long wanted, recognition of its graham i claim to all of the city of jerusalem. u.s. government employees and their families have been ordered for their safety to stay out of palestinian areas, including the nearby city of bethlehem. for israelis, the u.s. is merely recognizing land they already control. >> this is the promised land. this is the city. this is the capital of israel. >> reporter: for palestinians, however, it's a sign the pose process hasn't worked for them. >> we are the land owners of this land. we are the owners of this place. we were here before any other. >> reporter: so what's the issue? both israelis and palestinians claim jerusalem to be their capital. the israelis say the united city is the heart of a jewish state reaching back thousands of years. palestinians say east jerusalem home to islam's third holiest mosque should be the capital of

their future state. this was never an easy dispute. sorting out who controls what in jerusalem was the core of the u.s. sponsored peace process, the subject of decades of talks. talks now thrown into disarray. white house officials say the president today will recognize jerusalem as israel's capital and order the state department to initiate the process of moving the u.s. embassy to the city from tel aviv. u.s. officials say, a location in jerusalem has yet to be chosen and that the embassy move will take years. it's a move opposed by many across the muslim world who wonder why president trump's first foray into middle east diplomacy was to abandon it. turkey, jordan, saudi arabia, china, egypt and a whole host of other countries including just this morning, the vatican city with the poppe pope making a statement, have all expressed

hill and he will face some tough questions about that 2016 meeting with the russians who promise dirt on hillary clinton. nbc news' national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house with more. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. donald trump jr. set for a closed door interview with the house and senate committee today. he is expected to face questions with the house entanglements with russia and that trump tower meeting in 2016. it comes as new information ob taend exclusively by nbc news is shedding more light on what trump jr. was looking for from a russian lawyer at that meeting. the russian lawyer in her own words, 51 pages of written testimony to the senate judiciary committee obtained exclusively by nbc news, the lawyer sell e telling investigators at that june 2016 trump tower meeting, donald trump jr. asked whether she had evidence of donations to the clinton foundation.

she says when she told trump jr. she had no meaningful information about clinton. he seemed to have no interest. the meeting ended there. she told senators she believes the president's son misunderstood the nature of the meeting after trump jr. exchanged e-mails from a music promoter who set the meeting up, promising dirt on clinton as a russian government effort to help donald trump. a lawyer for trump jr. commented that said the younger trump wanted to hear the russians out, if they had information on clinton. it comes amid conflicting reports on whether robert mueller is zeroing in on president trump's personal finances. both reuters and the until "time's" report they subpoenaed deutsche bank before he entered office. >> has mueller crossed a red line, mr. president? >> reporter: last july he told the "new york times" his

on the same runway. controllers quickly called on that regional jet also known as brick yard to stop. as another controller radioed the inbound plane flight 8-80 from mexico. controllers then ordered volaris to wave off and go around. as a precaution the delta regional jet had pulled off the runway hoping to avoid a potential collision. volaris released a statement overnight in part --

we don't know how close the two aircraft came to hitting each other. the faa says it is investigating how this volaris plane mistook these runways which are 8,000 feet apart. >> thank you, keep us posted. also, reaction is pouring into an unprecedented decision by the international olympic committee banning russia from the 2018 winter olympic games. this after investigations into the sochi games, nbc news' keir simmons has more on all of that. keir. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning. this morning, 22 russian athletes are appealing against their ban for doping at the sochi olympics. the kremlin denying state sponsored doping. a russian foreign ministry spokesperson this morning saying

banning russia is part of an attempt to isolate the country. this morning, the kremlin vowing to fight back, already filing an appeal against the ban. the priority is to defend the interests of our athletes. president putin's spokesman said, russia reading, a punch in the stomach one person called it. this olympic coach wiping away tears during the television interview. in the u.s., senator john mccain calling it a welcome step if serving justice to vladimir putin's government for his elaborate doping scheme. >> i think it sends a powerful message to nations that try to defraud the games and says clean sport matters. >> reporter: putin's pride in sochi replaced this morning by an unprecedented punishment after a damming report. the ban coming after a lengthy ioc investigation found the russians guilty of systematic doping at levels never seen before in olympic history.

when south korea hosts the game in february, there will be no russian flags or accreditation for russian officials. the country also fined $15 million. some individual russians can compete under the olympic flag and under strict guidelines. already, several russians have been stripped of their sochi medalssh leaving americans in line to win retroactive medals. meanwhile, the morning, the whistleblower who first alerted the world to the doping is now deeply worried his lawyer said. >> his family is still in russia and every day is anxiety ridden because he's afraid of what the russian government is going to do to them. >> reporter: that whistle-blower was sochi's chief anti-doping official. he is now so frightened, according to his lawyer, he is quote going to be looking over his shoulder he thinks for the rest of his life. >> wow.

