"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning to you. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. as we start this friday morning off, extremely cold. kari was telling us about this. we knee it was coming, now we are dealing with it. >> i have been looking at the very fine tuning of the forecast and looking at the microclimates around the bay area. how about this, healdsberg is 29

degrees. 26 in fairfield. hard freezes happening in the north bay and the inland areas. morgan hill, 28 degrees. there may also be patchy road ice, especially in elevations above 1,000 feet. dress in layers and wear a hat. take care of those pets and farm animals. we have 1:20 until we get down to the coldest temperatures. i'll continue to watch that for you. as we head over to vianey, watching the roads and if there's issues this friday morning. not yet. you heard kari, slowing down a bit. in the north bay, patchy ice because there's not many cars on the road doesn't mean you should pick up your speed. overall, looking good. let's get to drive times for the south bay. 19 minutes northbound 280 from 101 to highway 85, 17 minutes. 85 showing nice, clear conditions.

we haven't seen major delays at this hour. the east bay drive times, which typically build at the 6:00 hour, northbound 880 to marina boulevard eight minutes. let's look at the bay bridge. 6:00 a.m. and no metering lights. i bet they are loving this holiday light traffic. back to you. >> thanks so much. new this morning, a destructive fire breaks out inside a home in the east bay sending two people to the hospital. anser hassan is live at the scene to explain what may have caused the fire. tragic during the holiday. all yearlong, but especially now. >> reporter: that's right, laura, especially during the holidays. we have new information about the fire. we spoke to the captain a while ago. they think the fire started in the kitchen because someone forgot to turn the stove off. they wrapped up their work

already. there's a repair crew here to board up the house. we were told the fire started around 2:00 a.m. the back of the home was damaged. i spoke to the daughter who lived here. she says they were asleep when they were woken up by the smell of fire and flames burning the backside of the house. she rushed to get her parents out. 40% of the house was destroyed. they are thankful the fire didn't spread, considering how close the homes are. the daughter says her parents were taken to the hospital with smoke inhilation. they are expected to be okay. they will stay with relatives for the holidays or the rest of the year. anser hassan, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much for that story. union city police will be on heightened alert. a dangerous and illegal side show is planned. police say the plan is to

monitor traffic and then close off access, all together, after stores close. the side show is planned at the home depot and food maxx parking lot on industrial parkway. police issued 100 citations at a side show there last week. the drivers and fans aren't breaking the law by gathering beforehand. if they start a side show, drivers could be cited and charges for reckless driving and have their cars impounded. new this morning, berkeley police hope you might recognize this person. take a look here. he is wanted in connection to a recent groping incident. he grabbed a female jogger near 9th street and heinz avenue. surveillance caught this shortly after the incident. he was wearing a baseball cap and blue pants.

coverage california extended a deadline to accommodate a rush of people signing up. today is the deadline if you need coverage january 1st. the final day is the last day of january. a live look at the u.s. capital where things, today, will no doubt be more quiet. now that lawmakers passed a stopgap measure to avoid a government shutdown. they agreed to deal with, sorry, agreed to a deal yesterday to extend federal funding, but only until january 19th. president trump is expected to sign the spending measure today a source telling nbc he may sign the tax bill today. the short term funding will set up more issues for congress when lawmakers return next year. among the items on the table, $81 billion now, this runs out

in march. outgoing arizona senator, jeff flake, believes an agreement on daca is still within reach. >> negotiations are going well. we are working through it. >> without a deal, some programs would be in limbo, including one providing health insurance for 9 million low income children. happening today, senate majority leader, mitch mcconnell will hold a news conference in d.c. he's speaking out on the tax reform bill passed in the house and senate. switching gears, thousands of people across the bay area will bundle up and check out the holiday lights this weekend. one south bay neighborhood is set to go to get into the holiday spirit. bob redell is live in glen area this morning, in willow glen with a look at the lights for the community to see. a beautiful sight there.

