those clothes. it will be cold to start and warming up quickly as you go through the day. as we look at the numbers, as you get ready to step out, tri-valley, 35 degrees and 40 in the peninsula and south bay. 47 in san francisco. check out the north bay. literally freezing. we have freeze warnings in effect for the north bay valleys. as we look at san francisco and the forecast for several days, it stays dry. temperatures stay the same as well. cold mornings and mild afternoons. what we can expect over the next several days. i'll talk more about this in a few minutes. mike has an update on the crash in hayward. >> we are going to start with the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic flow is moving well. approach toward the bay bridge, itself. the fast track lanes. they show slowing through hayward. smooth drive south until you get to 238. slowing, but the crash cleared to the shoulder. i'll show the break down. back to you. >> thank you very much.

we continue to follow breaking news out of southern california. take a look. several wildfires rage out of control this morning. these are live aerials over a new fire that is now erupted within the last hour. near the getty center in los angeles, not far from -- it's off the 405 freeway, not far from sunset boulevard, now, we have learned within the last 20 minutes or so, the fire has grown to 50 acres, up from six acres before. there are winds in that area burning 25 miles per hour this morning, fueling and fanning those flames. i want to listen in to our sister station, knbc. >> you don't need to wait for the order to evacuate. if you can, do it now, before the winding streets through this neighborhood get jammed. as you were saying, this is an area that is heavily populated. you can see all those lights there. those are residential areas.

where you see a street name, they are residential areas at the top of the hill east of the 405 freeway. this entire area, for the most part is brush area. it is heavy brush, which means it is going to burn and burn really well. but, look at this. everywhere you see all these streets names here and the lights, they are all homes. now, i'm on the southern most portion of the fire. again, we continue to watch those homes as the fire continues to burn dangerously close. >> bear with us for a second. we are getting information from our producer that there are reports of fire from chp. >> 1300 block and several of the homes have been threatened. you can see water dropping. helicopters trying to drop water in a large part of this area.

they need several access to capture this massive fire that is burning. right now, reports of the 1300 block of cast ya know drive of structures threatened. possibly burning. we are waiting to get confirmation. this fire is burning to the east. under no formal evacuation orders, as of now. there are people evacuating. lapd is there right now asking people to leave if you are very close to the fire. we are getting information that some people have already evacuated. this is early in the morning and still dark outside. if you can evacuate as soon as possible, better. these roads in this area are winding roads. if you look closely at this home, you can see people walking around. don't know who they are, but through the smoke, you can see someone running across. >> people are literally running here. it does not look like a

firefighter. >> it's not a firefighter. it is likely a resident from this home. i feel so bad for this person. he's trying to do whatever he can with his own garden hose. i mean, i understand that he's trying to save his home but look at the big picture. look at how close the flames are coming. his home is completely surrounded here. you mentioned the 1300 block. that is what we are looking at here. this person and his family, if anybody else is inside, please leave. there are fire engines on the front side of the home. hopefully they will get in touch with this individual and get him to evacuate. at this point, there was very little a garden hose is going to do you. you have to go. >> you can see the fire on the other side as well. if they don't leave soon, they could be surrounded by the fire and it could be too late to get out of the home. >> people don't realize, you

don't need to be touched by the flame to be burned. with the large tree that is you see there, the flame length could be four times the length of the vegetation. this is an incredibly dangerous situation. we have seen it time and time again, homeowners trying to save their property. it's too late. people have to get out of these neighborhoods. whit johnson from knbc describing it really, really well. the threat of the flames, smoke inhilation and people in the areas, it is tragic to see what is going on there in southern california. this is off the 405, not far from the getty center to give you an idea of what is happening. it is heart breaking to see people struggling to save their own homes. we went through that in northern california and the fire fight is fierce. there are other fires burning as well. crews really working around the clock. they are fighting the thomas fire in ventura county. these are live pictures from the