♪ here )s a live look in southern a very good morning to you. it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia. i want to take you live to southern california this morning. can you make it out through all that smoke and haze? look at the fire. the center of your screen. this is the newest fire that has been burning since 5:00 this morning, near the getty center in bel air. just above the 405 freeway. knbc reporting at least one home in that area damaged. we saw people out in front of their homes with garden hoses trying to save them. northbound 405 is closed. traffic is a mess in southern california right now. this is one of five wildfires burning there right now. ventura county is another problem they are having problems with. when this broke out, they had to send a lot of crews there.

gusts are upwards of 70 miles an hour fanning all the flames across several different cities. as you know, 150 structures have been destroyed. that number will likely climb. we're told up to 400 homes could be damaged or destroyed. crews will have a better sense of the damage later on today as they do their first aerial flights. but again, the big focus today will be on structure protection. crews deployed all across this region in the air and on the ground trying to beat back flames as those fires continue to burn all across this region. savannah, back to you. >> miguel, thank you. also this morning, "the new york times" has new details about the sexual harassment accusations facing harvey weinstein and how he may have kept them hidden for decades. sheinelle jones is here with more on that. >> good morning. all of this comes amid the #metoo movement. as we just mentioned, "time" recognized the silence breakers at the person of the year. "the new york times" looking at harvey weinstein's relationships

"the new york times" describes a complicity machine inside and outside of his company. and says he used his friendships with major power players from politics, business and the media, to his advantage. "the times" writing, according to 200 interviews, some aided his actions without realizing what he was doing. few understood the scale of his sexual misconduct. almost everyone had incentives to look the other way or reasons to say silent. weinstein faces more than 80 allegations of harassment, some criminal in nature, which he has denied. some in the article include hillary clinton. weinstein had long earned

a terrible ordeal. >> brett archibald. he was sailing around indonesia when he felt overboard in the middle of the ocean. no one saw him fall. he would have to find the courage to survive almost 29 hours of treading water, not knowing if he would ever be rescued. >> i was in a dream. i was tumbling in a washington machine with a bunch of bubbles around me. and my head popped up and i came around. >> reporter: brett archibald was on a dream surfing charge, when he found himself overboard, overnight, in the middle of the indian ocean, watching his boat sail away into the darkness. >> i have goosebumps reliving it. i lifted my head and realized, you're never going to catch a boat. and knew it was over. >> reporter: earlier that evening, brett and his friends had gotten severe food poisoning. leaning over the rail to be sick, brett lost his footing and

it's easy when someone measures it out for you. and garlic. you just mix it together. >> i can ask about ordering the piece of meat. >> you want a brisket. make sure you don't get corned beef. >> just rubbing one side. >> when it cooks, all of the flavors get in. carrots, celery, all these onions. >> my word. >> and it cooks down together. >> what is this parchment paper for. and a couple of bay leaves. i don't know what bay leaves do. a piece of parchment paper. and i'm going to cover it with aluminum foil. i forgot one ingredient. >> what? >> thoomato juice. >> i'll pour that for you. >> three-quarters with good

tomato juice. not any old tomato juice. >> and you cover. and you put it in the oven for four hours. >> that's pretty easy. >> even hoda can do it. >> why do we keep saying that? >> this is what happens. you end up with a brisket like this. and this is the sauce. you reduce the sauce so it cooks together. and all of the vegetables. >> yummy. >> we have one already done. >> you want to cut it across the grain. it's tender. this is what you end up with right here. >> you want a taste? >> i'll just use this fork. >> watch out. savannah is dangerous with a fork. lots of sauce. we need to take this with us. >> so tender. how about the tasters downstairs. >> are they loving it? >> we need to take this with us. >> we don't want to go anywhere without the brisket. >> this is my serving.

>> brisket goes with potato panca pancakes. >> two different kind of potatoes. >> they're usually made with mashed potatoes or grated potatoes. they're more crunchy. and i decided, why not mix them together. you want to add two eggs. and i'm going to add grated onion, of course, we don't have enough onion in the brisket. >> what is that? >> bread crumbs. >> i thought it was cheese. >> lots of salt and pepper. and just mush this all up. >> you do that with your hands? >> clean hands. cook's best tools. you end up with this. and you do some butter and oil in the pan and make pancakes. and butter because of the flavor. oil because of the high burning temperature. you don't want to burn them. >> did you try the potato pancakes? >> they are wonderful.

this is just one of five wildfires burning in southern california. firefighters still have no idea of the total number of structures destroyed. happening now, we're getting information as it comes in from our l.a. sister station. we'll have an update for our midday newscast. we're also posting updates any time on our twitter feed. also at midday, an update to that strike in oakland. city workers are promising to remain off the job. yesterday more than 1,000 service workers went on strike and that effect was felt in many areas, including day care centers, libraries and city hall. and a new survey ranks menlo park's facebook the best place to work. it's based on opportunities, pay benefits and work culture. major new laws take effect.
