good morning. and happy thanksgiving. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus and laura have the day off and vianey arana is here to let us know about the thanksgiving forecast. >> a good one. a good one. all good news, good things, except a couple of showers passing through the north bay that move out quickly and not too much to worry about. temperatures now, fairly mild waking up this morning, and san francisco, 58 degrees. palo alto, 56. san jose 57 and just to kind of give you an idea of the 24-hour temperature change, it's a little warmer in some spots than usual. san jose about five degrees wormer. as-o -- warmer than yesterday. overall, temperature trend, though, showing plent conditi i conditions through the afternoon. partly clear skies and upper 70s. i'll break that down coming up in a bit. >> thank you, vianey. new this morning, one woman died in a crash in livermore,

and we think we know the reason why. we just got video of the scene in to our newsroom. police say the car was speeding down stanley boulevard in livermore and lost control. the car overturned. one woman was ejected. she's the one who died. there's another woman who is in critical condition, and police say they found alcohol inside the vehicle. >> just one reason the chp is implementing what they call maximum enforcement period that started last night and runs through sunday night. remember, call aaa's for a tow and ride even if not a aaa member. among the 27 people killed last year during this time, 14 of them weren't even wearing a seat belt. happening today, people across the bay area are getting ready to take part in turkey trots and burn off some calories ahead of those thanksgiving feasts. >> "today in the bay" is live at the largest turkey trot event in san jose this morning. what can we expect, bob, this morning? also what is it?

23,000 people? >> huge! >> insane. >> reporter: 23,000 runner and still time to register. home rauwatching and have the energy and want to run in a 5ko 10k, you can still go on the website and register. downtown san jose, you can see san jose police already starting to shut off a number of the roads here in the downtown area. something to keep in mind if you're got to be driving down here, and if you look over here. where the actual starting gate's going to be of the various races that will be running through, throughout the morning. so if you're not familiar with the silicon valley turkey trot, it's a fun event. people come up here, dress up. they eve haven't a kids' run later in the morning. a festival area around hp pavilion on the arena green guadeloupe area, park river. a great way to burn calories and more important, help support local food banks and charities.

earlier with spoke with the founder of the race. he founded it 13 years ago with his wife leslie when only 1,900 back then ran the race. >> i'm just curious from your point of view. 13 years ago. did you ever see this being this successful? >> we have been so thrilled and blessed that this many people in our community wanted to turn out and help their neighbors in need. yes. in the first 12 years, we've been able to raise and give away nearly $7 million. this year alone, it will be another $900,000, and it still has that small community feel, but a big community impact. >> reporter: we put the race map on the tv screen to give awe general idea where the course will be running. primarily downtown san jose. crossing the guadeloupe river, up and down the alameda. again, starting here at santa clara first. ending at santa clara and dellmoss, not far from the hp

pavilion. at home, you can still register for the race. 23,000 so far. they have space for nanother 5,000. interestingly, in the race, mike dosik, recognize the name, or the story. last year about a mile out from the end of the race had a heart attack. obviously, a bunch of people were around there, including medics with the race and volunteer nurses happened to be running with him who saved his life. he's starting at the 8:35 5k-10k. a miracle, almost died, starting the race here. reporting from downtown san jose for "today in the bay." victims of the north bay wildfires have a choance to enjy a free thanksgiving meal. a few hosting at the veterans memorial hall. the rohnert park senior center

hosting a few hundred people as well and franchitti 's and springer's tap room as well. and u.s. and japanese crews continue to search the philippine sea for three missing sailors lost after the crash of a u.s. navy airplane. >> 11 onboard. 8 rescued in 40 minutes, in good condition. no word what might have caused the crash but the latest in a string of problems surrounding the 7th fleet. no sign of an inmate who escaped in pail oo palo alto. john bivens on the right side remains on the run. look at the surveillance picture we got from a gas station. police say both men were in a green ford explorer, mcleod driving. sped off when chp officers tried to stop the vehicle. at some point mcleod jumped out of the vehicle, ran into a walmart when bivens got into the

