good saturday morning to you. it is 7:00. we're taking a live look at the beautiful sky over the south bay. pink and purple, cotton candy clouds. >> i like that description. >> yeah. beautiful. good morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at our microclimate forecast, and it is chilly out there. >> it is. it's been kind of cold all week long. it lets you know we're officially in december, right? >> yeah, i mean, makes sense. >> now, are we officially -- how many days -- i haven't been counting down to christmas, have
7:01 am
you? >> no. but quickly, 16 days. >> there we go. 16 days until christmas and the morning temperatures are definitely going to play in our favor. however, we are expecting a slightly warmer afternoon. if you notice on the map right now, look at the difference in our microclimate. the north bay waking up to 30s. that's why when you see those blue hues, 31 in santa rosa right now. oakland 40 and if you notice down near hayward, all the way down to the south bay in san jose, waking up to 41 but up along the peninsula, in the 30s for mountain view, 35 degrees. palo alto, 35, and a little bit warmer for the coast. that water kind of helps us keep warm in the half moon bay area, 53 degrees. 49 degrees for san francisco and our temperature trend does kind of go into the upper 50s and 60s by late afternoon but we are dealing with haze into the afternoon hours but overall a lot of sunshine so that haze that you see in the air will be the reason why we are under a spare the air alert, a another reason why we are factoring that into our forecast is also because of that high pressure
7:02 am
that's keeping us nice and dry so i will have a closer look at exactly what you can expect sunday. the reason for that spare the air alert and we'll also have a breakdown of how southern california's looking in terms of those winds and the wildfires coming up in about 15 minutes. this morning, 29 people are recovering following a bus crash last night on highway 101 in san francisco. this morning, we've learned that the bus driver did pass a field sobriety test. it happened around 8:00 last night on 101 south near cesar chavez. this is just off hospital curve. the private charter bus was headed to a party on the peninsula when it crashed into the center median and overturned. everyone on board was injured. out of the 29 injured, 23 were taken to the hospital. 22 people are listed in fair condition and one passenger suffered serious injuries. we have video from a man who pulled over after witnessing the crash. you can see lots of confusion with passengers. we get a look at the driver there.
7:03 am
eye-witnesses gave investigators a good idea of what they saw happen. >> some unknown reason, that bus started to lose control, struck the center divide and then came back across the lane, ended up on its side, blocking the far right lane. >> 101 of course is reopened this morning. the chp is still working to determine why the bus driver lost control. be sure to stay with us for continuing coverage on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. also, our facebook and twitter feeds are great resources for the latest news updates. follow us @nbc bay area. now to the fires raging in southern california. crews say they are making some progress but the threat is far from over. we have the view from our nbc chopper over ventura county where the largest of the fires continues to burn. at last check, the thomas fire has burned more than 140,000 acres and is only 10% contained.
7:04 am
476 structures are destroyed. and more than 100 others are damaged. thousands of people are evacuated from their homes while thousands of firefighters are on the front lines. the weather hasn't been giving crews much of a break. >> when a tornado hits the midwest, there's no stopping it. when a hurricane hits the east coast, there's no stopping it. when the santa ana winds come in, there's no stopping them. >> and new this morning, authorities have confirmed the first death linked to the wildfires. a 70-year-old woman was killed in a car crash while she was trying to escape the thomas fire. back here in the bay area, it is summer in december, according to some in the north bay. the novato fire district says it's going back into fire mode because of the dry, summer-like fire conditions. the recent fires in the north bay and the flames currently whipping across southern california are making firefighters extra cautious. fire season officially ended last month in november, but crews in the novato have added

wildland fire gear to their everyday trucks. they say they are prepared for the worst. >> this year, because of the winds, because the predicted weather that's going to be happening over the next couple weeks, humidity's dropped significantly, especially during the day. >> the novato fire district will keep wildfire season open until rain improves the conditions. a disturbing crime in san francisco. and police need your help catching this man. they say he sexually assaulted an elderly woman at an assisted living facility. it happened two sundays ago at 12:30 in the afternoon near bush and laguna streets. the suspect allegedly went into the woman's room and was last seen leaving through the back of the building. he is described as 20 to 30 years old, 6 feet tall, weighing 170 pounds. new details now about the patient who escaped from an east bay psychiatric hospital. this is dorian muddlder. he ran away about 6:30 thursday
7:06 am
night. we've learned he tried to escape again yesterday. investigators say he escaped through an unlocked gate at the psych hospital. he ran to the fairmont hospital and broke into a car that happened to have a teenage boy inside. he drove off with that boy, but then crashed in the parking lot. mulder tried to carjack another person by biting him in the arm, but he couldn't get that car to start. so, he ran on the highway 580 where he was hit by a car. amazingly, mulder got up and got again. deputies brought out a thermal imageer, which picks up body heat as you can see here, they found him hiding in the bushes along the highway and arrested him. a new problem now for the embattled santa clara county sheriff's office. four deputies have been fired. they are accused of associating with a known felon. nbc bay area obtained this picture exclusively. we covered the faces of everyone except for one. it's the face of armand.

