you. a live look outside at san francisco. beautiful. >> u. two, that's gorgeous. >> looks like a picture. picture perfect it is. >> it is. >> it is this morning. 5:00 is the time. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's check in with vianey. you said it's gorgeous, the lights reflecting on the water but it's a cold start. >> especially because there are no clouds, so that makes for postcard picture perfect. we are expecting to at least keep turning on the heaters. i did for the first time this week, i'm hoping not to use it as often but judging by the temperatures right now in santa rosa the north bay is definitely in for a much colder morning, the rest of the a bay area we are in the 40s, san francisco at 48 degrees. if you notice the 24-hour temperature change, no major changes now along the water, it is a little bit warmer in half-moon bay. oakland 5 degrees warmer. by the afternoon the temperatures even out across the

board but we do have some changes, we have high pressure that is expected to break apart eventually and that may affect our overtime daytime highs as well. i will break that down for you iníñ bit but first i know mike is still tracking a crash in the north bay. >> most of the bay look at these speed sensors around, most of the bay very easy right now, it's only 5:01. the commute doesn't kick in until much later this time of year but we are looking at a smooth flow. in the north bay this is the one exception because we are following this deadly crash. westbound highway 116 the ativan necessary road, between van ness and east van ness there's a deadly crash, a car ejected its driver after impact so that person, i believe that's the person who died as a result of that crash and the coroner is heading out there. until that scene has been cleared we cannot reopen that portion of the freeway, so van ness to east van ness or vice versa is your way around it. that's in sonoma just off highway 12 and 116 but the rest of the north bay does move smoothly. there is a little fog registering but not a problem as

far as visibility so far as you head down through novato. breaking news, former "today" show anchor matt lauer just issued a response after he was fired wednesday over allegations of inappropriate sexual misconduct. those claims made by an nbc employees. >> bob redell joins us from our newsroom, he has been monitoring the "today" show which is now airing on the east coast. bob? good morning. early this morning matt lauer sent a statement to his colleagues which was read by his former co-host, savannah guthrie. this was at the beginning of this morning's edition of the "today" show. >> our top story is once again about our former colleague, matt lauer. >> and, in fact, we just moments ago received a statement from matt and let me read it to you. there are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain i have caused others by words and actions. to the people i have hurt, i am truly sorry. as i am writing this, i realize the depth of the damage and disappointment i have left behind at home and at nbc. some of what is being said about

me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. i regret that my shame is now shared by the people i cherish dearly. repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and i'm committed to beginning that effort. it is now my full-time job. the last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. it's been humbling. i am blessed to be surrounded by people i love. i thank them for their patience and grace. >> that's a statement from matt that just came in within the last minute or two. >> in another development nbc news is reporting that two more accusers have come forward since news broke of lauer's termination. the misconduct alleged in the original complaint began at the 2014 olympic games in sochi, russia, and continued after. the lawyer for the accuser had this to say in part, i am awed by the courage my client showed to be the first to raise a complaint and to do so without making any demands other than

asking the company to do the right thing. last night variety magazine published a report laying out a pattern of alleged sexual misconduct by lauer, including exposing himself to an employee in his office and inviting women employed by nbc late at night to his hotel room while covering the olympics. three unnamed women tell variety they were sexually harassed, their account, variety says, corroborated by friends or colleagues. the magazine also reports that several women said they made complaints to executives at nbc which were ignored. variety magazine based its reporting on a two-month investigation with dozens of interviews with current and former staff. nbc news issued a response saying, we can say unequivocally that prior to monday night current nbc news management was never made aware of any complaints about matt lauer's conduct. laura, marcus? >> thank you, very much. our coverage continues online as well, you can read nbc's full statement on our

website along with a statement from the lawyer of the woman who came forward. 5:04. new this morning, bart police telling nbc bay area that they have not confirmed reports elsewhere about a stabbing outside the san bruno bart station last night. according to initial reports a man was bleeding from his hand and the station was closed for cleaning. we just got off the phone with bart police and they told us that that man did have some kind of puncture wound, but that the man would not indicate how it happened. the station has been opened. and happening today, an accused serial killer is due in the florida courtroom today, howell donaldson allegedly killed four people randomly within a seven block radius. they arrested him on tuesday after a tip from a mcdonald's coworker. he will be charged with four counts of first degree murder. live to capitol hill where the senate may vote on a tax reform bill possibly today.

