i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has the day off. >> i'm laura garcia. >> we are going to have another morning with 30s and low 40s as you get ready to head out the door, once again, a spare the air alert day. that continues through monday. we will have moderate air quality into the wildfires. you have probably seen the orange/pink hugh hews to the skies. looking at 33 degrees in fairfield and 40 in oakland. san francisco, upper 40s. by noon, milder. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend, coming up. mike is giving us better news out of san francisco. >> out of san francisco, the lower deck of the bay bridge, no slowing. no problem at the treasure island off ramp, looking at the

bay. sensors are a great drive. for those who joined earlier, a disabled big rig. that's good stuff. we are tracking a crash at the fifth avenue off ramp that may affect one of the slow lanes there. northbound 880 at 23rd, reports of a crash that left a vehicle in the slowing here. the live look they show you, light, light traffic moving through the area. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 5:01, continuing coverage out of southern california. live pictures from the thomas fire engulfing parts of ventura county. look at the smoke overhead. so far, 5% contained. the thomas fire, 1 of 6 fires burning across southern california. you can see all the areas. two, in fact, sparked up in riverside in san diego county. so far, there's no end in sight. for all the exhausted firefighter that is have to cover the area.

more than 140,000 acres are charred. nearly 200,000 people are evacuated. more than 500 structures are gone. gina kim join us us live from ventura county. jinah, it's a rough couple days for people and firefighters there. >> reporter: absolutely, laura. unfortunately, it's going to continue. we are expecting gusts up to 55 miles an hour today. that is certainly an improvement from yesterday when we were getting hurricane strength winds, but officials say we will remain in dangerous territory as we head into the weekend. >> we are essentially getting surrounded by fire. >> reporter: the devastating wildfire that is have been largely confined to the los angeles area, exploded into san diego county thursday. within a few hours, the lilac fire ate through entire neighborhoods. >> those not currently impacted

by the fire need to prepare as if they will be impacted. this could make it through oceanside to the coast. >> reporter: in what's a familiar sight, rez dentds were told you have to leave now. >> we begged and pleaded to let us through. they said you have ten minutes, go. >> reporter: north of san diego county, another fire erupted, sending more families packing, scorching more tinder, dry brush. there are six fires burning throughout southern california with the largest the thomas fire in ventura county. late thursday, officials said nearly 500 homes and buildings had been damaged or destroyed there, more than triple the number from the day before. >> we want to urge everybody in the area to follow ready, set, go for evacuations. i urge everybody to be set. have your stuff ready to go. >> reporter: as the fire fight

continues into the weekend, some 23,000 homes are still in the fire's path. five people were hurt in that san diego fire, including two firefighters, laura. >> it is so hard to see. i mean, southern california on fire. jinah kim, thank you so much. not just homes, but many people are concerned about livestock. horses stuck in the fire lines. this is new video we have horses near the flames in san diego. in another part of san diego valley, flames roared through horse barns. at least 25 thoroughbreds were reportedly killed there. >> our coverage continues throughout the morning including how it will impact the air quality here in the bay area. we'll talk about that at 5:30. new this morning, flames erupt inside a garage in the livermore home sending

firefighters rushing to that scene. bob redell is live off ryan way with a look at the aftermath. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you, scott. you can see the damage here in livermore. it was severely damaged. concerning how large the flames were, it's commendable the firefighters were able to keep it contained to the garage. take a look at the tv screen, you can see what i'm talking about. this was a very active fire. the battalion chief says it started around 1:00 with an explosion on the outside of the garage. some sort of tank on the left exterior of the house. they believe the homeowner works on air-conditioning equipment in the garage. the homeowner was able to get him and his family out okay. staying with family nearby according to the fire department. they kept the fire contained, mostly to the garage. one room inside the home was damaged. the entire structure was saved.

the radiant heat caused damage to the home next door. no one hurt in the fire. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. we have new video this morning. a deadly police shooting in san francisco's bay view neighborhood is raising concerns and anger from the community. the city is disturbing. body camera footage was released capturing the moment he shot and killed a 42-year-old through his patrol car window last week. we brought it to you live on the midday newscast. o'neil was shot after a chase. he was suspected after carjacking a california lottery van. police say he was unarmed. they also say the officer who fired the gun just graduated from the academy. it was his fourth day on duty. his father watched the video and told the chief, he misses his son.

