we are going to see another cool and clear morning. a live look outside in san jose. christmas in the park. did you get a chance to check it out over the weekend? it still goes on today, starting at 9:00 until midnight. it is going to be a beautiful afternoon. look at all the high temperatures for the afternoon up to 71 degrees in san jose. 74 in half-moon bay. san francisco, 66 degrees. mostly upper 60s, again today. i'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week. mike was saying it is unexpectedly slow in the north bay. >> it is, it is. at least it's moving. we are looking at most of the bay and unexpectedly light for most of the drive. looking at slowing for the tri-valley. a lot of slowing here for west highway 37 out of vallejo from highway 29 toward 121. the earlier issue was tracks. the signals were across the train tracks. now, they are allowing traffic once again. it continues to build. almost two hours. as far as the travel time

registers. i'm looking at the speed sensors, should be less than that. toward navato, a big delay on 37. toward the bay bridge, a smooth drive-through the tri-valley. the metering lights are on. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. we are continuing to follow breaking news out of new york city. we want to take you there live as we have been. an explosion rocked an underground terminal close to times square, three blocks away. a senior new york police official says one person was taken into custody and suffered minor injuries after that explosion. it appeared to be a pipe bomb. no others were hurt. >> so, despite all the cars and trucks you are seeing and the rescue, it does not seem like a lot of people were injured underground, 42nd street, 8th avenue, the port authority terminal near times square. in the last five minutes, the

nypd commissioner who now works for nbc news said on msnbc the blast was carried out by a man in his middle 20s, who detonated that device in the name of isis. this is a former nypd commissioner. nbc bay area is reaching out to local transit agencies. as we get another update, we will bring it to you. developing in the south bay, the search is under way for the person who set a series of fires along 680. new this morning, overnight police activity in the area where the fires started. this is between 680 between montague expressway and hough stetter road. >> we are live in san jose with the latest developments on the search. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and laura. yeah, police activity in this area within the past couple hours. look at video that came into the news room overnight. this was shot on southbound 680

here in san jose, just before the capital avenue accident. you can see san jose police officers with their guns drawn on the side of the freeway. this is an area we believe homeless people tend to live. they had their guns drawn there this morning, a couple hours ago, searching that area. they did take one person, a man, into custody. it is not clear if that person is related to the recent arson fires in the area. starting around 9:30, the san jose firefighters had to put out three small fires along southbound 680. then another ten fires on the northbound side between montague and hofstetter. at least one of the fires came close to homes near the interstate. none caught fire, fortunately. investigators are con vinlsed the fires were intentionally set. chp said over the weekend that

at one point a suspect was seen on a bicycle on the overcross. again, one person taken into custody this morning. not clear if that's related to the recent arsons. live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 6:04. nbc bay area exclusive. we are hearing from an actual juror in the kate steinle murder case. the juror who asked us not to reveal his identity said politics played no part in the decision. the defendant was cleared of the most serious charges in the deadly pier 14 shooting. that shooting sparked a nationwide political debate about immigration. immigration was not part of the deliberations. this juror says he understands why so many people are upset about the verdict. >> if i was not a juror on this trial, i would think the same way, why did you let him go free? but, again, the reason was, they could not prove it to us that

his intention was to kill her. through all the evidence, i really think it was just a freak accident. >> now, the juror points out no mention was made of zarate's prior record or sanction city policies. that's the way the judge wanted it. you can find the full story at www.nbcbayarea.com. it is 6:05. developing in southern california, wildfires are burning. officials issued new mandatory evacuations. crews say they are bracing for more extreme weather in the weeks ahead. we checked with cal fire overnight. there are five major fires. at least 250,000 acres have burned. at least 9,000 firefighters are working against those flames. veteran firefighters say strong, constantly changing winds made the fire hard to predict. >> flames and heat that's put off from grass that i would

normally look at and assume it would is not doing it at all. it's so much more. >> 24 hour shifts. we get rest in between. depending on the conditions and the temperatures and such, it can be exhausting. >> the thomas fire burning in ventura county is only 10% contained. new this morning, we know more firefighters from the bay area are headed south. san francisco fire department tweeted this photo overnight. a crew headed to the thomas fire. three san mateo teams in southern california will be redeployed to the thomas fire. a surprise visit to syria leads to a surprise announcement from russian president, vladimir putin. this just in shows putin's arrival at a russian air base in syria. after meeting with the syrian president, assad, russian forces will start withdrawaling from syria. they have regained control over most of syria and the russian

