dreyer. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> thanks for joining us. i'm craig melvin alongside kristen welker. dylan dri dylan dreyer is here. >> did you observe some black friday shopping? >> no but i'm hoping do small business saturday. tens of millions getting ready to head home after thanksgiving. many of you waking up this morning. dylan standing by with a look. >> most of the country is actually looking okay. but we do have a cold front that's going to make its way to the northeast that will cause some minor troubles, but it's really the north west where we're going to see most of your problems today. especially late today and into sunday where we will see just heavy rain, gusty winds. we could see gusts up to 50 or 60 miles per hour. expect some airport delays,

especially in seattle and portland later today if you have afternoon or evening flights. as for the roads the mountain passes will be slow going. from seattle to portland it looks like mainly a rain event, but a lot of rain. on sunday still very rainy and windy. it looks very warm through the middle of the country with high temperatures running about 20 to 30 degrees above average. so if you're driving anywhere in this area, it's a windows down kind of drive. in the northeast we're we're looking at the possibility of lake effect snow that's going to kick in with strong northwest winds. could see gusts up to 30, 35 miles per hour. could see some minor delays, especially in new england, newark, laguardia, jfk. syracuse mainly because of the heavier snow bands. we're looking at maybe two to four inches, but still when it's kind of the first time of the year it makes it tricky on the

roads. >> absolutely. especially when it's a holiday weekend. thank you. >> thank you. >> whether traveling or not, a lot of people will be taking time to do some shopping. this is the start of the holiday shopping season with waking up early on black friday to take advantage of the in-store promotions that included deep discounts and free items. overall black friday went relatively smoothly. in alabama, though, false reports of gunshots sent shoppers scrambling and shut down the mall for a short period of time and a small glitch for macy's saying a credit card problem gave people a longer wait time. >> if early figures are any indication, this could be the biggest yet. on black friday alone, close to 115 million people were expected to head out and find those great deals in stores and online. an estimated $5 billion was spent in online shopping on friday alone. that's on top of the $2.87 billion spent online on

thanksgiving day. some retailers even saw brief outages online because of the sheer number of shoppers. retailers are hoping for a bigger boost over the next few days. more coming up in just a few moments. we want to turn to a horrific story overseas. at least 300 people w ater least 300 killed, more tha two dozen children. now there's an all-out man hunt to find them. bill neely is in cairo this morning. bill, good morning to you. what's the latest there? >> good morning, kristen. the death toll here in egypt is now 305. 27 of them children. truly horrific. not just the worst terror attack in egypt's modern history, but one of the worst ever in the middle east. it is a day of mourning and of military response with warplanes bombing what are described as terrorist targets.

gunfire at a mosque, a massacre without mercy. and mayhem after egypt's terror attack. even ambulances targeted outside. inside, more than 300 people dead. murdered as they prayed. nearly all were men, but there were dozens of children among the dead and injured. more than 100 wounded. hundreds more traumatized. this morning relatives took bodies away for burial. entire families were killed after militants singled out the mosque 200 miles from cairo. a suicide bomber detonating inside the mosque, then gunmen, perhaps dozens of them opening fire both inside and out on worshippers. even by the deadly standards of the middle east, this was a ruthless attack. >> militants have been

conducting attacks against egyptian security outposts, but an attack against a mosque really crosses a new threshold. >> the mosque is now in a virtual war zone which isis is trying to take over. two years ago isis brought down a russian bound plane using a bomb in a soda can killing 224. this year isis has attacked dozens of christians. attacked egypt security forces seemed unable to stop. president trump condemned the horrible and cowardly terrorist attack. egypt's president says it makes him more determined to confront terrorism. and he sent in his bombers. warplanes destroying vehicles said to have been used in the attack and bombing what the

military claim are terrorists in mountain hideouts. in egypt today deep shock at the massacre of so many civilians at worship inside a holy place by islamist gunmen. so a manhunt today and three days of mourning here, but a long-term problem for egypt's president sisi. prosecutes sisi. he stands for stability and security. there is neither here. kristen, craig. >> incredibly tragic. bill, thank you for that report. president trump speaking out about the terror attack in egypt. he's reaffirming his call for a ban and border wall. he also made headlines for claiming that "time magazine" might want him to be this year's person of the year. nbc white house correspondent kelly o'donnell is near the president's mar-a-lago estate in florida. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. of course, this is a holiday weekend for the president and his family. the white house has been specific to point out it is a working vacation. and president trump has been

