through ukiah. temperatures slightly warmer than usual. currently, if you're waking up now, the temperature is already warming up into the upper 50s for some areas. san francisco, 59 and in the north bay area in the 40s and 50s. a closer look when that rain moves completely out of the north bay and what we can expect for the rest of the bay area coming up in just a bit. >> thanks. in the news, the search continues for whoever shot a man near facebook headquarters. happened in menlo park. the victim, homeless, shot several times on nearby train tracks. he survived. officers used a drone and airplane in their search for the bad guy. no arrests or word on what led up to this. jurors in the case on a thanksgiving break did not reach a verdict in the case. they deliberated all morning yet before heading home around noon for the long weekend. they will return on monday at ne 9:00 in the mork. accused of shooting and killing

this woman in san francisco on ch in 2015. the defense says it was an accident. the prosecution claims garcia intended to shoot steinle. >> a warning for this holiday for shoppers planning on visiting one of the largest malls in the area. >> thieves are targeting malls in san jose. people going to santana row also. nbc bay area spoke to one woman who says somebody stole her vintage louis vuitton bag earlier in the week from her car. >> in shock. there maybe an hour and a half. looked it, had to, broke it really quick and left. nothing else was missing. >> and overnight, we found a total of 21 similar incidents of burglaries and thefts in that area just in the last two week. happening today, an annual

thanksgiving dinner for those in need in san francisco. >> memorial church, our reporter. >> reporter: good morning, scott and kris. thanksgiving dinner here at glide memorial church. a big celebration to help those in need, who need this help to share a meal during this time of thanksgiving. we'll show you individual grow yesterday. city leaders including the san francisco mayor, ed lee, helping with prep for this. they're going to have turkey, all the sides, salad, fixings, all of those things for everyone here. as far as who they're helping, helping those in need. an organizer said they'll serve around 5,000 meals today. a lot of meals for people on this thanksgiving day and also 500 volunteers helping out. now, this is something that the church does all year long. i want to point that out, serving roughly 750 meals annually to folks in this community and also folks outside this community. low-income communities that need help during this time.

they are setting things up, and just getting here on the ground. we're going to talk to some of the organizers here. we'll have more on this great event here for thanksgiving at the top of the next hour. live in san francisco. >> 5,000 peoples. a lot of getting up, sitting down and helping people with their condiments. a lot to be thankful for. >> detained six months by i.c.e., a san francisco man is back home just in tyke for thanksgiving. he was working at travis air force base when he and another worker were taken into custody by immigration authorities. he is an undocumented immigrant from mexico but has been in the country more than a decade. his co-worker was deported in august but a judge ordered him released on bond while his case makes its way through immigration court. he says he is grateful for this small victory. >> i happen to work to describe

a live look at san jose. )christmas in the park starts ) tomorrow! and welcome back. it's thursday, thanksgiving thursday, as we take a live look at downtown san jose. christmas in the park starts tomorrow. >> i always love that. our investigation into the sinking and tilting millennium tower in san francisco continues. now we're learning a new problem is developing. after the skyscraper's problems got national exposure, recently on "60 minutes," five insurance companies withdrew their offers. the tower's home owners' association is warning owners the insurance bill may go up $25 million as a result and tower residents have to foot the bill. it sunk some 17 inches since built. it's insurance agent calls it the most notorious defect claim in the world saying 75 different companies turned down an offer

to bid on those insurance policies. and all the construction in san francisco's union square has shoppers saying bah-hum-bug. building under the popular shopping square. for the last five years, from post to ellis, open to pedestrians who lay down turf. benches to sit on. this year, less space. the construction has grown and ta taken up more space. shoppers we talked to weren't too happy ap that a lot of displaced people don't have places to sit and we lost the kids a couple of times behind construction platforms. >> i guess if you don't know your way around san francisco it can be very difficult, because there is a lot of construction in the middle. >> we're going to presume she found her children. the pedestrian area usually opens day after thanksgiving. this year it hopes saturday.

the way down through ukiah. zooming in closer to our area, you can see, a couple of showers pushing through. santa rosa and the napa area can expect to see showers on and off the next several hours and then it should dry out okay. the temperatures overall. look at this. already upper 50s in san jose. 59 degrees. in san francisco, also in the upper 50s. your microclimate highs for today, slightly warmer than usual. san jose, 72 degrees. east san jose, 71. milpitas, 70. warmer compared to the past two weeks where we've been seeing upper 60s for the highs. today in concorde, 71. oakland 67, and then the sky should be mostly clear for the most part. the peninsula right now in daly city, expected to be about 64 hn the upper peninsula. santa rosa expect it to climb

into the upper 60s. traveling for thanksgiving, a quick look at temperatures you can expect if you're traveling up to napa. 70s if drives towards santa barbara or the l.a. area, and vegas, also in the 70s. we also have incoming rain. not just today, but looking ahead. a quick outlook towards start and sunday, ke can expect to see the arrival of not just one but two fronts. best chance of rain heading into the weekend. good news, majority of us enjoy a very nice and dry thanksgiving day in the bay area. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks, vianey. careful of the typos. nbc bay area responded to a san francisco man who says he was fooled online with a single key stroke. he thought he was doing business with costco. >> learned he had given his credit card information to a stranger. and it was connected to russia.