"today in the bay's" ian cole looks into it. >> reporter: tech companies have a long history of throwing lavish parties, but a new report from bloomberg suggests some bay area companies are hiring models from agencies like create to act as guests of holiday parties. they have to sign a nondisclosure agreement and they're paid up to $200 an hour just to be there. this is the ceo of models in tech out of l.a., a company where you hand select who you'd like to hire. she's been approached with unusual requests. >> and they required models to wear pink panther leather suit. so yeah, we have to deny this request, because -- and i politely explained that this is not what we do. >> reporter: she says her agency focuses on trade shows like ces

pollution in the region was protecting us yesterday from the wildfire smoke that was aloft and over the region. >> air quality management says declaring three spare the air days at one time is unprecedented. officials say the inversion layer could last days, even well into next week. and if i sound like a weather expert, i am not, but she is here. vianey arana with a look at our weekend forecast. it's kind of nice that mother nature works in our faverd faor. >> especially when you see the santa ana winds that are expected to kick up tonight in southern california. they've got a lot of rough days ahead in terms of that weather pattern, but for us here, yes, a spare the air alert is in place but it's tough to stay inside when you look at some of these temperatures. south bay a little chilly at 41 degrees, the peninsula, 39. tri-valley at a very cold 35 degrees, and in san francisco, a little bit warmer at about 48 degrees. the north bay, 31. look at that beautiful sunrise over there.
7:19 am
east bay, 40 degrees. now, we are expecting overall clear skies in terms of the weather conditions. we may see a couple of high clouds here and there but let's talk about that fog and 24-hour temperature change. fog, nonexistent. the reason is that high pressure. we are seeing slightly cooler temperatures in most areas. but look at san francisco, about four degrees warmer, half moon bay, 23 degrees warmer at this hour than we were yesterday. now that high pressure that is sitting over the bay area is what has helped us be nice and dry and of course nice and mild and even slightly warmer into the afternoon. that's going to help warm our temperatures up to a little bit above average, and palo alto, a high of about 65. san jose, 68 degrees and look at santa cruz. santa cruz might even jump into the 70s at about 74 degrees. half moon bay, 63. santa rosa, 67. so if it feels a little bit warmer today, that's because it is going to be warmer. now, let's look at that doppler radar. we were talking about that ridge of high pressure that's sitting over the bay area and that's
7:20 am
what's been keeping us kind of nice and dry but of course because of that high pressure that sits over the bay area, much like when we had our wildfires here in the north bay, that was trapping all of that poor air quality and pollutants in the air, that's what that's doing, sitting over the bay area. that is expected to remain in the forecast, not just through the weekend but also may be the next several seven, possibly ten days. that's going to stay over the bay area and that's why that spare the air alert at least will remain in place until tomorrow. the north bay remains unhealthy. east bay, peninsula, and the south bay does remain moderate so it is good to limit your outdoor exposure. we are expecting to see a couple of changes in terms of the wind speeds for southern california. so i wanted to take you kind of through that timeline. so, ironically, the wind and also the wildfires coming from the southern california area is now what's making, of course, the changes in our air quality. but the potential wind gusts in southern california, look at the santa ana winds, expect to kick up again tonight at about 11:30.

santa paula, 23 miles per hour, simi valley, 23. ventura, 23. and it doesn't look to get any better into the overnight, early morning hours. unfortunately, it doesn't look like they'll catch a break, at least until monday, but if you notice that the weather pattern, if i kind of fast forward you through this timeline, the winds pick right back up again on tuesday. so we have to closely monitor that situation in southern california and unfortunately, it looks like they're in for a rough couple of hours. over the next seven days, a quick check of what you can expect. we're keeping those dry conditions for the next several days. i was looking at the long-range models. it looks like we're not really tracking any rain, at least not possibly for the next seven to ten days, so we've got a good drying spell that will stick around through next weekend, but that spare the air alert is in place through tomorrow. kira, i'll send it back to you. >> good to know, thanks. still ahead on "today in the bay," setting up new homes for people without a home. how one bay area woman is using her skills to help others. it's a story that will make you "bay area proud."