ground there. 27,000 people have been evacuated as this fire burns. right now, four significant fires in southern california area. here is the latest look at this hour. that thomas fire is the largest, burning 55,000 acres. you are looking at new video showing the fire as it jumped highway 101 and reached the pacific ocean. meantime, the creek fire near sylmar burned 11,000 acres and the rye fire 5,000 acres. that fire near the getty center is 50 acres right now. we are going to switch gears and the discussion to bring lanes to 101 is ramping up. >> sharon katsuda is live along the freeway in burling game with the impact it could have on a lot of people's commute. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: laura and marcus. well, the traffic looks good right now. we know the usual in a couple

hours, it is going to be stop and go traffic in this area. the goal of this project, if it goes through, to keep the traffic moving at 45 miles per hour in the express lanes. caltrans is looking for your input on express lanes in this area along highway 101. charge drivers in the express lanes from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. similar to highway 680. other express lanes charge several dollars to less than a dollar to use it in peak hours. it stretches highway 101 to highway 380 near sfo. if approved, the express lane construction could begin in may of 2019. a public hearing will take place in redwood city and city hall. live in san mateo county, sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thank you, sharon.

right now, as we come up on 6:08, a live look in san jose. a clear start this morning. it's cold. campbell, the temperature trend will be upper 30s and up to 46 degrees by 10:00. then we are going to see those temperatures warming up into the low 60s. normal for this time of year, 59 degrees. as we check out our high temperatures today, upper 60s for san jose and napa as well as santa rosa. san francisco today, 64. let's head over to mike. back to that crash in hayward. >> the lanes are clear as far as the nimitz goes, we have this jammed traffic. the off ramp is closed. a look at the bay. now zoom into the slowing. the orange sensors, south 880 past tennyson, orange is better than red. as crews arrive, just the off ramp is affected. it will be an issue. industrial is very close. move back there or coming off the san mateo bridge, take the

navato side, a new crash reported at the toll plaza. we'll take a look. >> thank you, kari and mike. we continue to follow breaking news from southern california. in fact, we want to listen in to our sister station, knbc as they cover the latest fire that is very close to the getty center. >> covering since yesterday. the fires can and will jump the freeway. so, that is the rush right now and the concern is to get everybody off of that freeway and away from the flames. >> let's bring in ileana as we watch the fire spread. the latest update is 50-60 acres. they have had wind gusts, 25 miles per hour, not as strong as we have seen with the previous fires. what are the conditions like from your perspective in news chopper 4 right now? >> the conditions are very smokey, whit. i'll pull the shot out so you can see what i'm seeing. thousands of feet up in the air.

the smoke plume is as tall as we are. it is moving toward the south, toward the coast. that is what we are experiencing up here. that's not the bulk of the fire. there's more fire to the north and that's going to be the fire that is going to be closer to that home there at the top that we have been watching from the beginning. that's the home off queensborough lane. it's toward the south. i can give you a good look at the home and how massive this home is. if that home would have caught on fire, we are dealing with basically a commercial structure fire even though it's a residence because of the size. there's structure protection in place for this community. again, we are looking at this in the darkness. it was difficult to grasp how many homes are here. >> as we widen out it gives a good idea of how many homes are burning in southern california.

this is one of four burning in the area. a big problem there. we'll continue to check in with them. as the wildfires continue burning, two television shows are halting production. "westworld" shoots scenes in the area. they are shutting down to stop danger for the actors and crew members. shooting for cbs show "slot" is suspended. the los angeles rams cancelling practice today. a major investor is stepping away after allegations of sexual harassment. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. an investor deeply involved in uber. >> hyper loop as well. sherman had been accused of assaulting women in one instance at an uber party. he infatically denies the charge and is filing a lawsuit. he says he's stepping away from various boards he sits on, taking a leave of absence to

clear his name. the markets had their worst day in a month on tuesday. nasdaq had the first three-day losing streak since august. bit coin, which i rolled my eyes at when it was worst $3,000, just passed $12,000 last night. next week, the chicago board option exchange will allow people to buy bit coin futures so investors can start betting against bit coin. congress debating what will actually be in the final tax bill as it tries to reconcile the senate's bill with the house version. lawmakers are pushing for a rewrite so americans can continue to deduct state and local taxes. if you were to pick the worst parts of the two tax bills as far as california goes, it is the senate rule that will no longer be able to deduct what we pay in state and local taxes. limits to property taxes and