driver's seat and sped off. bivens got away. investigators say bivens is sdangerrous. . >> he escaped from custody. evaded chp. in a plain vehicle. an officer-involved shooting. so he's dangerous. definitely a ding dangerous individual, a history of acquiring weapons. >> john bivens on the run this morning after escaping in palo alto more than two weeks ago. happening today, helping those in need for the thanksgiving holiday. 500 volunteers are getting ready to help hundreds of thousands of meals for needy people in -- not hundreds of thousands, thousands of meals in san francisco. >> feels like hundreds of thousands i'm sure. and pete is in glide memorial in san francisco it's all taking place. good morning, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, scott and kris. taking operation here at glide church. we told you that, how much food will be served as they bring in some vegetables here they'll be

dicing fairly shortly. talking about 300 turkeys. 200 hams and 3,000 pounds of potatoes. sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, you name it. i believe volunteers are walking in and there goes some of the hams to be served on folks during this thanksgiving celebration psell. a tradition here in san francisco. and thank you so much for joining us president of glide. what is it like here when people show up? you say that -- you guys do this every, all year long. what is it like today? >> today is kind of amazing. a lot of people show up because they want to help. it's a very special day for us. the bad news, food insecurity still exists. one in four san franciscans are hungry, looking for their next meal and that's more than twice the national average. the good news, we're still here. not going anywhere. still here to search the people who need us and continue not just today but every day of the year. >> reporter: just talking about that off camera. what's some of the work you do

year-round? i know hundreds of thousands of meals you serve? >> we serve something like 730,000 meal as year, but there are other programs we offer. we offer harm induction services around substance abuse. people who use drugs. we offer counseling. we offer housing, case management. we offer services for women who have been abused. we offer domestic violence services and also offer walk-in services for people on the streetygiene kit or driver's licenses. we also have a child care service in a different building down the street where we have licensed child care, after-school program. full service all the way around. >> reporter: we actually talked to james in our last report. he has been to this celebration now, come full circle and now is helping out. our photographer henry was showing the food here, the tomatoes, the cucumbers -- what

are they serving here tonight? >> we have turkey, ham. we've got stuffing, cranberries. potatoes, sweet potatoes. the full traditional meal. and a salad, what the vegetables are for. gravy. you name it. all of the fixings, traditional style. >> thank you for doing an interview and very last minute able to pull you to the side. thank you. >> my pleasure. >> reporter: doing great work here serving 5,000 meals. a lot of meals. food here. volt tiers showing up. back at 6:30 with another live report. live in san francisco, for "today in the bay." >> 5,000 alone now. but they do this year-round. pete, saying 750,000 all year long? >> reporter: yes. yep. year-round, they do 750,000 meals year-round and 5,000 peoples today. >> astonishing. >> i'm only doing, like 11. i feel -- a little like, inadequate. >> i think pete will start peeling potatoes there. >> put him to work if he stays too long. and shopping.

if it's not your thing. certain parks opened for black friday for free. >> one of my favorite traditions. east bay regional pashgt district does it every year to encourage people to spend time outside in nature calling it green friday. parking and entrance fees waived. so are fees for dogs, horses, boat launching and fishing. >> sounds like much better than going out to the mall for sure. beautiful weather for viany. >> i agree. sounds like a much better plan than heading to the store and getting trampled on. no fun for me. and weather great for the hikes, especially free. maybe i'll take binks on a nice hike. 56 degrees. nice and mild. a few clouds. they're high clouds. can't see them just yet. sunrise at 6:59. tri-valley 53 degrees, and in san francisco, also nice and mild at ak bout 57 degrees. north bay, can you see clouds in there. 50 degrees, an incoming system that kicks up the chance of

good morning. 6:14. we're about 45 minutes away from sunrise. if you're up and stretching, getting ready for that turkey trot, a quick check what you can expect. by 8:00, 9:00 a.m., upper 50s. around 10:00 a.m., 60s in the forecast but overall, mostly clear skies. a perfect weather for all of the runners out there getting ready for that nice run. send things to you, but an update on the rain in a bit. >> all right. waiting for that. thank you, vianey. all new this morning, youtube is making guidelines for kids programming tougher. the site faced criticism from people who say violent and exploitive videos aimed at older audiences are included with the family friendly options. youtube says it recently kicked off 50 channels and removed thousands of videos. youtube outlined changes in a blog post and the include stricter enforcement of the rules, violent ads from videos

