a commute nightmare this morning. two big rig crashes on both sides of the bay. we have team coverage. commute nightmare this morning. two big rig crashes on both sides of the bay. we've got team coverage for you. good morning, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. first we want to get to that deadly big rig accident involving a fedex truck on 880. screen nay, a really tough scene this morning. >> a deadly crash involving -- you can see this right here, this is the scene moments ago, we got this video in of that deadly crash involving a fedex big rig and what appears to be another vehicle. right now all lanes of the southbound 880 area are completely blocked off right at the coliseum. so at this point we've seen that traffic backed up all the way to

fruitva fruitvale. if you have plans to hop on to southbound go around. they don't have an estimated time of when these lanes are expected to open and unfortunately when they are dealing with a deadly crash that's possibly going to take quite a while. you definitely want to try to avoid the area. we're already seeing heavy delays all the way back through fruitvale, so make sure to get off before you hit fruitvale avenue, take the surface streets and hop back on after coliseum. we can expect to see a couple delays not just on southbound 880 but also along the surface streets as well. we have another deadly crash and this one is in palo alto involving another big rig. this one has three -- actually, rather, one lane open of four. so three lanes of four are closed right now and a sig alert has been issued. our traffic maps are showing delays out of that area as well.

francisco, crisp and clear, temperatures there in the upper 40s, but only upper 30s in santa rosa and 38 degrees in san jose as you head out the door with our high temperatures today in the upper 50s. very much like yesterday, but not as windy. we will talk about the rest of the forecast coming up in just a few minutes. thank you very much. it is 4:33. we have breaking news out of australia overnight. nearly 20 people are hurt after a car crashed into a crowd on melbourne street. police say there is no evidence to subject this is a terrorist act. the driver has been arrested. he was alone in the vehicle. police say he is a 32-year-old australian citizen with a history of drug use and mental health issues. a holiday heist caught on camera. a man breaks into a south day archery shop and takes off with some potentially dangerous weapons. this happened early tuesday morning in downtown gilroy inside of predator's archery. the shop's co-owner says that the suspect made off with more

than $10,000 in gear and that's not all, one of the stolen bows was specialized for a student named eddie who has cerebral palsy. he takes the bus down to gilroy every week to practice. >> everything else can be replaced, but that one is personal. so that was tough on eddie. >> well, the owner says that they are going to make a new bow for eddie. gilroy police are investigating this. a woman says a man sexual assaulted her in berkeley. happened earlier this month. police just announced it. the victim says it happened about 9:00 in the morning when she was jogging near ninth avenue and high street. police say the woman did not need hob hospitalized but they say the suspect is still at large and police have not released a suspect description so far. the search is on for this man, however, antioch police just putting out this sketch we are showing to you now. detectives say the suspect shot and killed another man back in april. the shooting happened april 2nd on k street just a few blocks

from the cop tntra cost at that fairgrounds. officers placed a decoy package with a tracker on the front porch, then when that thief strikes police track the package and swoop in. officers found several items in the suspect's car including this teddy bear, they say it will return to its rightful place underneath a tree. thousands of south bay parents will get a boost to making their christmas a special one. >> more toys are still needed to ensure a happy holiday for all the families in need. the apartments of more than 6,000 children will receive toys and books at the annual give away for san jose sacred heart community service but the charity is still some 4,000 toys short of its goal. you can still donate online or at sacred heart's donation station on first street.

the reuben is back for a limited time at subway. so much reuben. good morning, i'm landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. investors digest the tax bill. stocks ending slightly lower yesterday and the markets had been on a record breaking run leading up to the bill passing. the dow is up 5% just in the past month. look for data today on unemployment and gdp. the dow slipping 28 points yesterday to 24,726, the nasdaq losing 2 to 6,960. several companies have announced they will pay holiday bonuses

and increase pay for workers in the wake of the passing of the republican tax bill. that's giving some support to claims by president trump and gop lawmakers that the bill would lead to more investment by companies with the money that they save. at&t and comcast the parent of nbc universal will give $1,000 bonuses to thousands of employees once the bill is signed into law. wells fargo and fifth third bank will hike minimum wage for hourly workers to $15 an hour. walmart is reportedly testing a personal shopper service for what it calls high net worth urban consumers or busy new york city moms. it uses text messages to get recommendations and make purchases. you can even send a photo to show what you want. household items will typically get delivered within 24 hours. >> thanks, landon. >> personal service. busy roads out in the roadways. busy in the weather department, too. >> we are tracking very cold temperatures for this first day

of winter, even freezing conditions expected today. as we take a live look outside from emeryville the bay bridge is already slowing with a lot of traffic. as we get a look at these numbers now what you're feeling as you step out the door. it is only 38 degrees in santa rosa and 36 degrees in livermore, 38 in san jose. it's going to get colder over these next few mornings. as you check out that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen more changes in the forecast farther down the line, but as we look at our high temperatures it's going to be in the upper 50s in san jose, 59 degrees, 59 also in danville, oakland 58 degrees and 58 also in san mateo. in san francisco marina district 54 degrees and novato today 59, mill valley 57 degrees. so getting started this morning, standing in front of the closet, a good way to start out with something nice and warm. also the layers needed today. gloves, do you have an ice scraper?

