i had somebody message me. here we go. by 7:00 a.m., in the 40s. keep in mind, napa, san francisco, all those areas are some spots in the 30s. a chilly start. it will be cloudy by the brunch/lunch hour or they call it recess time. i don't have kids. recess time, right laura. >> brunch. >> by the time they get out of school, the temperatures will be in the 60s. then it will be sunny and parents with enjoy a nice afternoon at the park. right? >> if you go to a fancy school, brunch and tea later on. we haven't hit the peak of the commute by any means. we are just getting started. this crash nbds highway 101 did cause slowing. it was blocking the fast lane. i just saw the speeds recover a bit. that should mean they are off to the shoulder. i'll double check with chp and let you know if there are

problems there. a crash south 880 around first. that will be an issue with a distraction. a fire on the side of the road with a structure. we are not sure what is doing that. university has slowing in that area. that will be an issue. the travel times are okay. you are now just over that half hour mark from highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:02. the breaking news out of the south bay. we just received this information a few moments ago. a gunshot fired inside an elementary school in san jose. >> it happened at booksin elementary. bob redell has been on this since we went on the air at 4:30. we understand you saw what was shot out at at the building? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. we were just on the campus at booksin elementary. outside the library, there's a security camera. somebody took a shotgun, shot

out the security camera and shot pellets into the library itself. we spoke to a witness who called 911 earlier this morning. about 4:00, she heard the gunshots. her and her husband tried to try ang late the man, trying to chase after him to apprehend him. she says this is a problem that happened a cup weeks ago. that's why they were chasing this man. they never found him. the only description is he's 5' 10"-5' 11." this is outside booksin elementary, not far from presentation high. for at least an hour, they had this area surrounded, lights shown on different places in the neighborhood. we had officers in tactical helmets with assault rifles glowing throughout the neighborhood trying to look for this man with a gun. unfortunately, they did not find

him. they have since left the scene. again, you have this security camera that was shot out at booksin elementary, happening overnight well before school started or children with your on campus. live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, we'll continue to check back with you. at 6:04, also developing in the willow glen area, south bay community is on edge over cat attack concerns. the animal you see here is recovering from a bow and arrow shot. the animal is one of two attacked in willow glen near alma loop and minnesota avenue. the owner putting up warning signs warning others to protect their pets. we talked to people who live in the area. >> i don't know if it's cats or disregard for living creatures. i'm not sure. somebody -- >> i honestly hope they find who

did this. because this is cruel. there is no purpose. it's completely senseless. >> they call the case extremely alarming. they say they do not have any suspects. new details as investigators try to determine if recent explosions involving packages left outside two homes are connected. the first package exploded in east palo alto. the second package exploded last week in alameda. they were left on doorsteps. homeowners tried to open those boxes, they exploded. each victim suffered minor injuries. >> evidence being reviewed and leads are being followed. >> looking at the possibility that they could be connected. >> we are not ruling anything out. >> investigators are warning everyone to be mindful of suspicious packages. this includes those that are missp missp misspeled or show signs of --

call 911 if something is wrong. a political activist group is the victim of a holiday vandal. the group is the satanic chapel. this is video shot overnight. this year, the group is displaying a tree at san jose's christmas in the park. that is where the vandal took the goat head from the top of the tree, which you can see in images posed online. the goat head is expected to be replaced now in the next few days. happening today, pushing to extend the 2:00 a.m. last call. a former san francisco city leader who is now a state lawmaker is leading those efforts once again. pete suratos is live in the city this morning. pete, how could this impact anyone going out for a drink this afternoon? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. it could impact you if you are looking to have a drink past that 2:00 a.m. time or working in the night life industry.

the state lawmaker is scott wiener, pushing for the extension of the 2:00 a.m. time to 4:00 a.m. he pushed for this bill not too long ago. the senate passed a measure for this back in may, the local act, which stands for let our communities adjust to late night. now, it stalled in the state senate, turning into a steady bill that stripped it of provisions to study the implications of allowing bars to stay open later. as far as the impact of night life in san francisco, i looked up a report by the controller. night life contributes 80 billion to the general fund. we will talk about the bill later this morning. he will do so in front of the sf eagle.

