mayor of san francisco, ed lee, died unexpectedly overnight alongside his family. he died at san francisco zuckerberg hospital. we are told he died of a heart attack this morning, early this morning. stunned city leaders gathered outside the hospital. >> we want to go to pete suratos. he is live there at the hospital. he was there for the press conference this morning. pete, certainly a shocking time for a lot of people out there this morning, i'm sure. >> reporter: yeah, shocking time indeed. the news conference took place around 3:30 a.m., a couple hours after mayor ed lee passed away here at san francisco zuckerberg general hospital this morning. we did see now acting mayor, london breed speaking alongside the board of supervisors here. a very emotional time. they discussed the passing of mayor ed lee at the age of 65.

>> reporter: that was current acting mayor, london breed who was the president of the board of supervisors in san francisco, stepping into that role, the unexpected passing of mayor ed lee. in the past 15 minutes, i got a chance to speak to former san francisco mayor, willie brown and mayor lee may have passed away from a heart attack. that was not disclosed in the conference. they didn't say that. that is information we are getting from former mayor of san francisco, willie brown. as far as mayor lee, the family members that he is surprised by, his wife anita and his bought daughters, brianna and tania. he was appointed in 2011, re-elected twice. the first asian-american mayor having an impact in san

francisco and across the country on a number of issues. we are working to get nor information on this. a developing story, a sad story in san francisco. >> thank you very much, pete. very sad news this morning. >> you know, mayor ed lee, always a busy person. from the tweets he posted just yesterday, excuse me, he was busy up to the end. one of the tweets announced the launch of a pilot program making it easy for residents and businesses to recycle. he took a photograph with state senator and small business owner who tweeted about a recent visit where he attended a climate summit. he was a big proponent of phasing out the fossil fuels. ten hours ago, he tweeted about a legislation to build safe housing for dwellers. >> talk about building housing there. he built up a lot of business in san francisco as well. scott mcgrew joins us to talk about that and his legacy. >> remember, ed lee never

expected to be mayor. >> right. >> never expected to be mayor several times, more than one term. lee was appointed to the mayor's office after then san francisco mayor, gavin newsome left. he said he would never run for re-election. pack, who died in september of 2016 was a key influencer in the san francisco chinese community, maybe the key influencer in the chinese community. she paved the path. he was the 43rd mayor in january, 2011, appointed, not elected. almost immediately, tremendous pressure to say in office from the chinese community, the san francisco business community and the san francisco giants as well. he wins the election in november of 2011, runs in 2015 to win a second or third term, depending on how you are counting.

he is going to be remembered for many things. as you pointed out, the growth of san francisco business during his term in office or terms, was phenomenal. >> it really was z. he changed it. >> he really did. if you are brand-new to san francisco, a brand-new kid coming in as an engineer, you may not appreciate how much of san francisco tech was built just in the last couple of years. >> he took twitter. >> the twitter tax break was huge on his part. he was able to convince twitter, when they threatened to leave, he convinced them to stay, using a tax break. here, you see the twitter headquarters on the end of market street there. that end was desolate. the dot com bust hit san francisco so hard, it really had never recovered. he convinces twitter to stay with a tax break. offers that tax break, controversial tax break to other tech companies and all of a sudden, san francisco explodes. >> the hot bed.

overnight in the east bay. multiple homes burned after a construction fire ignited last night. >> at one point, an entire neighborhood was evacuated. we broke into our coverage last night. this is happening off snake road in the montclair neighborhood off oakland. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live with a look at the after math and what happened. a lot of families evacuated, kris. >> reporter: yeah. they have just gotten to go home in the last couple hours or so. you can see it is still very breezy out here and the winds were definitely a factor in the fire fight. you can likely hear the fire engines and the water streaming up here as firefighters are still watching for hot spots. this is what it looked like at the height of the fire fight as the fire consumed a two-story home under construction here on snake road. it spread to another home and three others on the circle.