military will maintain some presence there. >> it is 6:06 right now. to washington, d.c., this morning where all eyes are on alabama. alabama voters will decide tomorrow if roy moore will represent them in the united states senate after weeks without public appearances, the embattled republican nominee is back in the spotlight, denying the claims from nine women including one who was a child at the time. tracie potts joins us live in washington with what happens if moore wins. good morning. >> reporter: hi, laura. good morning, everyone. if he wins, the victory celebration could be short lived. colleagues, republicans here on capitol hill are saying once he gets to washington, he will likely face an immediate ethics review. >> stood for moral values. >> reporter: the voice of politics, roy moore denies dating underage girls or knowing his accuser. >> these allegations are

spare the air day. most pollution from the southern california wildfires. here is what's happening across the bay area that keeps that smoke trapped, especially in the valleys. we have high pressure, which causes the air to sink. as it sinks, it warms. the warmer air higher up in elevation. with all the sunshine, we are going to have the smoke compress into the valleys and makes it difficult out there, especially if you have breathing problems, it will be unhealthy. the north bay, moderate air quality for the east bay and south bay. with the warm temperatures, you do want to limit your outdoor ex exposure, especially if you have breathing problems. we'll talk about the temperature trend. mike is talking about the commute in the north bay. >> the worst of everywhere in the bay. here, no problem, south bay, the peninsula. easy drive. the volume, not bad.

good monday morning, it is 6:14. another cold start as we take a live look outside in downtown san jose. let's go to los gatos for the temperature trend. 50 degrees at 10:00. our temperatures continue to quickly warm up into the low 70s today. what's normal for early december? 58 degrees. we're going way above that. we may see close to setting new records. we will talk about what's ahead with more dry and warm weather throughout the week, coming up.

picker live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> hey, good morning, guys. wall street is set for a positive open after stocks closed higher following friday's strong jobs report. the dow a record close gaining 118 points to close at 24,329. nasdaq rising 27 points closing at 6840. today, investors are eyeing data on october jobs openings from the u.s. labor department. bitcoin made their debut on the exchange sunday evening. the popular one-month contract opened at 15,460 before leaping to a high of 18,700. a 21% gain. launching bitcoin futures gives the currency legitimacy in the eyes of institutional investors. others warn it could be a classic example of a bubble. in 2017, bitcoin exploded more

than 1,000%. apple is stepping up its game in music services. the company is close to acquiring music app shazam. they plan to buy them for $400 million, a steep discount from the latest round of funding, valuing the company at $1 billion. the deal could be announced as early as this week and could give apple music a leg up on competitors like spotify. back to you. >> thank you. it is 6:17 right now. one east bay city desperately nee needs salvation army bell ringers. they are averaging ten a day in hayward. there are over 30 sights that need them. i would do it if i had time to drive over to hayward. are you kidding? people would be paying money to

get them to stop. >> a lot of fun with that, following people around. it's about the good spirit of the holidays, of course. we are all feeling it, especially when you step out the door and it feels like winter out there with temperatures really cold to start. as you get ready to head out this morning, it's only 36 degrees in the tri-valley. the peninsula, 40 degrees. also 41 in the south bay. 30 in the north bay. we are below freezing in many areas especially for those inland valleys and then we are talking about mere record high temperatures today. we go from really cold to really warm. in santa rosa, 67 degrees, which is today's record high temperature. we are not supposed to be this warm. san francisco, up to 66. now, that's a few degrees below that record, but we are going to be very close, as you look at those numbers and the seven day forecast in the bottom of the

screen showing no changes throughout the week. we are up to 64 in antioch today. 66 in san francisco. 69 degrees in palo alto and san jose, up to 71 degrees. as you get ready to head out for the school day, going through that drop-offline in oakland or waiting for the school bus, it will only be at 42 degrees. we'll also see those temperatures warming up by late morning, so, as they head out for lunch, having lunch outside , milder walking home from school in the 60s. we are not going to see changes here. this area of high pressure has been stubborn and kept us from getting rain. we are going to see more of the same as we go through the week here in san francisco. cool mornings, warm afternoons, inland reaching 70 degrees for several days. mike, getting back to a smoother commute. >> we have seen recovery. the issue was in the north bay. that has cleared. we'll show you how much slowing

remains. the south bay, no slowing shows up. lighter volume is what we expect through the end of the year. it will kick in for the afternoon and evening commutes. over here, a smooth drive down the east shore, across the richmond/san rafael bridge. here are the travel times down the east shore freeway, under a half hour, just barely from highway 4 to the bay bridge. the north bay to navato, 37 was the problem. right nour, we are one minute over an hour. as you travel there to skaggs island, it cleared up. it may be 20-25 minutes longer than you are used to. keep that in mind. the san mateo bridge is starting to build. i saw flashing lights westbound. there are no incidents as far as stoppages or lanes blocked. back to you. >> thank you, mike.

