circled as the big debut for quarterback jimmy garafolo, and while he keeps getting comfortable with the offense. >> i have only been in two offenses now, after three and a half years of being there you get comfortable and feel like you mastered the language they have. just trying to pick it up as fast as you can. the competitor, you know you want to get out there and help the teammates, help the team win, it's a tough situation coming in mid-way through the season, it's going to be a process but we'll get there. >> so garappolo is going to have to wait a little bit longer, you were surprised. a lot of people thought they had the bye week, they will play

security system. he says that black friday deals save him hundreds of dollars. >> i see it as trying to be very cost effective and trying to stretch your dollar out and have fun while you're doing it. >> reporter: but once inside, there were more lines, lines for shopping, tvs and electronics. the store expects 25% of all holiday shoppers will be out this black friday. and they say more than 50% of them are actually buying things for themselves. so no waiting for christmas day for that new tv. >> no, i'm opening it when i get home. when i get home, i put it on my wall. >> reporter: now a lot of stores have special hours tonight, target and dublin open until midnight, other outlets opened through midnight. reporting live in dublin, i'm anser hassan.

thanksgiving in their own home they have never been more grateful. >> you want to pray with daddy. say god. thank you for all of our friends and loved ones. >> reporter: chris keys and his family are giving thanks. the past six weeks have been rough. >> you guys look happy. >> reporter: but after surviving the tubs fire, the family got a whole new perspective. >> our life has been completely changed forever. and i think that going back to gratitude is bringing it to a whole new level is kind of where we're at this year. >> reporter: the keys lost just about everything in the fire, escaping their home in the middle of the night with little is but their kids and their cars. >> you okay, emma? when you're stripped of everything you own, the only thing you have to hold onto is each other. >> reporter: the keys spent a lot of time digging through ashes hoping to salvage. what they did find, it was

priceless. >> it was awesome to find it. >> reporter: this glass angel ornament was the only thing they found intact. chris' wife, sarah, found it in the ashes. >> it's a confirmation from god. >> reporter: that faith has already gotten them through so much. chris keys has been without before. a shelter and recovery director at the mission used to be homeless. >> i was homeless for 14 years. and you know, signing the papers for being a homeowner was a day i'll never forget. but obviously october 9th is a day i will never forget either. >> reporter: fortunately, the family is now in a rental that is furnished with donations. chris keys prepared the family's thanksgiving meal tonight while his wife, an er nurse, at kaiser, worked. with a photo of their old home pinned up on the wall the family feels blessed. >> i know it sounds crazy, but

the level of gratitude i have on this thanksgiving far exceeds any other experience i have ever had on thanksgiving. >> reporter: the keys family plans to rebuild here. hopefully by next thanksgiving. in santa rosa, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. today is not just a day to be thankful. for many it is also a day of giving. for more than 500 volunteers partnering with the memorial church in san francisco, this morning the church fed 5,000 people during their annual thanksgiving celebration and organizers say more people are finding themselves in need this holiday. >> san francisco is above the natural average in food and security, so decreincreasingly, people are finding it harder and harder to find a place to live and to eat and stabilize their lives. >> those that came down to glide got a very nice meal, all the

fixings, including turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. and lots of wrangling in the city, over feeding the homeless in public. the two sides came together to make sure no one in san jose went hungry on this thanksgiving. robert handa has more on whether it's a sign of things to come. >> anything is good, whatever you want to feed us is fine for me. >> reporter: mercy wong is enjoying they are thanksgiving meal today. they served free meals today where the city tried to crack down on groups feeding the homeless. the city backed down on citations but wong said the damage was done. >> sometimes it's bad, they give up on the people that want to feed us. that is not right. >> reporter: technically the city argued feeding the homeless in public without a license or

permit is already illegal and officials said they were responding to neighborhood complaints. but today, wong said everything is easier only because of thanksgiving. >> when there is no holiday, it's very rare, but they would be searching for food to go different places. but here, everything is fear. and it's so very convenient. >> at least for today. >> yeah, for today. >> there you go, coming back, there is water and soda. >> reporter: it was not this convenient here at the camp where about 100 people were seen by the ministries. >> and i learned they get kicked out from one camp to another and the city gives them notice, a week's time and they are just rushed out of here. >> reporter: the pastor points out the city has joined with homeless groups recently. >> thanksgiving we have all come together and fed meals and come together as a community. but we all have to have a

