use plastic. and they stay warm. >> i love that. recycling. and the stuffing.

>> the stuffing. i am a grown-up fat kid. to get that perfect crispy to tender ratio, put it in a muffin tin. or do a loaf pan. and it doesn't matter. any stuffing works in it. >> just use a little scoop. put it in the oven, you're done. >> hoda, over to you. >> i love my team. let's start with lydia. what's your tip for the sides? >> you love the flavor, the glaze, the shine on your turkey. balsamic vinegar, honey. reduce it to half. >> ladle that on top? >> drizzle it like that. >> all right. you have a great place for the potatoes to go. >> a great parking space. instead of a roasting rack, elevate your turkey with the potatoes underneath. you have a built-in side dish.

>> tom, you say you have to get busy. >> in the restaurants, we make some stuff ahead of time. this is my bacon and onion. this is the beginning of the stuffing. and we have turkey stock or chicken stock. >> that way, it's not so stressful. you're not chopping. you know how you do. what do you have? >> i'm keeping everything veggie-friendly. nuts you toast them up. >> you don't need the bacon after all? >> not if you give me some fat and crunch with some nuts. >> you're all awesome. up next, thanksgiving desserts, drinks and decor. we're going to keep going with our all-star team. first, this is "today" on nbc. ♪ with our all-star team. first, this is "today" on nbc.

separates from the water. and it's a vegan dairy-free whipped cream. >> talk about decor. >> i'm all about the party. my friends that can't make thanksgiving. i ask them for a childhood photos. and i set the table with my wife. that's how i get the conversation going. >> great idea. laura, what do you got? >> i like to do my shopping at the grocery store. that includes the center pieces. add some cranberries to your vase. a little rosemary. add a tea candle and it floats. i take herbs at place mats. it's cheap, cheerful and everyone loves it. >> lucinda, you're going to make a dessert.

>> you have cranberry sauce. you have whipped cream. you fold it together. >> that's easy. >> supereasy. and you layer it into a glass and you have a parfait. >> and it took you two seconds. >> two seconds. >> that's my kind of dessert. >> show them what you're going to do with the dental floss. i'm not going to use it on my teeth. if you're making a layer cake, you don't have to cut it with a knife. you can cut it with the floss. he may sleep with the fishes but he eats like a king. >> remember, leave the gun, take the cannoli. >> we're doing alternatives. apele crisp. use instant oatmeal for the crumble topping. an alternative to pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll.