live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> we will be following that with you. pg&e is talking about the loss the facility may face as fall out from the wildfires. it comes from a regulatory filing with the securities and exchange commission. mesh mercury news looked through it. the company acknowledges it may face financial difficulties depending on the extent of their responsibility for the fires. pg&e may have to pay damages. the merc reports they may have $800 million in liability insurance. some blame pg&e equipment and vegetation as factors in the disaster. nbc bay area's investigator unit revealed both problems and at least one complaint. it is 6:08 right now.

we have all this traffic. this is the nimitz freeway near the coliseum. a smooth drive in both directions. i'm watching 880 in san jose. we have that crash. i'll let you know if the off ramp stays open. >> thanks, mike. 6:14. all new this morning, a big shot in the arm to improve traffic through one of the busiest areas in the bay area corridor. alameda county transportation leaders approved a $107 million deal to add an express car pool lane through sunol on northbound 680. it will run from automall parkway to highway 84. it's an area that routinely backs up. it should be up and running by 2020. a controversial immigration raid in august will be the focus of a hearing tonight in oakland. it happened on august 16th in west oakland. oakland police assisted in the raid by directing traffic, but

critics say that goes against the sanctuary city policy cooperating with i.c.e. they will report to city council tonight at 5:00. buzz feed initially reported the google site search algorithm was displaying inappropriate phrases. they said, in part, we worked to quickly remove it as soon as we were made aware. we are investigating this matter to see what was behind the autocompletion. google says they have removed 270 accounts that made predatory accounts on videos featuring minors. the site removed ads from 2 million videos and more than 500,000 channels that posed as family friendly. >> google and youtube, as well as facebook making changes for

the better, lately. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. it was the press that pushed them to do it. >> it's been news reporter that found the content and called and asked the companies about it, then the companies made the change. not before. let's talk about uber. today is a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad day for uber. there's a long list. are you ready? number one, the city of chicago is suing uber for data breach. you may remember uber knew for months it had been hacked but didn't tell us. washington is interested, too. members of congress sent uber a letter demanding information about the hack. we call this uber problem number two today. problem three. waymo, the automated car company started at google is asking for a delay in a trial due to start this week after it was discovered uber may have hidden a document from the court. there's a civil suit and criminal investigation.

that's because we can't expect to see areas of patchy fog in the next couple hours. if you encounter it, play it safe. your microclimate highs, similar to what we saw yesterday. we have been on this cap of 60s starting from sunday when the initial system moved in. live mor, a high of 60 degrees. san jose, 63. san francisco, 62. oakland 62, napa, 61. we have a couple changes on the way. the systems are conflicting in terms of the avooirrival of the storm, how much rain and who is going to get it. i want to look ahead. we have this system sitting far off to the north. however, into the overnight hours, there may be a chance of seeing light showers in the north bay. very light overnight. saturday and sunday, you can see this model here is not showing too much rain. it's showing that system to the north. however, other models are showing the possibility of seeing showers saturday.

we are going to keep that in the forecast for now. we stay dry, wednesday, thursday and friday. saturday and sunday, i want you to notice the start of the drop in the temperatures, not just for san francisco, but also inland areas. we start welcoming highs only in the 50s. we are talking 50 degrees by saturday. 59 by sunday. if you notice, we have a lot of sunshine ahead of us. mike, there's two crashes now. >> that's right. on the nimitz, 880 itself. overall, it is looking like a good drive as far as the speed sensors go. tri-valley and hayward showing the typical pattern. that is light for a tuesday. we'll watch it as it builds. the south bay, we are tracking the build. northbound 101 and 85 showing the most changes. the off ramp there, still open. the crash still on the shoulder. the crash over 101 not presenting problems past highway 85 through mountainview. we are looking at 880

evacuated. medical centers across the nation face a shortage due to hurricanes. puerto rico is the leading saline provider. they buy $40,000 worth of saline. they stopped production. the ripple effect is being felt already. >> it's continuously needed throughout the u.s. every hospital needs it. once one is effected, the others get backlogged. >> that shortage is expected to run through at least next march. new this morning, it turns out americans bought homes last month at the fastest pace in a decade. the commerce department says single family homes in october increased 6.2%. that is the highest level since october 2007. new home sales increased for three months straight. a big honor for warriors

