heavy downpours, but you can see the rain in the brentwood area. no longer over the richmond area. it was passing through quite nicely. same for san jose. in the past hour, the showers moved through. it's cleared out. we are tracking the possibility of changing ahead. i want to check in with mike. there's a traffic alert in hayward. >> off the san mateo bridge, a slick roadway. eastbound from foster city is the problem. as we get to the maps, you can't access 880 from the san mateo bridge. there's a spill here. that has all lanes closed. get to surface streets, going north, take it to winton. it gets you on the nimitz. south on service streets toward industrial gets you on the nimitz as well. chp is working on this since 3:00. we don't have word when they

berkeley baseball player is the sole survivor of a car wreck involving a hit and run driver over the weekend on interstate 80 in san pablo. four people in that car were killed. "today in the bay's", pete suratos live in berkeley. there are a lot of unanswered questions. the crash seems horrible. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. they are still under investigation by chp. we can report this morning, according to chp, they are in custody for the suspected driver who calls this hit and run crash saturday night on i-80 in san pablo. the lone survivor, at least one of the cars involved in the car crash and the overturned car is saird horn. he plays baseball at uc berkeley, finishing his freshman season. started 15 games for the bears. with the star pitcher in napa prior to that.

he was the driver in that overturned car off san pablo exit off i-80. four people were killed as a result. sources tell nbc his family members. the names have yet to be released. when we get the information, we will bring it to you. the driver was driving with a suspended license, according to chp. five cars were involved in the crash. six more injured, including a child. we are going to continue to monitor the case. if we get updates, we'll bring them to you. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. the roads are wet out there throughout the bay area. this is video of westbound 580 where there are lots of spin outs and crashes reported throughout the day yesterday. unfortunately, some crashes were deadly. chp officers say they most likely hydroplaned because tires

were worn out. the crash ripped the roof off the van ejecting the driver. the van, sadly, ended up landing on that man. he did not survive. in berkeley, the driver of a green pickup truck spun out and eventually came to a stop. another car going too fast slammed into the pick up. a 10-year-old girl in the car was killed. three others in that car were injured. now, to the kate steinle murder case, jurors get back to deliberating after the holiday break. they went home wednesday without reaching a verdict. they have to decide where zarate intented to kill her or if it was an accident. stay with nbc bay area. we will read you the verdict and bring the breaking news as we get it. happening today, the man who escaped from a hawaiian psychiatric area hospital is due

in court. robert saito flew to san jose after a daring escape. he was arrested in stockton after a days long search. police described him as a violent psychopath. it took hospital personnel eight hours to notify police he was missing. in a follow up, an investigation continues into who sent a bomb to an alameda home. a package was delivered to a house friday afternoon. a woman living there opened it. it did explode. she was not hurt. several agencies are investigating. neighbors told us a police officer lives at that home. no word on a motive. 4:36 right now. today, oakland unified expected to cut $15 million from the budget. they will say schools will take a hit. teachers and parents are demanding cuts at the district level. enrollment has been declining, spending has been growing. former superintendent wilson is

was in the 70s last week. down to the 60s. yes, we had the rain yesterday. breezy to windy conditions, depending on where you were, it did get windy in spots. reports of lightning strikings in the area. i want to show you a look at the satellite radar, just to start off. this band of showers is what moved in overnight. that brought good downpours. now, it's pushed its way on through. we are seeing the last of the showers moving through concord. hayward got a good amount of rainfall. napa, a half inch. san jose, which typically the south bay is the last to see the majority of rain bands. that's what happened last night. we had moderate to heavy downpours. you can see the red and yellows. that's behind. please, be careful. as we begin to see this system move out and make its exit, we are going to see a bit of a cold air mass. that's going to drop the

