>> glad to have you with us. i'm craig melvin. dylan dreyer standing by. this close encounter we're going to have. are we going to -- >> it's not going to hit the earth, but it's going to come the closest it's been since 1974 and it won't be this close until 2093. >> first lets get to the top story. that's the tax bill getting one step closer to passage. on friday two more republican senators said they would be voting yes on the tax plan. getting closer to giving the president his biggest legislative win in his first year in office. nbc white house correspondent kelly o'donnell is at the white house this morning with what it means for your bottom line. >> reporter: president trump is just a couple of days from what appears to be something that has eluded him during his 11 months in office. that is a major policy idea that turns into law. the president is expecting to see that vote this week because the house has scheduled it for tuesday. it is a tax cut bill package.

democrats have said that it is tilted toward the rich but the president described it in his own way calling the bill monumental. longing for a holiday win, the. gamed out chances for his promised tax cuts. >> i think that we are going to be in a position to pass something as early as next week alcohol be monumental. >> reporter: with newly announced yes votes from republican senators marco rubio and bob corker. gop lawmakers unveiled a final draft that includes lowering the corporate tax rate to 21% setting lower tax rate brackets for individuals, roughly doubling the standard deduction many families claim and in a blow to obamacare, the tax bill ends the insurance mandate. this expected legislative victory tempered by the president's frustrations over the russia probe. >> my worst enemies. they walk out. they say there is no collusion,

but we'll continue to look. they're spending millions and millions of dollars. there is absolutely no collusion. >> reporter: president trump turned his ire toward the fbi after it was disclosed a top agent was removed from the investigation last summer because of anti-trump text messages sent during the 2016 campaign. >> it's a shame what's with the fbi, but we're going to rebuild the fbi. it will be bigger and better than ever. >> reporter: that criticism came as the president headed to the fbi academy for a law enforcement graduation ceremony where the president riffed in campaign style. >> you see there's the fake news back there. look, everyone. fake news. no. actually, some of them are fine people. >> reporter: while praising local law enforcement, the president decried urban violence. >> what the hell is going on in chicago?

what the hell is happening there? >> reporter: the president was also asked by reporters if he's think being a pardon for michael flynn, the former national security adviser who pleaded guilty in charges related to the russia probe. the white house says no such consideration is happening. the president basically said that but added not yet. sheinelle, craig. >> kelly, thank you. elise jordan is a political analyst. she is also a former senior policy analyst for rand paul. let's start with the tax bill. republicans insist this will give the middle class a much needed tax break. they insist it will spur economic growth. you've got the tractors that say this is a corporate giveaway and it will mean that the approximate the and his wealthy friends will do well come tax time. a recent poll shows that just 25%, 25% approve of how republicans have handled tax reform. how much pressure have the republicans put on themselves

for a win and what might this mean come midterm next year? >> the problem right now is most voters have no idea what is actually in this tax bill and how it's going to affect their lives. going into this process the white house wanted to simplify the tax code. they wanted to have corporate tax reform. right now, though, 6,000 lobbyists were working on this bi bill. it doesn't seem like the swamp draining happened that's actually going to necessarily make this easier for people to actually file your . . . >> let's switch gears and talk about the criticism of the fbi we just heard. key allies of the president bashing the fbi voices on the right. he goes to quantico, virginia, and praises them. how is this talk playing politically? >> this is a pattern with president trump. he attacks institutions when he doesn't think the outcome might not be favorable to him.

go back to the campaign and his attacks on a judge and judiciary. right now, he is unhappy with bob mueller's investigation. he is unhappy with the fbi. he is attacking the messenger. it is a dangerous precedent, because it destroys the public trust and the a political nature of these institutions. >> president trump insists there is no collusion between his campaign and russia. he also talked about the phone conversation he had with vladmir putin in which putin praised him. does he still have a blind spot when it comes to russia and president putin? >> it is the most bizarre tendency of president trump for someone who has a lot of criticism and is known for not holding back his criticism. he never has a bad word to say about vladmir putin. >> why is that? >> this came about after yesterday, vladmir putin did his famous four-hour press conference. he praised the stock market.

