cool temperatures. >> dipping below freezing in the north bay with low 30s in santa rosa as well as fairfield and as we look at livermore, one degree above freezing. oakland, 38 degrees as you head out the door. we go from very cold temperatures no near record highs today into the upper 60s and low 70s. san francisco will see a high of 66 degrees. san jose, 71. that's three degrees below a record high. we will be tracking more records as we go into the next several days. i'll have more on that. mike was saying it's already crowded at the bay bridge. >> it is. we don't have all the cash lanes open. folks are filling in the last cash lane on the left. on the right approach, things are smooth. remember, cash lane 14 will remain closed because of a crash. looking at the parking lot, a lot of activity. no lanes were ever blocked.

avenue, not far from where we are standing now. within the last hour, police officers were searching that area with their guns drawn. it appears it's where homeless people live. we know police did take one man into custody. what is not clear, if he is related to the recent arson fires in the area. the fires started around 9:30 this past saturday night. san jose firefighters put out three small fires alongside southbound 680. that is near hofstetter. one fire came close to the homes near the interstate. investigators are con sincvince fires were intentionally set. a suspect was seen on the bicycle at the crossing over 680. again, within the past hour, police did take someone into custody. not clear if that person is

calling for the allegation of miscondu misconduct by the president. he denied the allegations. it airs after the "today" show coming up at 9:00. 5:06. an nbc bay area exclusive. we are hearing directly from a juror in the kate steinle murder case. the juror, who asked us not to reveal his identity says politics played no part in the jury's decision. 12 days ago, the defendant was cleared of the most serious charges in the deadly pier 14 shooting. the shooting sparked a political debate about immigration. the aspect was not part of the deliberations. this juror also says he understands why so many people are upset about the verdict. >> if i was not a juror on this trial, probably thinking the same way, why did you let him go free? but, again, the reason was they could not prove it to us. his intention to kill her and

through all the evidence, i really think it was just a freak accident. >> the jurors say no mention was made of zarate's prior record or sanctuary city policies. that's the way the judge wants it. to get more insight, you can find the story on www.nbcbayarea.com. developing in southern california this morning, take a look at this. where the wildfires are continuing to burn. sunday, officials issued new mandatory evacuations. crews say they are bracing for more extreme weather in the week ahead. there's a lot of dry brush. we checked with cal fire. there are five major fires. we have the map and at least 250,000 acres have burned. at least 9,000 firefighters are working those flames. veteran firefighters say strong, constantly changing winds made this fire hard to predict. >> flames and heat put off from

grass. i would normally look and assume it would do it. it's not doing it at all. it's doing so much more. >> tiring. you do 24 hour shifts. we get rest in between. depending on the conditions and the temperatures and such, it can be exhausting. >> the thomas fire burning in ventura county is 10% contained. new this morning, more firefighters from the bay area are headed south. they tweeted one crew and engine are headed to the thomas fire. we have learned that three san mateo teams in southern california will be re-deployed to the area. hearings for two men facing charges in the deadly ghost ship fire last year. derick almena and max harris will face charges. today is the third day of the hearing. more witnesses are expected to take the stand.

it's been emotional with several people describing unsafe conditions and talking about the victims trapped inside when it caught fire. 36 people died in the fire. in the north bay, good economic news for mass transit in sonoma and marin county. smart received more revenue from sales tax than anyone expected. the transit system is mostly funded by sales tax. but, officials tell the paper, the north bay wildfires could mean less money for smart in the short term. 5:09. one east bay city desperately needs salvation army bell ringers. they are averaging ten ringers a day in hayward. over 30 sights need staffing. donations go to salvation army programs. as we approach 5:10 on this monday morning, it's a spare the air day. we have the high smoke pollution coming in from the southern california wildfires.

what's happening here? we have high pressure and that causes the air to sink. as we go higher up in elevation, it is actually warmer. it traps all of that smoke near the surface and the valley. that's what we are dealing with right now. it's most unhealthy in the north bay as we are going to see the highest levels of that air sinking and also not a lot of mixing here. we don't have a lot of high winds today. it's going to be moderate for that air quality in the east bay peninsula and the south bay during this time when we have a lot of smoke pollution in the air. you should limit your time outdoors, even with a very comfortable temperature. i will break it down and show you today's temperature trend for san jose in a few minutes. mike was saying there is a problem in the north bay. >> we got word of this, a problem with the signal on highway 37. this is a critical connection to navato. as we look at most sensors, they

look great. the westbound commute direction, past that exit there, there is a problem getting there with a signal on the track, the train track. because of that problem, they consider the roadway closed or for all intents and purposes, it is closed. you cannot travel from the vallejo direction. i'm not sure here about this. we will double check on that. the alternate is head south toward the richmond-san rafael bridge. the traffic flow is great, but more time. we'll track that and let you know what chp reports. west 37 and lakeville highway, a big problem with the track and signaling. cars are not getting past that point. back to you. coming up, thwarting package thieves. what owe need to know. >> we are awaiting the announcement of the golden globe nominations. we'll bring them live as soon as

involved. the person taken into custody has some sort of injury. it is believed to be a pipe bomb. >> 32nd street and 8th avenue and we have been following tom winter, our nbc reporter on the ground there. he is reporting minor injuries, the sister station in new york reports that device went off prematurely. the new york city mayor has been briefed. we'll bring you more information in a few minutes. we are keeping our eye closely on this. meanwhile, the state of florida investigating a deadly police shooting involving a suspect who grabbed a deputy and held on to him during a confrontation. >> get your hands up, now! >> this happened wednesday at an apartment complex near ft. lauderdale. the suspect, a 42-year-old was not armed. the deputy already used a taser against him, you can see that. when back-up arrived, he had the

deputy by the leg. you saw that earlier. broward county sheriff's department released the security body cam video so the public could see exactly what happened when he was shot. >> this is something that happened in the split second he was forced to deal with. >> both deputies are on administrative leave, that is standard. they will hand the case over to a grand jury. 5:17. there's been a surge in doorstep package thefts. 35% of people who receive shipping items have been victims of thieves when it's left on the porch. shipping companies remind everyone, there are secure options available that include drop-off locations as well. amazon launched an electronic key program to open the door and drop the items inside. they have the lockers that are convenient as well. >> 5:17. business and tech news. bitcoin futures made a trading