will be gone. blocking inappropriate comments, and providing better guidance for the folks who are making the videos. the north bay fires may be out but concern remains. can this happen again? >> critics say that cal fire, the state's latest fire department is great at putting fires out but not very good at preventing them. liz wagner has the story. >> reporter: our investigation uncovered a tang manied web of fighter prevention experts say fall short of what's needed to make a difference. extreme weather rotting trees and longer fir ticking on the n disaster. you're looking at the forest in the central sierra. a stunning landscape from the air but a powder keg down below. >> fire wants to burn uphill. >> reporter: this doctor of uc-berkeley and his team are learning how to save the wildlands. >> on the ground.

>> reporter: by setting fire to them. >> the goal ultimately is not to eliminate fire from the landscapes. they're fire-adapted and been that way for thousands of years. >> reporter: california fire used to burn all the time before scientists started doing research, this hadn't burned in a century. we're looking at fire prevention? >> it is. >> reporter: dr. scott steeves runs uc-berkeley's science lab studying ways to make forests more fire-resistant and slow the spread when wildfires do happen. >> reporter: this is the third time in 15 years the team set fire to this exact plot of land. they say burns like this need to happen more often in more places. >> to do this and really make a difference in the landscape we would have to do this at much bigger areas. that's the thing that worries us. we're not doing it. not even close. >> reporter: why? >> we don't have a lot of experience doing this in california. we have to train a workforce. >> reporter: stephen says

building the workforce is a challenge. right now fire prevent is divvied up among a variety of agencies. most of time workers from nonprofits fill in the gaps. >> we cleared this area down here. which was really thick with all the dead vegetation. >> reporter: they built a two-mile fuel break near homes in the santa cruz mountains. >> that vegetation grows up and up and up. >> reporter: they point out the area faces the same dangers as the sonoma county communities that burned to the ground last month. cal fire is responsible for protecting that neighborhood in santa clara county. the agency oversees about a third of the land in the state. that's why forest economics expert bill stewart says calfire should take the lead on an aggressive prevent program but says it's not equipped to do it. >> basically it's a fire department. >> reporter: stewart says the agency made some progress, but lacks the scientists and staffers needed to coordinate a

staid-wide effort. >> that's not really what they were designed to do yet are dragged into it. we're working to change the paradigm to put more time and energy into preventing fires. >> reporter: this man served as one of calfire's deputy directors says they focused on beefing up inspections, brush clearance and prescribed burns but critics say it's not enough. their perspective, calfire should be setting the tone from the top. we need to start work on these big forest projects, and that's what it trickled down. >> the last couple of years, set high goals for firefighters to do more in fire pooecrevention. >> reporter: the director says the agency fell short on some of those goals. meeting 70% of the prescribed fire targets. >> should calfire advocate to the governor for more resources? more funds to do the really important work that your agency

acknowledged needs to happen? >> both this administration as well as the legislature invested more money into doing fire prevention work. >> reporter: calfire recently received a $200 million windfall from sacramento. aside from this one-time boost, the agency spent $75 million on fire prevention each year, but that's just 4% of the total budget. meanwhile, scientists working in the forest hope their new techniques for mitigating mega fires become a priority. >> it's really something that gets a little more traction every year, but it doesn't feel like it ever gets out of the gate. >> reporter: calfire recently signed an agreement with several agencies to increase the pace and scale of controlled burns, and also grants money to local fire democrats and fire safe councils. sources agree, it's going to take an extra push from lawmakers for calfire to make fire prevention a real priority. >> if you have a story for you are investigative unit, they'd love to hear from you.