mixing famous friends, serious foreign policy, and of course twitter. president trump, the multi-tasker. at least projecting that message from his mar-a-lago long weekend juggling urgent calls with leaders of turkey and egypt and claiming on twitter he would, quote, quickly hit the links with golf superstars tiger woods and dustin johnson. images popped on social media but the white house refused access to the press pool except for the motorcade ride. pushing his agenda, the president linked the deadly terror attack in egypt to reafirm his own hot button immigration policies. need the wall. need the ban he tweeted. the president also tried to ease u.s. tensions with turkey by telling its president in a friday phone call the u.s. would make adjustments to the military support meaning arms for kurds fighting isis in syria. a change desired by turkey. separately, turkey is mentioned

in the special counsel investigation. of former national security adviser michael flynn who did lobbying work for turkey and russia. a source familiar with the legal proceedings tells nbc news this week flynn a defense and that its regular practice of information sharing with the president's legal team. as first reported by "the new york times." but the strategy behind that shift is not publicly known. >> whether that means he's going to cooperate against other persons or just try to negotiate a better deal for himself remains to be seen. >> reporter: and as 2017 fades, president trump claimed that he rejected "time magazine's" person of the year honor claiming he took a pass when informed he would, quote, probably be chosen for a second

straight year. "time" responded tweeting the president is incorrect about how we choose person of the year. it does not comment until december 6th when with the issue will come out. this is an unusual thing for the president to try to stir up. i'm joking there. of course, he likes to create a media firestorm. why he picked "time magazine" is curious. yes, the president has been on the cover a number of times, but "the washington post" found when it visited a number of his golf clubs, 17 across the country, a handful had on its walls fake covers of "time magazine" featuring donald trump at the time when he was on "the apprentice." fake news, perhaps, a novelty item. the president may be trying to head off not being named person of the year, but he certainly stirred the pot with the magazine. president trump says he's taking a pass. >> kelly for us in west palm. thank you. now we want to take a look at some other stories making headlines this morning including

a new standoff with president trump that has washington wondering who's in charge of the consumer protection agency? the agent's director abruptly stepped down friday and named his deputy to take over, but the white house announced current budget director mick mulvaney would serve as the acting director. mulvaney once called a sad, sick joke. both sides say the law gives them the right to make the appointment. as of now no one is sure who is in charge come monday morning. first daughters are banding together in defense of malia obama when pictures of the freshman kissing a young man and blowing smoke rings. began spreading around the web. both ivanka trump and chelsea clinton took to twitter to speak out about the invasion of privacy. trump saying she should be off limits and clinton admonishing others to be better. jeff bezos who is already the world's richest person is

now worth more than $100 billion. he has black friday shoppers to thank for pushing him over that lofty height. bill gates is the only other person known to top $100 billion. he's apparently since fallen on hard times. he's down to $89 billion. >> tough times indeed. black friday was a big day for amazon. jeff bezos, and now small business owners are hoping it will be a hit for them. it's small business saturday. joleen kent is here. good morning to you. >> good morning, it's a big day. welcome to small business saturday. contrary to what the name says, it's a huge day for the u.s. economy. last year a record 112 million shoppers spent more than $15.4 billion at independent retailers and restaurants and they're not just on main street.

after the rush of black friday that started early and ended late, today small businesses are in the spotlight with deep discounts online and off. small businesses make up 99% of american companies employing 58 million people. >> one of the shopping trends is buying local handmade craftsman type products. you're not going to find that at the big box retailers. sierra brown started the diamond hanger out of the san diego warehouse two years ago. they sell vintage designer clothes all online with no brick and mortar shop. >> 50 years ago i would have definitely went straight for having a retail store on main street. it's a lot more cost efficient to have a warehouse and be able to operate from literally anywhere you live. >> she gets the word out about the diamond hanger on facebook and instagram. and then does the majority of business on ebay where customers can purchase one of a kind items with just a few clicks. ebay ceo says small businesses

must go digital to thrive in a competitive market of endless options. what is the value for the customer there? >> e-commerce has brought transparency. people get access and understand what's a great value. they may not have known in the era before the internet. they used to walk in a store and think they were getting a great deal. now they're one click away from checking whether they got a great deal. e-commerce has been a great leveller. >> ebay along with etsy, handmade and square providing the software and hardware to launch businesses like the diamond hanger. combining a vintage business model with an innovative strategy to make old feel new again. >> and incredible how much impact small businesses have on small business saturday. before we get to that, i want to ask you about black friday. because you have all these other big shopping days, because folks are going online, frankly. using their phones to do their

christmas and holiday shopping. is black friday still relevant? >> it's still relevant if you're looking for those big ticket items. as we saw yesterday, a lot of people lining up. those sales have now stretched over time into small business saturday, into cyber monday. they're trying to figure out how to handle businesses not knowing what to do as amazon and other online retailers pick up steam. >> i don't think folks realize 99% of the business is small business. they have an online presence. if you're shopping online, why will you shop for a small business online versus a major retailer. what are the pros and cons? >> if you're looking for some special or different, it's the time to go to a small business. to etsy or handmade by amazon. all these small businesses, they employ about 57 million americans.