it looks like it may stay high up top. that is great for the commuters this morning. it makes it so much easier now that the roads are dry following that rain on the weekend. what do people have to look forward to out there? >> that beautiful sunrise is distracting. looking over here, focus on the roadways. it's beautiful as far as the speed sensors on the peninsula there. the south bay building from 101 and 85. the biggest issue here for highway 4 is san marco boulevard. a crash at the point where the off ramp splits with the roadway. three vehicles in the triangular area. it's a big distraction. that's the jam out of antioch. by the time you get to concord, you are fine. getting out of vallejo, this is a problem. this is why the drive time cranked up. the crash and the bridge on the shoulder is a distraction for more slowing as folks get through the area. slow down. i heard from chp, the folks

the building. we spoke with a woman who lives across the street who had 911 on the phone while he was firing a gun. this was around 3:50 this morning. she and her husband tried to chase the man, even though neither were armed themselves. the gunman, at one point turned the gun in her direction forcing her to hit the deck. why did you chase after this guy? >> um, just wanted to give a description. i just want it to stop. i'm tired of this. these are -- my daughter goes here. this is just not fair. for the kids. it's not fair. two weeks ago, yes. >> reporter: san jose police confirm they received a report of shots fired a couple weeks ago at booksin elementary and might have involved another security camera. police set up a perimeter around this neighborhood this morning.

it was set up for a good hour and a half. they had officers on assault rifles searching for the man. they had cars with lights shined where they were trying to find him. they did not find him. the destenoscription the woman gave us, the mother, said this man was 5' 10," stocky, wearing black. that's the best description. we have calls out to the schools. parents calling in to see what kind of impact, if any, it will have on school. we are trying to get the answers for you. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people alarmed. thank you, bob. 6:34 now. more than two years after her tragic murder, today the teenager accused of killing 8-year-old maddy middleton will be arraigned in santa cruz. he will be charged as an adult. >> kris sanchez is live with what to expect. this has been an emotional and long journey for the victim's

family. >> reporter: yeah. already, over the last couple weeks, they heard a lot of information during that two week hearing, which the judge was trying to figure out whether this young man should be tried as a juvenile or as an adult. in the end, the judge decided adrian gonzalez said he lured 8-year-old maddy into the apartment with ice cream before choking her, raping and killing her. after that he should be facing charges as an adult. the little girl's body was found in a dumpster where they live. it took two weeks to present cases to the judge. the judge has to decide the results. he should be tried for murder and rape as an adult, which could mean life in prison, if convicted. scheduled to be arraigned this morning at 8:15, meaning he will have a chance to say whether he is guilty or not guilty of the

very serious crimes against him. that is going to happen at 8:15. as i mentioned, that is after this newscast is over. we are going to be inside at that time. as soon as we find out, we are going to push it out to www.nbcbayarea.com and facebook and twitter. we know this struck a chord with a lot of parents, not just in santa cruz, but throughout the bay area. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. continuing coverage now. more than 100 people in san francisco are still without natural gas this morning. you are looking live at an apartment building on mission street near courtland avenue. pg&e told us overnight that investigators will be back out there early this morning. investigators say that natural gas leak from outside the building accumulated in the garage and came into contact with a pilot light. moments before that blast, a deaf man says he felt his place vibrating, so he fled.

we spoke with his sister who calls the escape a miracle. >> read the bible every night. he believes in god. he just had the picture. i don't know. >> pg&e says crews will spend the morning relighting pilot lights for nearly 500 other customers in that area whose service was interrupted by the explosion. >> the search is on for a missing inmate. tattoos make him easy to spot. corey hughes disappeared yesterday afternoon while he was working with his prison work crew. he was serving time on a weapons charge. hughes was set to be released in three months. 6:37. this is the fourth day jurors will deliberate in the kate steinle murder case. they had questions for the judge about the defendant. the questions were not open to the media or the public.

we will continue to monitor the deliberations all day today. stay with us. if we reach a verdict or a verdict is reached, nbc bay area will bring you that live. happening today, the oakland city council will hold a moment of silence for the ghost ship warehouse fire victims. it's days ahead of the tragic anniversary. saturday marks one year since 36 lives were taken when a fire broke out during a party at that warehouse. it is the deadliest fire in oakland's history. recreational marijuana is back on the agenda. the board of supervisors is running out of time to get the rules on the books before it becomes legal. they have been criticized for the delays. a group of older residents are demanding a ban on pot shops. there are proposals to keep them 1,000 feet from schools. good morning. we are looking at the big bay.

