sylmar. >> the creek fire is at 11,000 acres. the rye fire at 5,000 acres and the thomas fire burnt around 55,000 acres. we sent our own crews to ventura to talk about what has happened and the impact from the thomas fire. >> jodi hernandez filed this report. >> reporter: a long and stressful night for folks here in ventura county. you can see the hillsides have been ablaze all through the night. this morning, the thread is far from over. the wind-fueled thomas fire continues to spread in ventura county, leaving entire neighborhoods aglow. the people who live there on edge. many are choosing not to evacuate. instead, they are doing what they can to protect their homes. >> a bunch of structures that have been burnt. ventura is totally burnt up. i hope we are not part of the

remain aglow this morning. 1100 firefighters on the fire line, including many from the bay area. they are hoping the conditions improve today. in ventura county, i'm jodi hernandez, "today in the bay." >> jodi has been posting video and pictures since she arrived. you can follow her on twitter. live to oakland where it will be another day of closures at day care centers, libraries and city hall. many continue to strike today. it was a long day yesterday, workers demanded a contract. they want a salary increase and benefits for part-time and temporary employees. the mayor addressed that issue yesterday. here is what she said about those raises. >> we cannot make financial decisions today that we cannot afford either today, but

particularly in the long term. >> we need them to look at the money and say, do we need another high-rise and does that high-rise need tax breaks or do we need to be able to pay for more workers? >> that second person you heard from is a library aide worker. we are going to follow the situation in oakland and bring updates as soon as we get them. >> 5:05. discussions to bring express lanes are revving up. public meetings will be held tonight. >> sharon katsuda is live with a look at the impact it could have for commuters. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: good morning. you can see traffic is not too heavy right now. that is sure to change in the next couple hours. this project with the express lanes is set to ease congestion on this major corridor to san francisco. caltrans is looking for your input on express lanes in this area. the proposal is to charge drivers in the express lanes

during the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., similar to other parts of the bay area. we saw the express lanes. other express lanes charge from several dollars to less than a dollar to use it during peak commute hours. the express lane was along highway 101 from whipple road to 380 near san francisco airport. if approved, the construction could begin in may, 2019. a public hearing will take place at redwood city at san mateo hall. live in san mateo county, sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, sharon. it is 5:06. happening today, president trump scheduled to announce the u.s. will recognize jerusalem as the capitol of israel. currently, it is in tel-aviv. it's where the u.s. embassy is located. the president will sign a waiver

to move it to jerusalem for a couple years. that was one of his campaign promises. palestinians consider jerusalem their capitol. people could be seen burning pictures of president trump in bethlehem last night. andrea mitchell reports the trump administration is divided on this. he's been told it could complicate his quest for peace in the middle east. >> despite the warnings, he was supported by the vice president and u.n. ambassador, nikki haley. he was warned by defense secretary mattis and tillerson. we'll have more coming up on "today." >> 7:00, after "today in the bay" is the "today" show. overnight, israel's president gave a speech, but he did not mention the issue. looking live at capitol hill, the debate over gun continues in congress. the house is set to vote on gun legislation. it started as a bipartisan plan

to tighting the background check system. some republicans tied the measure to an expansion of conceal carry rights, which the nra considered a top priority. they are calling the move sabotage. looks like the mayor of san francisco will sign recreational marijuana regulations into law. the board of supervisors gave their approval. ed lee could sign it into law today. if that happens, san francisco will officially legalize marijuana sales on january 6th. that's five days after the drug becomes legal for adults. right now at 5:08, as you get ready to head out the door, have on a hat, warm coat and gloves, too. look at the temperatures in the south bay as we take a live look outside in san jose. 39 degrees. 35 in the tri-valley. 30 degrees now in the north bay. with some well below freezing

temperatures in spots. the story on the bus stop, walking to school, how chilly it is. it's only going to be 46 degrees in san francisco as you are going to see those temperatures gradually warming up today by the time they get out of school. it will be in the upper 50s. a bit of a breeze with a lot of sunshine. we'll talk more about today's temperature trend and fremont coming up in four minutes. mike is telling me about the early build at the bay bridge. >> that's right. one of the factors may be they just reopened one of the cash lanes. one is still closed. same thing on the right approach where lane 14 also remains closed. that will be more indefinitely because of the crash over the weekend. looking at the build for the fast track lanes. this may ease up a tad bit. we are looking at the map. one of the reasons why, toward the end of the year, folks heading into the office earlier and out of the office earlier, do somer rands, perhaps they

eyes at when it was 3,000, passed 12,000 last night. a few hours approached $13,000 for bit coin. next week, the chicago boards option will allow them to buy futures so investors can bet against bit coin. the senate may have passed a tax bill, but congress is debating what will be in it as it tries to reconcile the house version that passed earlier this year. lawmakers are pushing for a rewrite so americans can continue to deduct state and local taxes. if you try to pick the worst parts of the two bills as far as california goes, it is the senate rule that will no longer be able to duck what we pay. limit what we can deduct for property taxes and cap mortgage rate interest. google taking youtube off amazon products.