>> she couldn't get a refund for the whopping shipping fee. our response team helped her out. here is chris chmura. >> she shipped a box of books to germany from a local u.p.s. store in berkeley. they used dhl to ship it. that box, later was lost in transit. she got a $75 refund. that's the amount she inshired the box for. she wanted a refund for the $450 she paid to ship it, the shipping cost. dhl said they refunded the u.p.s. store for the shipping and had to get it from the u.p.s. store. she tried that, but no luck. she reached out to us for help. this u.p.s. store is independently operated. we contacted it directly. they refunded her the 450 dlarls. a spokesman said they apologized for the delay in refunding the shipping charge. we are glad we are able to do it

all around the bay area. then, as we go into the day, warms up quickly. look at these high temperatures in san francisco. up to 66 degrees. we stay in the 60s and no rain in the seven day forecast. inland areas up to 70 degrees today. we will have a very mild weekend ahead. we will focus just on the weekend and some places you may be headed coming up in seven minutes. mike is saying it's a great drive for most commuters. >> we are talking, look at that, the south bay, which is just building now. it will kick in over the next half hour. we have a crash north 101. everything is off to the shoulder. slowing on the approach. it's typical for the 87 merge. we'll track that. looking at 87, slowing. these are right on schedule for the pattern we are seeing. lighter for this time of morning. south 680, a crash off the dublin. southbound 680, looks like

that's the cause for the beginning and end of the slowing. it does not affect speeds from what i can see. a smooth drive-through hayward, the san mateo and dumbarton bridge. over a half hour to this back up off the berkeley curve. this is the slowest spot across. the north bay, recovering from an earlier crash. westbound 37 is clear. back to you. >> thank you, mike. >> busy out there. we are following breaking news. a bombing atemp that looks like an act of terror. could have been far worse. >> far worse. >> a live look from the skies above manhattan from the helicopters there. 42nd ant and 8th avenue. a few blocks from times square. a pipe bomb exploded less than two hours ago. take a look from the ground. we are hearing from authorities. a man brought a pipe bomb into the subway station and the device exploded prematurely.

we are hearing the suspect was sent to the hospital. fire department there saying four injured. police saying one person injured. we are trying to track down exactly which the bomber is definitely injured. [ sirens ] >> this is video sent to nbc showing the chaotic moments after that bomb exploded as police were arriving on the scene. a short time ago on msnbc, former new york police commissioner cited the source who says the attack is, indeed, an act of terror. >> it is a man in his 20s, probably. possibly from bangladesh. been in the country about seven years. supposedly was setting the bomb off in the name of isis. definitely a terror attack and definitely intended. >> so much information quickly. the other injuries may have been from the sound of the blast.

a very fluid situation we are continuing to follow out of new york city this morning. bob redell joins us live in san jose. we have been contacting police and transit agencies here to see if there are concerns for us, extra security precautions. what did you find out? >> reporter: none we are aware of so far here at the caltran station here in san jose. looks like the normal monday morning commute. a lot of people getting off the train to get to light rail and local buses to get to their jobs. we did reach out to the transit agencies here in the bay area. many law enforcement agencies that help protect the local rails, we did hear back from a normal of caltrain that runs out of the station. the spokeswoman says they are not aware of security changes. they will continue to have their transit police monitor the corridor that runs from the south bay up. in san francisco, muni, their

spokesperson says they will work with san francisco police to determine appropriate deployment strategies. they are monitoring the event. no changes at the time. bart got back to us, their officers have been advised to maintain a high level of visibility an awareness. live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> good to know. thanks so much. meantime, city services shut down in oakland. in a few hours, a mediator will be brought in as they strike for a second week. >> pete suratos joins us live in oakland. pete, we are beginning to see the effects the strike is having in the city. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura and scott. we are seeing some of that impact. think about services for senior centers at some of the early head start services. public libraries will continue to be closed. taking part in the strike. we are seeing issues as far as

routine maintenance around the city. i want to show you video we got on 27th street. you can see some of the garbage picking up there. as you mentioned, there's going to be a mediation taking place at some point today. the mediator chosen by the union. the point is to serve as an objective party in the negotiations. the union agrees to the mediation after they declared an impasse bringing the negotiations to a halt on friday. as far as the main sticking points, there's disagreement when it comes to wage increases. the city offering up to 6% over two years. the union wanting 8% over that two-year period. part time and temporary workers, unions say they are overworked. the city is offering a package that could pay some of those temporary workers more money. vendors, the health and safety concerns for the workers cleaning up the homeless encampments around the city.

the effects of the strike. here is what one had to say. >> the city does clean up around here. at work and doing the job, it gets worse and worse. >> reporter: i want to point out the police and fire personnel are not on strike. they are working at this point. we are talking non-emergency services. while that's taking place, the strike will continue. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. new this morning, firefighters watching for hot spots after a garage went up in flames in sunnyvale. this video just into the news room. you can see the flames there. there was concern this spread to nearby houses. fire crews were able to contain the fire within ten minutes of arriving on scene. they saved a dog. no reports of injuries.

