reform. traveling to capitol hill to personally make his case. we're going to begin our coverage this morning with nbc white house correspondent kristen welker. good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning to you. president trump does have a full day of high stakes meetings on both sides of pennsylvania avenue today. first up capitol hill where he'll push senate republicans to get behind the tax reform plan with more than a dozen senators expressing doubts right now. and then later this afternoon the president is back at the white house where he'll meet with the leaders of both parties to discuss the rest of his agenda. the president adding urgency to all of it in a tweet overnight. dem kragts want big tax increases. >> reporter: president trump heads to the hill.

to know that story as well. >> reporter: all of it comes as the washington post posted this interview on monday with one of their reporters and the woman they say tried to dupe them into reporting that she had conceived a child with roy moore when she was 15. >> i would not want to go through with it at this point. >> reporter: the post never reported her story based on what they called an unsubstantiated account and say she appears to have ties to a right wing group. she entered the office of project veritas. the post confronted james o'keefe, the leader. >> do you work for project veritas. >> no. >> reporter: roy moore's opponent, doug jones, is leading by less than a percentage point. president trump all but endorsed moore last week but now the white house says the president won't actually campaign for moore here in alabama.

about this morning including that close call for passengers and crew members aboard two large planes at jfk airport right here in new york. the jets clipped wings on the taxi way. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. tom, what happened here? >> reporter: good morning. this all started when a virgin atlantic pilot requested permission to pull off to the side of a taxi way to deal with an issue in the cockpit. that's when a passing egypt air 777 got too close shredding the tip of the virgin's plane wing grounding both planes and now the faa is investigating. tense moments for passengers and crew aboard two planes both headed overseas from new york's jfk airport monday night. after the wings of the wide body jet liners got too close on a taxi way briefly clipping each other. the faa says egypt air flight 986 headed to cairo hit the left

wing of a virgin atlantic 4 heading to london sheering off the tip of the wings. the audio recording revealed how it happened. the virgin atlantic pilot told the tower he had a problem and needed to solve that before he could take off. he pulled the massive boeing 777 to the side but apparently not far enough. >> we've got a technical issue at the moment. we're going to have to do something. >> disregard all of that. pull off to the right all the way to the right as far as you can. >> virgin 4 charlie. i think we just clipped our wing. >> you can confirm he has the left hand wing. >> fortunately no one was injured, but both planes sustained significant damage to each one of their wing tips. thankfully the planes were not moving at full speed when this happened. the faa said there was no fuel leakage reported. egypt air went back to the terminal on its own power. the virgin atlantic plane had to

iran. >> reporter: she says her husband is a legitimate academic scholar pursuing his doctorate. his research had been approved by government officials there. >> he didn't do anything secretly and none of the documents are confidential information. >> reporter: the new iranian tv report comes on the heels of president trump's announcement last month that he would not certify the obama era nuclear arms deal with iran and might pull out of it altogether unless congress imposes additional sanctions against the country. a state department official called for wong's release saying we strongly condemn iran's subjecting mr. wang and other prisoners to these forced video appearances. in july the white house issued a statement calling on iran to release all-americans being detained there saying, quote, for nearly 40 years iran has used detentions and hostage taking as a tool of state policy. she says her husband is a victim of the political tension between the u.s. and iran but is holding out hope that her family will soon be together again.

a little later today .. the teenager accused of killing 8-year-old maddy good morning. it's 8:26. the toon aejer accused of killing 8-year-old maddy milton is scheduled to be arraigned. it played out more than two years. adrian gonzalez was sa when authorities say he raped and killed maddy after alluring her into his apartment. her body was found at the dumpster at the complex where they both lived. authorities say gonzalez admitted to killing her. gonzalez is being charged as an adult. he may face life in prison if he is tried and convicted. right now, mike is tracking a traffic situation in the north bay. >> we have this crash we told you about, southbound 101. it looks like speeds may start to be recovering. it's still reported, south 101, right at the robin williams tunnel, formerly waldo tunnel

seat. he can have my seat. i'll go. >> i felt at home there. and it just made me really want to come back again tomorrow. >> reporter: jonathan has become more than just the director of the dallas street choir, he's family. and for many, the one constant in their lives. a lot of choir directors deal with certain things. you have a whole different set of issues that you need to deal with. >> sure. whether you have mental illness or not, you are welcome in this choir. we have folks with addiction. and if you're under the influence, you're asked to leave and say, you know, this isn't your week. come back next week. >> reporter: everyone gets a second chance? >> and a third and a fourth. ♪ >> reporter: after 2 1/2 years of conducting the choir, jonathan thought these men and women deserved an even bigger stage. ♪