it threatened to continue spreading from there. in all, 50 homes were evacuated. that is 500 people who were forced to be out of their homes for hours. we did speak with the oakland fire chief about how people here are bracing for wildfires long after the season is over. >> at this point, you are very safe. i think, as we can see what's taken place in oakland and southern california and other areas of the state and this region, fire safety is truly important and starting to become something that people need to be more concerned about on a year round basis, not just seasonal. >> reporter: 500 folk who is had to flee their homes here in montclair, just got to go back in the last few hours. sadly, folks who live in four of those homes have nothing to go back to. the fifth home is the origin of the fire. it was a construction site. we have seen a number of fires

at construction sites. we will look into that more as the day goes on. in oakland, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." right now, at 5:10, we wake up this morning to all clear skies. another cold one. san francisco also needing to grab a coat to head out. it is a spare the air alert day, again, because of unhealthy air quality. it's going to be the worst in the north bay and the peninsula. san francisco, as well and for the east bay and south bay, moderate air quality if you have breathing problems. limit your time outside. as you step out, here is a look at those temperatures, below freezing in parts of the north bay and livermore, you are almost there. we'll talk about the high temperatures coming up. mike has been tracking how it looks for your morning commute. >> kari, we have -- >> i'm sorry. we were going to take mike there. he was going to tell us about traffic alerts. we'll get back to you in moments. we are going to take a quick break. we are remembering san francisco

speak to mr. brown as well. it is sending shock waves across the political community this morning. ed lee dying at the young age of 65. we hope to have more and learn more from the news conference planned for 10:00. other news at 5:15, the polls are open in alabama. people in the state voting in a controversial special election that captured the country's attention. they put doug jones against republican roy moore. he denies allegations of sexual misconduct of several women. >> "today in the bay" is live with details on the last minute campaigning on both sides. good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. the polls are open in alabama, opened about 15 minutes ago. any other year, any other republican candidate and you would say that's almost a guaranteed win for the republican party.

alabama has not sent a democrat to the senate in 25 years. with those allegations against the republican, roy moore, that you mentioned, as well as calls from prominent republicans to step aside and get out of the race, people here in alabama say today, anything can happen. >> roy moore. >> reporter: reached the finish line on monday night. >> we have explored the temples built by the democrats and republican party in this country and found that they have idols that do not hear us, do not see us. >> reporter: moore has been on the defensive more than a month after several women came forward saying he pursued relationships with them when he was in his 30s and they were in their teens. another said he sexually assaulted her when she was 14. moore held few public events, democrat doug jones spent the

weekend crisscrossing the state. finishing with one last push in birmingham. >> we have to make sure that at this cross roads in alabama's history, we take the right road. >> reporter: the former u.s. attorney supporter of reproductive rights is a sticking point. with the allegations joer shadowing moore's run, the calls from prominent republicans for him to step aside don't support or see victory within reach. >> decide who they want to vote for. >> reporter: a race with implications for the white house and the republican agenda. the polls here have been really all over the map. some say that roy moore entered today with a double digit lead. others say the exact opposite that jones had a double digit lead. the only poll that counts is under way. we'll be watching this over the next 13-14 hours.

live in alabama, chris palome. coverage of the special election continues at 7:00 a.m. on the "today" show as well with more reaction from the voters. stay with nbc all day long as results come in tonight. 5:18. good news for parents in oakland. head start programs open the doors again. the massive strike that started tuesday by city workers has been suspended. it's after two sides met with a mediator. it doesn't mean the problem is over. there's no contract agreement. the city workers are looking for higher raise. the mayor says there is no money for that. the workers say that strike could continue at a later date. >> it is 5:18. time for a look at weather and traffic together. another cool start, but the finish has been nice. >> really nice in the afternoon hours. we have to struggle through the morning. it's been really cold and it's

even colder this morning in some spots. we have had well below freezing in parts of the bay area. as we look at the south bay, looking live in downtown san jose, 41 degrees. look at the tri-valley on the right side of the screen. it is only 33 degrees, just one degree above freezing. we are well below freezing in the north bay right now at 30 degrees. we are going to have more of that warm weather in the forecast as you get a look at the bottom of the screen at the seven day. now, we are at 33 in livermore. palo alto, 35. it's been breezy, so it feels colder. it quickly warms up. the south bay up to 67 degrees in cupertino and 70 in morgan hill. upper 60s in livermore. right now, freezing temperatures there. 66 degrees will be the high today in oakland and 66, also in redwood city. san francisco, 64.