so president trump wanted to reach out to putin to thank him for praising him. so vladmir putin has figured out a very successful tool to winning over this president, you praise him and he responds very well to flattery. >> always good to have you. thank you. now to president trump's judicial nominee coming under fire after this video of his appearance before the senate judiciary committee went viral when he couldn't answer the most basic questions about the law. nbc justice correspondent, pete williams, has more. >> raise your right hand? >> reporter: it is rare that a nominee for a lifetime appointment as a federal judge has no courtroom experience. that was a problem for matthew peterson during his senate conversation. the most attention-getting questions came from a republican, john kennedy of louisiana. >> have you ever tried a jury trial? >> i have not. >> civil? >> no. >> criminal? >> no. >> bench? >> no. >> have you ever argued a motion in federal court?

>> no. >> peterson is a former congressional staffer and lawyer in private practice. he served on the federal election commission with don mcgahn. he conceded that he has no background in trial work. >> i understand the challenge that would be ahead of me if i were fortunate enough to become a district court judge. >> reporter: he could not answer basic legal questions like a commonly used method to block actions. overall, the white house is doing well with its court picks. the senate has confirmed 12 trump nominees to the federal appeals court. a record for a president's first year in office. in president obama's first year, he had only three. two other trump nominees for the court were derailed. allegations that brett tally made support toive comments abo the kkk helped sink his nomination. >> things that showed he didn't use good judgment.

ya savino saying they were both difficult to work with. the nfl's carolina panthers have opened an investigation into jerry richardson for allegations of misconduct. a developing story out of rutgers. members of a sorority were allegedly drugged by members of a fraternity during september. the school's newspaper uncovered documents claiming that members of the fraternity spiked a drink with a mixture of alcohol and xanax. ten members of the cigna delta tau fraternity got sick. some passed out. the sigma chi fraternity has been suspended for two years. the white house has released the president and first lady's christmas portrait. in the cross hall of the white house. we are talking snow for some folks. dylan dreyer is back.

>> 'tis the season. it looks pretty. it is back through the great lakes where we have had most of our snow. within the past 24 hours, we have seen about 7, 8 inches of snow. you can see as the cold winds cross over the unfrozen great lakes, more lake snow is likely. as for additional snowfall accumulations, between four and five inches of snow specially in those areas that get stuck in those heavier bands. we have heavier rain down south. as we go through the day, this area will produce heavier downpours. it moves through louisiana on sunday and spreads through the rest of the gulf coast as we continue through the weekend. rainfall amounts, there is a fire danger through the weekend. we are expecting strong, gusty winds.

mythology who neal set fire to the earth by accident. considered three miles wide and potentially hazardous. >> it's still far away and nothing to worry about but something to have in mind. >> it will be 6.4 million miles away. that's like traveling from the earth to the moon 27 times. >> it's relatively close in astronomical terms. >> scientists hoping asteroids like this one could one day act like gas stations in the sky and help fuel deep space eck pl exploration. >> if we are able to get fuel out of them they could become an asset. >> reporter: and on friday a ground breaking mission from space x. its falcon nine rocket and capsule headed for the international space station. the rocket landing perfectly back on earth.

we are under that microclimate weather alert and you have a lot going on. >> yeah. i was actually looking at the wind forecast and it looks like the winds are starting to pick up, especially in the high elevation areas. those are our main points of concern. at this hour, 46 degrees in the south bay. the peninsula also in the 40s. as the winds pick up we are dealing with fairly dry conditions so for the elevated areas and the highlighted area that you see on this map, we are dealing with that red flag warning. that is kpektexpected to be in through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. sustained winds between 50 to 20 miles per hour. that humidity is going to be low, between 10 and 20%. we can expect a couple of changes overnight into sunday. i will break down all of the details for you coming up of course during the 7:00 a.m. hour. >> we will definitely have to stay tuned for that. people who live in the oakland hills and other fire

zones will be on alert over the next 30 hours. here's a look at firefighters at station 24 gearing up last night. that flag they're raising there alerts neighbors that there's fire danger in the oakland hills. crews are prepared for high winds expected to pick up today. they say this is a time when vegetation is dry and just ready to burn. firefighters request that people in the oakland hills keep the narrow reaoads as clear as possible. emergency vehicles need room to drive into the fire zones. we turn now to the continuing coverage of the sudden death of san francisco mayor ed lee. there will be a private memorial for mayor lee's family. yesterday there was a public memorial and thousands payed their rmtespects. people viewed him at city hall for 11 hours. a true reflection of mayor lee himself. tomorrow is mayor lee's memorial