42nd and 8th avenue. it is set to be open this morning. the police activity is very busy in that area. our sister station reports that device somehow went off prematurely. they believe it wauz pipe bomb. one person in custody and a lot of activity this morning in new york city near times square. we'll continue to monitor what is going on there. 5:27 here. new this morning, one of the most common household items can pose a hazardous danger to children. a national study spanning 27 years indicate window blinds injured 17,000 children. 271 children tragically have died. in some cases, the injuries occurred when the blinds fell. the most serious danger has been cords that left young children tangled and strangled. they can pull out the cords. you have to watch them.

know about that. that's expected and standard right now. back to you. >> thank you, mike. firefighters watching for hot spots after a garage went up in flames in sunnyvale. this is a live look at elcamino real. pg&e crews arrived because they believe it stemmed from a gas leak. video just into the news room. you can see where the flames were at their height. there was concerns the fire was going to spread to nearby homes. crews were able to contain that fire within ten minutes of arriving on scene. crews saved a dog as well, which was great news. no reports of injuries. fire crews believe that gas line helped fuel the fire. that is why pg&e is there now checking things out. 5:33. happening today, this is a live look at oakland. city services will be shut down for yet another day. in a few hours, a immediamediat

be brought in. pete suratos joins us live in oakland for what to expect today. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura and scott. they can expect to see city services still closed as we enter the second week of the oakland city worker's strike. there's going to be mediation between the union and the mayor's office. the unions agreeing to it over the weekend. that will be an objective party when it comes to contract negotiations. that mediator was brought in by the union. i want to show you the impact we are seeing in some parts of the city. here is video from 27th street. you can see some of the trash build up there as a result of some of the city services not being available near, specifically the homeless encampments around oakland. as far as the sticking points when considering negotiations between the mayor's office and thedo the unions, they have stayed the same. the city offering 6% over two years in contract proposals.

the union wants 4% in two years. 8% over two years. also, part time and temporary workers. unions saying they are overworked and overused by the city. the city is offering part time workers higher wages in their proposal. then there's the health and safety for those workers, specifically those working to clean up homeless encampments. some are noticing the city services impacted by the strike. >> the city does clean up around here. working, doing the job, it gets worse and worse. >> reporter: the services, the public library, city buildings and street sweeping to name a few of the services impacted by the strike. mediation between the mayor's office and the union at some point today. we'll see if that brings them any closer to a resolution.

live in oakland, pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> thanks, pete. 5:35. we could get the autopsy results of a young google software engineer found bed. the body of 23-year-old chuchu ma was found off the trail in sunnyvale. family and friends are upset about her death. ma graduated from the university of texas in austin and worked as a software engineering intern at yahoo! before landing that job at google last year. autopsy results could come in as early as today, hopefully shedding light on to what happened to her. a break in a decades old bay area kidnapping case. the hillsborough police department says a 68-year-old southern california man is in custody on $5 million bond. kevin lynn was arrested in connection with a 1995 kidnapping. he's accused of working with another man to kidnap a 9-year-old girl for ransom.

she was let go after she was held captive nine hours. the arrest was made based on information given to investigators by the u.s. state department. happening today, the first in a series of weekly meetings prompted by the police shooting of an unarmed man in san francisco. it certainly sparked outrage. an unidentified officer shot through his patrol car window, killing a 42-year-old during a chase. graphic body camera video shows that shooting. the officer just started on the force. the investigation is ongoing. tonight's meeting takes place at 5:00 at san francisco police department's bayview station. today is the last day for north bay fire survivors to register with fema for disaster assistance. it can help survivors with costs for short term housing, basic home repair and personal expenses. small business owners can get

temperatures right now, as you get ready to head out in santa rosa, 31 degrees, 30 in fairfield. 1 dateline above freezing in livermore. the temperatures going up in the 60s, low to mid-70s. it will be hazy with the smoke fwr the southern california wildfires moving up to the bay area, creating unhealthy air quality. maybe setting record high temperatures today. 67 degrees. at least high in those records are very close, elsewhere across the area today. as you get ready to head out for the school day in the tri-valley, livermore, 36 degrees at 7:00. then it quickly warms up by late morning, early afternoon. by the time the kids get out of school, mid-60s. we'll have mid-60s in san francisco. morning temperatures staying in the mid-40s over the next several days. inland areas, 40s and upper 30s but our high temperatures up to

70 degrees. we'll see more weather like this over the next seven days. mike has much better news for the north bay. >> highway 37 re-opened. all lanes re-opened. eight or nine miles from the island over to lakeville highway crossing arms for the train, crossing has been open and lifted again. all safe. chp allowed that. more folks heading to napa, not likely. most folks traveling south across the carquinez bridge. we have a lighter volume today. traffic managed to get to the richmond bridge. everything south of there moves well. we have slowing and there may be a crash southbound 680 south of 84. we are looking at a 17 minute drive from 580 to vargas. i'll track that and see if chp has an update.
