we a very good friday morning to you. we are under a microclimate weather alert this morning. winter officially here in california. you will feel it as you walk out the door. a live look outside san jose and the bay bridge. no matter where you are today, you are going to need to bundle up. good morning to you. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. i certainly felt how cold it was this morning. >> it's the first full day of winter. yesterday, winter began at 8:28 a.m. it's a full day of winter. it feels like it as you head out the door. you need to dress in layers. we have a freeze warning in effect. the temperatures are continuing to fall. all the areas shaded in purple

are included in the freeze warning and frost advisory for the coastline in san francisco. temperatures there, 40 degrees. look at santa rosa, 29. we'll spend several hours below freezing for the inland areas. we are close in san jose, 35 degrees in oakland and palo alto. what to expect for the day, dress in layers as you head out and cover those sensitive plants if you haven't already. the coldest time is sunrise. a look ahead into the rest of the weekend coming up. as we head to vianey, any issues on the road? >> not yet. we may get a build up for the evening. people head out for christmas day and christmas eve. a live look at the bay area. nothing to report at this hour. good drive times. westbound 80 toward bay bridge, looking at seven minutes. westbound 84 toward dumbarton

bridge, 11 minutes. a live look at the bay bridge camera. maybe not. okay. your bridge drive times looking fairly good. yes, we may see a bit of traffic build up because of the people heading out for the holidays. for now, back to you. >> officially tis the season. thank you very much. breaking news in the east bay, flames erupt inside a home in hayward, sending two people to the hospital. >> anser hassan is live at the scene with what we know so far. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. just spoke to the daughter who lived here. they were woken up to the smell of smoke and flames as she rushed to get her parents out. fire crews are on scene. the fire is completely out. the fire investigator just arrived. it's difficult to see from where we are standing, but the backside of the house is destroyed. video from a short time ago.

the fire broke out after 2:00 a.m. on the backside of the house. the daughter, who didn't want to speak on camera said she doesn't know what may have caused the fire. she doesn't know where the fire started because it was too difficult to see inside. with the cold weather, a lot of people have their furnaces up. fire investigators will look at that as well. it took 17 minutes to put the fire out. as i mentioned, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters say they are thankful this fire didn't spread, especially considering how close these homes are to one another. the daughter who lives here says she and her family are doing well. her parents are still in the hospital. they will stay with relatives through the holiday. live in hayward, anser hassan, "today in the bay." >> so sad it happened during the holidays. >> glad to have family to stay with right now. thank you. new this morning, firefighters in antioch had

their hands full late into the night with five separate fires all within blocks that appear to have been set on purpose. those fires burned in an area around a street. three fires were at homes, one a commercial fire and two included outbuildings. it may be the work of an arsonist. we'll have more in a live report at the top of the hour. a man is charged with sending a bomb to a home in the mail. it was sent to an officer's home in alameda. you may recall the story from earlier reporting. he mailed an explosive package to an east palo alto home. the man who opened the package was hurt. a fingerprint led investigators to him. he was arrested in a dramatic fashion wednesday night at his home in oakland hills. >> jumped down like you see in the movies with guns.

what the hell is going on in my neighborhood. >> he will be in court december 28. san jose police say a 33-year-old responded to an undercover officer posing at a 14-year-old girl online. he sent the officer a sexually explicit image and was arrested in san jose at a location he believed he was going to have a secret rendezvous. police say a man who died at a shooting was attempting to take the security guard's gun when she was shot. it happened after 8:00 p.m. in downtown san jose. the suspect planned to rob the store. the security guard has not been charged in that shooting. an emotional night in san francisco as hundreds gather to

good morning, i'm landon dowdy, live at cnbc world headquarters. wall street looks to end on a high note. the markets closed off the highs of the session after several companies, including nbc universal parent comcast pledged to send tax savings on bonuses for workers. we'll get news on sales and sentiments. the dow rising 55 to 24,782. the nasdaq closing up four to 6965. a shake up in the front office of a major tech giant. eric schmidt is stepping down as the chairman of google's parent company, alphabet. they recruited him to run their young company in 2001. he served until 2011. he's spoke for the company for many years. the clock is ticking. it's christmas eve. you still need to find a gift?

oprah got on it and tweeted a warning for billions of fans. >> it's a fraud, it's a fraud, it's a fraud. don't believe it. don't give up bank accounts or personal information to anybody posing as me or anyone else for that matter. >> the scam, apparently, demanding money for exchange for access to social media accounts. you heard oprah there, it's a fraud, it's a fraud, it's a fraud. >> oprah fashion. we want to check in with kari and talk about what a cold morning it is. >> it is a cold morning. we are checking out the seven day forecast at the bottom of the screen. a live look outside in san francisco. a spare the air alert day. no wood burning. the air quality will be unhealthy in the north bay now that the winds are starting to calm down and the particular matter that rises into the atmosphere gets trapped as high pressure moves in. the east bay, peninsula and south bay, moderate air quality.

it's going to get worse over the weekend. take a look at how cold it is as you step out. it's 26 degrees now in napa and fairfield and livermore is 30 degrees below freezing, also in morgan hill. you have temperatures just above freezing for the inner bay and san francisco at 40 degrees. as we go into this afternoon, the high temperatures back where they were yesterday, reaching the upper 50s, downtown san jose, 59 degrees and for the east bay, 58 degrees and danville. oakland, 55 degrees there. 56 in san mateo, daly city, 57. north bay, 57 degrees. mostly upper 50s around the bay area. as we look outside, getting started this morning, getting dressed, the need for layers. you probably don't have to step outside. it's probably cold in the house if you haven't cranked up the heat. it's a hat day. good need for a scarf and warm coat. later on today, lighter, long

sleeves. you will probably wear it all day long, even a light sweater as the temperatures today, once again reach the upper 50s. we'll watch for another chance of rain by the end of the weekend. mostly cloudy this weekend as the storm system approaches. it's also going to be a little bit of a breeze and looking at light snow moving into the sierra by sunday night, that's christmas eve and light snow flurries. for the most part, we'll have a slight chance of rain. this is a fairly weak storm system and glances by the bay area. a chance of rain in the area, holding hope that santa will bring us more rain. after that, it stays dry. high temperatures, mid-50s. inland areas seeing more of the same with highs near 60 degrees over several days. over to vianey arana now with the early morning drive and people hitting the road to get out of town, too. >> it's fairly light in terms of the traffic flow. however, there is a road hazard on the bay bridge, eastbound 80.

freezing temperatures there. frost on the windshield. the north bay has to watch for the possibility of patchy ice on the roadways with temperatures now at 29 degrees. freeze warning in effect until 7:00 this morning. that may damage your plants and you want to make sure you are taking care of pets as well. we'll talk about how warm it gets and what we are expecting for the weekend is coming up. vianey is tracking the morning drive as people go to work and get out of town. >> it's been a quiet morning. the bay area, you can see a lot of green. not a lot of incidents to report. chp having a quiet morning. the only thing i have been track sg the road hazard, eastbound 80 near treasure island. they have moved that off to the side. you can imagine they are on the bridge, so still blocking one of those lanes. we are not seeing heavy delays out of that area. we are expecting