need. >> you're the best! >> they are spreading holiday joy today, saturday, december 16th, 2017. protecting, serving, and giving. >> one of my favorite parts of the holiday, the random acts of kindness for sure. also new this morning, police in toronto, canada, are investigating a pair of mysterious deaths after a billionaire and his wife were found dead in their home. nbc's morgan radford is following this. good morning. >> reporter: hey there, good morning. certainly a tough one. friends and neighbors of barry sherman and his wife are in disbelief after learning the two were found dead in their home friday. he was the founder of a generic drug giant called apatex. police remaining tightlipped about what actually happened. this morning, detectives are trying to solve a mystery at a toronto mansion. >> we've discovered two bodies of people inside a home. >> reporter: canadian billionaire bernard "barry" sherman and his wife honey were found dead in their toronto home on friday.

>> the circumstances of their death appear suspicious. we are treating it that way. >> reporter: according to the "globe" and "mail," they were selling their multimillion dollar mansion when a real estate agent preparing for an open house discovered the bodies in the large home's basement. police are still investigating a cause of death. >> if it is determined to be a homicide, our investigators from homicide will come in. >> reporter: sherman made his fortune in pharmaceuticals, founding the generic drug giant apatex. at the time of his death, "forbes" reported his net worth to be $3.2 billion. sherman did face family drama. a decade-long legal battle against his cousins just tossed out in september. they claim sherman owed them a chunk of apotex due to the sale of a family business decades ago. overnight, con dolentses poured -- condolences poured in. "all of us at apotex are deeply saddened and shocked." "barry and honey were kind, good people, who will be greatly

missed. the philanthropic and economic contributions to toronto put them in a class of their own." from prime minister justin trudeau, "our condolences to their family and friends and to everyone touched by their vision and spirit." this morning, the shermans are being remembered not only for their contributions in health care but also their generosity. quoted as saying, "we are fortunate in being able to contribute. you can't take it with you, so the best alternative is to put it to good use while you are here." police are expected to release more information later today after a medical exam. they have said they are not looking for suspects at this time. >> morgan, thank you. let's go to dylan, she's on the plaza with another check of the weather. cold outside this morning. >> it is chilly. it's december. so i guess we all kind of expected it at this point. let's look at what's going on out west. the fire danger is still going to be pretty dangerous because those winds are not coming off the water. it's a land breeze that's going

to keep things dry. and we have 17 million people at risk, extending all the way from sacramento and san francisco down to san diego. and we are looking at those higher winds and also very low humidity. we have red flag warnings and the fire weather watch up and down most of california. winds could gust to near 60 miles per hour, causing fires to spread rapidly without too much that red flag warning is going to affect us here in the bay area. we've had this in place since last night at 10 -- actually rather 10:00 a.m. last night and it is going to be in effect through 10:00 a.m. on sunday. we're already starting to see gusts picking up especially for the higher elevation areas. santa rita already seeing gusts of about 44 miles per hour. alice peak dealing with gusts of 32 miles per hour and oakland north 47 miles per hour gust. we'll have an update again during the 7:00 a.m. hour. skpnchts that's your latest forecast.

household were traditional. we'd wake up my dad and then he'd have the whole getting ready thing to do. he forced us to stay on the stairs until he came down. my brothers and i would creep down a step, creep down a step. even when we'd come back from college, when my brothers were married, we would all pile on to the stairs and sit and wait. christmas morning never changed no matter how old we got. >> i did believe in santa. usually the letters i would write to san ta, were appeal letters, because i knew that santa probably had heard that perhaps i had not been the best that year. so i would use the letters as an opportunity to make my case. >> every year my grandmother would give my sister and i $50 apiece. sometimes $100. we would go to woolworth. it was like a five and dime store. we would write out all the people we would get gifts and we would have to budget. then she would set out the wrapping paper and the scissors