we keep track thag with chp. a stalled vehicle north of 238 coming off the castro valley. a few minutes to develop, then we check in there. this is developing overnight. kris sanchez reported a fire off snake road. it affects snake road and shepherd canyon coming out. it's through that area. watch that loop for the fire activity in montclair. highway 13 was never a problem as far as chp reports. north 680 and 242 talked about the glass that shattered across the roadway. still affecting lanes. from what i'm told, fire crews are on scene. no injuries as a result of the crash. it it's counter commute. look at the bay bridge. a quick look at the toll plaza, we are seeing the lanes build in and lanes to the left should be about ready turn the metering lights on. back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up on "today in the bay," breaking news coverage of

hall. maybe at that point, we can confirm the information we are getting from former san francisco mayor, willie brown. as far as who he is survived by, his wife anita and daughters brianna and tania. i can only imagine the emotion they are going through at this time. we are working to get more information and trying to get hold of san francisco mayor willie brown and more information regarding the situation. we'll provide more updates throughout the morning. >> thank you for that update. >> we are getting response and reaction from area lawmakers. here is one from representative eric writing on twitter, rest in peace, mayor. wishing ed's family as they grieve. we will miss him. he was the devoted servant san francisco needed. >> he never expected to be mayor. certainly a man of many facets. he was a big influence on the

whole area. >> as he says, transformational ti time. what a transformational time. he was appointed to mayor. lee said at the time, he didn't want the job as mayor, said hoe would never run for re-election. rose pack credited him into pushing him into the mayor's office. she died in 2016 and was the key influencer in the chinese community. very powerful woman in san francisco politics. she paved the path for lee into the mayor's office. he becomes the 43rd mayor in january of 2011. appointed, not elected. almost immediately, there was pressure on him to stay in the mayor's office as well. now, one of the things we have been looking at is lee's, this is one of the music videos that ran. we were talking about this earlier. one of the things we have been looking at is mayor ed lee's

influence on the san francisco tech community as well. we have seen he pushed for a numbber of tax breaks in tech. what is known as the twitter tax break, the very first one. that end of market street was so dev stated by the dot com bust. keep twitter in town and twitter stays. that, then, creates this. these dominos, standing up. buildings going up. it revitalizes that area. other companies ask for a tax break and they get them. all of a sudden, you see san francisco just respond. a lot of people who are new to san francisco within the last six, seven years probably don't realize the transformation in tech that took place underneath or during his administration. >> amazing to see. a lot of great leadership has come out of san francisco. that includes the great, former

mayor of san francisco, willie brown. of course, former california speaker of the assembly. he joins us by phone this morning. mr. brown, thank you so much for joining us. we know you were good friends with mayor ed lee. >> caller: yes. as a matter of fact, when i served as mayor, ed lee worked with me for eight years in various categories. he was the guy that i had in public works. he did the contract with the business of dealing with people. do work for the city. ed lee had such integrity he could be entrusted with all kinds of responsibilities. i was happy to be of assistance to him to become newsome's replacement. i also am proud of the fact that i'm the guy that convinced ed lee to move to san francisco. he lived in oakland and he was

working for the city. he was representing people in chinatown and all the housing issues. but, icon vinced him that he needed to live in the city. >> of course. helping to set that path. you must have been so shocked to hear the news. how did you hear this morning? >> caller: i was awakened by london breed, shortly before 1:00 a.m., or there abouts. i would not have believed it had i not recognized their voices. i had just been with ed lee a day or so before. he introduced me. normally, i would be introducing him but he introduced me for a speaking engagement on behalf of malia cohen and london introduced him. it was our usual exchanges that we often engaged in. he was a good health, good spirits.

he seemed as lively and interestingly as he had ever been. he was casually dressed, no tie. he was the ed lee that i had come to love. >> what did you see in him? >> caller: i'm glad that i had a chance to interact with him so soon before his death. >> talk to us about what you saw in him. you said you pushed him to run for mayor. what did you see? what qualities did you see that said he is the person for this job? >> caller: well, the city is organized and operates in such a way that there needs to be a real ceo and he utilized his power, mayor newsome moved him up to become the chief administrative office of the city. that's the person that really runs the city.