after amazon cut down on the number of google products that sold. this catches customers in the middle. you can't watch amazon prime or used to not on apple tv. just this morning, apple said we are going to bring amazon prime to apple. you have all these competing devices walling each other off. except that apple announcement. >> they are including. >> watch shares in roku. they don't have itunes. >> they have their own thing. you know what else we are watching? that breaking news out of southern california. all the fires have been burning there. take a look at this. there is a huge inferno blaze burning near the getty museum off the 405, not far from sunset boulevard. look at the size of it already. it is so concerning because, as many of you know, there are a lot of art connoisseurs in the bay area. people go, travel throughout the world to visit the getty because

of the vast selection of art. we are monitoring the fire burning as well as several others. a lot of bay area crews are there lending a hand in the fire fight. >> as the fires keep burning, two television shows are halt production. producers are shutting down to avoid danger to the actors and crew members and will resume filming when it's safe. the cbs show "slots" is suspended. the rams have canceled their practice. >> a lot of concerns of air quality. so sad. we just went through that with the northern california fires. >> unfortunately, i have been looking at the wind speed forecast. the winds will pick up again tomorrow evening. that is the main concern. a break in the wind speeds. i want to show you the wind speed forecast for southern california. for tomorrow, starting out or rather for today, as we see the

winds throughout the morning, starting out at about 25 miles per hour, then we start to see those winds picking up once again for tonight into early tomorrow and look at how these sustained winds increase for the evening, up to about 45 to possibly 50 miles per hour sustained with the strong santa ana winds. that may fan more flames as we bring it back home, we have freeze warnings in effect. very cold and dry air. all the areas shaded in purple, under a freeze warning until 9:00 this morning. here is a look at those temperatures and the reason why we have freeze warnings in effect. santa rosa dropped to 30 degrees. napa is close at 36 degrees. some of the valleys we are seeing colder readings this morning. as you head out the door, it's ten to around 13 degrees colder than yesterday morning. especially in livermore, napa, santa rosa, much colder than

yesterday. this afternoon, it warms up quickly and a few degrees warmer than yesterday. a wide range in temperatures from morning to afternoon. make sure you are prepared for all of that, dressing in layers. up to 62 degrees in oakland. 62 in palo alto. 63 in half-moon bay. heading out the door in san jose for the school day, packing the kids bags, a day for a very chilly morning and some nice, warm clothes. 40 degrees to start. making it up to 61 degrees by 10:00. going out to the hiking trails, a cold morning in the south bay. 37 degrees. but, it does quickly warm up. lots of sunshine and cooling down, once again, fairly quickly at 4:00, 51 degrees. we're going to keep those 60s in the forecast for san francisco and one thing you may notice, no rain in the forecast over the next seven days. it's unusual for december. as we go beyond the forecast, still not seeing a lot of rain

here. i'll continue to track that for you. mike is tracking the bay bridge back up. >> that's rilgght. it continues. we have the metering lights on and the back up fills all the lanes. looked dramatic, but it was a look at the map. only at the approach. west grand avenue, longer now as you look at the map. the slowing has not reached the berkeley curve. that's the good news. an easy drive down the area. 15 minutes from highway 4 to where the back up approaches. a nice drive. remember, the north bay is under a freeze warning up there and frost as well. you might need to use that credit card on the windshield. a little build for hayward, southbound 880 past the 92, the san mateo bridge. getting over here in san mateo itself, southbound 101 at 92, past that interchange, we had that bus still there, but a crew is on scene. it's not a problem because

at 5:26, on your wednesday morning, we continue to follow fire that is are burning in southern california and take a look at this. so concerning now. the brush fire has spread. this is very close to the getty center. you can see it off the 405. look how close the flames are. this is an incredible museum. we want to listen into knbc, our sister station as they cover it. >> reporter: as of yet, i have not seen that happen, but, of course, we are definitely very concerned for this community here at the top of the hill. a community of larger homes here in the beverly hills area. right off the 405 freeway, just on the east side of it, to be exact. >> on the east side of the 405, this is helpful for viewers

because as we know, the getty center is on the west side. so, if we are talking the east side, still, an incredibly populated area. maybe when you get the opportunity, as you are rotating the chopper around, you can show the mapping mechanism to get a better sense of where this is. you said queens borough lane. >> that's correct. they are pulling up the map. >> great concerns in southern california, but good clarity of where the location of this fire is. in fact, on the other side of the 405 freeway. there are some massive homes there, in the heart of beverly hills on the hill top. >> right. >> such concern. >> a lot of people know the area from tv. >> exactly. coming up at 5:27, we continue with the other fires burning in southern california. the bay area sent crews there. the danger certainly isn't over, yet.