we have a pleasant drive. this tuesday, things didn't kick in until a few minutes ago. south bay show 101 and 85 continuing to build. 87 over here shows a little slowing. over here on the satellite picture. the crash north of there may cause more traffic to jam up on the approach for 101 and 87 as they come into the area. the center divide is visible for traffic. the rest of the silicon valley seeing that build out of san jose. as you go to the tri-valley, that one triangle at the interchange, there's a crash on the shoulder. not really affecting traffic. we are monitoring that and the build to the san mateo bridge. the bay bridge, the top number, over 40 minutes now. highway 4 to the berkeley curve. that's not bad. it's tuesday. >> right. >> traffic is great.

>> all right. vianey arana is filling in for kari hall. we are looking forward to the weekend. >> that's when you won't be at work. when you can look forward to a nice weekend and possibly some rain. as the models are conflicting right now. when i put up the forecast and mention rain, right now, it's looking like it may or may not be widespread on and off again as we get closer to the short range model, a look at what we can expect. for now, the temperatures will remain in the 60s. we are anticipating a drop in those highs, which mean the highs only climb into the 50s. the sunday forecast looks like it is going to clear out nicely. we are anticipating the rain to carry over into saturday and sunday's forecast. santa cruz might get a chance of seeing showers. looks like the temperatures, overall, will be very comfortable and more seasonable for this time of year, thanks to that chilly start and the cold front that moved.

in california will go on to college and earn a bachelor's degree. that's according to new research from the public policy institute of california. the students are not taking the right college prep courses. some california high schools do not offer all the courses required for admission to the state's public university. happening today is world aids day. several events are taking place across the bay area. san jose city will be lit in red starting at 1:30 this afternoon. there will be a red ribbon event all week to promote aids awareness. in san francisco, they will talk about finding a cure and the latest research. that goes from 1:00 to 4:00 at ucsf. a hearing on sexual harassment and abuse. the assembly will hold the hearing. in october 140 women signed an open letter describing a culture of sexual harassment.

tony mendoza, a democrat from southern california was stripped of his leadership role over sexual harassment allegations. another democrat from southern california, raul bocanegra resigned. six women accused him of sexual harassment or assault. the white house is defending words in front of a group of heroes. >> attacking a senator and assaulting the navajo talks. >> marcus and laura, the president was supposed to be honoring those men who helped america win the second world war. it happened at the white house and the president went off script. >> you were here long before any of us were here. we have a representative in congress who they say was here a long time ago. they call her pocahontas. you know what? i like you because you are

they didn't find him. police tell bob redell that the school is considered safe for class today. we have calls into area schools as well to see if they are taking extra precaution. police are looking for a person or people behind cat attacks in the south bay. this is actually one of the two cats recovering after being shot and hit with a bow and arrow. the incident happened in recent months in san jose's willow glen neighborhood. this is alma loop and minnesota avenue. people who live in the area say it's concerning. >> i don't know if it's hatred of cats or disregard for living creatures. i'm not sure. >> i hope they find who did this, arrest that person because it's cruel. there's no purpose. it's completely senseless. >> the owner of one of the injured cats put up signs warning people.

police call the case extremely alarming. investigators are trying to figure out about two package explosions. the first in east palo alto. the second last week in alameda. the packages were left on doorsteps. when the owners tried to open the boxes, they exploded. investigators warned people to look out for suspicious packages including those with misspellings or wiring. vandalism case, the san jose chapter of satanic chapel has a display. someone took the goat head at the top of the tree. it is an organization founded five years ago. it is expected to be replaced over the next few days. a live look at the courthouse where later today, the teenager accused of killing maddy middleton two years ago is

expected to be arraigned. adrian gonzalez was 15 years old when he raped and killed her. authorities say gonzalez admitted to killing her. because he is charged as an adult, he may face life in prison if he is charged and convicted. more than 100 people are without natural gas after an explosion rocked an apartment building. it happened on mission street near portland avenue. they say natural gas leaked from outside the building, collected in the garage and came into contact with a pilot light. no one was injured. pg&e crews will be on the scene relighting pilot lights for people in that area. coming up next on the "today" show, continuing coverage of president trump's high stakes meeting this morning as he is expected to head to the hills to gain republican support for the tax reform plan.