they say a gas line helped fuel the fire. 6:36. we could get autopsy results this week on the young google software engineer found dead in the south bay canal. the body of 23-year-old chucha ma was found off the trail in sunnyvale. family and friends devastated by the death. investigators are scrambling for clues in the case. she graduated from the university of texas in austin and worked at yahoo! before landing a job at google last year. autopsy results could come in as early as today, shedding light on to what happened to her. right now, we want to take you live to a "news conference" happening in new york city after the explosion we have been telling you about near times square. let's listen in. >> in many ways, one of our worst nightmares. the reality turns out better than the -- you had a number of

law enforcement agencies that did a fantastic job. the nypd, police, mta police, they were all on it. you can see behind us representatives of all the agencies coordinated. the assistant director of the fbi, bill sweeney is here. everyone worked together. there was an explosion. the police commission will go over the details. it was a low-tech device. there were several injuries, we hope minor. it was handled extraordinarily well. there was a disruption in train and bus service while a sweep was being done. that's all being restored now. the subway station, subway

service at 42nd street is being restored. the port authority bus terminal is reopened so buses will be running once again. this is new york. the reality is that we are a target by many. we would like a make a statement against democracy. we have the statue s that makes us anernational target. we understand that. the internet now, anyone can go on the internet and download garbage and vileness on how to put together an amateur level explosive device. that is the reality that we live with. the counter reality is that this is new york and we also are

attempted terrorist attack. thank god the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goal. thank god our first responders were there so quickly to address the situation and make sure people are safe. thank god the only injuries we know, at this point, were minor. i agree with the governor, choice of new york is for a reason because we are beacons of the world and we actually show that society of many faiths and backgrounds can work and democracy can work and our enemies want to undermine that. they are going to attack new york city. new york city is law enforcement whachlt t . what the first responders did is the ability to address it quickly. >> we have been listening to a live press conference that was

sponsored by the police shooting of an unarmed man in san francisco. that happened ten days ago. it sparked outrage. an unidentified officer shot through his patrol car window and killed 42-year-old o'neal during a chase. body camera video released last week shows that shooting. the officer just started on the force. the investigation is ongoing. tonight's meeting will take place at 5:00 in the evening at the sfpd bayview station. tragedy in the sierra. a snowboarder was killed in a high-speed crash on the slopes. this morning, we are hearing from the family. david lost control on a trail and struck a snow fence. it happened at sierra at tahoe on thursday. officials just released the details. they say the sacramento state student was heading fast down the intermediate lower snow schu trail. he is remembered as a lively, caring, generous and spiritual

here is another look at downtown san jose at christmas in the park. you are looking out the window like what do i wear today? layers. a good day for a scarf and coat. once it warms up, light long sleeves and pants keep you comfortable. the next several days, it is going to be like this. it's going to be really cold during those morning hours. it quickly warms up if you are going out to the hiking trails in the south bay. 64 degrees for the high. lots of sunshine. cooling down quickly as we go into the evening at 4:00. especially in the south bay. here is the reason why. we keep it dry and we'll have a wide range in temperatures because of high pressure that is blocking any chance of getting any storm systems in here. it makes the air really dry as that air sinks, it warms. the high temperatures reaching mid-60s in san francisco. for the valleys, up to 70 degrees. more cool mornings throughout the rest of the week.

8th avenue not far from times square. about three blocks away. we are hearing from authority officials that the suspect brought in the pipe bomb into a subway station. it likely exploded prematurely. the suspect is in custody. three others suffered minor injuries. >> the mayor said it was an attempted terror attack. there are no other threats to the city at this time. they have identified the alleged bomber as a 27-year-old man from brooklyn. we have reached out to local bay area agencies and bart says expect a larger police prez sense. they are monitoring the situation in new york. of course the "today" show will have more in a couple minutes. 6:57, police say they have very little information about a suspected arsonist. we saw a lot of police activity in the area of a fire. they knocked down eight fires

saturday night. the fires were mostly among the trees and the brush there. police say someone reported seeing a suspect leave on a bicycle. continuing coverage of the raging southern california wildfires this morning. new, mandatory evacuations were issued as the thomas fire spread into santa barbara county. it is the largest of the fires burning in california. started in ventura county, at least 250,000 acres burned in all the fires so far. at least 9,000 firefighters are on the front lines. 6:58. live look in oakland. thousands of city workers starting the second week of a strike, as new efforts are made. service workers walked off the job last tuesday. some services, including street sweeping and trash pick up are slowing. a mediator will be brought in to reach a deal.