president trump promoted the bill at a rally in missouri on wednesday. nbc bay area's edward lawrence has the latest from washington. >> reporter: president donald trump returned to the white house after taking his message of tax cuts straight to the american people. he held a rally in missouri. >> in order to achieve this bright and glowing future, the senate must pass those tax cuts. bring main street roaring back and that's what's going to happen. >> reporter: the senate voted wednesday to start debate on the gop tax bill. there is no guarantee of success and no democratic support. >> this process has been, in fact, a mockery of democracy. it is a classic bait and switch. >> reporter: the leadership needs every republican senator and some are wavering. they're facing reality that, look, this is a tough time. we will have to come up with a tax bill that works. >> some republicans are concerned that the bill could add to the deficit, others worry

crossings. the four crossings run through tracks with no underpass or overpass. city councillors considered two new studies on diverting cars, bikes and pedestrians. the major sticking point is coming up with the funding to cover construction costs. a follow-up, leaders in two peninsula cities are reportedly asks santa clara county for more time. this is to examine the planned expansion for stanford university. stanford wants to add thousands of new housing units and three million square feet of academic space. this is by 2035. according to the palo alto weekly leaders want an additional 60 days to review a recent environmental impact report. stanford calls the request unwarranted. a live look at the oakland coliseum. happening later the coliseum authority will look at the future there with and without the raiders. raiders are still on schedule to move to las vegas in 2020. commishers today will discuss updated timelines on the team's departure. but that's not all, the commission will also have to discuss the warriors move from

oracle arena to san francisco and the a's possible move to a new stadium near laney college. good morning, it is 5:08. as you get up this morning and you're wondering how your morning commute will be, as you know, we are not tracking any rain so expect dry conditions across the board, but temperatures that will be chilly to cold in some spots, especially for the north bay. north bay in the 30s and 40s, but if i take you through that timeline in the south bay if you notice we go from who is and the 40s stim around until 8:00 a.m. so depending on what time you leave for work this morning it will still be on the colding side. as we head out towards the 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 hour as you're getting ready to grab a bite to seat the temperatures will climb to the 60s. today's highs will shape out quite nicely, san francisco also expecting similar conditions. now, san francisco may see a couple of high clouds here and there through the afternoon and as you head out for lunch in san francisco temperatures are only

expected to climb into the upper 50s and 60s so all in all your weather is great for your morning commute but the question is how are the roads and the traffic. so let's check in with mike. >> they are green. all that suspense, i had to build up something. we had some slowing right here in the tri-valley, highway 84, we talked about, likely some crews moving around and it should clear and it is clearing up, just mild slowing on this -- well, it's a major surface street but state route 84, highway 84 coming down from 580 over towards 680. that is moving very well. light traffic for the tri-valley and east bay. the approach to the bay bridge no delays, just 15 minutes so that's more than the 13 we saw a bit before. a few more cars so basically you are at the limit from highway 4 to the berkeley curve. we will show you the san mateo bridge, getting across the bay, i showed you the approach coming out of the east bay, a smooth drive to the peninsula side, eastbound -- you look at the beautiful clear view and that bay bridge also the backup we saw for the cash lanes looks