at 5:30 on your wednesday morning, we continue to cover breaking news from southern california. a new wildfire is growing and moving dangerously close to the iconic getty museum in los angeles. it is on the 405, the other side of the freeway. a lot of homes there in beverly hills, close to going up in flames. great concerns for the community there. >> good morning to you. thank you for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we continue to follow what's going on in southern california. strong winds hopefully died down. they are said to ramp up again in our neck of the woods. it is a cold start. >> maybe this will make you feel better, our high temperatures in the upper 60s by this afternoon in san jose and napa. low 60s in oakland today and san francisco, expect a high of 64. a lot of sunshine. we keep that sunshine throughout

and dry conditions remain, meaning the wildfires could spread more. >> "today" show miguel alma gur is live with what firefighters are facing. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i want to let you know that fire you were looking at, those live pictures is by the getty center on the 405, not far from l.a.x. the hillsides, there are severa multimillion dollar homes and the getty museum. firefighters are throwing many assets there. they are spread across the region where we are at. home after home, completely destroyed. we know at least 150 structures damaged or destroyed. there is no question that number will rise when crews are able to get up in the air this morning. a better perspective of how widespread that damage is. hundreds of structures, hundreds of homes have been gone. during our trip here this morning, we can see the fire

burning on both sides of the 101, which is where the fire is burning from the mountains all the way to the ocean, near and around santa barbara and outside los angeles. fire crews are deploying all assets available to the wildfires. four in this area and the new one you are seeing and talking about a short time ago around the getty center. even at this hour, in cold temperatures, the weather here is precarious. it is fanning flames. those winds are driving so many of these wildfires. that's the big concern, not just here, but fire locations across this area. gusts could reach 70 miles an hour tomorrow because of those santa ana winds. the firefighters have their hands full today and will be very busy in the days to come. back to you. >> the fire burning a mile north of the getty center. thank you. it's a long day for those firefighters. stay tuned for the "today" show. miguel will have a full report

yes, definitely has the potential to impact a lot of people. this is based on demand as far as how the price increases as parking meters around san francisco. the goal here is, if the parking meter is a bit more expensive, that may shorten the period of time that driver decides to park in a specific spot. as far as reaching that number of $8 an hour, it could be a while before we see that happen at all. here are the details. mta voted on this ewe unanimous mousily improving the dhangs. the parking meters will change more during peak times. it will be less when demand is low. that is applied to the more than 30,000 meter spaces around the city. could see a low of 50 cents an hour and a high of $8 an hour. it will vary by time of day and block by block. it will be adjusted four times a year, depending on the use in the previous quarter. it will only be an increase of

center on the other side of the 405 freeway this morning, about a mild afwra tway from the gett center. northbound 405 shut down at getty center drive. you can imagine what traffic is like in southern california. look at this, the flames that continue. firefighters have a tough fight. a lot of rough tur rain. there are gorgeous homes there. about 5400 acres, we understand, have been consumed in this fire alone. we have bay area firefighters there. they are concentrating a lot of efforts moving the firefighters because of the concern of it not far from the getty center museum. we'll continue to monitor this. 5:46. new this morning, a dramatic increase in the demand for fentanyl. it's an opioid. they seized 3-5 times more the past year. in a statement, officials say an active crackdown have con transcribe yupted to the change.

earlier this year, our investigative unit took a look at the prevalence of the drug and surveyed nine bay area counties show that fentanyl-related deaths are on the rise. at least 130 deaths in our area since 2015. you can find the detailed information on our website www.nbcbayarea.com. new this morning, state regulators are making a push to suspend wells fargo's insurance business after accusing them of issuing policies without customer's knowledge. they say wells fargo charged 1500 customers for platinum policies without their knowledge or permission. the bank has not commented on the the allegations. they will xilt exit the personal insurance business. the democrats will, a democrat, rather, will move to

due in court. it's the city's first homicide in two years. she is expected to appear in a courtroom later this morning. investigators say she drove over her friend, 25-year-old sally hernandez in june and took off. she faces murder and felony hit and run charges. new this morning, the california doctor whose work was highlighted in a movie resigned. he says the san joakim sheriff's office, an autopsy concluded -- i don't know what this is trying to say here. let me try to figure it out. he overroad autopsy conclusions to try to protect law enforcement. now, here is a look at part of his resignation letter. he says he was concerned and fearful. the sheriff asked him to make changes to autopsy reports, including one case where someone died during an altercation with police. he says the sheriff labeled