talk about that 24-hour temperature change. the reason i want to pop this up, above seasonal temperatures and expected highs just that. san jose 5 degrees wormer than yesterday at this hour. so is livermore. really the south bay area and kris was saying in southern california, expecting 90s. yes. we're not expecting 90s here, thank goodness. warmest temperatures in the 70s and then once those spotty showers clear out for the majority of the north bay, you can expect to keep a few clouds in the system also along the coast. napa a high of about 71. oakland 67. san francisco 65 and over the next seven days, a couple of changes on the way. so for today, as soon as that chance of rain kind of clears out, topping out in the 60s for san francisco. notice by friday, keeping the clouds and the system and heading into saturday and sunday, this is where we have an additional system coming in to play, but our rain chances are more than likely going to be into saturday night and then as we head into sunday, expect to

thanksgiving-- listen up. 6:25 now. planning on frying your turkey this thanksgiving, you want to listen up. the national fire protection association released this video intended to show how dangerous it can be if you don't do it right. safety groups strongly recommend against deep frying your turkey but if you're still going to do it, important things to remember. make sure you use that turkey fryer outside and away from your

never cooked a turkey, ri i'm gy of that but i also bought my pre-made. i'm also guilty of that. enjoying a turkey today, today will probably be the last day enjoying a regular breakfast. tomorrow you'll have a lot of leftovers. temperatures are mild now. if you wake up for an early morning run or today, as a matter of fact, for the turkey trot, perfect weather for that. a little bit of clouds in the system. right now overall, looking very beautiful. however, if you are going to be out doing the turkey trot, good for you! and we can expect to see those temperatures climb into the upper 50s. about 57. by 10:00 a.m., 60s. by 11:00, talking 65 degrees. so overall, we can expect to keep mostly clear skies and not expecting rain for the south bay. going to be perfect weather conditions out there. no one has to worry about getting muddy, just making it to the finish line. good luck if you're heading out to the turkey trot this morning. back to you. >> vianey, thank you.

and the glide memorial church getting ready for its annual thanksgiving meal to give folks a little help this holiday season. >> showing all the preparation going on, good morning, pete! >> trying to put you to work. aren't they? >> reporter: just a -- yes! they're going to put me to work soon. good morning to you guys. happy thanksgiving to you. you know what? actually dirk over here is working 0en that ham. very big ham, putting it to work there and these are a part of all the meals they'll serve to folks here. thousands of meals served in this wonderful thanksgiving celebration glide church has been doing a long time here. really, a tradition in san francisco. bringing karen -- >> hanrahan. >> reporter: we just met. president and ceo. step this way. talk about today's event. this annual thanksgiving celebration. what it means to the city of san francisco and really the bay area? >> sure. so this is -- this is a

tradition in san francisco. it's been going on for over 50 years. serves over 5,000 meals today. we have over 500 volunteers. glide has really become a home for people to take a moment to be grateful for what they have. to come together across the spectrum, from those who are suffering to those who are donors, we all come together on this day to provide community, to serve those in need. and to really -- build on that tradition in san francisco. >> reporter: very familiar with tradition. reverend cecil williams here, the good work he's done here at glide church. talk about how much food they're serving. look over there. all that ham. talking about what, 200 hams? 300 turkeys? >> 200 hams, 300 turkeys. we've got thousands of pounds of

potatoes. we have thousands -- hundreds of little pies made by the girl scouts. so all of this, about 50% of what we have is donated, and about 50% purchased. and, again, it's been an outpouring of support and generosity from the city of san francisco and we're really grateful. >> clearly. >> reporter: to wrap things up, obviously talking about today 5,000 meals served out but you do it year-round? >> year-round. we serve over 750,000 meal as year. it's particularly important now, because people in san francisco are increasingly struggling to feed themselves. we also provide access to homeless shelters. we provide counseling for addiction. we provide a spiritual home in our sunday celebrations and really services across the spectrum to help those in san francisco who need it the most. those who are the hardest off. and it is as i mentioned, really

getting -- getting worse in san francisco. the gap between rich and poor. fewer people have homes. fewer people are -- having access to food. so glad is needed more than ever. >> reporter: thank you so much. the new president and ceo of glide. great work they're doing here. we'll start seeing folks come in at about 10:30 a.m. already getting to work, cutting ham, getting it. >> reporter: for all the folks they're expecting. live in san francisco, for "today in the bay." >> pete, thanks. happening now, the salvation army also preparing to deliver meals to people who have a little trouble getting out of the house. hundreds of volunteers there help deliver mealed around san francisco, and they'll start doing that in a couple hours. you recognize that guy? because it's san francisco mayor ed lee. >> there are some changes to public transit you need to know about for today. the san francisco bay ferry won't run at all. a modified holiday schedule tomorrow and saturday. then regular weekend service will resume for most routes on