>> we are sick and tired of being silenced. our people are dying. you have racist, rogue cops on your police force. it has to stop! >> chief bill scott would not draw conclusions about the shooting. he called it a tragic incident that is still under investigation. 5:07. disturbing investigation into a santa clara county corrections office. he sent elicit pictures and videos of himself to a 17-year-old girl. in turn, he asked her to send him inappropriate content according to investigators. investigators say the two met at a youth program. this is the latest in a series of mishaps at the county jail system. sheriff laurie smith sent out a statement saying no one should have to be a victim of sexual coercion. there's no tolerance in the

sheriff's office for this type of conduct. another tough day in oakland. still no contract deal between city workers and leaders. that means thousands of workers will continue that strike today. it's the fourth day. nonemergency workers are pushing for higher wages and improved working conditions. the city cannot spend money it doesn't have. workers say the city lacks funds because of tax breaks to developers. help may be coming to taxi drivers in palo alto. they say the city may loosen rules for taxi cab fares and allow drivers to charge less when demand is low. uber and lyft already do this. the city council will consider those changes next week. san jose and santa clara have similar changes. smart train is asking for federal help following last winter's storm. they are asking for $150,000 in

emergency funding. they need to repair e lekry cal repair damage and track problems. right now, 5:09 on your friday morning. we wake up and walk out the door to another cold morning. another look at the cameras and current temperatures. 41 degrees in the peninsula and the south bay and tri-valley at 36 degrees. 34 in the north bay. we are going to drop a few more degrees. freezing temperatures likely in some of the valleys. as we go through the day in san jose, 46 degrees at 8:00. noontime temperature, 62, really comfortable. sunshine, 67 degrees in the middle of the afternoon. cooling down quickly, we drop to 56 by 8:00 this evening. i'll have a look at today's temperature trend for fremont. mike has an update on the crash in san francisco. >> eastbound is clear from the exit. the one westbound, look at the sensors, still green. off the bridge from the oakland side, that is at fifth.

it's 5:13 now. another cold start and, as we take a live look outside in fremont, already busy. the temperatures will start out in the 40s and then quickly warm again into the mid to upper 60s by this afternoon. it's going to be another nice day and a nice weekend, but we are going to have more dry weather. it's kind of unfortunate, especially for this time of year. what's ahead in the forecast in

five minutes. drive times are looking great, kari. looking to the east bay, the tri-valley as well for 680. getting to the north bay, no delays. we are tracking the colder temperatures. i have an update, hopefully for the crash in san francisco. >> thank you so much, kari and mike. it is 5:14. the fires grow in southern california, officials sent out a massive alert, the largest since the text alert system started in 2012. millions of people heard that sound in southern california. but, the system was not used during the north bay wildfires. now, lawmakers are working to make sure that never happens again. state senator mike mcgwire is posing a massive alert system. a family that lost their home and animals feel it's the right

"today in the bay's", pete suratos, live at the golden gate bridge with a closer look at the research just released. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott, that new release by the metropolitan transportation commission. it's at least for the bay area. it shows the number of traffic related deaths have gone up since 2010. they are saying the reason for that is twofold. there are more cars on the road, also the economic growth in the

past six years. i was going to show you the map from the metropolitan transportation commission. the problems when it comes to traffic related deaths, it's green. bicyclists, blue and motorists are orange. you can see the north bay counties have the highest fatality rates. take a closer look at the san francisco area map where san francisco county is. they have the lowest fatality rate in the bay area. not as many deaths populating the area. it's one of the most dangerous regions, per mile driven. that's why you see a bigger number of bicycles for a majority of deaths on the map. the six year period marks the first sustained growth since the 1970s, which also happen to be a period of economic growth in the bay area. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. >> a beautiful shot behind him there.