really small businesses are the backbone of our economy here. so as you think about how you're making your purchases and you want to, you know, make it a little bit more of a variety, it's good to support both sides. chances are your local economy is supported entirely by small businesses. >> it's true. >> it's also such a great shopping experience. >> it's fun. >> jo, thanks so much. >> dylan dreyer standing by with the rest of the country's forecast. >> we're waiting for the cold front to move into the northeast. a couple of spotty rain showers towards buffalo. once the front moves in, temperatures drop and the northwest winds will drop over the lakes and create snow. especially as we go through sunday. i would say 1 to 2 inches, some areas more. temperatures will go from 60 down into the 40s but next week we warm right back up. we're off to another mild start yet again.

we're seeing clouds right now but can expect to see cloud increase through the afternoon. tri-valley, 55, the south bay at 53 and in san francisco, a very mild 57 degrees. the temperature trend does show those temperatures once again climbing into the mid 60s by mid-morning and then by about 11:00 a.m., we will start seeing some 70s, especially for inland areas. and that's your latest forecast. >> now to a story that's given us a lot of hope this holiday week about the kindness of strangers. h hundreds of people have donated to a homeless man who gave his last $20 to a woman stranded on the side of the road. on the page is still growing this morning. megan is here with our favorite story over the last few days. >> this has gone viral. talking about paying it forward, after seeing a woman in need, a

homeless gave the last dollar to his name to help her. that one act of kindness has paid dividends he couldn't have imagined imagined. in one day he went from zero to hero. he spent most days on the side of a philadelphia highway begging for spare change. until last month he saw a young woman, 27-year-old kate mcclure stranded after ran out of gas. >> this is not a safe area for anyone, not just a single female. she just seemed like he needed help. >> she toll the radio it was just the right thing to do. >> johnny came up and said get back in your car and lock the doors, i'll go and get you some gas. >> and that's exactly what he did. johnny used the only $20 he had to his name to purchase a can of gas and fill her tank while she waited. so touched by the act of kindness, mcclure and her boyfriend began to visit johnny every week. they found out he was a marine

core veteran from north carolina who friends say had fallen on hard times. they set up a go fund me page to help raise money for an apartment and soon the donations came pouring in. complete strangers sending in $10 and $20 amounts along with heart warming messages of support. it's how you end up that counts. hugs and love. i love that this has taken off and gone global. in just 14 days, his supporters have raised nearly $350,000. he says he feels like a newman with a fresh cut and a big take away. >> the situation i'm in people help me every day. so when i have an opportunity to help someone else, you know, it's the right thing to do. >> talk about a fresh start. that amount actually overwhelmed johnny to such a degree that at one point he even asked that the page be taken down because he didn't want to seem like he was taking advantage. instead of keeping all the money, he says he plans to donate the rest to a good cause.

microclimate forecast and vianey in warriors gold this morning. >> warriors gold and sunshine because today will be the last day we get to see sunshine early on and then tomorrow, bring on the clouds and the rain. but right now, if you're waking up, another mild start overall. san jose, look at that, 54 degrees, san francisco, 58, in oakland, 50 degrees, in santa cruz, 54, and we are tracking an active weather system that is going to make those clear skies in san francisco very cloudy. the temperature trend for tomorrow does show a little bit of some rain and also with the next couple of hours, expect to see the chance of some coastal dril drizzle, but that rain will really move in tonight. that east san jose temperature trend, if you look by about 10:00 a.m., cloud cover and the temperatures jump into the 70s. the north bay has already seen some light traces of some rain, but tomorrow is going to be the main event so of course i will break down all of the details coming up during the 7:00 a.m. hour. >> looking forward to it. vianey, thank you. well, black friday has come and gone, one of the most

anticipated shopping days for sure. people waited for hours at premium outlets in livermore, waiting for those stores to open. the longest lines were at high-end retailers like kate spade and berberry. some shoppers admit it was extreme but the sale was worth it. >> why the wait? >> because we're insane. the discounts are really great. can't beat them. >> our "today in the bay" team covers black friday every year. reporter bob says this year's black friday has been the busiest he's ever seen. full steam ahead on the christmas festivities. iconic sign in the bay area is the tree lighting in union square. beautiful. cheers from the crowd as the lights were switched on just before 7:00 last night. this is the 28th year of the macy's annual tree-lighting ceremony. in downtown san jose, christmas in the park kicked off. it's a holiday tradition dating back to 1890.