sunday. caltrain, samtrans operating on a sunday schedule. 24 trains between san francisco and san jose. more options tomorrow, of course, for black friday. >> all right. the jurors in the steinle murder case are also on thanksgiving break and did not reach a verdict in the case yesterday but did deliberate all morning before heading home around noon for the long weekend. they will return on monday at 9:00 in the morning. accused of shooting and killing steinle in san francisco in 2015. the defense says it was an accident, but the prosecution claims garcia sir wroughrausirr to shoot steinle. >> this happened in menlo park. the victim, homeless, shot several times on a nearby train track. he survived. officers used a drone and chp airplane in the search for the bad guy. no arrests, though. word on what may have led up to this. the search continues this

morning for a missing santa cruz tech worker. 34-year-old, last seen leaving the headquarters of looker, a software company in santa cruz. rode away on a red by tuesdike . hasn't been seen since. if you have information, call the police. and warning in san francisco. a phone scam targeting that group pap robocall, claims to be from the chinese embassy saying a packa acage being held for pi but you need a credit card number to pick it up. this is a scam. call police if you've been notified. and cigarette ads banned from tv and radio, a big deal when it stopped at the time. this weekend, they're back -- sort of. >> cigarette companies intentionally design cigarettes with enough nicotine to create and sustain addiction. >> the ads aren't for tobacco. they are anti-tobacco.

a court order is forcing those tobacco giants to air these commercials about the health risks of smoking. the commercials are a result of a 1999 lawsuit which big tobacco lost. the judge ruled the companies were guilty of fraud, because they downplayed the known health risks. a warning this holiday for shoppers planning to visit one of the largest malls in the bay area. >> police say thieves are targeting cars in parking lots and neighborhoods around valley fair mall in san jose. heard it before. still happening down. also warning folks about parking safely around santana row. nbc bay area spoke with one woman who says someone stole her vintage louis vuitton bag from her car this week. she says the thieves broke the back window of her car. >> i was just isn't shock. there maybe an hour and a half. looked it, had to, broke it really quick and left. nothing else was missing. >> she tells us there were about five other cars also broken into at around the same time as hers.

we researched crime data overnight and found a total of 21 similar incidents of car break-in in that area in the past two weeks. 6:38. all construction in san francisco's union square has shoppers says bah-hum-bug. muni building its ten tral subway under the busy popular shopping square. the last five years this stretch has been open to pedestrians. they laid down turf. benches to sit on. this year there will be less space for that, because the construction has grown, and it's taking up more space. shoppers we spoke to weren't terribly happy about that. >> no. yeah, and a lot of displaced people don't have nice places to sit. and -- we lost the kids a couple of times behind the construction platforms. >> i guess if you don't know your way around san francisco it could be very difficult, because there is a lot of construction in the middle. >> the pedestrian area usually opens the friday after

thanksgiving. though this year it will open saturday, and then it will remain open through december 31st. >> and the weather is not going to keep you from going out on black friday. or green friday. going to the park. >> weather shouldn't be a problem today or tomorrow but it's the weekend it might be a problem. so now you may want to pay attention to the forecast. here it is. saturday's forecast overall along the coast and bay, start with mostly cloudy skies and stay fairly cloudy, but as we head into the later portion of the night, inland areas especially the north bay as well, expect to see a system move in and that's going to bring a series of showers. so you've got to get ready for it, because today the north bay is already seeing showers. then the remainder of the bay area is expected to see widespread rain. on sunday's forecast, you can see the coast, bay and inland all expecting to see rain. another thing you can expect to see sunday as well is breezy to windy conditions. something to keep in mind.

