went out around 1:00 sunday afternoon after a fire damaged the main substation powering the airport and its back up. the cause is under investigation. power slowly came on terminal by terminal over the course of 11 hours to the cheers of wary passengers. more than 1300 flights were canceled or delays with more back ups expected to ripple into today. dan has more. >> reporter: a massive power outage at the busiest airport. >> we are waiting to see what's going on and what to do next. >> reporter: all flights halted. arriving planes held at port of departure. arriving passengers were stuck on the tarmac. others said finding flight information was a struggle. >> we haven't gotten an e-mail or text. i am surprised at that. >> the airline get a different flight. the system is down. this is a mess. >> reporter: the power outage came at the start of a busy travel season.

u.s. air carriers are expected to fly 51 million passengers between december 15 and january 4th. sunday's canceled and delayed flights may have dampened travel flights, it didn't damper the holiday spirit. >> santa claus came around wishing us a merry christmas. lightened the mood a little bit. >> reporter: a lighter mood for passengers who can do little but wait. nbc news. this morning, after spending a week at a maryland medical center, senator john mccain is back home in arizona. he's said to under go therapy. he will not be back in washington until january. it couldn't have come at a worse time for president trump with a long awaited vote on the tax bill expected to take place tomorrow in the house. the thomas fire scorched 270,000 acres in california making it the third largest wildfire in the state's history.

it killed two people. 18,000 people are under threat and 10,000 or 100,000 people, i should say, were forced to evacuate. among them, actor rob lowe writing, pray for santa barbara. >> the blaze is 45% contained. the red flag warning is flaring. >> i referred to the fire as a beast. it is a monster. we all recognize that. we will kill it. the team behind me, the men and women out in the field, i have no doubt they will take care of business and we will put this fire out. >> nbc's scott cohen is at the main center in ventura. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, philip. 8500 fire personnel are here getting ready for a crucial couple of days. the winds have died down. those santa ana winds that have been whipping up the flames for

two weeks now, leading to tense moments over the weekend. for the next couple of days, we are expecting those winds to be basically gone, calm, higher humidity, a chance for firefighters to get more of a handle on this fire, which is about 45% contained. not before burning some 270,000 acres or 420 square miles. larger than most major cities. now, as the fire begins to subside in some areas, residents are beginning to reflect on all they have been through. >> the smile and it's all we can do right now. >> it has a huge effect on the local economy. it's tough. we are all in the same boat. we have to still keep plugging through. >> reporter: the firefighters and the residents will be dealing with this for weeks to come. cal fire, the fire fighting agency in the state is projecting now, at this pace,

the fire will be contained on january 7th, more than a month after it broke out. philip? >> scott, thank you. to get a sense of the lasting impact of the wildfires, joe friar traveled further up the california coast north of san francisco, a community left scarred by a devastating fire back in october. >> reporter: in california's wine country, the flames are in the past, but a return to normal is far in the future. jennifer's family wakes up earlier these days for the 35 minute drive to school. >> bye, see you later. >> reporter: a trip that once took three minutes. >> have a good day. >> reporter: they are attending their old school, even though their house burned to the ground. >> people have said, why don't you put your kids in school there? i said because the kids in school there aren't going through what my kids are going through. >> reporter: here, in santa rosa, a quarter of the students

lost their homes. in this kindergarten class, half are fire victims. most returned, including the school psychologist. >> it's about getting back to normalcy. >> the fires destroyed 6400 homes. fire ravaged debris litters many neighborhoods for many homeowners rebuilding, we'll take another 1-2 years. >> crazy. >> reporter: june and jaime clark lost their house of 38 years. unlike the neighbors, they lot has been cleared. the rebuilding process is now a full-time job. >> you know, this is like running a marathon. we are a mile in. >> reporter: as the holidays approach, they are slowly settling into a temporary home, a rental. >> christmas is going to be hard. normally, it's wrapped around our home. >> i tell people, i'm living a day at a time. that's really what it is. >> reporter: still, look closely around this town. you will find decorated trees
