30 in the tri-valley. freezing temperatures there. frost on the windshield. the north bay has to watch for the possibility of patchy ice on the roadways with temperatures now at 29 degrees. freeze warning in effect until 7:00 this morning. that may damage your plants and you want to make sure you are taking care of pets as well. we'll talk about how warm it gets and what we are expecting for the weekend is coming up. vianey is tracking the morning drive as people go to work and get out of town. >> it's been a quiet morning. the bay area, you can see a lot of green. not a lot of incidents to report. chp having a quiet morning. the only thing i have been track sg the road hazard, eastbound 80 near treasure island. they have moved that off to the side. you can imagine they are on the bridge, so still blocking one of those lanes. we are not seeing heavy delays out of that area. we are expecting holiday light

traffic. the bridge drive times are light. eight minutes. westbound 84 toward dumbarton, 11 minutes. a live look at the bay bridge camera. you can see it's so beautiful out there. we have a couple cars on the roads. looks like the metering lights are not on. back to you. >> thanks. 5:01. union city police will be on heightened alert. a dangerous and illegal side show is planned. police are taking steps to prevent it from happening. it is planned. they will be monitoring that area and the traffic and close off the access all together after the stores close. the side show is planned at the home depot and food maxx. police issued 100 citations at a side show there last week. the drivers aren't breaking the law by gathering beforehand. if they start a side show, drivers could be cited or

charged with reckless driving. berkeley police hope you might recognize this person. he's wanted in connection to a recent groping incident. police say he grabbed a female jogger on december 10th as she was running near 9th and heinz avenue. police say he was wearing a baseball cap and blue pants. at 5:02, breaking news out of hayward. a destructive fire erupts inside a house, sending two people to the hospital. "today in the bay's", anser hassan is live at the scene with more on what is going on this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. new information. just spoke with the fire cap pain. he says they think the fire started in the kitchen because somebody forgot to turn the stove off. the fire broke out at 2:00 a.m. i spoke with the daughter. she was woken up by fire and flames burning in the back of

the house. she rushed to get her 85-year-old parents out. this is video from a short while ago. firefighters are thankful the fire didn't spread, considering how close the homes are. now, we were told that's about 40% of the house that was burned mostly in the back. the front side has still been saved. the daughter who lives here says her parents were taken to the hospital for smoke inhilation. they are hoping to stay with relatives for the rest of the holidays. anser hassan, "today in the bay." >> glad the daughter was able to learn of the fire and get them out. >> thank you. it is 5:03. in the east bay, a teacher in jail for allegedly raping a student. bail has been set for $2 million. the 55-year-old worked at the loma vista adult center in concord. the victim is an adult student with an intellectual level of a

young teenager. the school district placed gonzalez on leave, pending the investigation. a music conductor is coming under fire. the san francisco symphony is cutting ties with him amid sexual assault allegations. it happened between 1985 and 2010. the boston symphony orchestra and the philharmonic canceled concerts with him. a live look at the u.s. capitol where things today will be, no doubt, more quiet. now that lawmakers passed the stopgap measure to avoid a government shut down for midnight tonight. they agreed to a deal to extend federal funding, but only until january 19th. president trump is expected to sign that measure today. a source tells nbc he may also sign the recently approved tax

them up. >> hello? hello? >> a lot of people are trying to get in that last minute shopping. you have a lot to do. let's get to it. a cold start this morning. it is now 36 degrees in the middle of the screen, looking live at the peninsula at palo alto. 35 on the left side in the south bay. it's 29 degrees now in the north bay. you have to watch out for some of those elevated roads and bridges and overpasses that may freeze during these cold temperatures. it may be slick out there, slow down. the high today in cupertino, 56 degrees. 58 in gilroy. we are going to have upper 50s in walnut creek. 55 in oakland. 56 in san mateo. palo alto, a high of 57 degrees and 55 in the mission district. around the bay area, there's not a huge difference in temperatures. generally, mid to upper 50s. if you are hitting the road, clear across the state, the

light snow showers we had yesterday have since cleared the sierra and we are going to have all dry conditions driving down the central valley and into a few other states across the region. for tomorrow, the temperatures much warmer for southern california in the upper 60s. we'll have upper 50s around here and a few more clouds moving in, in advance of this storm system that will bring in light snow showers in time for christmas eve and early christmas morning. it will be a nice treat if you can make it there. here, only a slight chance of rain. i was so disappointed when i saw the computer model. it shows a little bit of rain coming through and got to the north bay and fizzled out. that's about what we can expect. i'm holding out hope that we will get rain in here, keeping that in the forecast on christmas day. be mindful, the chance is light. we have a dry forecast here and temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

announcing super bowl to the olympics and of course we can't forget major league baseball, tennis, boxing and golf. for 25 years enberg was the lead forecaster at nbc. he will be remembered for two words used at pivotal moments, oh, my. hundreds gathered to remember the late mayor ed lee. >> lee started his work in chinatown as a tenants rights lawyer in the 1970s. for more, he was proof that a chinese-american who grew up in public housing can achieve great success. >> somehow, he taught me maybe some politicians can keep the humility, do justice, show absolute compassion and kindness. a family spokesperson read a statement from lee's daughters who said he would be somewhat embarrassed by the affect.