consistent strategy. if the strategy is to save lives, let's pull all the resources together to get people out of the streets and out of the camps. >> thank you, god bless you, too. >> happy thanksgiving. >> my meal, to feed my belly. and thank you. happy thanksgiving, everybody. >> reporter: the time after thanksgiving could be a crucial one for repairing relations between the homeless and the city. san jose is considering a number of different proposals on what to do with the homeless and they will need the advocates to help push those through. in san jose, robert handa, nbc bay area news. thank you, in the peninsula, a huge thanksgiving meal for the needy. participants prepared people for the martin luther king jr. center. the american house set up five dining halls throughout the city for neighbors to sit down and enjoy a thanksgiving meal. >> breaking down the isolation that people in poverty feel every day. they're feeling depressed. they're low down, not sure how

they feel before their neighbors. this is a chance to come out and have a good time like everybody else. >> in total, samaritan house fed nearly a thousand people today. and family and friends are mourning the loss of a 16-year-old east bay girl tonight after the suv she was riding in crashed overnight. another girl is in the hospital with major injuries from that wreck. nbc bay area tom jensen has more on what the chp is saying is a warning. thom? >> well, garvin, we've all heard these rules from chp numerous times, don't drink and drive, and three rules that were broken tonight as it shows just how important those rules really are. >> reporter: it's amazing that any of the five people riding in the twisted blue suv walked away from the wreckage. friends still trying to make sense of what happened. why so many mistakes were

allegedly made. >> i heard about it last night. didn't believe it. woke up this morning. bunch of calls. >> reporter: phone calls that his classmate and close friend of five years was killed after being thrown from the suv as it crashed, flipping over and over again just before midnight. her friend, who only goes by the name atm, went to school with the 16-year-old victim in village high in pleasanton where she was a junior and he was a sr. >> she is a germareaermanreat p loving. >> reporter: he spelled out her first name, violet, in stones. part of the growing memorial near state highway 84, out of respect for the family we are not releasing her last name until chp confirms all family members have been notified. chp says that she and at least one other female passenger were not wearing seat belts. the driver was speeding and

likely worse. >> at this time alcohol is suspended as playing a role in this. >> reporter: the sergeant says that alcohol was also found inside the torn-up suv. atm says it's a wake-up call for himself and other teens who too often feel bullet proof to life's dangerous mistakes. >> if you drink, don't get behind the wheel, call uber or a taxi, walk, if anything. >> reporter: this is a reminder for all of us, isn't it? i talked to my teenage daughter tonight and reminded her after coming to this scene just how important it is to follow those rules, especially not getting into a car when somebody is drinking and driving. we're live in livermore. th thom jensen. >> thank you, thom, you can also call triple a's tipsy toe and

peninsula, and tri-valley, temperatures close to fifty as we begin the day, high temperatures tomorrow, another run towards the low 70s along the south bay, mid-60s with clouds along san francisco, and upper 60s into the north bay. friday's forecast, dry, sunny at times, overcast skies getting into friday evening. the next chance of rain increasing as we head towards 9:00 saturday. starting off in the north bay from 11:00, to 11 sunday, that should be the main event with the next weather system that will bring rain all the way into the south bay with more showers to follow into the south bay. looking to be close to a half inch here for santa rosa, and generally less than a quarter inch of rain as we get into the south bay. the seven-day forecast as we wrap things up for the holiday weekend gets back into the rain again. saturday, mainly a dry day for san francisco. breezy times on sunday, lingering showers on into monday morning, for the valleys, we'll have nice 70s tomorrow. look at the drop in

kaepernick made a surprise appearance this morning in alcatraz, more on the details of the early morning event. >> reporter: garvin, the former 49ers was presented with an award for his activism from the native people. the video from his twitter feed, fred short, a spiritual leader of the american indian movement, presented kaepernick for his efforts to highlight inequality in america. kaepernick wore a t-shirt with the image of sitting bull. the lakota tribe leader who led his people on a mission against the united states government in the 1800s. >> i realize that our fight is the same fight. we're all fighting for justice, for our freedom. and realizing that we're in this fight together makes us all the more powerful.

