tonight. we are tracking the low temperatures and impact it could have on your drive to work. breaking international news, the new information we're learning about that driver who deliberately crashed into a crowd of holiday shoppers in australia. "today in the bay" continues right now. at 6:00 we begin with those live pictures out of oakland this morning, a really nightmare commute on southbound 880, this is not the story that we are talking about this morning, this looks like that crash in australia. tragically there holiday shoppers were mowed down. want to welcome you to "today in the bay." 6:00 right now. we are covering that accident. there is a couple of them, actually, that vianey has been in for mike today. >> a messy commute this morning. >> we want to talk about that. >> let's get right to it. that sig alert cleared out in palo alto so all is clear in palo alto, but right now you're getting a live look using our sky ranger, we have eyes on that southbound 880 crash at 66th avenue in oakland. it remains a hard closure at this hour which means all lanes
6:01 am
are completely blocked off. look at that backup right now. we are seeing backup all the way past high street, even to fruitvale avenue. now you can see they are diverting the majority of that traffic off on 66, but this is a surface street right before that so you need to just avoid southbound 880 entirely. if your commute is from the east bay don't even bother jumping on, try to take surface if you can all the way to your morning commute. start calling your boss because they had estimated this to reopen at around 7:00 a.m. according to chp but judging by these delays even if they do reopen some of those lanes you can still expect to see some of that backup and traffic delay. i also want to show you right now fairly quickly using our traffic maps because our traffic maps are picking up a lot of that slowing in the east pay right now. you can see the heavy delays. so let's help you get around it. i've got the traffic map right here, you can see all lanes are closed and i want to show you our waze app is picking that up as well. you can see the delays right here. if i get right to it, the great

6:03 am
southbound on 880 from oakland down south, you are going to have to find an alternate route. that means if you are headed to the airport on one -- what is one of the busiest travel days, you need to give yourself extra time to get there because you are going to be stuck in this jam as well. we also have been in contact with fedex because that truck, that overturned, the trailer, the back part that overturned was full of packages and a lot of those ended up on the roadway as well and i've been pressing them for information on what this will mean in terms of delays for package deliveries as well. what we know about this crash at this point is that it seems that a driver in a silver small sedan smashed into the back of that trailer, that fedex truck, causing that back trailer to overturn on to the freeway. the driver of the fedex truck was not injured and is here on the scene and is helping investigators will some questions, asking what they want to know about this situation here. he is assisting with that.
6:04 am
what we know about the driver that was killed is that that car overturned after hitting that fedex truck and he died here on scene. his identity has not been released and the chp officer that we've been working with out here says that it's too early to tell whether speed was a factor, whether drugs or alcohol might have been a factor, but certainly this is going to be very difficult for a lot of people for a long time, at least through the morning commute. in oakland, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> it would be frustrating for drivers but we remember that was a life lost as well. standing coverage of that crash throughout the morning and the impact on that morning commute. you can also check out our realtime traffic maps, they are on our website, nbcbayarea.com or you can always check our mobile app. we are also tracking some bitterly cold temperatures as the morning commute is under way. live look at our cameras this morning on the left at the bay bridge toll plaza and on the right the san mateo bridge this morning. bundle up. >> rewant to bring in

6:07 am