"time" tweeting back denying the president's claim. online hack. a warning for the people who use the website imgur as the company confirms hackers stole passwords and e-mail addresses in 2014. names, addresses and phone numbers were not compromised, however, because the site doesn't ask users for that information. and ready, the first of eight ven news for the 2020 olympic games in tokyo is now complete. sport plaza will host badminton and other sports giving us early olympic fever.

weather. it certainly doesn't feel like we're getting to the end of november. temperatures will be unseasonally warm by as much as 20 to 30 degrees. houston texas 80 degrees. charlotte, north carolina 65. but look at this area in here. this is where it's going to be nearly 30 degrees above average. denver, expect a high of 73 degrees today. st. louis, 61. dallas, 72. on monday we're looking for highs still in the 60s and 70s. even chicago about 54 degrees on monday which is 12 degrees above average. out west we just want to point out the high wind warnings that we're going to see with this next system making its way on shore. some of the mountain passes could seeing up to 100 mile per hour gusts. that could cause some power outages and also make things very dangerous for some of those high profile

a mild start. it's fairly clear right now. the temperatures remain in the 50s, 54 degrees for san jose, 58 for san francisco, but the radar is already showing plenty of activity just off to the north. we're seeing a couple of showers that have already kind of made their way through areas near santa rosa as well and we can expect to see the arrival of another system as we head into the overnight hours and that is expected to bring a good amount of some tropical moisture that will spread throughout the bay area. . now to an incredible story this thanksgiving week. for a man who was just released from prison after spending the last 38 years there for a crime he didn't commit. he was the longest serving pris prisoner in california history. steve patterson has more on his first days of freedom.

saturday, but -- >> it's going to change. but you will have the majority of the day to be outside, which is great. so go outside, go ahead and head out now because look at the doppler radar. you can see that storm system sitting off to the north but just behind that storm system, we've got a good amount of subtropical moisture, an atmospheric river, and that's going to kick in tonight, making its arrival to the north bay first and spread all day sunday but right now, temperatures remain fairly mild in san jose, in the 50s, upper 50s for san francisco and a quick check of today's highs. you will see we will stick for the most part into the upper 60s and 70s but we can expect to see an increase in that cloud cover. we're also tracking the arrival of not just rain but some pretty gusty winds and sierra snow that is anticipated in the forecast. you're going to want to tune in at 7:00. >> go back to your radar. in the meantime, black friday has come and gone. people waited for hours at the premium outlets in livermore, waiting for the stores to open

responding to the tragedy. the white house put out an official readout that reflects the more diplomatic tone of the president's call referring to shared interests and concern about terrorism. then you look at the president's twitter feed where his more brash take comes out where he talked about yes, condemning the attack, but also saying that this is an opportunity to sell his border wall, his travel ban initiative. u.s. domestic concerns that he was trying to promote. now, turning to the president's ability to whip up a feud with the media as you pointed out, kristin, he talked about "time magazine" claimed on twitter he'd been contacted about the person of the year. said they wanted a photo shoot and an interview and would, quote, probably give him that honor. he said taking a pass. however, "time magazine" came out and disputes that saying the president is wrong about their process and it will be secret their choice until december 6th. the irony of course is that some of his clubs he's had a phoney

cover of time on the wall kind of like a novelty item. not the real thing. >> kelly, thank you for that. let's take a look at some other headlines including a new standoff with president trump that has washington wondering who's in charge of the consumer protection agency. the agency's director stepped down friday and named his deputy to take over. but the white house announced current budget director mick mulvaney would be serving as the acting director. mulvaney once called that agency a sad sick joke. both sides say the law gives them the right to make the appointment. as of now, no one's sure who's in charge come monday morning. a huge upset in college football ended the university of miami's perfect season and quite possibly knocked them out of the playoffs. the surprising pitt panthers beat the hurricanes friday. surely the highlight of the losing season for miami it was their first loss since october of last year.