you may need it. also a good day to wear your cute boots. it is the first day of winter so you might as well get them out if you haven't already. as we go into tonight into tomorrow morning we will have a freeze warning. so our temperatures dipping into the upper 20s and low 30s. there may be some patchy road ice, especially in the north bay and in some of those higher elevations. you want to make sure you dress in layers, once again, wear a hat. bring those pets inside, make sure they're ready and prepared for this cold weather. and cover your sensitive plants. the coldest time will be right around sunrise which is at about 7:20. as we go deeper into the forecast we will have another chance of rain moving in on christmas. really good news here because we may see more snow in the sierra as well. looking at our seven-day forecast for san francisco, reaching into the mid 50s over the next several days, cold mornings, patchy frost and then going to see that rain moving in on christmas with some slightly milder temperatures and that

will be here by the middle of next week. as we head back over to vianey, an update on the sig alerts. >> unfortunately we're starting off our thursday morning with a deadly crash so i'm going to get just right to it. we're still seeing that sig alert very much in place, it is still a hard closure which means all lanes are completely blocked off, they are not letting anybody on or off starting at southbound 880 at 66th avenue all lanes are completely blocked off. you can see the delay is already here. if you are headed in this direction, if you are planning to drive down from the east bay hop off on southbound 880 before fruitvale area. so definitely make sure to hop off before fruitvale avenue so you don't get caught up in this mess. they haven't given us an estimated time of when that is expected to open, but it is a deadly crash so you can imagine we're expecting this to be a pretty hard closure for quite some time. we're also following another sig alert. we've actually got two reporters both on the way to each scene to give us updates from the ground.

we have a crash northbound 101 at embarcadero, right now only one lane is open. so of the four lanes, one lane is open, but you can see it's definitely starting to cause some heavy delays as well out of that area, carl pavano did give us an update on this estimated time of when they are expecting to sacancel out the sig alert i at 5:00 a.m. it looks like this is another semi-involved accident and that's why we have seen so many hard clo esh urs. you can see the police activity. like i said, get off before fruitvale avenue or else you will get caught up in all of this backup. i do want to show you a couple ì% you haven't downloaded waze, this is a perfect opportunity to do so. you can see it here, this is the area where that crash is. the slowest one is 880 southbound oakland, 24 minutes, this is where the crash is. your best route right now is san

leandro street, surface streets and hop back on in oakland, you are looking at ten minutes, via san leandro street 11 minutes. waze is going to get you around all of that traffic, this is a perfect opportunity to do so. make sure to join the nbc bay area traffic team and let us know what you're seeing. again, we do have reporters headed to the scene to give us live updates of the crash of that deadly 880 accident and the sig alert in palo alto. >> they're getting caught in some of that traffic out there it's so bad. 4:49. why you this morning the family of a woman shot and killed by a minneapolis police officer is demanding a closer look at the investigation. in july a police officer shot and killed justine damon after she called to report a woman screaming outside her home. damon's family lives in australia. the father made his first public comments about that case yesterday. he now believes the investigation is not being

handled properly. >> we are deeply concerned about the possibility that the initial investigation was not done properly and with the greatest integrity or sense of completeness. >> recent comments from prosecutors suggest there may not be tough evidence to charge the police officer. they say that's in part because state investigators had not significantly done their jobs. 4:50 right now. fallout this morning from a stunning accusation by an american olympic star, mcculloch -- mcculloch maroney says u.s.a. gymnastics wanted her to sign a nondisclosure agreement. that would have been part of a financial settlement she says she needed to pay for psychological treatment. her attorney is appearing on the "today" show in an interview this morning. >> i think the facts of this case eventually will show that u.s.a. gymnastics had a lot of

knowledge about his conduct and decided that their best course of action was to cover it up. >> u.s.a. gymnastics says the concept of confidentiality was initiated by maroney's legal team. the doctor in this case has been sentenced to decades behind bars but for a separate case. he will be sentenced in skrn for criminal sexual misconduct charges. new outrage this morning after white house decision on debt forgiveness for students. the education department yesterday announced it will counsel debts for close to 13,000 students who attended schools including heals and wyotech. the debt forgiveness for other students remains in limbo. betsy devos says some loans will be wiped out only partially depending on the current income for former students. that decision will affect 20,000 students whose claims were not decided by the time president trump took office. new this morning the california state computer network appears to be back up

consumer investigator chris chmura is here with the story. >> i have a story that dates back to mother's day. mother's day gift is not one you want to arrive late, imagine several months late. victor bought a flower arrangement from eco flower.com, paid $150 for the a arrangement but it never arrived. he called the company several times, got various explanations such as they were out of materials, back ordered, et cetera. finally victor says he just asked for a refund, but he couldn't get that refund so he reached out to us for help. we contacted eco flower.com and got an immediate response. they refunded victor $150, the company didn't respond to our questions about what happened. reminder, you can dispute charges for undelivered products with your credit card company but you've got to act fast. it will remove the charge while it investigates, but you it typically only have 30 to 60 days to report the problem.

"today in the bay's" vianey is kicking us off, the impact both of these wrecks are having on traffic right now. >> they are starting to have an impact. here is an overall look at the bay area. for the most part we're doing

fairly good until we zoom into the sig alerts. there are two in place, the first is a crash along northbound 101 at embarcadero, they only have one lane opened, you can see how heavy that delay already is. the good news chp is reporting they do expect to open several lanes at least by 5:00 a.m. so we should be seeing that open in quite a short amount of time. we also have this deadly crash and chp reported this crash just before 2:00 a.m. and that sig alert was issued at about 3:09 this morning and it remains a hard closure along southbound 880 at 66 avenue, all lanes remain blocked. your best bet if you have plans to head -- or if this is your morning commute, then make sure to get off of southbound 880 before fruitvale f4ravenue. we are really seeing a heavy delay out of this area and i know we do have crews on the scene. for now i will send things back to you. it's not the only crash that we are following this morning, multiple lanes blocked right now highway 101 in palo alto