"today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in san francisco where the countdown is going on with this decision. pete, you have been out there. can you feel if the jury is getting any closer to a deliberation? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. well, no, there is not much of an indication whether they're getting closer or further from this verdict but we do know if they don't reach that rear difficult today they will continue deliberations next week since the court is closed tomorrow. today marks the fourth full day of deliberations, they had two half days before the holiday weekend and there wasn't much activity in the courthouse yesterday, i believe we have some video showing what was taking place, you had prosecution walking around momentarily but that was pretty much it. but we do have the prosecutors that have made the argument that josé ines garcia zarate intended to kill kate steinle or someone walking on pier 14 in july of 2015, but the defense team claims the shooting was accidental and that the bullet which killed steinle ricocheted

>> awesome. >> today a good day. >> yeah, another great day, have you all been enjoying this week for the weather? >> i have. >> cooler temperatures, you will get another chance to keep on enjoying them for a while it seems like. the current temperatures still fairly cold in the 30s and 40s so i think a nice hot or maybe warm cup of coffee may be in place, also some tea. the peninsula right now at 43 degrees, tri-valley finally jumped out of the 30s, check that out, now it's in the 40s. one thing is in common across the bay area and that is those clear skies. if you notice no clouds in sight. 39 degrees for the north bay right now, san francisco a milder 50, it's not as cold along san francisco, but your mike climate highs for today once those temperatures start to warm up thanks to the sunshine and clear skies we warm up by a bit and then the conditions will be similar to yesterday, san jose 66 degrees, milpitas 63, morgan hill 66, out near the east bay we are also talking about similar conditions, upper

60s in pleasanton, antioch 64, concord 65, and for the peninsula upper 50s and 60s yet again. we might get high clouds into the early afternoon that should clear out by the evening, 60 degrees for half-moon bay, in san francisco we will top out into the lower 60s by the afternoon, outer sunset a high of 60 degrees and the north bay will top out in the 60s as well. we do have a couple changes on the way. i've been mentioning this system we were monitoring that was going to bring the chance of some rain. judging by the system it looks like we have a pretty decent snow forecast. if you look by about 6:00 on saturday we will start seeing the arrival of that snowfall and then on sunday that's when we are expecting to get a couple inches of snow, anywhere between 6 to 9 inches for the higher elevation areas. that might be something to keep in mind if you have plans to head up to lake tahoe, that could bring the chance of breezy to windy conditions. the storm system looks like it

will stay north mainly in seattle and portland, however, there is a chance of possibly seeing some rain but mainly for the north bay and then if you notice by sunday it clears out quite beautifully leaving behind just some cooler temperatures that will top out in the 50s for san francisco expect a high of 58 on saturday and sunday, we will stick to the 50s before we start seeing a warm up again by next week but for now it looks like that high pressure is really dominating. it looks like mike is tracking something in san jose right now. >> yes, but on the maps the green is dominating and that's good news as far as those speed sensors go, the green sensors, green means go is what i tell the kids and adults, applies to everybody on the roadways. in san jose we are tracking the report of a table on highway 87 northbound around curtner, that could be a trouble spot if that table gets hit, could be trouble for the car that hits it as well. i will track that and let you know if anything extended is going on through san jose. getting over towards san francisco there may be an issue getting across that bay bridge right around harrison street, one of the off ramps there into

the city, we do have reports of a disabled vehicle blocking your fast lane. the bridge crew usually takes quick care of that. it may still be moving sometimes we call that a slow roller getting across into the city. a patch of fog in the north bay, not a problem for drivers. and the bay bridge we do see the sensors changing and the backup coming right on schedule just about 5:20 is when we've been seeing that happen even on lighter days like today. back to you. coming up an airline fee has could he. >> it leaves passengers and flight crews in limbo. >> it could impact your holiday travel plans.

welcome back, everyone. a good thursday morning to you. 5:25 right now. you know, if you're flying somewhere for the holidays and going on american airlines the next two weeks may be a little nerve-racking, that's because americans pilot union says a scheduling glitch allowed too many pilots that requested time off between the 17th and the 31st and that's left some 15,000 flights during the holiday without any pilots at all. the union now says millions of passengers may never get off the ground. >> frankly, these passengers and our flight crews are in limbo. we have a lot of pilots and flight crews who are defending on a reliable schedule just as our passengers are.