temperatures by a bit. this morning, we are waking up overall cool. 51 degrees for the peninsula. 49 for the tri-valley. showers here and there. same for the south bay at 52 degrees. san francisco, 52 degrees right now. 48 for the north bay and 52 degrees for the east bay. now, i want to show you the 24-hour temperature change. as this cold air mass moves in and takes over, look at the temperature drop in san jose. 12 degrees cooler at this hour than yesterday. we have been waking up to upper 50s and 60s. we are ten degrees cooler at this hour than we were. napa, 12 degrees cooler. in livermore, eight degrees cooler. over all, the highs will remain in the 60s, lower 60s for the most part. san jose, 53 degrees. milpitas, 52. walnut creek, 61. antioch, 60 degrees. along the peninsula, you can expect to keep the breezy to

windy conditions for the mid afternoon to overnight hours. san francisco, we will keep a couple showers in the forecast by daybreak we clear out. looking ahead toward tuesday, it looks like we have another system that could bring the chance of possibly light rain to the far north bay. then, as we kind of fast forward, it's only monday, but looking ahead, that's when the next chance of rain moves in. we can expect to keep the chance of rain through that sunday. so, we definitely have a couple changes on the way. most noticeably, it is the drop in temperatures. still very wet out there, mike. how is it looking? >> great. we can look toward the weekend, never too early. we are looking at wet roads. that's what the green indicates, the highlighting. the green sensors mean you are at speed. we are tracking this for hayward. this has been going on sinls 3:00. a semitruck hit the center

divide. it caused a crash and oil leak. eastbound 92 is closed. you can get off at industrial. take industrial north or south toward industrial parkway and get on to 880, depending on which direction you intend to take. the maze, i hope it will clear by 5:30. chp, the big issue is not the oil spill, but moving the rig. they have to get the right size tow truck. a crash and spin out here. they just closed the lane. i see slowing here. the dublin interchange in the middle of the green highlighting, we take a live look and show you the conditions are soupy. that's why folks traveling westbound are moving well. a little bit of flooding in a lane here on the right side, geting over toward the dublin interchange. we urge folks to slow it down. the off ramp or curve or incline could cause loss of traction. back to you.

>> thank you. new this morning, the victim of a shark attack should make a full recovery. it would happen friday afternoon near pebble beach. a great white shark bit it before it managed to break free. new reaction from the father this morning. >> that moment, just a shock for me. horrifying standing there. because the damage, the scale of the damage you see that. a lot of people would faint. >> he says the shark barely missed a major artery in his son's leg. >> looking more and more dangerous, the volcano in bali dangerously close to erupting. it has been sending ash thousands of feet into the air since saturday. authorities are telling people to leave. that includes all tourists. many couldn't get out yesterday because bali's international

airport was closed, due to all the ash. the last time it erupted was 1963, killing more than 1,000 people. a legal showdown over who will head the consumer protection bureau, the agency that investigated and forced wells fargo to pay fines. the temporary director filed a lawsuit to stop president trump from appointing this man, current budget director, nick mulvaney. he made no secret he is not a fan of the agency. he voted to end that bureau, while in congress. republicans believe the bureau is a burden to banks and wall street. the bureau forced them to hand back $12 billion to consumers. meanwhile, history made in minnesota last night. the first woman with down syndrome competed in the miss minnesota pageant. >> she is believed to be the only down syndrome woman to have competed at the state or

nbc bay area responds to a dublin woman couldn't get insurance company to pay up. >> she turned to our responds team. here is chris chmura with the story. >> her car was rear ended. she needed a rental car while hers was in for repair. she called the other drivers insurance company, alliance united. they told her, go ahead and pay for the rental yourself and we'll reimburse you later on.

her car was in the shop for 23 days. the rental cost $690. when she submitted her receipt to alliance united, it wouldn't pay up. she says it company gave different explanations, including one that the repairs shouldn't have taken 23 days. she reached out to us for help. we contacted alliance united and it reimbursed her the full $690. in an e-mail, they said they couldn't share details of the case because of a privacy policy. this is a reminder to get offers like that in writing with as many details as possible, like the daily rate and how long you can keep the rental. if you have a consumer complaint, 888-996-tips or www.nbcbayarea.com/responds. >> thank you, chris. 4:56. a leg injury benched 49ers
