>> hundreds of people, including california leaders like governor brown, senator dianne feinstein, nancy pelosi and gavin newsome were there for the life ceremony. they all spoke and so did acting mayor, london breed. she reminded his wife, anita, and their daughters of the respect of the man they knew as father. here is acting mayor, london breed. >> our mayor had kindness, he had class, he served others before himself. he listened. he cared. and he fought for our city, all of its people, with the quiet dignity of a man who knows exactly what he stands for. >> mayor ed lee died on tuesday

morning after suffering a heart attack. >> loved by all and revered as one person in san francisco. >> terry mcsweeney shows us how the chinese community is remembering the life of mayor ed lee. >> generations of asian-americans he inspired. >> reporter: the chinese community well represented, waiting to pay respect to the first chinese-american mayor of san francisco. >> definitely the first one to be from our community. so, we are proud of that. >> reporter: lee, a son of chinese immigrants made his mark as a civil rights attorney, representing tenants in san francisco's chinatown. some believe he never stopped fighting for the chinese community. >> gone too fast. actually, city people needed him and also the community needed him. yeah. we really love him. >> reporter: in 2011, as the acting mayor of san francisco, lee joined oakland's mayor at

the time, jean quan for a white house dinner with the president of china. >> they went to the white house. that picture, i have seen that picture out in the suburbs and out in small towns in america because it meant to a lot of people chinese-americans finally arrived. >> reporter: hours after the service ended, anna law taking pictures of the memorial. >> not only for the chinese community, but he did it for everybody. the city of san francisco. i'm proud of him. >> reporter: this is the program, the news of today's ceremony, the official photo of ed lee and what you would expect at the front of the program. on the back, it tells you something more about the man. ed lee in his younger days, more rebellious and the writing in chinese. in san francisco, terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >> look at all those flowers.

reporters have been covering mayor lee's celebration of life on air and off since his death last week. this is a tweet of the american flag held by the fire department. we remember when that was unfurled live on "today in the bay." you can follow terry mcsweeney on twitter. >> an arsonist may have struck again in the south bay. it happened this weekend. you may recall our reporting last week about 20 suspicious fires. the latest fire was spotted sunday morning near the southbound 680 onramp. this is off capital expressway. the fire appears to have started in a shopping cart next to a homeless encampment, then spread to surrounding vegetation. chp says that fire is connected to a recent string of suspicious fires. >> recent close calls at sfo prompted a lawmaker to have new legislation. the congressman is proposing

legislation to promptly preserve cockpit voice recorders. in one case, a plane almost landed on a private taxiway. in another case, they didn't hear them telling them to go around. because the recorders were not removed, the conversations have been lost. ntsb says those proposed rule changes are not necessary. a police officer is under investigation after he fires shots inside a san francisco hotel. it happened early sunday morning. here is the dispatch call that went out to officers. >> there was gunshots on the 17th floor, six or seven shots. >> this is the four seasons hotel. exactly what led up to the gunfire is not clear. the officer barricaded himself inside the hotel room, but surrendered eventually. guests were told to stay inside their rooms as the hotel was

searched. >> i was shocked. >> the officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation bafr taken into custody. no one was hurt in this incident. 4:37. next on "today in the bay," tesla saying no more to certain customers using their charger stations across the area. why the company is telling them to charge somewhere else. gas prices are going down. but, are they really saving you money? how much more americans are paying for gas today than they did last christmas, coming up next. ♪

good morning, i'm contessa brewer at cnbc headquarters. wall street could open sharply higher this morning. the futures all in the green this morning. the dow is up 161 points right now. the markets coming off a positive week that saw the dow and nasdaq rise more than 1%. look for economic data on housing, gdp and consumer sentiment. the dow rose 413 points to 24,651, nasdaq up 80 to 3966. toyota plans to have an electric version of all suvs by 2025. they are in talks with panasonic to develop energy efficient rechargeable batteries.

they aim to sell 5.5 million electric or hybrid cars by 2030. if you buy a tesla for work, you won't be able to use the company's charging stations anymore. they are prohibiting commercial vehicles from using the red and white charging ports, which have become all purpose. tesla says the superchargers are intended for people who don't have ready options at home or work. they announced fees for charging and will charge extra if a driver leaves their charge unplugged after it's been fully charged. how about that? >> i guess i won't drive my tesla to work anymore. thank you, contessa. good news for drivers around christmas time. actually gas dropped three cents. prices are expected to go down more. bad news, we are paying a quarter more than last