if you had plans to be outside at all, or maybe parties planned this weekend, you may want to bring it indoors. as of right now, modelling showing a pretty good amount of rainfall, and sticking, unfortunately all sunday long all through monday and possibly even tuesday. if you're heading to the beach, your best bet is friday and saturday. as we head into saturday, though, start noticing temperatures really drop. we go from 70s to 60s. there's goes sunday. brings on the rain. drop down to about 61 degrees. you're going to notice a temperature drop about 10 degrees between now and the weekend. as that cold front moves in, also expect to see changes in the forecast. heading to lake tahoe. a lot of people are waking up in lake tahoe or heading to lake tahoe. pay attention. tracking snow with the system. so on saturday, as we head into the later portion of the evening, talking about rain, but on sunday, tracking more snowfall ahead, great for skiers and snowboarders. you always want to check road conditions. enjoy today before that rain

good morning. it is 6:43. this morning i an grateful and thankful for all of you. this thanksgiving morning, mild now. climbs to the 60s and 70e ess t. a breakdown when we can expect to see rain again in the forecast coming up in just a bit. turkeys, not only things roasting in southern california today. forecasters predict temperatures could be up to 25 degrees above normal today. people have been packing the beaches to get relief from the heat. the average temperature is usually about 71 degrees this time of year. lovely. but the temperature's already soaring well into the 90s. that was yesterday. expected to continue today. >> crazy. now to a bay area family that has a lot to be thankful for today. >> detained six months by i.c.e., a san rafael man is back

at home in time for thanksgiving. a construction worker working at travis air force base when he and another worker were taken into custody. he has been in the country more than a decade. his co-worker was deported back in august, bought judge ordered him released on bond while his case makes its way through the immigration court. he says he's grateful for this small victory. >> i have no words to describe my feelings right now. happy is the first thing, the only word i have right now, and i have to say thank you to everybody who supports me. >> he and his wife have three children. two oldest children granted daca status and his youngest is a u.s. citizen. happening today, thousands of people getting ready for the silicon valley turkey trot in san jose. >> "today in the bay," live along the race to show us exactly where runners will be during the race, and what good they're doing at the same time.

>> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, kris and scott. happy thanksgiving to you. we're here at first and santa clara, downtown san ls. you see the starting line is being set up behind me's in in about 50 minutes from now, the first race. the women's elite 5k. the men's elite 5k at 8:00, and then 8:30 is the big 5k, 10k with the most runners. so far this year, 23,000 people have signed up for the silicon valley turkey trot. there's still 5,000 spaces left. if you're at home and feeling really bad about what you're shoving into your face later today and want to prep your body, a precaloric burn, you can still sign up for the turkey trot taking place. again, main race at 8:30 this morning. go to svturkeytrot.com. this is the 13th annual race. not only are you getting good exercise, you're donating to local charties.

you probably already started your weekend. if you look ahead by saturday into sunday at about 1:30 a.m., this storm system moving in and look how quickly it begins to spread by about 12:30. talking the entire bay area, expected to see plenty of rain and then look how it kind of lingers through monday morning. unfortunately, looks like monday morning if that's your return to work that is going to be a very wet commute. so you're definitely going to want to monitor that. of course, we're also tracking sierra snow with this incoming system. look at sunday and monday. talking about a couple of inches of snowfall, which is going to be great for the skiers and snowboarde snowboarders. check road conditions, of course. the next several days, drop in temperatures with the arrival of that system this weekend. >> we'll watch for it. up next, time for an annual tradition. macy's thanksgiving day parade. we'll take you live along the parade route to show you all the festivities? first, happening now. texas representative joe barton is apologizing after a naked

parade, marching down the streets of manhattan today. >> "today in the bay," jay will show us what's going on. >> reporter: it's worth the watch. beautiful morning here in the city. cold before the sun came up but now the temperature's gone up and it is fantastic. you can see the parade rolling behind us here as you take a look down central park west. a familiar sight. the pillsbury doughboy, one of the giant balloons a part of this parade. 18 in all. 85 to 90 people pilot these balloons, they say, through the streets of manhattan. about a 2.5 mile parade route. 30.5 million people out this morning to watch this thing live. it's the official kickoff to the holiday season for so many families across the country. 50 million or more will watch it on tv. i hope, kris and scott, you get a chance to watch a little of the parade during your