officers tried to stop the vehicle. at some point, mccloud tried to go into the walmart, and bivins took off as the chp officer fired at the vehicle. investigators say bivins is dangerous so don't stop him. >> he escaped from custody, evaded chp, there was an officer-involved shooting shooting. he is a very dangerous individual with a prior history of acquiring weapons. >> if you have any information about bivins' whereabouts you are asked to call police. >> the jurors in the kate steinle murder case are on a break for thanksgiving. they deliberated on the long weekend and will return on monday morning. jose garcia is accused of shooting and killing steinle in san francisco in 2015. the between says it was an accident, but the prosecution

claims garcia intended to shoot steinle. u.s. and japanese crews have stopped the search for the three sailors missing since the u.s. navy plane crashed in the philippines sea. some were rescued, and in good condition, still no word on what caused the crash, there is the latest in the problems surrounding the fleet. girls in the catholic school say they reported sexual abuse to school leaders more than 20 years ago and claimed nothing happened. >> senior reporter vickyguyen has more. >> reporter: the two girls say they separately reported misconduct to trusted school leaders, marion stucke and

miller. she says her close friend, known as jane, was sexually molested by the spanish teacher in 1990. she says the girls reported the incident. >> she was called in to speak to the principal, and afterwards said in tears she didn't feel the principal believed her and that the principal suggested that jane must have been dreaming it. she says after a month of nothing happening, they addressed the concerns. >> she said to be careful about what they say. >> he groped me and showed me pictures of a naked woman. >> reporter: catherine said she was alone with him in a classroom. >> his arm is around mine. his arm moved my hand up to my breast. he is grabbing my hand and kissing it. >> reporter: do you think what happened to you could have been prevented? >> yes. >> and why do you think that. >> because i know that two other

people reported the same abuse. >> reporter: she says after the alleged abuse, she wrote a letter to miller, now the principal, reporting what happened to her. >> there were active attempts by this administration to suppress the sharing of information about crimes that were committed on this campus. >> reporter: the attorney said the law was not followed. >> if you have a reasonable existi suspicion that a sex crime has occurred, it is your obligation, the law tells you that you are to report it to police. you are not to ask the victim questions, or the teacher questions. fernandez died in 2015. the school admits they didn't report the incident to police. in a report, chp conducted an investigation more than 25 years ago in this matter and other

claims made today. and due to the privacy law, they can't show the outcome. she said the school covered up the abuse. >> the prestigious south bay school. >> reporter: the investigative unit showed that they placed two current teachers on administrative leave on november ten. we obtained a letter where a staff member writes she saw inappropriate behavior by the teacher. many girls say they found the teacher creepy, and he made the girls feel uncomfortable. she ended the feeling saying i have a terrible feeling about what is going on you, and i thi action has to be taken. the school did not have an answer why the report was not made at the san jose school. san jose police are investigating. >> thank you, vicki, our investigative unit has been at the front of the story.

mall in san jose. and warning is going out to others as well, one woman said someone stole her vintage vitton bag in the back, she left it in the window and they smashed it. >> i was in shock, i was only there in an hour and a half. they had to have looked in, they just broke in and grabbed it. nothing else was missing. >> five other cars were broken into along with hers. we did research on crime data overnight and found a total of 21 similar incidents of car thefts and burglaries in the area in just the past two weeks. nbc bay area responds to a mountain view woman whose brand-new gift cards were unusable. >> she reached out to our response team for help and we saved her a chunk of money. we explain what we did. >> reporter: she bought four $100 visa gift cards, but when

she tried to access them she got a message they had expired. so we called visa, they sent her four replacement cards but they didn't work either. they were also flagged expired, she said, so celia gave up and asked visa for a full refund. well, she says she waited for two months and didn't hear a word or see a penny, and she asked us to help. we contacted visa, who contacted their gift card company, and they refunded her gift card money, and gave her a $25 card for her hassle. they fedexed the card to her, so it should work just fine. incom said there was not a problem with them, she just didn't activate them correctly. in a statement, imcomm said we apologize for any inconvenience related to this '79event.