>> american is scrambling to cover the short annual by adding reserve pilots and pay other pilots overtime. the airline says it's doing all that it can to avoid any cancellations. new this morning, an alarming recall to tell you about, a risk of mold exposure in toys "r" us taking 6,000 clay craft kits off its shelves. the recall includes totally me. mold can be present in the clay and pose a risk of respiratory or other infections. toys "r" us have received three reports of mold in the clay but no injuries reported. new federal rules on school lunches are getting failing grades from health experts. the department of agriculture allows schools to skip whole grains, also salty food and sweetened milk are allowed. critics say the new rules puts too much priority on meeting budget cuts and nutrition levels are being diminished. coming up, taking action against alaska airlines, the

glistening. so clear that you can see them. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. talk about what the weather is feeling like in that beautiful scene that we just saw, let's head over to vianey. >> it's been a great work of very fall -- wintery start this past couple days, we have been seeing 30s and 40s and they are here to stay. finally we are waking up to about 36 degrees for napa, 41 degrees for mill valley, walnut creeks at 37 degrees this hour. as you head out early you will definitely want to get a nice sweater, somebody you can shed throughout the day because those temperatures have been warming up quite nicely, especially for areas like san jose, look at those temperature trends, if you notice by 9:00, 10:00, we welcome that sunshine that will help us warm up into the 50s, 51 degrees by 9:00 a.m., by 10:00 a.m., 55 and eventually we will start climbing into those 60s for today's forecast. we are expecting to be 1 to 2 degrees warmer than yesterday. expect a high of 66 for aj and

then we're going to keep this dry weather trend through friday before we see the arrival of some clouds. keep on enjoying these clear skies, but, mike, i see there is a bay bridge backup. >> clear is not the word necessarily for the bay bridge toll plaza because the metering lights are on, showed that to you about ten minutes ago. we are right on pace and in fact the fast track lanes are moving well and these cars zipping by on either side of the backup. carpool three or four getting the advantage. we look out to the map and the entire bay showing pretty much green sensors, a little slowing out of the altamonte, typical coming into the altamonte corridor, oakland southbound 880 as you're coming across 29 there was a vehicle that moved to the center divide, no slowing shows up but there may be a tow crew that has to pull them out of the center divide. i continue to follow this in the north bay, this is the one serious incident westbound highway 116 ativan necessary road, between van ness and east

courthouse will go before a judge in san jose today. police caught john bivins last week at a san leandro hotel. he and another inmate had been on the run since a coordinated escape earlier this month. those men are from east palo alto and were originally arrested for robbing a sunnyvale verizon store. a san francisco police officer continues his recovery from a traumatic brain injury. it happened on the line of duty. last night hundreds of people attended a fundraiser. officers from the tenderloin station sent him a video message. he was on his bike last month when a fleeing suspect's car hit him. officers say the department thinks about him every day. >> it is a daily reminder when i go in and suit up that my friend is not there. i walk past his locker every day and it's not easy. >> while we're here trying to support him he's in a different place fighting for his life and this is the least that we can do. >> there's also a go fund me page set up to help the family.

>> happening today the next step in a new connector for cyclists and walkers in east palo alto. crews will break ground on a highway 101 overpass, it starts at clark avenue and east bay shore and it will end at newell road. you are looking at the renderings of that project provided by the city. officials say they expect work to be finished in 2019. smart train riders will now have reportedly a little more room on some of the busiest runs. the press democrat the north bay's new train line is adding an extra car to the four busiest round trips every day, that means trains will run with three cars instead of two. and cars, trains, buses are all o moving pretty well around the green. the table that was reported on highway 87 at curtner has been cleared from the report and no crash, no following incident ins and that's good news. still a disabled vehicle southbound 880 at 29th in the