ed lee did that spectacularly having been all the experience he had with all the agencies, practically over which he had jurisdiction. to the mayorship was almost natural. he was not and did not come from the political world, so to speak. he came from the world where merit determined whether or not you got the gig. that's why he was so natural, for me. when newsome moved on to lieutenant governship, ed lee was becoming his successor. >> what do you think he must be remembered by? >> caller: by being the first asian-american to become the mayor of a major american city, a world class city. that's number one. number two, he will be always

known for having a resers where silicon valley was located. the fact that we have and we are literally where all of the tech heads want to live. that was because of the leadership of ed lee and james kim and the board of supervisors in making it possible for the tech companies to locate in our city. >> sure. >> he will be known for causing to relocate to san francisco. he has a very rich legacy. >> he will leave thumbprints on the city, and you as well. we heard from you early this morning. that is how we got word ed lee suffered a heart attack. you heard that from the family? you heard that from london breed? >> caller: i heard it from london breed and from others who were present at zuckerberg sf

general hospital, awaiting hope that somehow the mayor would be, would come out of this. he did not. his death is listed as a heart attack. >> did you know anything? had he been at home with his family? it happened in the middle of the night. >> caller: well, he was doing his husband duties. he was shopping at safeway out on the district where he lived. i think, as a husband and a father, he had chores. in spite of the fact he was also the mayor, he still had to do his job as a family man. that's what he was doing. >> so tragic to hear. such shocking news this morning. very young age of 65 years old.

it's a story we have been bringing you since 3:00 this morning. more breaking news, multiple homes burned in oakland hills after a construction fire ignited. at one point, an entire neighborhood was evacuated. >> we broke into regularly scheduled programming to bring this breaking news. this happened on snake road in montclair. kris sanchez is live at the scene with a closer look at the aftermath and what happened. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. you can see it is still breezy out here. on the left side of the screen, firefighters pouring water off the side of the bridge to make sure the hot spots don't reignite. on the other side of the screen, up on the top of the ridge, firefighters are using their pickaxes to break up burning embers up there. we have seen some raining down. with these windy conditions, it doesn't take much for the embers to take off. this is what it looked like at

the height of the fire as it consumed a two-story home. it spread to another on snake road and threatened to continue spreading from there. a lot of dry material up here. in all -- >> at this point, you are safe. i think, as we can see what's taking pla taking place in oakland and other areas of the state and the region, fire safety is important and starting to become something people need to be concerned about on a year round basis, not seasonal. >> reporter: preaching to the choir there. 500 people who had to leave their homes left very quickly and may have to do that again. sadly, folks who live in a handful of homes have nothing to go back to. it seems like the fire originated on a construction site, a two-story home under construction on snake road.

we have seen a number of construction fires here in oakland and oakland hills. some of them have been deliberately set. we don't know if that was the cause here. that is still under investigation. we are going to continue to press for details on that and we'll keep watching for those hot spots because we have seen a number of blowing embers around here and the winds are not dying down. in oakland, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much. at 5:49 this morning, another big story we are following after five years of lamar first disappeared. the man convicted of killing her will be sentenced this morning. torres faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. they decided not to give him the death penalty. lamar was 15 years old when she disappeared in 2012 on her way to school in morgan hill. sadly, her body has never been found. searchers looked for her for years. in fact, they gathered every

there, near freezing in livermore and san jose at 41 degrees. then, as we go through the day, it makes it into the upper 60s and a few spots hitting the low 70s, like morgan hill, 70 degrees there. 69 in san jose and 66 in oakland and concord. san francisco, 65 degrees. getting dressed, you look out the window, standing in front of the closet. what do i wear? again, lots of layers. a warm hat and coat. as the day goes along, short sleeves and you'll probably be comfortable wearing jeans and pants. it's a great day. it will be for the afternoon for spending extra time outdoors. as we check out that temperature trend for willow glen, upper 30s to start. then look at how quickly it warms up. by noon, 60 degrees. one free event you may be able to check out is the san francisco garden. they will have free admission today. it will be very nice. the next several days, finally, a change in this pattern that

brings in a chance of rain. that happens the middle of next week. all dry this week and well above normal temperatures for the highs. cooler than normal temperatures for the morning starts. as we head over to mike, you have been tracking some of the changes on the road. >> we are starting to see more company for folks out there. that means slowing because of the volume increase. north of 680, standard pattern there. no changes for the peninsula. that's great news and expected. the traffic hasn't come over the dumbarton. on the east bay, more slowing. that issue has not cleared from the roadways. over on the shoulder, it's cleared from the lane, but still there north 238 at the 880. there's still a distraction and folks are going slow out of castro valley. lighter flow of traffic as you saw from the sensors. another issue at 880, blocking part of the shoulder as well. the transition is moving all right.