than yesterday when you were talking out the door. napa 12 degrees colder. other spots are a little bit warmer. so, we are getting a wide range in temperatures starting out and we will close that gap and have all the bay area warming up into the 60s and low 70s. up to 65 in oakland and san francisco and san jose, a high of 69 degrees. as we go through that school day forecast in san jose, 44 degrees, walking to school or that drop offline, you'll have the heater on. as the kids head out for recess, it will feel better out there. still may need a light jacket and walking home from school, it's going to be in the lower 60s. it's going to be really nice. we have this southern area of high pressure that's kept it dry and has not changed our weather pattern well above normal temperatures. as we go through wednesday of next week, it's sitting there. so, there's no rain as we go into the next several days.

we will talk about the weekend forecast. that's coming up in 20 minutes. as of right now, you can tweet me. let me know what you are doing this weekend. you may see it featured in 20 minutes. we are looking at san francisco's seven day forecast. temperatures staying in the low to mid-60s over several days. inland areas upper 60s to 70 degrees by the end of the weekend. make, it's a light commute. >> it is. we can say hey, great temperatures, love those. love the speeds. they will not last all day. take them while they last. we are looking toward the bay bridge, toward san francisco, we see slowing coming down the skyway heading toward fifth where there is a crash blocking one of those lanes. tow truck arriving on scene. that's why we see slowing again into san francisco. over here, southbound 680 does not show slowing through sunol. the tri-valley, a smooth drive.

as israel's capital. palestinians view jerusalem as their rightful capital city. vice president pence is set to visit soon. they say pence is not welcome in the occupied territory. they say pence fully intends to meet with palestinian leaders. safety is a top concern a month ahead of the olympics. the trump administration says the u.s. looks forward. yesterday, there was question to weather the u.s. would pull out. they called protection of americans in the area an open question. during a press briefing, sarah huckabee sanders says no official decision has been made as to whether to send the american olympians. they later walked back that comment. the u.s. olympic committee says there's not been discussions about americans skipping the games. nbc will be the home for the

2018 games. new this morning, hope solo says she's running for president of the u.s. soccer federation. she announced it on thursday. the election is in february. she is a nice person to enter the race saying her platform is player development, equality and respectability. flames in southern california, we continue to follow that. a total of six major fires. we'll tell you about the dangers the firefighters are facing this morning. some of that smoke from the southern california wildfires is contributing to the poor air quality. i'll show you how many spare the air days we have ahead of us this weekend.

we are in the upper 50s. take a look at all these numbers in the upper 60s and low 70s for today. santa cruz, 72 degrees. make it a beach weekend. we are going to have more dry weather and, as we go into the weekend in san francisco, some 60s. still some cool mornings in the forecast. still the valleys dropping to the upper 30s. as we go into next week, there's no rain in the forecast. we'll talk about that and focus just on the weekend coming up in seven minutes. mike is talking about the east bay, seeing activity. >> a lot of activity. first of all, the metering lights turned on. there's the back up. look at the maps and see right there, looking here, a smooth drive. there may be a new crash at san pablo. chp is heading out there to check it out. we have one lane blocked. the off ramp off the bay bridge, westbound. the rest of the bay, aside from the portions of the east bay, looking at a smooth drive. back to you. >> thank you, mike.

developing news out of southern california, strong winds continue to cause concern. as you can see, just that roaring inferno in southern california. this is the thomas fire, it is 1 of 6. it is just astonishing to watch, particularly at night. let's take you to the ground. helmet camera footage showing the danger firefighters are facing. same fire burning in ventura county. you can see the flames burning there. >> the thomas fire is 1 of 6 fires burning at this hour from san diego keocounty to ventura county. this map is highlighting all the areas on fire. they have all burned more than 140,000 acres so far. nearly 200,000 people, imagine that number, they have evacuated. 500 structures destroyed, many homes. meantime, here at home, the smoke from the southern california fires is making its way to the bay area. this is a live look from the san

bruno mountain camera overlooking san francisco. >> kris sanchez is live in san jose with all that unhealthy air you will be seeing this weekend. a lot of people's outdoor plans could be impacted. >> reporter: right. as you mentioned, some of that southern california wildfire is walking its way up into the bay area. the current weather pattern is going to trap and get close to the ground. once the sun comes up, i'm not sure laura is going to be poettic about the view anymore. it is going to be hazy later this afternoon. that is the reason why the air quality district called three spare the air days for the entire bay area. you can see on their map that yellow is moderate and that is less than good. that is why the spare the air days called for today, tomorrow and sunday. it will be illegal to burn wood, fake fire logs indoor or outdoors and that is, again, from midnight to sunday. if you are busted, by the way, the first time fine is $100.