ozone emissions as well because it's going to be moderate as far as the air quality today and no wood burning. as we start out, it's really easy not to spend a lot of time outside because it is so cold. you want to make sure as you wait for the train or bus you are wearing extra layers. down to 26 degrees in fairfield. it is cold at 24 degrees in some of the north bay valleys. now, we are going to see our high temperatures today back up to where we were yesterday in the upper 50s, 55 in oakland today and 57 in daly city and palo alto. 57 in the marina district and santa rosa, 57 degrees after a cold start. if you are going to be traveling today across the state, all dry. it warms up for southern california into the mid to upper 60s today. going into the next several days, looking forward to some rain. there will be a slight chance between christmas eve and also christmas morning.

christmas, i love a colder christmas. >> welcome to california. >> it's what we are used to around here. it has gotten really cold. i have been checking out the spots where the coldest temperatures are, walnut creek, 26 degrees. 26 in fairfield and 32 in palo alto. freezing temperatures around the bay area. the freeze warning continues for 30 minutes. i think it will stay below freezing, well beyond that, until 9:00 for some areas. it's also a spare the air alert day. as we take a live look outside in san francisco, it's going to be unhealthy as far as our air quality today. no wood burning. if you can, catch public transportation this morning. i'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend in a few minutes. vianey is tracking a light commute on this friday. >> very light, very nice. no complaints. a lot of people are up and ready head to work. overall, we had a minor road

hazard in the south bay. really not an issue. right now, chp is reporting a crash eastbound 80. a lane is blocked. you can see a back up here. there's also another accident up ahead off to the right hand shoulder. the one here, the shoulder is blocked and causing speed sensors to see slowing. it should be no issue there. drive times 880 marina to broadway, nine minutes typically at this hour. 15-20 minutes, not bad. 580 to grand avenue, eight minutes. we are off to a great start. back to you. >> thank you. fire investigators looking into a string of suspicious fires in the east bay overnight. >> the fires started late last night in antioch, mainly along a street. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live outside one of the fire scenes. this really is showing us some

of that damage left behind. >> reporter: that's right. a lot of damage just at this one building we are seeing behind us. take a look. you can see the damage on the rooftop there. the charred siding. one of the neighbors tells us these windows have been boarded up. she's concerned there was a fight here last october at the same building. this neighbor gave us this video from last night's fire. you can see the flames shooting high up from the building. this fire on a street happened at about 11:30 last night. she says another fire broke out at the same location and she says you can see the video here, we have a call into the contra costa county fire and the cause of that fire from last october. meantime, investigators are looking into last night's fire at several locations. firefighters got the call around 10:00 last night about structure fires on madil street and a street. the fire caused major damage

inside this building on a street. all other structures are moderately to severely damaged. fortunately, the buildings and homes were abandoned at the time of the fire. no reported injuries. all the fires appear to have been set. no details, yet, on a suspect or suspects. if you have any information, you are asked to call the contra costa fire department. apparently, there was another fire at a florist shop down the street. this neighbor is concerned and hopes the firefighters catch the suspect or suspects. live in antioch, sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> good thing no one was hurt in that. 6:33 right now. a man has been arrested and charged with sending a bomb through the mail to a peninsula home. police believe he may be connected to the explosive package sent to an officer's home in alameda. several investigators say ross mailed an explosive package to

an east palo alto home. the man opened the package there and he was hurt. sources say a fingerprint led investigators to him. he was arrested wednesday night in oakland hills. here is a neighbor. >> they jumped out like you see in a movie. >> he will be back in court december 28th. police sting helped nab a san jose man who investigators say believed he was meeting an underage girl for sex. san jose police say the 33-year-old responded to an under cover officer posing as a girl, just 14 years old online. police say he sent the officer a sexually explicit image and was later arrested in san jose at a location he believes he was having a secret rendezvous. the sports world is mourning the loss of a legendary