studio. good morning. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we have been talking about the cold weather. kari hall has tracking it all. old man winter not sparing us this morning. >> no. not even in san jose. with the cold temperatures, it's illegal to burn wood today. it's a spare the air day. air quality will be unhealthy. moderate for the east bay peninsula and the south bay. it may get worse as the weekend goes along with the things we are putting out there and the atmosphere gets trapped in the lower levels. as we go through the next couple hours, still have this freeze warning in effect for the areas shaded in purple and along the immediate coastline, frost advisories in effect. there could be patchy road ice. you have to watch out for that and slow your speed. dress in layers heading out the door, wear a hat. bring those pets inside. i have been watching my tomato plants and hoping they survive.

alto. a couple cars out there. look, just a view. nice holiday light traffic. back to you. >> thank you. the time is 5:32. new this morning, a strain of suspicious fires in the east bay overnight. now, investigators are trying to find out how each started. >> sharon katsuda is live in antioch with what we know so far. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus. the sign in front of the building says the humane society. take a look at what this caused, the fire. you can see the damaged rooftop. you can see the windows boarded up. there were several other fires at buildings in the area. firefighters got the call around 10:00 about structure fires on a street. you can see by the video, the fire caused major damage inside the building on a street. all other structures are moderately to severely damaged. fortunately, firefighters say the commercial buildings and

homes were abandoned at the time of the fire. there were no reported injuries. all the fires appear to have been set. no details on a suspect or suspects. if you have information on these fires, you are asked to call the contra costa fire department. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda. back to you. >> thank you so much for that update there. a man has been arrested and charged with sending a bomb through the mail to a peninsula home. he may be connected to the explosive package sent to an officer's home in alameda. you may recall that story from earlier reporting. ross mailed an explosive package to an east palo alto home. the man who opened it was hurt. a fingerprint led investigators to him. he was arrested in a dramatic fashion at his home in oakland hills. here is one of the neighbors. >> he jumped out like you see in a movie. what is going on in my

neighborhoods? >> he will be back in court december 28. investigators believe this man was meeting an underage girl for sex. 33-year-old jose menez responded to an under cover officer posing at a 13-year-old online. he sent a sexually explicit image to the girl and met where he believed they were having a rendezvous. the man who died during a robbery was trying to take the security guard's gun. the security guard has not been charged in the shooting. 5:34. warriors are hosting the lakers. be careful where you get the

tickets. tuesday night, seven people were turned away because they had fake tickets. 300 fans purchased fake tickets and were not let inside. the best way to make sure the tickets are legit, buy them directly from the team. a sanctuary college protecting undocumented immigrants. this week, the college board approved $600,000 to help undocumented students. that includes caseworkers, counselors and fellowship opportunities. this benefits those who are part of the daca program. more details of how many daca recipients are in school. a study by uc san diego finds of the 800,000 d.r.e.a.m.ers, 25% have a bachelor's degree or higher. 45% are in school and of those, 70% are pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher. by the way, more than 90% of

daca recipients have jobs, many while attending college. some say california's gas tax increase goes too far. apparently, where you live says a lot about how you feel. it's supposed to add $130 billion to roadway projects according to a new uc brk lee poll, 52% of voters support repealing the gas tax. but, in the bay area, 60% prefer keeping the tax. it is 5:36 right now. hitting the skies for the holidays? you are certainly not alone. today is expected to be one of the busiest holiday air travel days. airlines are expected to see 151 million passengers for the holiday season. that's 3.5% increase from last year. if you can switch your flight to sunday or monday, which is expected to be the lightest day

have had recently. we have been talking about how dry it has been this month. in santa rosa, .08 inch. we are missing four inches of rain. that is a lot of water. unfortunately, there's not a lot of rain in the forecast for the next several days. this front for sunday into monday fizzles out before it gets here. it could bring in light snow. that is good news. i'll keep the slight chance of rain in the forecast. hopefully santa will bring us rain. after that, dry weather with highs in the mid-50s for san francisco. inland areas, keep more of the same temperatures, upper 50s to low 60s and cold mornings for several days. vianey, any issues as drivers head out to work? >> no problems yet. we are getting closer to 6:00, so might see a build up in traffic. the map has remained clear. the bridge drive times, westbound 80 toward the bay bridge, nine minutes.

the new year starting january 1st. bart will require people to show proof of payment on trains. you will have to show a paper ticket or prove you scanned your card. it will be a one month grace period where you get warnings instead of citations. they will hire fare observers. a u.s. veteran deported to mexico is back in the u.s. for the first time in 15 years. >> this is after we discovered veterans who had been deported. chavez arrived across the border at san diego yesterday. nobody recognized him until he walked up to the microphone. he says he was so excited to come home, he didn't sleep the night before. >> excited. i was in disbelief. i believe it now.