looking into how a patient from an east bay hospital got out and went on a dangerous escape. it happened last night. investigators say the man seen in this video was under a 72-hour psychiatric hold at john george hospital. after escaping, he tried to carjack two people, two cars at a nearby fairmont hospital assaulting a teen and elderly man in the process. he then ran across highway 580. he suffered minor injuries. that's when officers arrested him. police have not identified the patient. the coroner examining a woman's body found floating naked in a canal. a bicyclist spotted that body yesterday morning. that's all detectives know. the coroner should be able to determine, though, whether foul play was involved. security is tightening after an unusual takeover robbery.

a man backed up to the back door of the lane bryant. he called the store phone saying he was the u.p.s. delivery driver and their packages arrived. workers then opened up. the suspect threatened them with a gun and locked them inside a bathroom, took cash from the register. listen to police describe how the workers stayed out of the way. >> he pushed the filing cabinet against the door. told them not to come out for ten minutes, he was sorry, have a merry christmas and he left. >> this wasn't the only holiday heist. police are looking for seven suspects who smashed the front door of the sunglasses hut, grabbed items from the shelves and got away in less than a minute. we are learning tubling rou details about a gas leak. it's a pipeline that is no longer a part of the system. they have a system that measures the line pressure and flow.

it wasn't triggers in this case. it hopes to have more answers in a few weeks. 5:36. it's a done deal. abaloan fishing the banned next year. the fishing game commission voted to shut down the recreational fishing. the majority of them found were dead or starving. an explosion of see urchined is wiping out the food supply. it will take years for the population to recover. it's a big hobby for many in the area. the ban is set to have a big impact. bart is on track to rely almost entirely on renewable energy in the coming years. examiner reports thursday they approved plans for a wind and solar energy agreement. they tell the paper, 90% of the energy bart uses will be from renewable sources by 2021. we are looking over here toward the bay's commute.

an easy drive as far as the speed sensors go. the ones i'm showing for the south bay. the east bay is seeing all the activity and we see the speeds other than the green zone. an update from chp as they arrive. the crash is not at san pablo, it's at central, toward the merge. it's moved out of lanes the last couple minutes. there's slowing, but it should recover. across the richmond to san rafael bridge, we have a crash out of the roadway. we are looking at the approach from the richmond side and the toll plaza. you can see how light the traffic flow is. the crash will not present a problem for folks and should be removed quickly as folks get to san rafael. >> guess what today is? >> friday? >> yes, it is. we are ready for the weekend, kari. >> yes, we are. it is going to be a great weekend for the holiday lights and festivities.

tomorrow's forecast, 63 degrees for the coast and inland areas. more of the same on sunday. no change in the forecast, even as we go into next week. we will continue on with dry weather. maybe you are going to the napa lighted art festival. this is happening tomorrow, downtown napa, starts in the evening. look how chilly it gets as the night goes along. lower 40s by the time a lot of people are heading home. the lighted boat parade in berkeley, that will be tomorrow. during the evening, we are at 57 degrees. the temperatures cool off a little more slowly. with the fireworks, it is a nice evening out there. you may wrap up the weekend ice skating in union square in san francisco, in the upper 60s at 4:00 on sunday and some mid-50s for the evening. that goes on until 11:30 in the evening. going to russian river valley, it is warmer there.