caps on how much to deduct on the mortgage rate interest as well. amazon prime video coming to apple tv. that was just announced. google is pulling youtube from its amazon desooiss. there's no perfect tv box, but with amazon prime now on apple tv, i have to say it's probably your best bet. now you get itunes, youtube, amazon prime. regular tv. you get us. don't get rid of that. roku also makes a box that doesn't have that offer. it may be in trouble. >> yeah, that will be interesting to see. a lot of people love to travel for the holidays. the holiday travel period will be busier from last year for u.s. airlines. a group estimated 51 million passengers will fly during the 21-day period from december 15 to january 4th. that's up 3% from last year. the busiest travel days will be

december 21st, 22nd and the 26th. the lightest will be the 16th. christmas eve, christmas day and new year's eve. experts say cheaper fares and improving the economy is making it more affordable. if you like to get away, you are. >> traveling on the actual holiday is easy. sometimes you have the plane to yourself. almost like first class. >> you get there in time for the christmas meal. >> maybe you have family coming in to town for the next several days. they are going to enjoy warm weather but also a lot of sunshine. our continued dry weather will be here for a while longer. here is a live look out in san rafael. looking at san rafael because temperatures are below freezing. a lot of people out there on the roads. seven day forecast coming up on the bottom of the screen showing more of this very warm weather over the next few days. freeze warnings for the areas

shaded in purple. solano, a frost advisory. allow extra time. scrape the frost off the windshield. here is a look at the current temperatures. santa rosa, freezing. napa, one degree above freezing. we are close to freezing in livermore as well. there may be frosty conditions there. morgan hill, if you go to gilroy, below freezing right now. we are feeling temperatures colder than yesterday morning. napa, 15 degrees colder now than it was yesterday when you headed out the door. look at the highs for this afternoon. reaching into the upper 60s. it's going to be very warm. our temperatures warm up quickly, up to 67 in danville. oakland, 62 degrees. lower 60s for half-moon bay. 67 in redwood city. san francisco, 62 degrees on the embarcadero and upper 60s in santa rosa after that very cold start. as we look at the big picture here, the satellite imagery

shows that there's still a lot of clouds well to the west of us. none close to the bay area. we are going to stay clear, also dry because of a strong area of high pressure that is going to keep any rain away from our area for at least the next seven days. tech tec temperatures 60s for san francisco and the same for inland areas. mike says it's a relatively good commute. >> keyword relatively. this looks horrible, but seasoned commuters, it's not bad. we will show you the map. no major problems, but we have the build. off highway 4, under a half hour to get to the bay bridge. the biggest back up is 580 and 24 toward the area at the toll plaza itself. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. the south bay kicking in. it's affecting tennyson. it does not affect the freeways.

welcome back, everyone. 6:25. nbc bay area responds to a man who says his leaky windows cost thousands of dollars in repairs. >> he thought the window company should reimburse him. chris chmura takes on the case. >> glen built a sonoma vacation home ten years ago and installed anderson windows. glen says they now leak. he says anderson representatives have come out multiple times to fix the leaking, but it has not worked. glen says over the years, he spent $7,000 repairing damage from the leaks. the biggest expense was hiring a contractor to tear out and replace dry wall and base board. the windows are still under warranty.

dangerously close to the iconic getty museum in los angeles. we are just getting word at least 500 drivers in their cars trapped in the fire zone off the 405. big problem there in southern california. here, starting off with a cold morning. good morning to you. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. right now, we want to go to meteorologist, kari hall tracking those cold temperatures as we walk out the door. >> yes, maybe you are walking the kids to school in san jose, temperatures upper 30s. the school day forecast, 39 degrees as that school bell rings. as the kids are in school, temperatures warming up by the time they get out of school. it will be 61 degrees. so, maybe after taking them to school, you will be driving up the peninsula. that morning commute in the mid-40s for the peninsula and then by your lunch hour, 57 degrees. i'll have a look at that complete microclimate forecast. mike gets us out the door for that commute.