look, 36 in the north bay and 48 in san francisco and the east bay at 44 degrees. the seven day forecast at the bottom of the screen. as we go into today, we will be up to 64 degrees. downtown san jose, 66 degrees. 63 in concord and fremont, expect a high of 64 degrees. 62 in san mateo and redwood city and also in daly city. 65 in the mission district. for the north bay, it is going to be nice and warm, a lot of sunshine. navato, 65 degrees. taking a live look outside, you are getting dressed this morning and standing in front of the cl closet. with all the sunshine today, do not forget the sunglasses, then peeling off the layers. earlier, i was saying i was excited about this rain mostly because it will bring in our first significant chance of rain we have had for the whole month of december. and, it doesn't look to cause any problems. that's the best kind of rain we

get here in the bay area. it will be all dry today, a lot of sunshine. clouds move in tomorrow. by late tomorrow night, we'll start to see rain moving into the north bay and that will be dipping into the south baby wednesday morning in time for that commute. it's in and out of here. mostly done by wednesday afternoon. then, we head back into dry weather. it's also going to be really cool and then as we look at how much rain we could see, it shows a potential of at least a tenth inch of rain for the bay area, which is more than we have had all month long. the first day of winter is on thursday. it's going to feel like it. look at those temperatures, breezy and 57 degrees in san francisco. inland areas have very cold mornings, possibly a lot of freezing temperatures for the inland valleys. mike, you are tracking that closure in santa clara? >> i am. i was going to say there was a reopening of the off ramp, but

it's closed again. southbound 101, santa monica expressway is closed once again. it's changed status three times in ten minutes. there's activity going on on city streets, nothing major to hit the news room. the rest of the south bay, where the northbound push would be for the morning, not happening yet. it's still early. the transit system, no delays, bart has 29 trains. check that, one delay for ace. it's a one minute delay. we'll show you how things are shaping up at the bay bridge. the cash lanes are backing up. not all the cash takers are open yet. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 4:49 now. to a developing story out of the east bay. i want you to look closely at your screen. that car on the top of your screen there, you can see people inside that car actually shoot a

gun flair into the home. look closely. this happened in san ramon saturday night. they hit five homes. luckily none of the homes caught fire. they believe the suspect's car is an older model, nissan sentra. back to the table. talks continue today between oakland leaders and city workers after a strike that brought the city to a standstill. people on both sides reached a contract deal last week. there's still work to be done. they agreed to give workers a 6% raise over the next couple years. the contract is expected to be approved this week. at 4:50, senator john mccain recovering from brain cancer treatment in arizona this morning. he returned to his home state. he is suffering side effects from chemotherapy he received from a malignant brain tumor. they will vote on the president's tax bill. the gop has enough votes to pass

that bill. still, president trump told reporters john mccain would return to washington, if congress needs his vote. >> i did speak to senator mccain. i wished him well. i wished john well. he is headed back. i understand he will come if we need his vote, which hopefully we won't. the word is john will come back if we need his vote. >> mccain's doctors say he is responding well to treatment. a new nbc news wall street journal poll has good news for democrats following an upset victory in alabama. 50% of americans prefer democrats to control congress. 39% say they want republicans to stay in charge. experts say the numbers may mean the gop is at a disadvantage next year. if you are in need of health insurance, there's time to get covered. the deadline for cover california has been extended to friday, december 22nd. that's if you want health

insurance starting january 1st. in the last few days, thousands of californians signed up. in fact, sign up this year is outpacing last year. coming up on "today in the bay," tackling highway shootings in the east bay. the actions several cities are taking to stop that violence. first, happening now, we are following a developing story. afghan security forces under attack in kabul. gunmen stormed an intelligence training center. there was heavy gunfire. we are waiting for a death toll. no group claimed responsibility for the attack. holiday travel chaos in germany. heavy snowfall cancelling flights at frankfurt airport. we'll be back in two minutes with more news, stick around.

good morning to you. you are watching "today in the bay" on this monday morning as we get you started on your day. live pictures from interstate 80 in richmond. at this hour, you can see one, two, three cars. >> you can count them. >> not too many, but that is going to change. mike is following what's going on on the roads. happening tonight, the city of pittsburgh is expected to sign off on a security project. they will install video cameras, license plate readers on highway 4 in antioch. it would be installed on i-80 between richland and hercules. raiders fans may be bummed. their team was close last night to a win that might have saved the season. >> this is how close we mean.

the width of the folded note card on the fourth down, measurements that no cart can measure for the cowboys first down. >> isn't that crazy? >> the ref still gave dallas the first down. from there, the cowboys won. the raiders had less than a minute left. david karr stretched for the goal line, but fumbled. the ball went back to the cowboys. oakland lost, 20-17. that killed their chances for the playoffs. >> fans were feeling hopeful. looks like they have a quarterback. niners won it, 25-23, their third straight win with garoppolo behind center.