low 70s on sunday and still sunshine in that forecast, going hiking in yosemite. low 50s for the weekend. still no rain or snow in the forecast there. so, we shouldn't have problems getting to yosemite and we will see dry weather here as we look at the seven day forecast. we will take a closer look at this and break down today's temperature trend. that's coming up in three minutes. >> sounds good, kari. weighing the impact of california's devastating wildfire. this morning, we take a close look at how much the wildfires are going to cost cal fire in resources. reporting illegal fireworks in san jose. the process you have to go through.

happy friday. it's 5:43. another cold morning. let's take a live look outside at christmas in the park in downtown san jose. this will be a great event to check out coming from evergreen. we are going to be in the low 40s at 7:00. bundle up. then, as we go through the day, we are going to go well above our normal high temperature, again, reaching the mid-60s. we will continue on with dry weather. we'll talk about that and when we may see some rain. that's coming up in five minutes. here are the travel times. look at the top of your screen. we are improving the earlier crash from the east shore freeway around central avenue.

>> thank you, mike. this just in, the u.s. economy added 228,000 jobs in november. unemployment rates steady, 4.1%. labor department released those numbers at 5:30. some say this is the first accurate picture of the economy in months because september and october reports were inaccurate because of the hurricanes and that impacted hiring. >> we don't know how much wildfires burning in southern california will cost our state, but we know how much the fires cost cal fire already this year. cal fire says it spent nearly $495 million between july 1st and yesterday. that's about $70 million over its emergency fund budget. cal fire is authorized to go over budget and can dip into the state's reserves. officials say they anticipate doing that this season after both the north bay wildfires and these new ones. >> this is the worst season i have had. the longest, the most

devastating, most loss of life, most loss of structures. the rate of spread of these fires is extreme. >> emergency service officials say the recovery effort could take years. >> new this morning, san jose city leaders will ask more of you if you call to report illegal fireworks. the process will require people to provide evidence neighbors are using fireworks. there was public outcry after people said they were wrongly cited for setting off fireworks. the paper says the fire department tossed out 45 citation that is were issued without video or photographic evidence. back in july, the consumer unit helped people who said they were wrongly issued fines. they say nobody visited them to verify the allegations. you can watch that story on our website. a number of silicon valley and tech companies will not just be hiring catering services, but models for the holiday parties.

bloomberg reports model agencies say they are sending good-looking young women to a record number of tech parties. they pay $200 per hour per model. yes, this is happening in 2017. their job is chat up the party goers. some agencies denied service to tech companies who request women to show cleavage and wear short shorts. a last minute agreement thwarted a government shutdown. it came ahead of a midnight deadline. they voted to fund the government two more weeks. another shutdown could loom before the holidays. it took place after leaders met with president trump at the white house to negotiate year end funding priorities. they include funding for the military, opioid crisis and the expired children's health program. happening today, president trump is set to speak in pensacola, florida. it is raising eyebrows.

they share a media market with mobile, alabama. the role the visit will play in alabama. president trump has fully endorsed moore. nine women, including some who were teenagers at the time, accused moore of sexual misconduct. he denies it and is bouncing back in the polls. democrats are holding out hope roy moore will lose. >> i am hopeful the people of alabama will make the right decision on december 12th. >> voters will head to the polls next tuesday. new this morning, one solano city has it has fastest growing rent in the area. fairfield has seen a 7% increase compared to this time last year according to new numbers from the blog, rent cafe. the report says sunnyvale rents jumped 5%, vallejo third at 5%. santa rosa fourth with 4.5%.

hanukkah. there was a time donald trump said an early celebration of hanukkah was bad. you can follow me to share your opinion. happening now, the fbi is looking for a serial bank robber in northern california. fbi agents are working with the county sheriff's office to find the so-called khaki bandit. investigators say he's robbed 13 california banks in the past four years, but they haven't been able to catch him. the latest was tuesday afternoon at yosemite bank in groveland. he typically uses a black handguns and targets rural banks. people who work near the bank say they are not surprised. >> a small town like this, we are an easy target and law enforcement is not always here. >> investigators say the robber demands money then leaves after he gets it. no word on how much money has been stolen over the years. investigators are offering up to $20,000 reward for information leading to the khaki bandit