broadcaster. enberg died at his home. he retired last year after a six decade career announcing super bowl, olympics, tennis and golf. he was the lead sports caster at nbc. he will no doubt be remembered for two words he often used at pivotal moments, oh, my. the image of a man plowing his car into a crowd in australia. footage shows the car pulling off into traffic and accelerating toward a crowd of people filled with shoppers. we have frozen the video before impact, right there. police say it was not a terror attack. 19 people were injured. the suspect has a history of mental illness. another emotional night in san francisco as hundreds gather to honor the late mayor ed lee. >> candles lit up chinatown last

night. lee, who died suddenly from a heart attack started his work in chinatown as a tenants rights lawyer in the 1970s. for many, he was proof a chinese-american who grew up in public housing can achieve great success. >> he taught me maybe some politicians can keep the humility, do justice, show compassion and kindness. a family spokesperson read a statement saying he would be somewhat embarrassed by the outpouring of efection. lee's ashes will be buried at cypress lawn memorial park. at 6:36 this morning. today is expected to be one of the busiest holiday travel days of the year. airlines expecting to see 51 million passengers for the holiday season. that is a 3.5% increase from last year. if you can, kind of late to do it, but switch your flight to sunday or monday. it's expected to be the lightest

this, but i'm getting good news in terms of traffic this morning. that's rare. look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we've gone all morning without metering lights. >> a lot of people already traveled. a lot of kids out of school. >> or this may be the last day, so it's going to be a cold start this morning. tomorrow morning, still cool, but not cold. we warm up to the mid-50s for the coast. upper 50s for the bay, inland. up to 60 degrees. a mix of sun and clouds throughout the weekend whether you will be shopping, running around, getting the house ready. it is going to be a busy one. hopefully you can take time-out and enjoy. maybe you will ice skate while shopping around union square. mid-50s throughout the day tomorrow and clouds starting to roll in. that helps it cool off a bit more slowly. it will be a mild night. if you are going down to l.a. to see family, it is up to 64 degrees today.

now. be careful where you buy the tickets. tuesday night, seven people were turned away. they had fake tickets. since the season started, 300 fans purchased fake tickets and were not let in. the best way to make sure they are legit, buy them from the team. >> san francisco is a sanctuary college protecting undocumented immigrants. they are backing that blenpledg with a lot of money. $600,000 to help the undocumented students. that includes caseworkers, fellowship opportunities. it is part of the daca program president trump is ending unless congress takes action. more details on how many daca recipients are in school. a study from uc san francisco finds of the 800,000 d.r.e.a.m.ers in the country, 27% have a bachelor's degree or higher, 45% in school and of those, 70% are pursuing a

while we are seeing below freezing temperatures in the tri-valley. check out the forecast at the bottom of the screen. we are talking about the possibility of patchy road ice. in the past hour or so, elevations above 1,000 feet. dress in layers, wear a hat. keep the pets inside. take them out for a quick walk and protect yourself. we will have the coldest time coming up in 30-40 minutes. as we look at the high temperatures, mid to upper 50s. nice recovery after such a cold start. we talk about having to try to match up gloves. you are doing that this morning and a hat and scarf, a good choice to make sure you have all those layers. you will need to shed them as the day goes along. long sleeves. a good day for the ugly christmas sweater. wear that into work. that will help keep you warm, too. we are going to talk about our dry december and what's ahead over the next couple days. i want to show you the numb

biers and what we have measured so far. santa rosa, this is pitiful for december, .08 inch. we are missing four inches of rain. that is a lot of rain to catch up on. san francisco, only measuring .10 inch. san jose, .07 inch. most of the rainfall totals, 1-5% of normal. as we look ahead, it only shows very slight rain chances in the forecast for christmas. these weather systems roll closer. just kind of dry out before they get here. that's what we are expecting on christmas. i'm going to keep this chance of rain in the forecast. it doesn't look good for us. san francisco, mid-50s for a few days. cool mornings inland. a mix of sun and clouds as we go through next week as well. vianey is tracking the morning commute. it looks good so far. >> nice and light. if you hit the snooze button, you will be okay in terms of traffic. look at the bay area. it's all fairly green.