francisco looking gorgeous, pretty close to what the high temperature should be this time of year, 64 in san francisco, take you into dublin, 62 degrees, high clouds right now into san jose, similar transcribed witrend with the temperatures currently in the 60s. mid-40s and 50s in the south bay a chance of a stray shower north of the golden gate. friday, probably the warmest day we'll see for a while. temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s, very nice outside. a few high clouds at times, east bay temperatures, similarly spread if not slightly warmer than the numbers we had today. low 70s in the tri-valley, near oakland, peninsula temperatures, mid-to-upper 60s, mostly sunny at times during the day and then increasing high clouds as we head towards friday evening. and then around san francisco, areas of low clouds, 65 degrees and north bay temperatures mostly in the 60s. if you are going to head to the

sierra, here is the first sign of quick chance, friday an easy drive, saturday okay, and 40 to 50 miles, the first of the changes we'll see. sunday evening, cooler air arrives, suddenly you're dealing with snow and wind. we could see chain controls by sunday evening in the high clouds despite the fact the numbers are in the 50s and 60s in the last couple of days. so this may catch folks off guard as they come back from the sierra, from the bay area, good day to be outside, most of saturday also looks dry, except north bay by 9:00 you begin to see the rain sweep through sonoma county, and by 11:00 saturday to sunday you see the moderate rain pushing to south bay. transitions from rain to scattered showers, and likely more showers will follow. rain shower projections coming in late through saturday night,

half an in through north parts of the someday, probably a quarter of an in less, a third of an in to half an inch to the peninsula and east bay. now as we move it into monday, notice how the numbers still go up a few more tenth of an inch there as we deal with scattered showers. main system comes through, there on sunday, monday, showers for the first half of the day. now we catch another break, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, fairly dry, weaker systems going by, and then late next week as we are now into december, friday into next weekend, probably the next window we'll see wind and rain making a comeback. seven-day forecast for tomorrow and most of saturday looking good, except watch out for that wind in the sierra, mid-70s, a few spots tomorrow trending a lot cooler, highs only in the low 60s, rain at times for sunday, the travel home could be affected especially out of the sierra, monday morning's commute could also see a few showers,

clear skies again by tuesday. >> great, bob, thank you very much. well, thanksgiving in the wine country certainly very different this year. for fire victims it meant finding a place to share a meal. as we learn, many businesses and community groups rose to the occasion. >> reporter: in santa rosa, they helped quickly after the fires and believed it was important to offer a special thanksgiving meal. >> now it seems like it was even needed more. and so that was -- this was the whole premise, to give people the space to be able to do it. >> reporter: the restaurant is providing hundreds of free meals to north bay fire survivors and first responders. they bought some food, but then donations came in from businesses and neighbors. >> i was going to bake the pies, the local chef said no, return all of your ingredient hs, i'm doing the pies for you.

>> reporter: this family lost their home in fountain grove. she said she enjoyed the restaurant before and is grateful for the offer today. >> i think it's amazing. i think the silver lining if there is one in this horrific tragedy is how the community is coming together, and the overwhelming outpouring of support. >> we made enough food for 400 people. >> reporter: at singletree cafe in hillsborough, they're usually closed for thanksgiving. but today along with another business they're serving free meals giving people a place to be. >> i'm just thankful for a community that sticks together that is strong and wants bounce back and they want to make it a great place for everybody to be. >> reporter: in santa rosa, christi smith, nbc bay area news. and in san francisco, more hot thanksgiving meals were passed out to those in need. the san francisco police, sheriffs and fire department all came out to carve turkeys and put together meals for senior

citizens. this annual food drive happens near china town. the officers get together to carve 150 turkeys for about 3,000 meals. >> out of these officers, who were off duty, we're off duty, we come here on thanksgiving day to be a part of helping our community. so thanksgiving is just that. you give. >> reporter: officers also took meals to the hundreds of other people in san francisco, the elderly who can't make it to the events. and others sat down to enjoy the meal. american troops are still fighting a war in afghanistan. more from afghanistan. >> reporter: the mission starts before dawn. lieutenant rob bickell and his team trying to keep the streets outside kandahar safe. others were injured in a suicide car bomb attack nearby. >> the loud muffle of a blast.

>> reporter: the specialist is thankful to be alive on his first thanksgiving outside of the u.s. but today, he reinlisted. a reminder that even on holidays troops here are on guard. >> we don't have any pinpoint locations, but i mean, you can see any one of these houses. >> reporter: he is referring to the taliban. >> they're firing mortars about five miles away, about 30 second air time. the goal is deterrence. the taliban positions are just up there. >> reporter: the roads are too risky for choppers, so they gave messages to a forward operating base. elsewhere in kandahar, the captain dishes up dinner, saying the war is still a stalemate but will turn against the taliban in months. >> the new authorities i've been given allow me to go after the enemy in ways. so previously i could work with
