ad lib live picture-- san francisco you. as we take a live look outside in san francisco. the bay bridge there lit up, the cars are moving and, yes, it is another cold morning. good morning and thank you for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. that's right, bundle up once again. >> yeah, it's another cold morning, and it's not as cold as yesterday in some spots, but we are still going to have a very chilly morning, but warms up as we go through the day. as we get a look at what you're feeling now as you get ready to step out the door, it's 34 in santa rosa, the coldest spot on the map there, 41 in san jose and 48 in oakland and in san francisco. take a look at these highs today, it's going to be really nice, into the upper 60s, even a few low 70s, so i will let you know how long this kind of weather lasts coming up in a few

minutes. mike, you're tracking a closure near sfo. >> those cold temperatures remember we have road crews that work overnight so they go do your work so it has let impact to our drive. our drive is very light right now, folks over to the peninsula they did close down north downed 101 to 380. that should be just about cleared to the roadway. a little slowing heading away to the airport. 280 over towards sfo moves smoothly. over towards the bay bridge the travel time basically at the minimum, although we sometimes see a little bit lighter on the east shore freeway, i will scan the reports to make sure there's nothing going on to slow you down. back to you. there is something going on, we're covering as breaking news out of the west bank this morning where there have been clashes between israel troops and palestinians, these are live pictures from bethlehem. just moments ago security forces were shooting tear gas and smoke grenades into the crowd. it comes just a day after president trump says the united states will officially recognize jerusalem as the capital of

israel. experts expected pictures like these following the president's announcement. we've been watching this morning as hundreds of people took to the streets in protest. this is video from just about an hour ago, fires being set in the middle of the street. so far we are not getting any reports on or if there are any injuries. we will keep watching this story unfold throughout the morning. back now to other breaking news coverage this morning, those wildfires still raging in southern california. a live look from our sister station knbc this is near ventura. national weather service has issued its strongest possible warning for wildfire conditions today. they're calling it the purple flag warning. they have none done it before in this area. >> experts are predicting near hurricane force winds that could be coming this morning. kari was telling us about this yesterday on "today in the bay" and it really could make for a rapid unpredictable spread of that fire. we want to show you a map of where those four main fires are burning right now around los angeles. authorities issued at least one new evacuation order overnight,

this as thousands of people have already been forced to leave their homes. we checked the numbers with cal fire overnight. >> that's right. the skirball fire near the 405 and the getty center has burned 475 acres, it's just 5% contained. the creek fire near sill mar has burned over 12,000 acres, it as well 5% contained. the rye fire by i-5, 7,000 acres, 10% containment there. the biggest is still that thomas fire burning in ventura county. it is 90,000 acres in size and just 5% contained. nbc bay area's jodie hernandez continues our coverage talking to people living in ojai. >> reporter: we are standing in a neighborhood in ojai a neighborhood that is undersiege, and now a emergency wind alert has been issued. if the wind picks up as expected the people who live in this neighborhood to be in for a lot of trouble. we hiked clear up to the fire

line, quickly deciding to turn around when we realized we may be too close. waves of flames roared over the hillside, making their way toward the town of ojai in ventura county. the warm glow of orange lighting up the sky, but sending chills through those who live nearby. >> oh, i'm scared. yeah. i'm scared. >> reporter: debbie and her brother watched from the front yard of the family home they grew up in. it's all detected out for christmas and they hope they don't lose it. >> i want to still be here tomorrow. >> reporter: in town the stress level is starting to peak, the flames are now visible from the downtown supermarket. >> it's scary, really scary. i don't know, i mean, it's never been this close, i've never seen it this close before ever. >> reporter: as many leave their homes to safer ground, others are doing what they can to protect their property. >> we're watering our roof and everywhere around the property.

>> reporter: debbie and her brother are staying put for now, but perhaps not for long. >> i'll wait until it crests that hill. it's got to come more over that hill and then i will get out of here. >> reporter: and you are looking at those hillsides. you can see why people who live here are so concerned. again, a wind alert has been issued, the wind is expected to pick up here today and people are very concerned. in ojai i'm jodie hernandez, "today in the bay." we want to show you new video this morning showing a daring act of kindness by a man. look at him as he goes into those flames. you are probably wondering what is he doing? he is actually trying to save a wild rabbit. he's reaching for it and able to grab that rabbit there. true act of altruism right there. our coverage of the southern

california wildfires will continue throughout the morning. we are constantly updating our twitter and social media feeds. you can also head to nbcbayarea.com for instant coverage. search continues for two pit bulls in the outer mission neighborhood of san francisco. a woman says both dogs while off leash attacked her chihuahua last month. her dog didn't survive. the woman was also injured, but not seriously. they believe the dog's owner saw that attack and ran off. we could find out what caused that explosion in bernal heights neighborhood of san francisco last week. now, we do know that it was a gas leak that triggered that explosion inside a home. take a look at this video. you can see that blown out window right there. at least we heard -- last we heard that the pg&e was actually looking for the source of that leak. the board of supervisor is holding a special meeting on that explosion today. no one was injured in the explosion, but more than 100 people were evacuated.

global headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street looks set to open higher this morning follow a mixed session yesterday. the dow slipped but a rise in tech stocks led by facebook helped to lift the nasdaq higher. look for economic data today on unemployment. the dow falling 39 points yesterday to 24,140, the nasdaq closing up 14 to 6,776. bitcoin blasts past $14,000. the surge comes about 24 hours after the value of the digital currency topped $12,000 for the first time. bitcoin is known for wild price swings, it dropped 20% just last week alone. gains for the crypto currency have picked up in recent weeks as public interest grows and several exchanges are getting set to launch futures contracts that will track bitcoin's value. >> lyft is offering self driving car trips in boston.

the ride hailing service is conducting a pilot program in the sea port district which is a growing tech hub. cars will have humans behind the wheels for now who can take control if necessary. lyft is also working to deploy self-driving taxis in san francisco and has agreements to develop vehicles for ford and google's wamo. >> welcome to you. 4:41 right now. happening today, the site to save net neutrality goes national and palo alto grannies as old as 86 years old are joining in. the group their called rager grannies will protest at the verizon store this afternoon. the fcc is looking to scrap obama era rules that prevent service providers like verizon and at&t from blocking, slowing down or charging you extra for certain websites. the chairman says he wants to return the internet to a free market. i have been fighting it, but yesterday i had to break down and put on a coat.

welcome to thursday morning. taking a live look outside. the s curve in the north bay in san rafael this morning, another cool start, but what i'm hearing from kari hall is that it's going to be a nice finish to our day, we will look forward to her forecast and the day coming up. quarter to 5:00 right now. why don't you take a look at this, this is a mama mountain lion and her eight-year-old cub -- or eight month old cub. you can't see the cub just yet. this is near bennett valley in sonoma county. normally we warn you about such sightings but right now we're celebrating. you see the cub in the back. the mama cub and that baby -- or the mama and the cub -- >> big baby, yeah. >> -- survived the north bay

wildfires. for weeks no one knew if they were okay because the cameras tracking them burned but recently one of those cameras put back up and look at that. >> she has a collar. >> maybe it's a tracking device. >> yeah. >> maybe it's a house pet. >> she has a collar on. must be someone tracking it. >> that is a big cub. >> we wanted to let you know she's hungry. >> i'm hungry. >> i know they're trying to find a play to stay warm this morning. >> we are all trying to. it's been very chilly. starting out as we take a live look outside in san francisco all clear. even though we have had these very chilly mornings the afternoons have been really pleasant. we can expect more of the same today as the seven-day forecast comes up on the bottom of the screen you will see how warm it's going to the south bay not only today but the next several days. look at where we're beginning right now in livermore it's only 37 degrees, also 37 in morgan hill, also 38 in palo alto.

these are the spots where we're seeing a lot of 30s in the north bay right now, just a couple of degrees above freezing, but then as we go into the day it's going to make it into the upper 60s and low 70s, and morgan hill, east san jose 70 degrees, we are also going to see a few of those upper 60s and 70s for the east bay. hayward today expect a high of 65 degrees and 65 in san mateo. daley city at 64 today and also 64 on the embarcadero. north bay looking at highs up to 70 in napa this afternoon. santa rosa 69 degrees. in san jose you're looking out the window and it's definitely another cool one, grab the gloves and a coat. we have to dress in layers because as the day goes along it warms up so then you need something like light long sleeves and pants for the afternoon hours. you need something where you can take things off and stay comfortable. as we look at what's happening here, it's kind of a very

unusual pattern, we have this very stubborn area of high pressure that is not going to move over the next few days and normally we see this line of clouds kind of extending horizontally, but now we are not going to see it moving into our area, bringing us any rain for at least the next several days. so we are saying the same story over and over again. it looks all dry. temperatures well above normal reaching into the upper 60s through next week. let's head over to mike. you have a crash in pleasanton. >> i have one crash in pleasanton that's the only thing i'm concerned with at this present moment. looking at 84, the cut through from 58 to 0680. the report of the crash says eastbound, going to the top towards stanley, but the slowing shows us it's slowing westbound toward vineyard. there may be activity a little farther up on the roadway. this is coming through basically a major city street. be prepared for some activity. folks that are joining on at val