>> we have a new issue. i just showed you the san mateo bridge. it was clear. now, near the foster city side, reports of a crash there. i'm trying to get lane information to chp. slowing along the flat section enhan enhanced by that crash. we see westbound shows that build, but that would be the typical pattern here. a crash, itself, reported arnds the high-rise. i'll track that. the dumbarton bridge is a good suggestion to use. south bay starts to build and getting over toward the bay bridge, more slowing because of that volume of traffic. 40 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza. back to you. >> thank you, mike. our coverage continues throughout the morning there. you can hear that person in the helicopter there, that's who you hear explain whing what's going there. stay with nbc bay area news for the instant coverage on all three wildfires burning in southern california.

>> that's right. there's a fifth fire burning in southern california. it broke out before 5:00 a.m. near the getty center. part of 405 is shut down, turning around traffic on interstate there. officials tell our sister station, at least 500 vehicles are trapped inside that fire zone. now, to a live look in ventura county as well, where overnight the thomas fire jumped highway 101. it reached the pacific ocean. thomas fire is the largest, having burned 55,000 acres. the creek fire, 11,000 acres, the rye fire, 5,000 acres. the new fire burned 50 acres so far. it's been rapidly growing. here is reaction from someone who was forced to flee. >> honestly, i have nowhere. it's hard seeing your hometown be like this. just to be helpless. >> at last check, officials said

area where the fire broke. >> it looks like this is natalie, the back up video are fire trucks, several fire trucks driving with their sirens on. this is the back up they were talki talking about. so many out battling the fires, they needed to call in extra resources. hopefully they are going to help out the crews already on the scene. >> we are doing to continue to follow this from the news room. quite frightening. you can see the row of firefighters attempting to get up the hill to get to the fire that is threatening. there are massive homes. natalie moralez is trapped in her home. we will monitor what is going on. winds 25 miles per hour in that area. 500 people trapped in their cars. now just trying to get out of that area. if you are familiar with southern california freeways, it can be a tough one. we'll continue to monitor that.

very busy morning there. 6:34 right now. change is coming to parking meters in san francisco this morning. the meters will now be priced all based on demand. "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us with a closer look at the plan. pete, this is going to impact thousands of people. you know, it looks like pete is not able to hear us but knows he is live. pete, can you hear me? >> we wear an ear piece. maybe it's not working. we will check back in a bit. it is going to be meters that could range to almost $8 an hour. we'll try to clear that up in a moment. >> 6:35. continuing coverage. one south bay high school is urging stunlts to stop posting pictures of a body they found on the school grounds yesterday.

we brought this story as breaking news during the midday newscast. police say the man's body was discovered around 7:00 a.m. near mt. pleasant high school in san jose. police call him a homicide victim and he had been shot. he was not a student or employee. there are no announcements of any closure today. we expect the school to operate as normal. 6:36. san jose state students who push to dismiss a professor on the grounds of sexual harassment are celebrating departure. students against sexual harassment threw what they labeled a victory party after the professor resigned after they found he sexually harassed a student, asking her multiple times to date him. students led the drive to have him removed. >> take action. he did resign. he's not coming back. that's one we won't have to be

worried about in the classroom. >> documents show he filed a claim against the university saying his rights to due process were violated. the school paid him a settlement in exchange for resigning. we reached out to him. 6:37. a stop executive at stanford's business school resigned after a data breach. the data improperly stored in a shared file led to the chronicle. they misled students about the fellowship grant. the student was one of those who stumbled upon the data. the mercury news reports the chief digital officer stepped down. new this morning, 22 russian athletes who tested positive for doping in the 2014 winter olympics filed an appeal to the highest court. it includes ten athletes who won ten medals in sewture and later stripped from it.

they banned russia from taking part in february's winter games. qualified russian athletes will be able to compete under the olympic flag. it extends to those who have not tested positive for doping before. changes coming to parking meters in san francisco. the meters priced, based on demand. let's check in with pete suratos with a closer look at that plan. can you hear me now? >> reporter: i can hear you now, laura. good morning to you. this parking meter increase is based on demand. i'll start in mid january. the goal is if the parking meter is more expensive folks won't park there for long, trying to fix those parking issues in san francisco. here are the details on how it is going to work. as the demand increases in a certain area, the charges will go up during those peak times and less when demand is low. the low is around 50 cents an hour to a high of $8 an hour.