>> reporter: alan stern can spell trouble with one letter. o. >> i had been tricked. >> reporter: last year looking to visit the costco website he unknowingly misspelled it in his browser. there's an extra o in there, yet alan says the website that loaded looked legitimate. >> even had the costco logo and brand. of course, i thought, it's costco, and i thought i had gone to costco.com. >> reporter: the page asked him to do an eight page survey and given face cream if he completed it. then $98 and $94 charges appeared on his credit card for a membership. he returned it and complained to costco. >> how could you do this? support this? costco wrote back and said, this wasn't us. >> amazing. >> reporter: we shared this experience and learned a new

term. typo piracy. what the tech worlds calls the misuse of misspelled web addresses to possibly rip you off. >> these people no limits how they try and get y. >> reporter: she says some sites collect a finding fee for sharing your information with other sites. the worse kind, a typo that lands to a scam. >> i know from a consumer perspective, i'm not going to figure out where these people are. >> reporter: we tried with the costoco website. we searched public registries and find it linked to a person in russia. that name is associated with other typo websites including marriott with an extra i. verizon, missing an e, and

southwester.com. one letter off from sou southwest.com. the real website. when we loaded it, it used southwester name and costoco. several posted glows comments and same people endorsed costoco in the exact order. the real businesses said they had no connection to the sites, never authorizing the use of their name. we sent messages to moscow but never heard back. when we cross-referenced the e-mail addresses used to register the costoco site we found more than 500 others, each off just a letter or two like google, toyota, sprint, waiting to capitalize on your careless tap on a keyboard. >> you really don't pay

>> reporter: for peyton walton, the best part of being a nurse is helping her patients in ways that go beyond medicine. there was the time she went above and beyond to help and ailing patient find a home for her dog so she could die in peace. and then -- well, then there was the time an entire community needed her personal brand of healing. >> okay. these were the originals. >> reporter: let it be known that what one day might very well be a key part of the relief effort in any natural disaster anywhere -- >> then i spread these out more. >> reporter: began as a flood of papers scattered all over peyton walton's living room floor. >> this is how the original 20 matches were done. >> reporter: the reason peyton's mill valley condo looked like this one month ago, is because the homes of so many people she knew looked like this. peyton has been a nurse in santa

rosa for 25 years. when that city started to burn -- she went to work. for 40 hours over the next four days, peyton cared for patients at the only hospital in santa rosa that remained open. anyone would agree she had done enough to help. anyone except peyton. >> i had a home to come home to. i had a good night's sleep in my bed and i just kept thinking about my own colleagues. my own nursing friends. they were doing what i was doing and then went home and slept in a red cross shelter at the fairgrounds, and i thought, we have to do something to help them. >> reporter: which is when peyton posted to her neighbors on nextdoor, the neighborhood associate network. >> here's my original post. >> if there was a family out there who wanted to help, peyton could introduce them to a family that desperately needed some. >> and within five minutes i started getting responses on next door.

within the first hour i had 50 families who said, absolutely. who can we help? tell us how? >> reporter: peyton started to keep track with those papers, but that soon gave way to a spread sheet and eventually a website to handle the ever-growing list. at first, she was just wanting to help fellow nurses and doctors, but peyton's family matching has grown well beyond that. >> so my guesstimate is now i'm up to 5,000 individual volunteers, and we have helped almost 600 individual people who lost their homes at this point. and it's still growing. >> yes. loading it -- >> reporter: volunteers like this woman, helping families like this one. dad, a contractor, lost all his tools when his house burned down. so trisha and her husband are helping cody replace them. >> it means a lot. it kind of, you know, gives me my work back. gives me pretty much my life.

kind of how i support my family. so it means a lot. >> reporter: peyton says both sides in these donations say what makes this special is that it's not just about the money or the stuff. >> thank you very much. i really appreciate it. >> reporter: it's about the people who come attached to t. just having that family there tell us that we understand, that could have been us, and we're here for you. i was just floored by how many families said, we have your back. >> reporter: all made possible, of course, by one woman, who had everyone's back. in santa rosa. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news.