seed das heading towards 680 you are doing just fine. no big alerts from chp or the pleasanton pd. over toward the bay bridge a smooth easy drive, a nice flow down the east shore freeway with no major delays. no delays for the rails, either. caltrain on the peninsula all the way up through ace train and capital corridor, bart is on time as well. we will take a quick look at oakland to show you 880. company southbound but no delays, that's great for the nimi nimitz. it's 4:49. the verdict shocked not only the bay area but the country and this morning we're getting an insight as to why jurors came to their conclusion in the kate steinle murder case. >> we are now hearing from an alternate juror in the case. >> i want to explain to people why the jury did as they did and defend them. i think they did the right thing. >> now, phil van stockum is a mechanical engineer. he says he agrees with the jury that there was not enough evidence to convict josé ines garcia zarate of murder.

he says there was reasonable doubt. >> the role of a juror is to enact the justice that is enshrined in the law of the united states and that is what the jurors did in this case and they could not have done otherwise lawfully and i think we should commend them. >> he adds there was a tremendous toll on jurors involved. they felt the national spotlight was on them, but he says they kept their cool and did not get crazy about it and they just did their job diligently. it is 4:50 right now. "today in the bay" is tracking new california laws for 2018. if you plan on taking a trip on a greyhound bus or any other commercial bus in the new year you will need to buckle up. the law is the first of its kind in the nation inspired by this greyhound bus crash in san jose where two people were killed. happened last year on highway 101 at the highway 85 interchange. a lack of reflective warning markers on the roadway was blamed. under the new law drivers and

passengers can be fined $20 for the first offense, $50 for repeat offenders for not wearing a seat belt. bart gets back to talking tunnels today as in which type of tunnel bart trains will run through under downtown san jose. the question is whether to dig a single tunnel with tracks stacked on top of each other, the other option is two tunnels side-by-side. that project will cost more. as for the single tunnel, bta is reportedly saying it needs at least three months to design plans for it. bart's board of directors will meet later this morning. bob redell is digging deeper into the story and will bring us a live report in the next hour. a controversial gun bill making its way through congress. house of representatives just passed legislation that would make it easier to legally carry concealed weapons across state lines. it allows gun owners with a state issued concealed carry permit to carry a gun in any other state that allows concealed weapons. republicans argued gun owners with permits should be allowed

to do this without being hamstrung by conflicting rules. democrats criticized the bill saying it would infringe on the rights of states who have different restrictions. it is the first it gun-related vote since the shooting massacres in las vegas and sutherland springs, texas. coming up on "today in the bay," a popular bay area past time could be banned next year, the reason an loney fishing may be put on hold. happening now, general electric planning to put 12,000 jobs from its power division. the company says it's responding to dwindling demand for possible fuel power plants. the cuts could save ge a billion dollars in 2018. shares for ge not surprisingly are up this morning. plus new songs from jimmy hendricks will be released soon, they were recorded between 1968 and 1970, the new album will include ten new songs that have never been released. hendricks died in 1970 at the young age of 27.

against three democrats. chappening today the transi agency will discuss how to come back the issue. today's meeting is at 10:00 at caltrain offices in san carlos. we will find out if abalone fishing will be allowed next year. mercury news reports the california department of fish and wildfire survey shows 37% of all abalone found were dead, many found alive were starving. an explosion of sea you are chins is ripping out their food supply. fish and game commission will make the final decision on whether abalone fishing will be allowed. this is a multi-million dollar industry. many people go abalone fishing here in the bay area. 76 years ago today america changed forever. >> on december 7th, 1941 the japanese attacked pearl harbor in hawaii. it was an attacked that

today may be the biggest battle yet in the fire fight there. near hurricane force winds could escalate the already out of control flames. we're going to bring you live team coverage throughout the morning. first want to get the chance to say good morning to you. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. you can see the intensity in that fire just looking at those videos right there. >> today those winds are expected to increase. >> that's going to be the problem as we go through the day and reaching extremely critical fire conditions in southern california. here we are going to have some breezy winds picking up in the hills and our high temperatures warming up as well. this is well above normal, we should only be in the upper 50s, we will be hitting the low 70s today in the south bay, upper 60s for the east bay and the peninsula up to 68 degrees in palo alto, san francisco also fairly warm up to 65 in the outer sunset and 70 today in napa. so more on this and also an update on the wind forecast for southern california coming up. mike has an