center divide. over here we see ray little bit of a slowing where there was the disabled vehicle getting off of the bridge at harrison. chp has not yet arrived so i can't confirm exactly what's happening. those speed sensors are starting to move a little better. an easy drive getting over towards the bay bridge, the metering lights are on and a little build for the upper east shore freeway. here are our transit agencies at the bottom. marcus was talking about smart train moving with no delays and now maybe more people on some of those lines. >> like to see the weekend right around the corner, is the weather going to cooperate? >> it is in the bay area. for lake tahoe it might cooperate if you are already up there because you are going to be able to hit the slopes this weekend. i know that there are a lot of holiday events going on. now, this is actually for today but i figured why not go ahead and share it with you. holiday parade of lights in broadway plaza for walnut creek, the temperatures in the 50s around the time that it's set to start and then it will go a

little cold out there, make sure to bundle up the kids an their family. i'm pretty sure a lot of are going to be buying a lot of hot chocolate. saturday's forecast this one is a little tricky because the models are showing the majority of that rainfall sticking off to the north bay, but by the midafternoon we might get a very light chance and i mean very light chance of seeing some rain possibly all the way up to north of the golden gate bridge, though the coast and bay inland just expect a ton of cloud cover, temperatures will remain comfortable in the 60s. as we head into sunday's forecast look at all of that sunshine. temperatures will drop down into the 50s for our overall highs. if you're heading out that's supposed to be a live camera of heavenly, but heavenly and lake tahoe we are expecting snow on safety with the arrival of that system not bringing too much rain here but as we head into saturday night and sunday morning. if you are going to drive up there friday tomorrow and early saturday will be your best road conditions as arrival of that snow kind of makes its way in.

and san jose eventually will start to climb into the 60s as well. now, i want to talk about your future cast because i've been mentioning how we have changes on the way for the weekend, what's going to happen, the long range models were conflicting all week long but now we have a better and i think a more recent answer for you especially now that we're closer to the weekend. on saturday about 6:00 a.m. we got cloud cover in the forecast, in the future cast. so definitely going to be a cloudy start and then that storm system stays off to the north, so a lot of oregon will be seeing that snow but it might inch towards the far north bay, ukiah, santa rosa might get the chance of seeing showers in there. look at all of that snow. so one thing is for sure, lake tahoe expecting a pretty good amount of snow out there. let's get right to that snow forecast. this is our future cast for the snow. if you notice not heavy snow, but definitely a couple inches that will help play out to all of those skiers and all those snow borders out there. an overall white picture, south

la tahoe looking good, mt. shasta looking good and so is crescent city. the next seven days will play out quite dry. a cooldown on saturday but bretty good out there. >> we have the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza but we were also watching the issue on the san francisco side. mild slowing building now through hayward southboundel 80 soming out of san leandro. pretty standard for the east bay. over here we don't see that slowing anymore westbound 88, harrison street. chp was not able to get over there to do the swing through so they haven't confirmed anything going on there except for the fact that we did see slowing on our sensors and we saw it clear. i'm going to say that disabled vehicle likely cleared from the scene. right now the only thing is that backup at the bay bridge toll plaza for those metering lights that are on. there is a little road weather index fog reported in novato coming down in towards san rafael but we haven't heard about any problems and a live look our camera shows you there are no issues, the traffic flows nicely here.

researchers estimate 57% of kids will be obese by the anyone of 35 and right now the cdc says about 40% of adults are classified as obese. researchers blame the trend on increased screen time and bad diets. a follow-up this morning, a go fund me account has been set up for an elderly couple whose apartment was damaged in a gas explosion in san francisco. it happened monday morning along mission street. the couple and their 43-year-old son are looking for a new place to live while their unit is being repaired. the car and belongings were ruined during that explosion. their son who is deaf was at home at the time of the explosion, he got out of the building when he started feeling those vibrations. no one was injured, san francisco leaders are now calling for a hearing on that gas leak. happening today firefighters making sure people know how to stay safe in the event of a fire. san francisco fire department hosting a community safety fair with fire prevention tips as well as demonstrations. they will answer questions about inspectio inspections.