that's going to be adjusted four times a year depending on the use the previous quarter. it's an increase of 25 cents a month. don't expect a drastic change immediately. san francisco has 7,000 parking meters already demand based in the city through sf park. the good news, the average rate at the parking meters has been $2.50. that's good news for folks concerned about the prices potentially increasing. it will expand citywide to 30,000 parker meters in mid january. pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> change for a lot of people. >> cheaper to take uber. >> 6:39. new this morning, "time" magazine highlights the me too movement. "time" named the silent breakers as the person of the year. the editor-in-chief says it me too movement where men and women speak out about their experience with harassment and assault

spread rapidly. the "today" show spoke with alyssa alyssa milano who helped it. >> i thought if women could come forward and say me, too, two beautiful words she started. we can shape it and get an idea of the magnitude of the issue and problem. i sent the tweet and went to sleep. i woke up and there are 53,000 replies. >> gave a lot of people the outlet to speak out. you can see the full interview that includes the movement's original creator. that's after "today in the bay." the magazine did select two runners up. china's president came in third place. president trump placed second. he was the top choice last year and last month, he claimed he turned down the magazine's offer to be this year's story. the magazine said this morning, that was a completely false statement. so far, no new reaction from the

president. the san mateo bridge as far as commutes affecting your drive. the crash cleared. good news affecting the bridge wbld. we look at the map. it's in the middle there as you cross over the bay. speed sensors in hayward looking smooth. moving toward the dumbarton bridge. the south bay starts the northbound push. nothing unusual about these folks through san jose. it's always slower than we like. southbound 101, faster than we expected. the crash, 101 and grand avenue may have cleared as you head to san francisco out of the city. great stuff. no problems under 45 from highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza. that is good news for people traveling through the area. under 45 minutes. we are on the way to the weekend. >> we can always talk about the weekend, as we get to saturday, it is nice.

washington. >> the biggest news the president is doing that reality show thing again. he's going to announce something today. we are not sure what, but we think the president will say america will announce it recognizes jerusalem as the capitol of israel, but will delay moving the american embassy from tel aviv to jui jerusalem. that move will be controversial. the u.s. state department warns there will be violence after the announcement today. there are reasons to move the embassy to jerusalem. the u.s. embassy. it is, after all, the capital and u.s. congress voted to do it back in the '90s. california's dianne feinstein voted yes. there are reasons not to. it is the capital for the palestinians. moving it would end hopes of a peace deal. no other country has its embassy in jerusalem. democratic congressman al green from texas plans to introduce articles of

morgan hill, one degree above freezing. we are below freezing in gilroy and parts of the north bay. santa rosa, 32 degrees. look at the high temperatures. it's going to warm up quite a bit. look at the high in santa rosa, 68 degrees. seven day forecast at the bottom of the screen in the peninsula now showing we will continue on with more sunshine and also well above normal temperatures. even though we have a cold start, you may still need to grab that scarf and a good day for the boots. later on today, much more comfortable. a strong area of high pressure keeps any chance of rain away in the forecast for the rest of the week. possibly into next week as well. our temperatures running in the 60s, which is above where we should be for this time in december. san francisco, 65 degrees today. you can see in the rest of the forecast, cool mornings and mild afternoons. for the inland areas, more of the same. for the upper 60s, even into the weekend, so those holiday festivities looking good with

more comfortable weather. mike, you are starting out with what's happening on bart. >> we have delays. minor delays. ten minutes matters. here we are looking at a ten-minute dl ten-minute delay at the 24 street mission. ten minutes is critical to getting to work on time. the rest of the agencies, no delays. muni included as an alternate to bart. the speed sensors sho gradual slowing. just under 45 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza. the back upheld steady for 20 minutes. more folks come through walnut creek and the caldecott tunnel. a big segment 101 toward grand avenue is the slowest stretch of the bay. the crash is still in one lane. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. the northbound routes continue to build. back to the crash, south 101,
